Horrendous southpaw and a guy that can't hit them. While we gave up a bag of baseballs, I don't see how those two are helping in any damn way...

Naquin is the very definition of league average.

I soooooo hope the Mets will square off against the Yankees in another Subway Series...and destroy them

Making the playoffs for the first time since the President Hoover administration would be a nice start.

(isn't easily excitable)

Hoover, Hoover ... yes, he was the president in 2015.

You know, I thought about using that year in my riposte but I figured as follows:

The Mets lost the 2016 NL Wild Card Game, 3-0 (Bumgarner bested and outlasted Syndergaard; Familia blew up in the 9th).

Do you consider the Wild Card Game to be part of the playoffs, or a gateway to the playoffs which the Mets failed to enter?

Westheim 07-30-2022 11:22 AM

Do I approve of the wild card inflation? - No.

Is it a playoff appearance when everybody calls it that (including, y'know, the league), even though I stomp my feet and hold my breath, blind with rage? - Yes.

Here is the Mets lineup from that game. Two things strike me about it:

1) How did the Mets even make it to the NLWC with these guys?

2) Compare this to today's Mets and realize that, despite all of your fur bristling, they really have dramatically improved.

Westheim 07-30-2022 01:02 PM

It was the era of the five aces. Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, Matzie, Wheeler. Yes, they went all in order exactly once, ever, not just in '16, *EVER*, but the pitching was usually not the question mark for those Mets. Even the back end was formidable.

But the absolute direness of the Mets lineups of 2015-16, even when they were WINNING, is something that still boggles even Mets fans' minds. This was the unofficial low point. And yes, kids, that team went on to win the damn penannt three months later.

Well, it took the first of 16 trades for Kelly Johnson (and Juan Uribe), and especially the trade for a certain Yoenis C. from Detroit, and the Rally Parakeet! But they pulled it off. Somehow.

Westheim 07-31-2022 02:18 PM

Mets today had a lineup with eight .720+ OPS batters, all except Mazeika (I wish we could have our DH bat for the catcher rather than the pitcher for sure...)

Has that been seen on any team, recently?

Westheim 07-31-2022 02:25 PM

Unrelated, if Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez actually came to Regensburg for the WBC qualifiers, I'd rob there on my ******* knees to say hi.

A hundred miles or so is pretty far to rob on your knees! That's how much I love those guys!

The closest link that I could find for "rob on your knees" is Rob Chiriqui's "On Your Knees," the flip side (do they still have those?) to his "One Man Army."

Play it. It's rather hypnotically repetitive. I am thinking of using it for sleep time white noise.

Now please explain your fascination for Darling and Hernandez. Nostalgia? I find Hernandez to be pompous.

Westheim 07-31-2022 04:17 PM

I'll look at that later after the Mets game.

IF I can find time, because I also have to schedule a good old cry for after the game. That brief clip of Jose Fernandez (today would have been his 30th birthday, they said) just hit me right in the feels. :crying:

Well, sweeping the worst team in the division is the way to win a title.

Not a fan of Vogelbach and Naquin yet, if Naquin can't catch either they should stitch "Broxton Jr." on the back of his uni.

OTOH, I'm loving having an actual junk-time bullpen guy in Hunter, and a manager that knows what to do with him (pitch him in lopsided games).

BBGiovanni 08-02-2022 12:57 AM

It's Jake Eve for the first time in 300+ days! THIS IS NOT A DRILL REMAIN CALM*

*he keeps saying he "felt good" through the whole process, didn't he go from elbow injury to shoulder injury? All digits crossed multiple times for the next few hours :crying:

Magus978 08-02-2022 02:04 PM

Does not look like the Mets will get anything done today. Heard nothing new on the Contreras/Robertson front. Doesn't seem like they're in on anyone else at the moment.

Prospect-clutching could come back and bite this team in October.

BBGiovanni 08-02-2022 05:49 PM

Haha, Ruf ahoy! Nice guy, slightly less immobile than Vogelbach. I'm not seeing a world series from those guys and Naquin and what they already had but we'll see I guess.

I hope they're still fishing for a catcher, the Giants peddled Casali to Seattle in the meantime.

Westheim 08-03-2022 01:55 AM

I would make a snarky comment like "that Darin Rough trade is ruf", but it's actually too stupid a trade to make jokes about.

No, I wasn't a J.D. Davis fanboy. Wildly not. But three young pitchers on top of that??

Terrible trade. So that's how we're fumbling away the division. Neat.

Déjà Bru 08-03-2022 11:26 AM

CBS Sports sort of agreed with you guys:
Quote:

[Trade] Loser: Mets

By no means was it a bad trade deadline for the Mets. They made several sensible additions (Darin Ruf, Mychal Givens, Tyler Naquin, Daniel Vogelbach), but they're also on pace for the second-best regular season in franchise history, and the owner has the deepest pockets in the sport. It felt like the Mets were poised to do something more impactful (Willson Contreras?) and instead they just tinkered with the margins of the roster. Again, not a bad deadline for the Mets. Just not as good as it could have been.

It's weird for both sides... I think the Giants must expect JD to play 3B some, or 1B until Belt comes back. Or maybe just DH all the time, who knows. It makes some sense for them to bet on him being able to hit better than he has, but man will he give all that back and more in the field. And the Gs have looked Phillie-tacular on D this year. They should have sold Rodon and everybody IMO.

In other news, Syndergaard's back in the Tri-State! In the same rotation with Wheeler
