Westheim 08-15-2022 03:10 PM

This would have been the week to take off to watch this crucial 4-game set with the Barves. Unfortunately I was not foresightful (that sounds like it's not a word, but I like it) enough, and instead will have the first full week in September off. That's Gnats, Pirates, Fish then, which at least offers a chance to see the odd hopeless team get slaughered, so there's that.

Yep, I'm glad these things are "merely flesh wounds" to borrow from Monty Python but having Escobar only bat from one side of the plate doesn't seem like a great long-term plan and Guillorme isn't real fleet even with two hamstrings... plus with Guillorme as the only SS backup they need at least that, and fast.

Y'know what? They can lose by a dozen without me for all I care.

Jeff McNeil (4-for-4) - well done, Jeff, you're awesome; keep living your truth!
Literally everybody else - you walk back to the hotel, boys. Preferably by way of Chattanooga.

It's falling apart, isn't it?

And I don't just mean every single pitcher on the roster.

Turned around fast, I really thought the bllpen would melt but here we are. They survived without Jake and Scherzer, I suppose losing Carrasco and Walker is better than losing either of them again :(

Main issue today: "Brett Baty" is not a yellable name like "PEEEEETE" is, or "JEFF MCNEIL!!!"

I'll just ignore the pile of casualties left and right that got us to the point where the yellability of "Brett Baty" became a concern in the first place.

It's a case of a misplaced "t". If he were "Bret Batty," you could do something with his last name: "BAAAATEEEE" or some witticism concerning his occupational tool.

Leftovers from Friday’s game.

1) Where would we be without Pete?
2) “If you follow the Mets on social media, you’d think they have lost every game they played this season” – they haven’t??
3) If you’re up by four early and Jeff McNeil looks like his thumb is about to come off, maybe replace him with Yolmer Sanchez?
4) The Phanatic still has some cheese to grind with Keith Hernandez, and it's gonna get ugly indeed.

It's funny, I was thinking last night how before the season began I was thinking "meh, they didn't add enough offense to change their destiny". Then, they came out of the gate in first place and basically ended up there, and ow they're winning games with Ruf/Hambino, Naquin, and possibly this new kid they got from PIT to catch. I wasn't (much) more impressed with that crop, but danged if they didn't re-invent themselves while in first place. It's like an NHL season almost, where the team after Christmas is totally different.

I'm hopeful Baty is what he looks like, or at least a hitting upgrade over Escobar even if he isn't, but I'm back to worrying about depth too. Everybody's dinged up in August but like you say about McNeil they can't grind the starters down for the next month and be in a good place in October.

Finally, Pete stole a base the other day and is a fine defender, seems like a great community/clubhouse guy, and (in an admittedly weak field) is already on the short list for best Mets 1B ever in terms of hitting. If he stays healthy he might be the real face of the franchise they haven't had since Seaver, who stayed the face of the franchise even as they lost him TWICE stupidly. Even if they don't win a WS with him I think he ends up with a statue... and if they do win one maybe they can make it a Colossus astride Roosevelt Ave!

Tyler "Windmill" Naquin is now 0-8 with 8 K since the fifth inning on Tuesday.

Why's Canha not playing? Always remember, kids:

Who can? Canha can!

How dare you, Canha is righty and so is Wheeler. You might as well just divide by zero and kill us all!

Westheim 08-20-2022 04:04 PM

Fun Fact: prior to Canha flying out to Castellanos just now, him and Naquin both had a .764 OPS. :p

Ha, ha, nice visual. Picture this with bat in hand instead of flame, and Roosevelt Avenue between his feet. And more clothes. :)

Pants and gloves enough? :p

How exactly did it go from "Finally we have deGrom, Scherzer, Walker, Bassitt, and Carrasco going in order" to "He made one proper start in AAA and has the accent on the wrong vowel" in like five days again?

Edit: Following that bomb by Alec Bohm, I sure hope the rookie won't be the buttó of the joke for infinity.

I'm such a riot.

The same way DeGrom/Syndergaard/Matz/Wheeler pitched together like once?

The second kid looked pretty good, I imagine after 3 innings he went straight out to a one-way car rental to be returned in Syracuse.

Bonus round: "buttare" in Italian means "to throw something out/away", so that kid's name is Joe Ithrewitout! :D

Uh, fellows? [Nervously twiddles his hat in hand.] We're in a bad way. These two games ... can you see your way clear to let us have them? After all, we gave you the previous two  ... uh, I mean :(.

Much obliged. Hope to see you again in October! :thumbup1:

Not if they keep hitting like that.

Or pitching like that.
