Nuka News Update

All the news you need about Bradberton and Nuka World

by Evan Guy

22 May 2299 - Week in Review

Here are the stories you missed in the Nuka World League

17 May 2299 - Season Ends for Brown: The season will end prematurely for Smelly Bobby Brown, the Dark first baseman. He suffered shoulder inflammation on 05/13/2299, an injury that is serious enough to knock him out of action for the rest of the year. Brown was not available for comment.

Brown has collected 3 hits for the Bloodworms this year, 0 of them home runs. He has also netted 1 RBIs and scored 1 run while batting .150.

22 May 2299 - Eric Streetwalker Captures NWL Award

21-year-old Eric Streetwalker made a few Quantum headlines during this past week as the rookie right fielder proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and Nuka World League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 8 hits in 23 at-bats to put up a .348 average. Streetwalker collected 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and scored 2 runs.

So far this season Streetwalker has put up a .274 batting average with 20 hits, 4 home runs and 10 RBIs.

Analysis

The Diamond City Swatters are back in sole possession of the #1 spot, while the Silver Shroud shrink down to #3. Goodneighbor is back to the #2 spot, while Nordhagen Beach jostles in for #4 and their league mates, The Slog finishes the Top 5. Atom is again at the bottom, with strange company in Easy Town dropping to #23.

It seems like a week ago since we last looked at these teams, so a quick assessment of standings and statistics show that there are a few facts to ponder. For one, is University Point going to be there in the end? For the second-straight week, the Deathclaws have climbed the Power Rankings (now up to #9) after earlier having taken a huge tumble from #7 two weeks ago. While they are still on the outside looking in for the Minutemen League wildcard spot at three games back of Quincy, the Claws could be a team on the move.

At this point of the season, most of the dividing lines look to be set, especially the Brotherhood League with the Party Boys and Ghouls looking to be the definitive playoff teams. Unless the stimpack shortage really comes to bite them, those two teams are likely to ride out the season as #1 and #2.

The Institute League could be interesting, though the Silver Shroud look to have control. If they continue to go 3-2 on average, no other team in the IL will catch them. Abernathy is probably going to return to the playoffs, but Starlight seems to be a few moves away from making a strong run for the wildcard spot.

The Railroad League may look like the current wildcard team, the Oberland T-51s are in danger, but expect the league title to come out to a late-season battle between the T-51s and Swatters. Realistically, that league is decided for who will be in the playoffs.

Weekly Team Power Rankings

Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Diamond City Swatters (145.9, o)
2) Goodneighbor Hancocks (136.6, +2)
3) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (133.6, -2)
4) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (126.4, +2)
5) The Slog Ghouls (121.3, -2)
6) Quincy Gunners (114.1, -1)
7) Abernathy Adamantium (107.9, +2)
8) Oberland T-51s (102.7, -1)
9) University Point Deathclaws (100.7, +2)
10) Starlight Lady Killers (87.6, -2)
11) Finch Farm Four Leafs (83.3, +3)
12) Roxbury Knuckle Punchers (83.3, -1)
13) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (79.3, +6)
14) Vault 81 Dwellers (78.1, +1)
15) Lexington Synths (77.1, +8)
16) County Crossing Bloodbugs (73.0, o)
17) Egret Ninjas (71.1, -5)
18) Concord Radstags (71.0, -5)
19) Salem Witch Hats (71.0, +1)
20) Warwick Mirelurks (69.0, -3)
21) FHE Yao Guai (67.0, +1)
22) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (64.0, -4)
23) Easy Town Assaultrons (63.9, -2)
24) Atom Cats (32.1, o)

Team Focus

Let us take a look at two teams that have been quietly good (as in consistent) all season, so they have not really been featured a lot, like last week's "Playoffs Stratements" section indicated.

Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (24-11, -- GB, BL)

The Party Boys have been relying more on their pitching, currently second in the North Charles Association in runs allowed (128) and Starters ERA (3.59) and fourth in Bullpen ERA (2.90), than their offense. Fourth starter Derek Gist (6-0, 4.33) is one to thank when Nordhagen Beach faces off against other fourth starters. Chet Arthur (4-1, 2.55) is the true team leader, though Tommy Beach (4-4, 3.28) is not getting as much luck against other staff aces. Closer Nigh Demon Archaki (2-1, 0.56, 14 SV) has finally emerged as a star player.

On offense, the Boys are fourth in runs scored (178), second in batting average (.293), and first in OBP (.359). They are low in power at T-9th (32 HR), so they need to find the long ball more to score more runs. RF Jonathan Angelou (.355/5/17) has emerged, leading to rumors that injured star Tomas Jones may be on the way out. The only really negative bat in the lineup is SS Taboo Richardson (.135/4/16) who either hits the ball over the fence or not at all. His 15 total hits (4 singles, 7 doubles, and 4 HR) is among the worst in the CBO for everyday starters.

Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (25-10, -- GB, IL)

The Shroud have been the best in the NCA in overall production. Like Nordhagen Beach, Fort Hagen is doing better in pitching than hitting, though both are good. The Shroud are the best in runs allowed (118) and Starters ERA (3.06) while just 8th in Bullpen ERA (3.83). All four starters--Mike Cartrette (6-1, 1.64), Brent Hooker (5-2, 3.35), Derek Green (4-1, 3.99), and Matt Hope (5-1, 3.38)--are pitching well each game. Closer Curtis Thriceshot (2-1, 1.00, 8 SV) is leading the endgame.

On offense, the Fort is 3rd in runs (179), 1st in batting average (.296), and 2nd in OBP (.350). They are a bit better in homers, currently tied for 3rd (37). LF Andrew Nuka (.321/11/29) has been an extreme trade benefit from the Quincy Gunners, while 1B Jim Tiller (.320/7/17), RF David Driftwood (.285/6/24), and 3B Micah Morals (.270/6/21) are smacking in homers and runs. Catchers Paul Grog (.208/0/6--currently injured) and rookie Seemore Mares (.120/0/2) have been a detriment, leading to some questioning why Bixton Moore (.429/1/5) does not get more playing time, especially when Moore has a reputation for better defense despite not being considered a great bat.

Controversial opinion, but I think this Dynasty won't be complete until the Swatters win it all at least once, and they're not even my favorite team.

So I can end the dynasty if they win it this season? :tt2:

I hope all teams get to taste victory before this dynasty is over. That may also mean that I am doing this for a while. I am nearing a year of running the Fallout dynasty and I'm only in Season 4.

I do find myself slowed down recently by the weekly features due to my own time constraints. I may need to skip them here and there to keep the days flowing, especially like the last couple of weeks where I have been swamped with work. It will only get worse in August when predicted "normality" returns.

In the real world, I did get both my first Pfizer vaccine, which I also hope keeps me immune from radchicken pox. I am happy that I had a chance earlier in the process than most.

The Nuka Tour

Your introduction to Nuka-World and Bradberton

by Evan Guy

22 May 2299 - Part 1: Dry Rock Gulch

This story is lifted straight from a terminal. You can find it on the intranet at https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Dry_Rock_Gulch

2058-2077: Nuka-World Sequel, A Westworld

Dry Rock Gulch was the first Nuka-World park expansion, launched in 2058. Inspired by John-Caleb Bradberton's own love of the Old West when he was child, the park was designed to emulate the feeling of the American Frontier, working on the popular image of the West as an untamed frontier, full of helpful people. The park was also constructed in part as a celebration of Nuka-Cola Wild, Nuka-Cola's own root-beer variant.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1614368806

2077-2288: The Great War and Beyond

When the Great War struck, most visitors died where they were; the radiation cooked them performing their last acts, and the concussive force of the blasts toppled the rollercoaster. For over two hundred years, it remained almost untouched by time. However, with the raiders' successful seizure of the trader settlement of Nuka-Town USA, a surviving group of traders fled into this park. With the raiders hot on their tail, they unknowingly barricaded themselves within the bloodworm nest within Mad Mulligan's Mine, and quickly succumbed to the bloodworms. Since then, the gulch has become a breeding ground of bloodworms, with the local authorities deeming it to be an infestation of deadly worms.

Nate Howard helped put an end to the bloodworm breeding grounds, though, with only a few surviving bloodworms now keep in captivity and on display at the Safari Adventure Park.

2288-2299: I Want to Be a Cowperson, Baby

Dry Rock Gulch has five featured sections: Main Street, based on main streets in old Western towns, it was the place of Doc Phosphate's Saloon, general store, and dentist; Dry Rock Gulch Theater, where buckaroos and mommas too can watch a Wild West performance; Mad Mulligan's Minecart Coaster, the "rootinest, tootinest" roller coaster this side of the Sierra Nevada; Doc Phosphate's Saloon; where pops can wet their whistles; and the Ol' Sugartop drop ride, the tallest oil derrick with a killer drop you will ever see.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1614368806

Dry Rock Gulch also features one of Nuka-World's favorite interactive "quests, "High Noon at the Gulch." After speaking to either robot Sheriff Hawk or Sheriff Eagle, they will instruct the tourist to talk to three other robots in order to earn a combination to access the key.

The Giddyup Kid will ask the toruist to track down his missing Giddyup Buttercups. A Giddyup Buttercup toy can be found directly to the east, shoved in a trash bin at the refreshment stand. Dropping it into the circle will earn the player character a code piece.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1614368815

One-Eyed Ike challenges the tourist to a duel and gives them a Western revolver for the purpose. Once he says "Draw!" one must shoot him before he shoots them. If successful, another code piece is awarded and some toy ammo for the Western revolver.

Doc Phosphate will request that the Sole Survivor deliver drinks to three patrons. Take the drinks and place them on the tables next to each patron. Talking again to Doc Phosphate will give the player character the third code piece and some Nuka-Cola Wild.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1614368815

The safe with the key is located inside the outdoor theater in the middle barn. Speaking to either sheriff will yield a reward of 200 Nukatickets to be used in various gift shops around Dry Rock Gulch.

22 May 2299 - Part 2: Dry Rock Gulch

Team name: Dark Bloodworms

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1614370153

Stadium: Ol' Sugartop Ballpark at Dry Rock Gulch

Team President: Peter Park

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1614370109

Peter loves the money. He spends a lot of time with his wife Chelsea and sister-in-law Cora. Peter came to love baseball thanks to watching games from traveling caravan groups. He may not know a lot about the game just yet, but he is an enthusiast when it comes to baseball and loves to run a business. Nate Howard recommended him to John-Caleb Bradberton as a good fit as a Team President to go along with running the Dry Rock Gulch park.

Team Nickname: Bloodworms

From: https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Bloodworm

Originally an aquatic species, these bloodworms (order Glycera) steadily migrated from the coastal waters of the Atlantic coast after mutating, and have made their homes in the dry and dusty wasteland. Despite a total change in habitat, bloodworms have retained two of their original traits. The first of these is their burrowing ability; instead of burrowing into wet sand and silt, their four hollow jaws have become adept at plowing through the tough and dried soil. They use this ability quite a bit, ambushing prey from beneath the surface, and then returning underground to catch their prey unaware again. They hunt prey, are roughly four to five feet (120 to 150 centimeters) long, and can attack creatures equal to or larger than themselves.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1614370109

Bloodworms that have mutated since the Great War, they are now approximately the size of an adult human being and have spines on the outside of their body in addition to their four-pronged maw. These worms react to the presence of intruders in their territory and will charge the intruders by burrowing through the dirt at high speeds. Upon reaching their prey, they will lunge forth from the ground and attempt to bite their target.

Bloodworm larvae will also inhabit the corpses of large prey, such as brahmin, and come out of the corpse to attack any new prey that wanders by. These brahmin can be spotted from a distance if watched, as they will twitch and bulge slowly.

Players to Watch

SP Tim LeBlanc (4-0, 0,26)

Drafted in the 5th round of the 2299 Inaugural Draft, LeBlanc has been dominant from the start. In 10 starts, he has yet to lose, and has allowed only two earned runs in 68.1 innings pitched. While the NWL is struggling to hit the ball, LeBlanc is going even beyond other pitchers in stopping opponents dead. In fact, the only reason his record is not better is because Dark cannot score runs when he is on the mound.

2B Roger Darn (.241/1/4)

One of only two Bloodworms hitting over .200, Darn was taken in the 26th round of the Inaugural Draft. A rangy second baseman, Darn has used his above average speed to help him leg out a few infield singles and take an extra base on balls slightly in the gap.

23 May 2299 - T-51s Blank Mirelurks, Kawolski Wins

Sheng Kawolski of the Oberland T-51s was on top of his game today.

The 26-year-old tantalized the Warwick Mirelurks with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 7-0 shutout.

"He had the changeup working," Warwick manager Old Man Langford said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Oberland hurler had 4 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Kawolski told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Thus far this season, Kawolski has worked 61.1 innings with 69 strikeouts en route to a 5-2 record and a 3.96 ERA.

23 May 2299 - Sphinx Throws 6-Hitter En Route to 5-1 Lady Killers Win

The home crowd had a good time watching the Easy Town Assaultrons and Starlight Lady Killers get after it.

The Starlight Lady Killers defeated the Easy Town Assaultrons, 5-1, in North Charles Association action at Valentine Detective Agency Field. Starlight pitcher Justin Sphinx had a standout performance. The win gives Starlight a season record of 19-17.

Sphinx pitched a complete game for Starlight. The 29-year-old right-hander was charged with 1 run on 6 hits. He struck out 6 during his 118-pitch performance.

"Nice to tuck this win away," said Sphinx.

23 May 2299 - Hope Lifts Silver Shroud to Win

The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud picked up a win at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium, knocking off the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, 7-2. Starting pitcher Matt Hope (6-1) played a key role in the triumph. The Silver Shroud improved to a lofty 26-10.

In his 125-pitch effort, Hope allowed 2 runs on 5 hits over 9 innings. He walked 1 and struck out 7. He also hit his second career home run off Party Boys starter Derek Gist (6-1).

"I tried to mix it up, keep them off balance," said Hope.

CF Ben Pawlak was the hottest hitter in the game, going 3 for 4 with three doubles to tie a Fort Hagen team record and two runs scored.

23 May 2299 - Swatters Sneak By Deathclaws, 4-3, with Big 8th

The Swatters grabbed a win, 4-3, at The Great Green Jewel, overcoming a fine effort from University Point pitcher Adam Froggatt. Froggatt went 8 innings and allowed 4 runs. Uncle Abe Feddersen (1-1) picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-1. Diamond City has now won 4 games in a row.

Diamond City took a 4-3 lead on Wayne Lacy's 13th home run of the season. The 3-run home run came off University Point pitcher Adam Froggatt (2-3) in the bottom of the eighth.

Lacy called the win "a lesson in teamwork."

Diamond City closer Josh Samm picked up his 19th save on the season.

24 May 2299 - Eastlake's Oldtimer Demands Trade, Gets Released

FHE Yao Guai minor league third baseman Mike Oldtimer returned from his personal leave with a demand to the franchise: trade me. Instead, General Manager Travis Lawver informed Eastlake Aquaboys manager Steve Feinman that Oldtimer had been released.

Oldtime first joined the Yao Guai as an undrafted free agent following the 2296 Inaugural Draft. He never played a game for them that season before being traded to the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers along with two other players for the rights to 3B Jon Hitman, now of the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys.

Oldtimer played with the Knuckle Punchers' BMU team, the Forest Grove Mole Rats, in 2997 before being traded to Goodneighbor in the 2997 offseason. Midway through the 2298 season, he was traded back to FHE in a six-player trade.

In his minor league career with three different teams, Oldtimer is a .299/.329/.410 hitter with seven career home runs and 49 RBI.

24 May 2299 - Chemists Bonk Four Leafs, 15-1

Chemists first baseman Jalen Wharton put his stamp on his team's 15-1 win over the Finch Farm Four Leafs. Wharton was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and 2 walks. He scored 4 runs and drove in 2 for Sunshine Tidings in the contest. The Chemists recorded 18 hits in the game with six players getting at least two hits.

Picking up the win was Danny Beerholder. He went 9 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits. The right-hander struck out 4 and walked 4. He also added two singles, a run, and an RBI. The 5th-place Chemists sport a record of 16-21.

It could have been a different outcome for Sunshine Tidings, had it not been for Dave Charred, the 31-year old left fielder. Charred contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning to put Sunshine Tidings up, 1-0.

"We believe in ourselves and we're willing to work hard. It's a good combination," Charred told the Sunshine Tidings Citizen.

24 May 2299 - 5-Hit Blitz by Adams

It was a good day for the Gunners at The Stone House as they clipped the FHE Yao Guai, 10-4. It was tremendous day for Robbie Adams, who was on a hitting barrage at the plate, finishing 5-for-5.

"I don't know what to call that," the Quincy shortstop told reporters after his big performance. "I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' I just try to keep it simple. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then I hit it. Today I picked up the spin pretty well."

Robbie Adams hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI double in the 8th.

This year Adams is hitting .277 with 4 home runs and 26 RBIs in 37 games played. He also boasts an OBP of .345 with 13 walks and 20 runs scored.

The Yao Guai fell to the Gunners today, even as 25-year-old center fielder Noah Arch upped his consecutive-game hitting streak to 20 games. Arch finished with 2 hits in 4 at-bats, but could not stop the Yao Guai from dropping the 10-4 decision.

"Yeah, I kept my streak going, but it would have been better to come away with a win," said Arch.

Arch flied out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, and hit an RBI triple in the 7th. Looking at his season stats, Arch has compiled a .387 batting average and a .409 on-base percentage, while hitting 5 home runs and driving in 30 runs.

24 May 2299 - Beach Beats Cartrette in Pitcher's Duel

Nordhagen Beach rode a good effort from starter Tommy Beach to beat the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. The final score was 2-1. Night Demon Archacki recorded his 15th save for Nordhagen Beach. Nordhagen Beach has an impressive 25-12 record as the teams split the battle for the best of the North Charles Association.

Nordhagen Beach took a 2-1 lead on Brian Masterson's 6th double of the season. The run-scoring double, which Masterson hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Fort Hagen pitcher Mike Cartrette visibly frustrated.

"It was a tough night at the plate," said Fort Hagen manager Mark Andersen.

Mike Cartrette (6-2) suffered the loss, allowing just two earned runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 7.1 innings.

24 May 2299 - Deathclaws Drop Swatters, 7-4

University Point and Diamond City duked it out and the Deathclaws came out victorious.

Jason Harris impressed in the 7-4 University Point win over Diamond City. Harris went 2-4 with 2 doubles. He scored 2 times and drove in 5. The winner was Quentin Malone, who threw 125 pitches over 8.2 innings. The right-hander was charged with 4 runs on 6 hits. The save was credited to Marc Pondsip, his 8th.

Harris had a key at-bat for University Point early in the game. With runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit a 2-run double. It was his 11th double of the season and gave University Point an early 2-0 lead.

"It feels good to get this one," Harris told the University Point Daily News.

The win elevated the Deathclaws to 20-17.

26 May 2299 - Atom-Lexington Trade: Sinn for Pembroke

Newspapers in Atom and Lexington reported that the Cats have reached a deal sending 21-year-old minor league 2B Aaron Sinn and a 2nd round draft pick to the Synths for 24-year-old RHP Pete Pembroke, 21-year-old minor league RF Rocket Pollack, 22-year-old minor league RHP Kyle Schenk and 18-year-old minor league RHP Evan Before.

Checking out his stats for the year, Pembroke has racked up 5 wins and 2 losses in 10 starts, 2.09 ERA and struck out 42 batters in 73.1 innings.

26 May 2299 - Hit Parade: Erb Pops 5 Hits

Today at Valentine Detective Agency Field, the Concord Radstags fell to the Starlight Lady Killers despite a splendid performance by left fielder Dan Erb.

Erb had an exceptional day at the plate, tagging Lady Killers pitching for 5 base hits, but it was not enough for Concord to come away with the win. Starlight whipped Concord by a score of 10-4.

Dan Erb hit a solo-shot off Chris Schneier in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 5th, singled in the 8th and singled in the 9th.

Thus far in 2299 Erb is hitting .344 with 8 home runs, 21 RBIs, 35 runs scored and has compiled a .439 OBP.

26 May 2299 - Van Marter Holds Quincy Scoreless

The Warwick Mirelurks posted a 1-0 shutout over the Quincy Gunners today on the strength of a strong performance by Bobby Van Marter. The Mirelurks pitcher held the Gunners to 7 hits while walking 1 and fanning 4 in the route-going win.

"It feels good to be wearing a Warwick Mirelurks uniform today," the right-hander said following the game.

In 10 starts this year Van Marter has posted 5 wins while suffering 4 losses. He has pitched 74.2 innings, allowed 75 hits, struck out 55 and has a 4.82 ERA.

26 May 2299 - Yao Guai Topple Swatters, 5-0, as Waterpipe Shines

The FHE Yao Guai reigned over the Diamond City Swatters in damp conditions.

The 5-0 FHE win over Diamond City was due in large part to Nick Waterpipe. The Yao Guai first baseman was 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. The loss makes Diamond City 28-10.

W. H. Lub had a critical at-bat with two out in the top of the sixth for FHE. He came through with a run-scoring single to put FHE in front, 2-0.

"I really like what we did out there today," Lub said after the game.

The FHE Yao Guai took the win today over Diamond City, but the Swatters mound staff did what nobody else could -- they stopped the 20-game hitting streak of Yao Guai center fielder Noah Arch.

"We might have focused a bit too much on stopping Arch," Diamond City manager Bucky Bachelor commented afterward. "He had a nice hitting streak going, but the Yao Guai have other hitters and they did their job today."

Presently Arch is batting .378 and has collected 5 home runs, 30 RBIs, .403 OBP and scored 34 runs.

26 May 2299 - Synths Win on Grand Slam

The Sunshine Tidings Chemists got a sterling performance from pitcher Tony Bertha, but the Lexington Synths still prevailed, 6-2. Bertha threw 8 innings of 3-hit ball. This win makes it 5 in a row for Lexington.

Lexington won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out and Handsome Frank on the mound for Sunshine Tidings, pinch hitter Chris Eakle hit a dramatic grand slam home run, bringing Synths fans to their feet. It was Eakle's first career homer.

"This was the most excited I've been since Betsy Lou in '92," said Eakle.

26 May 2299 - With 4-2 Win, Party Boys Improve to 26-12

Nordhagen Beach Party Boys starter Chet Arthur was in a rhythm all game. He led his team to a win over the The Slog Ghouls, 4-2. Night Demon Archacki was credited with the save for Nordhagen Beach, his 16th of the season. Nordhagen Beach is now 26-12, 3 games up in the North Charles Association Brotherhood League.

The Party Boys got a big at-bat from right fielder Jonathan Angelou. For the game, Angelou went 1 for 3 with a double, while adding 3 RBI. In the bottom of the sixth, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 7th double of the season gave Nordhagen Beach a 4-2 lead.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," Arthur said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."

26 May 2299 - Adamantium One-Hits Silver Shroud, 5-0

Abernathy and Fort Hagen got after it at Tato Field.

Joel Mutfruit was a major contributor to the 5-0 Abernathy win over Fort Hagen. The Adamantium third baseman was 1 for 3 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The win belongs to Pem Pollack in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Brent Hooker took the loss for Fort Hagen.

Early in the game, Mutfruit had a 3-run home run for Abernathy. It was his 3rd home run of the season and put the Adamantium on top, 3-0.

Mutfruit called the win "a team effort."

The win elevated the Adamantium to 22-16.

Abernathy used four pitchers in holding the Shroud to one hit. Starter Bad Company Grognak exited the game in the 3rd inning after suffering an injury. He allowed one single to Mark Miller. Pem Pollack (1-0) came on in relief to earn the win, allowing no hits in 3.2 innings. Bob Parkman and Hercules Moss pitched the last 2.2 innings.

27 May 2299 - Rose Hits Two Homers in 10-6 Win for Goodneighbor

The 10-6 Goodneighbor win over University Point was due in large part to John Rose. The Hancocks center fielder went 3-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, while scoring 4 runs and driving in 2. The winning pitcher was Quincy Eloquent. He's now 7-1. He went 7 innings, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits for the Hancocks. The win gives Goodneighbor a season record of 27-12.

In the top of the seventh, Rose put his team in front with his 5th home run of the season. The solo home run, which came against Cricket McGuire, made it 7-6, Goodneighbor.

"Nice to tuck this win away," said Rose.

27 May 2299 - Niederer Goes 5-for-5

There was no storybook ending. Jason Niederer of the Atom Cats socked it to the visiting Jamaica Plain Red Rockets with a terrific 5-hit game today, but his team didn't get the win. The Cats fell, 11-4, at Coolest Field in Town.

"I don't want to sound ungrateful, but something is missing here," Niederer complained following the loss. "When you have a great game you should win the game, too."

He definitely had an unforgettable day in the batter's box, ripping out 5 hits in 5 at-bats. Atom manager Paul Stands sympathized with his center fielder, telling BNN reporters after the game that "Jason played a whale of a game, but sometimes individual brilliance is not enough."

Jason Niederer singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

This season Niederer has hit 1 home run and posted a .336 batting average.

27 May 2299 - Bather Hits 2 Home Runs in Dwellers Win

Vault 81 shortstop Knud Bather had a 5-RBI game, which helped his team beat the Oberland T-51s, 10-7. Nick Mutfruit got the win, improving to 4-2. He worked 8 innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 2. The save was credited to Dave Caveman, his 9th.

With Vault 81 leading 1-0 in the top of the first, Bather hit a slider from Lennie Landslide for a 3-run home run. It was his 5th home run of the season and put the Dwellers ahead, 4-0.

"We take it day by day here," said Bather, "and today was a good one for us."

Vault 81 has a record of 17-22, placing them 5th in the South Charles Association Railroad League.

Jeremy Bugs's consecutive-game hitting streak has now climbed to 20 games. The Oberland third baseman smacked 2 hits against the Dwellers in today's game at Graygarden Park, but he expressed mixed emotions about the streak after watching the T-51s drop the game.

"I feel good about the streak, but don't feel good when we lose," he told reporters. "I'd love to get a hit as well as a win next time so I can celebrate properly."

Bugs singled in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, flied out in the 4th, walked in the 7th and doubled in the 9th. This season Bugs is batting .376 with 7 home runs.

27 May 2299 - Ninjas Need Extra Frames to Get Past Knuckle Punchers

The Egret Ninjas and Roxbury Knuckle Punchers lit up the scoreboard.

The 14-10 Egret win over Roxbury in 10 innings was due largely to Dustin Bowfiddle. The Ninjas second baseman went 4 for 4 with 4 singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Egret has now won 3 in a row.

Egret used the timely hitting of Bill Chaney to capture the win. The pinch hitter stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the tenth inning to put the Ninjas on top, 13-10. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but he made it count.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Bowfiddle told the Egret News.

27 May 2299 - With 6-1 Win, Party Boys Improve to 27-12

Nordhagen Beach Party Boys starter Julian Shed turned in a top-notch performance against the The Slog Ghouls at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. The result was a win for the Party Boys, 6-1. Shed, now 3-4, was the winner. In 5.2 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 4, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. The Ghouls, at 23-16, have lost 4 straight games to fall four games back of Nordhagen Beach in the Brotherhood League.

The Party Boys ran into trouble in the top of the fourth. The score was 2-1, Nordhagen Beach, with no one out. The Slog, with runners on 1st and 2nd, had Boots Yellowhair at the plate. With a base hit, he could have changed the complexion of the game. Instead, he hit into a double play and the Party Boys went on to win.

Jon Hitman had two hits, including a double, with two RBI. The Boys hit five total doubles.

27 May 2299 - Adamantium Edge Past Silver Shroud, 4-3

Fans saw a dandy of a game between the Abernathy Adamantium and Fort Hagen Silver Shroud.

The Abernathy Adamantium took Fort Hagen pitcher Derek Green's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Tato Field. The final score had Abernathy getting past the Silver Shroud, 4-3. Green went 6.1 innings and allowed 1 run, striking out 8. The victory gives Abernathy a record of 23-16.

The Adamantium procured the win, in large part because of left fielder Bloatfly Williams. In the bottom of the ninth, he produced the game-winning run-scoring single.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Williams told the Abernathy Herald.

The win pulls Abernathy to just three games back of Fort Hagen. The Adamantium will try for the home sweep tomorrow.

27 May 2299 - FHE Gets 6-2 Win

The FHE Yao Guai trumped the Diamond City Swatters, 6-2, at The Great Green Jewel. FHE right fielder Joe Rathmann was terrific. He was 3 for 3 with 3 singles and 2 walks. Dave Crowfoot earned the save for FHE, his 8th. FHE is now 17-22.

FHE first baseman Nick Waterpipe helped his team take an early lead. In the top of the first, with the bases loaded, he grounded out, driving in 1 run.

"We did a lot of things right," said Waterpipe.

28 May 2299 - Rookie Gep Blasts Diamond City to Victory

Rookie first baseman Oren Gep put on a show for the home crowd as the Diamond City Swatters marched off with the 10-7 win over FHE at The Great Green Jewel. Gep was 3 for 4 with two home runs, two runs, and six RBI to lead his team to victory.

Noah Arch was at the head of a FHE Yao Guai hit parade today at The Great Green Jewel. The 25-year-old went to the plate 5 times and came away with 5 hits.

"We didn't have it today," griped Yao Guai skipper David Meatcook following the game. "Noah did fine, but as a team, we didn't do it with the bats and we didn't do it pitching."

Arch did more than fine, dominating the Swatters at the plate during his record-making 5-for-5 performance.

"Each time I went to the plate, I was thinking about hitting the ball hard somewhere," the sweet-swinging center fielder told reporters. "When I focus on that, I usually have quality at-bats."

Arch singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

This year Arch has collected a .390 batting average to date with 71 hits in 182 at-bats, 32 RBIs, 5 home runs and scored 37 times. He has played in 40 games.

28 May 2299 - Deathclaws Listless in 11-0 Loss to Hancocks

Bruce Iddings held the University Point Deathclaws to 3 hits and fashioned a fine 11-0 shutout at Gwinnett Brewery Park today.

Speaking after the game, Goodneighbor Hancocks manager Jeremy Whiteplate said "Iddings had everything going for him today."

He changed speeds effectively, stayed down, had a lot of movement," he said. "He was masterful."

Iddings rung up 9 strikeouts and surrendered 5 walks in the game.

"We couldn't get anything going. He certainly had our number," University Point manager Woody Lumpkin told reporters.

For this year Iddings has chalked up 6 wins and 4 losses in 10 starts with 74 strikeouts in 74.1 innings and a 3.63 ERA.

Offensively, Bryan Assman drove the Hancock's barrage of hits and runs. The first baseman was 3 for 4 with a home run, four runs, and three RBI. He was also hit by a pitch and stole a base.

28 May 2299 - T-51s Hurler Kawolski Tosses Masterpiece

In a very impressive mound performance, Sheng Kawolski stopped the Vault 81 Dwellers cold. The 26-year-old T-51s hurler blanked them on 5 hits to post a 6-0 triumph.

In 10 starts this season Kawolski has gathered 6 wins while suffering 2 losses. He has pitched 70.1 innings, allowed 58 hits, struck out 79 and has a 3.45 ERA.

Jonathan Abern was 2 for 4 with a triple, a run, and three RBI.

28 May 2299 - McDuff Throws 6-0 Shutout

Manny McDuff came out firing strikes and when the game ended, the Quincy Gunners hurler had struck out 6, leading Quincy past the Warwick Mirelurks, 6-0. McDuff allowed just 7 hits in the ballgame.

"I'm glad that one is in the rearview mirror," said Warwick manager Old Man Langford.

In 10 starts with 11 games pitched this year, McDuff has fashioned a 10-1 record and a 2.23 ERA. He has a three wins lead on the next best pitchers in the CBO, Quincy Eloquent and Matt Pageturner.

28 May 2299 - Adamantium Walk It Off for 24th Win of Season, Sweep Shroud

Fort Hagen first baseman Jim Tiller was sensational. He was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Abernathy beat the Silver Shroud, 9-8. The win puts Abernathy at 24-16 this season.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Abernathy catcher Dan Neo, facing Joe Verti, had a run-scoring walk. It gave the Adamantium the 9-8 win.

Neo told a Abernathy Herald reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.

28 May 2299 - Ghouls Drop 9-4 Decision, Get Swept by 1st Place Boys

Nordhagen Beach Party Boys starter Aaron Demps was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the The Slog Ghouls, 9-4. The Party Boys have an impressive 28-12 record after sweeping the Ghouls. They now have a five-game lead.

In the bottom of the second, Michael Fogcrawler hit a 3-run home run. The 9th home run of the season for the Nordhagen Beach left fielder put the Party Boys on top, 4-1.

"The fans pay the tickets and help us do what we do, so we like to put on a show for them," Fogcrawler told the Nordhagen Beach News.

Tyke 02-28-2021 03:47 AM

A good week for the Boys. Nice to put the Ghouls in their place, plus the Silver Shroud being swept by Abernathy.

It certainly looks like the Boys are solidly in control of the NCA currently, most certainly in a strong playoff position due to third place Finch Farm and Salem being 11 games back. They have a little Monday news, too, since there was something I missed about Sunday's game.

The Nordhagen Beach got to see star RF Tomas Jones play yesterday, going 1 for 4 with a double, walk, a run, and an RBI in his return to the lineup over rookie Jonathan Angelou.

Jones has been part of the trade rumor mill where the Boys could improve other positions, like shortstop or solidify its pitching staff.

The Boys also called up Pointie Shroud from Greentop Nursery and started him over Taboo Richardson at shortstop on Sunday. Shroud was 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs.

Nordhagen Beach also placed pitcher Julian Shed on the 7-day injury list after he suffered a strained back in his start on Saturday. He is expected to miss one or two starts. Aaron Demps will act as a starter in Shed's absence.

29 May 2299 - Great Week for Concord's Dan Erb

Dan Erb demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

29 May 2299 - CA Premier Player Picked

It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Commonwealth Association, but last week Steve McGuckin of the Breakheart Banks Behemoths reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. McGuckin rocked opposing pitching for a .692 average (9-for-13), 2 home runs and 2 RBIs to come away with the award.

Presently McGuckin is hitting .306 with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs. He has played in 23 games and scored 12 times.

29 May 2299 - MA Presents Player of the Week Trophy

At the age of 28, Ryan Wegott might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Fiddler's Green right fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .636 batting average. For his efforts Wegott collected the Massachusetts Association Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 7 hits in 11 at-bats, 3 home runs and 7 RBIs last week in 3 games.

This season Wegott is batting .409 with 36 hits, 9 home runs, 24 RBIs, 17 walks, .505 OBP and has scored 31 runs. He has played in 24 games.

29 May 2299 - Weekly Team Power Rankings

Mystic Pines and Eastlake continue to jostle for the first spot as they continue to hold onto the top records in the BMU. Trinity Plaza and Breakheart Banks are the other top teams in their leagues, though in the Dark Hollow Pond League, the Greentop Nursery Night People are riding an eight-game win streak to pull to a game back of the Behemoths.

We may also start to see some shifts as teams will become more active in June in trading for prospects while trying to secure a future move. That means teams struggling in the CBO could see their BMU teams improve and start to make moves.

Here are the current team power rankings for Boston Minor Union:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Mystic Pines Raybathers (155.0, +)
2) Eastlake Aquaboys (152.5, -)
3) Trinity Plaza Snipers (134.5, o)

29 May 2299 - Hrdlicka Week's #1 Player

25-year-old Myturtle Hrdlicka made a few Quantum headlines during this past week as the rookie first baseman proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and Nuka World League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 9 hits in 21 at-bats to put up a .429 average. Hrdlicka collected 1 home run, 5 RBIs and scored 2 runs.

So far this season Hrdlicka is batting .304 with 7 home runs.

Analysis

Nordhagen Beach made the leap in the Power Rankings to #1 this week after an impressive record against tough competition. By splitting with Fort Hagen and sweeping The Slog, the Boys' 4-1 week makes them the kings of the North Charles Association. Not only do the Party Boys move into first in the Power Rankings, but they do not seem to have much competition in the Brotherhood League, which could be key in securing them Home Field Advantage. There is still plenty of season left, but the Boys are partying like it's 2299.

The rest of the Top 5 is a Who's Who of 2298 playoff teams: Diamond City, Goodneighbor, Abernathy, and Fort Hagen. The Adamantium also made a big move by sweeping the Silver Shroud this week pushing them just two games back of the 2298 battle that could be another down-to-wire affair in 2299. Starlight at #8 is on those two teams' heels, acting as the best 3rd-place team in the CBO.

No team has been super hot in the South Charles Association like the Boys and Adamantium are in the NCA. Not surprisingly, the Hancocks and Oberland T-51s (#6) are currently riding the best 10-game stretch at 7-3.

Prospects/Rookies to Watch

In this feature, we're going to look at a few of the prospects and rookies out there and how they are doing so far in 2299, as well as what might be happening for them in their CBO futures. Ten featured players are listed alphabetically. [StLee's note: I know who my active readers* are based on comments in the dynasty, but I think I have 'derived' names of other dynasty writers* whom I read. If you read this and want to know if/when you're in, let me know!]

Pockets Aintfull* - #41, CF, The Slog
Aintfull has played sparingly as the Ghouls' backup outfielder. Still, he has been taking advantage of his chances. In 11 games played, with four starts, Aintfull is batting .364/.391/.500 on 8 for 22 batting. He has three doubles, walked once, scored four times, knocked in two runs, and stole three bases.

Harry Byrd - #33, 2B, Vault 81
Byrd is not likely to displace one of the CBO's best 2Bers in Bubb Islander. Still, he is immensely talented and would be better served playing in the BMU than sitting the bench at Vault 81. He could be trade bait or Islander could be.

Ugio Church* - #26, SP, Breakheart Banks (Salem)
Church has pitched in seven games, starting six for Breakheart Banks. He is 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA, so he is not getting a lot of run support though he is pitching well, allowing nine earned runs in 41.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 37 and walked 20, so he needs to improve those numbers before he is CBO-ready. If he can work on and improve his fourth pitch, a change up, he will be ready.

Oren Gep* - #47, 1B, Diamond City
Gep is warming up and in great contention for the SCA's Red Rocket Rookie Award. He is batting .240/.310/.455 on 37 for 154 batting with seven doubles, a triple, weigh home runs, 18 runs, 26 RBI, 13 walks, and 54 strikeouts. He most certainly needs to work on striking out less, averaging more than one per game. He'll be a star once he turns strikeouts into contacts.

Tommy Hein - #55, SP, Outpost Zimonja (The Slog)
Hein started seven games for the Ghouls, going 4-1 with a 4.00 ERA. However, The Slog has recently moved him to Outpost Zimonja where he has not responded well to the demotion. In two starts there, he is 0-1 with a 14.21 ERA, having allowed 10 earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched.

Ayag Mour* - #17, C, Jamaica Plain
Mour has been an everyday starter for the Red Rockets, but he is having some rookie struggles at a tough position. He is batting .235/.296/.369 (35 for 149) with eight doubles, four home runs, 14 runs, 17 RBI, nine walks, and 54 strikeouts in 40 games started.

Lannie Tykeson* - #17, 1B/SP, Taffington Boathouse (Easy Town)
Tykeson is doing OK at pitcher, which is what is holding him back. With the Assaultrons struggling, though, he could see players ahead of him get dealt and get his own callup. With six starts, Tykeson is 2-3 with a 4.65 ERA in 31.0 innings pitched. He has shown improvement with only one bad start out of the six. He also has walked 17 and struck out 41. With 20 starts at 1B, Tykeson is a great hitter, though he has been surprisingly missing the long ball all season, having hit none on the season. He is projected to be a power hitter, so that is a strange stat. Still, he is 26 of 74 (.351/.400/.419) on the season, with his Slugging Percentage being of concern due to only having five extra-base hits (five doubles).

Racky Westheim* - #20, C, Fiddler's Green (Oberland)
Westheim has yet to find his footing with the bat, going 22 for 96 (.229/.267/.260) with three doubles, nine runs, nine RBI, three walks, and 34 strikeouts in 24 games started. He has been excellent behind the plate, though, throwing out 2 of 8 with very few teams attempting steals against him.

Any Why* - #23, CF, Eastlake Aquaboys (FHE)
Why ask why? The Eastlake catcher is showing good progress in his second season in the FHE franchise. He is 24 for 85 (.282/.358/.565) with eight doubles, five triples, two home runs, 15 runs, and 12 RBI. He is also a beast of range in the OF, though he needs to keep his concentration on routine fly balls.
