News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

3 July 2299 - Heinzerling Wins CA Player of the Week Prize

At the age of 28, John Heinzerling might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Mystic Pines right fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .500 batting average. For his efforts Heinzerling collected the Commonwealth Association Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 8 hits in 16 at-bats, 3 home runs and 9 RBIs last week in 4 games.

Currently Heinzerling is batting .407 with 6 home runs, 25 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

3 July 2299 - Vertz Wins MA Player of the Week Honors

It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Massachusetts Association, but last week Justin Vertz of the Cabot House Rayguns reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Vertz rocked opposing pitching for a .667 average (8-for-12), no home runs and 4 RBIs to come away with the award.

In his season totals, Vertz has 4 home runs, .313 BA, .367 OBP, 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He has played in 41 games.

3 July 2299 - BNN Stats: Starting Pitching Rookie Leaders

So, which rookie starting pitchers are leading the Boston Minor Union in ERA?

Unrivaled Grossman, CIT, 2.10
Tim McCormac, COLL, 2.15
Allen Puckett, ZIM, 2.20
Brian Cox, CIT, 3.16
Deedee Martinson*, CAB, 3.31

3 July 2299 - Weekly Team Power Rankings

The Somerville Place Sentry Bots have come charging up the Power Rankings to break the monotony. Riding a six-game winning streak, the Bots trail the Eastlake Aquaboys by just one game in a suddenly tight Glowing Sea League where any of the Aquaboys, Bots, or Fiddler's Green T-60s could take control of that league during trade season.

Here are the current team power rankings for Boston Minor Union:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Breakheart Banks Behemoths (135.3, o)
2) Somerville Place Sentry Bots (128.5, ++)
3) Mystic Pines Raybathers (128.3, +)

3 July 2299 - Feature: NWL Newcomers

With a few players coming over from the Commonwealth Baseball Organization, let's take a quick look at some of those players and what they bring to the NWL.

3B Ryan Bobb, Wild - Acquired 26 June from Sunshine Tidings

A four-year started in for the Chemists, Bobb is expected to electrify the NWL with his hitting. Though not a power hitter, he can hit for average, posting a career high .352 in in 2297. He was also a two-time IL Robotics Defense Award winner, making him a star.

His CBO career numbers below:

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1615910589

RF David Lockpick, Orange - Acquired 27 June from Finch Farm

Originally the Four Leafs' 16th-round pick in the 2296 Inaugural Draft, Lockpick could never break into the starting nine. He is considered to have a great eye for drawing walks, but that has not been put on display much in the CBO or BMU. He could be a standout for getting on base in the NWL, though, where pitching is a little wilder at times.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1615910589

SP David Tech, Dark - Acquired 1 July from Easy Town

Drafted in the 7th round of the 2296 CBO Inaugural Draft, Tech could never earn his star in the CBO. Though he was a four-year started with the Assaultrons, he was never quite good enough. In the NWL, though, he may not be the league's best pitcher with a four-pitch arsenal. He most certainly showed his ability in his first start in the NWL for the Bloodworms.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1615910589

SP John Diner, Victory - Acquired 2 July from Warwick

A four-year starter for the Mirelurks, Diner is the biggest star to come here. Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2296 CBO Inaugural Draft, Diner has all the tools to be the best the NWL has. Diner has six pitches, though his stuff is average. He is also great at getting batters to ground into double plays, something that will mean he will pitch lots of low-scoring games.

He led the Minutemen League in strikeouts and WAR in 2296 and WHIP and WAR in 2297. Still, he has had a career ERA of over 4.00, which made him expendable for a struggling team.

Analysis

The top of the rankings looks mostly the same, but there was one team throughout the Power Rankings that stood out: Warwick (#17). Dropping to #24 in the rankings for their first-time ever, the Mirelurks responded with a 4-1 week, including the weekend sweep at Jamaica Plain (#14).

Lexington (#6) also made a huge leap as they have entered the wildcard sweepstakes in the Institute League, winning six straight and completing a perfect 5-0 week with sweeps over Finch Farm (#21) and Concord (#19). Though the Synths are in 4th place in the IL, they currently only trail Fort Hagen (#4) in the Power Rankings. Should they stay hot, the Synths could pass up both Abernathy (#9) and Starlight (#7) for 3rd and 2nd place, respectively.

Nordhagen Beach (#2) jumped back over Diamond City (#3) after a solid 4-1 week. The Swatters were 3-2, including splitting their midweek series at Goodneighbor (#1), which went 3-2 on the week.

Quincy (#13) had the biggest drop and finds themselves in a battle for the wildcard in the Minutemen League after a 2-3 week, including a series loss at the Hancocks. The Gunners are now just two games ahead of Jamaica Plain (#14)--which went 2-3 with a sweep at Oberland (#8) and being swept at home against the Mirelurks--and University Point (#12) who had a 3-2 week with a split with FHE (#16) and a series win vs Atom (#22).

3 July 2299 - Red, White, and Blue Week Highlighted with CBO All-Stars

The 2299 CBO All-Star HR Derby and Game will be played today and tomorrow, respectively, during Red, White, and Blue Week, a celebration of the history of the Commonwealth.

Today's action will see eight of the top home run hitters in the CBO face off for a battle of who is the best. Current home run leader Paladin Danse of Egret will be the favored player this week at The Stone House in Quincy. Also joining are Cody Flatt of Jamaica Plain, Ginger Rogers of Oberland, Bryan Assman of Goodneighbor, Joe Mahaney of Finch Farm, Wayne Lacy of Diamond City, Chris Hirshfield of Roxbury, and Kory Richardson of University Point. Seven of the eight CBO home run leaders are in the South Charles Association, so it will be a home-field advantage to them.

Tomorrow, the best of the best face off in the All-Star Game. Reports are that the T-51s' Sheng Kawolski (9-4, 3.15) and Salem's Tony Bertha (8-2, 2.66) will get the nod on the mound. Bertha is on the team thanks to his time with Sunshine Tidings, before being dealt to Egret and then the Witch Hats.

3 July 2299 - Home Run Derby Results

Ginger Rogers and Paladin Danse put on quite the show at The Stone House during the 2299 Home Run Challenge. Oberland T-51s right fielder Rogers ended up victorious after a final round score of 21-20.

"I was pretty nervous tonight, but hearing the crowd's reaction to my first homer calmed me down and I got in a nice groove," said Rogers.

In 173 career games Rogers is hitting at a .237 pace with 163 hits with 35 doubles, 4 triples and 53 homers while scoring 140 runs and racking up 139 RBIs. He logged 97 walks and owns a .340 on-base percentage.

4 July 2299 - All-Star Game Result: Young Star Helps Propel North Charles Association to Win in Midseason Classic

Zeldolph Violet said the annual all-star game is mostly for the fans to enjoy, but the players have a lot of fun too.

"It's a great time to get that much talent on one ball diamond," he said. "You feel fortunate to even be part of it."

Violet wasn't just a part of the game, he was named the game MVP, as his North Charles Association All-Stars won 3-1 over the South Charles Association All-Stars.

Violet went 2 for 2 in the game to earn the nod as the game's best.

In his 173-game career, Violet has hit at a .315 clip and collected 209 hits with 75 doubles, 6 triples, 24 homers, and 125 RBIs.

5 July 2299 - Warwick Mirelurks Ship Maine to Vault 81

The players apparently knew they were on the trading block, so it did not surprise one of them when he learned that he had been traded to Warwick. "Got my bags packed already," he said, when reached for comment. The Mirelurks will receive 33-year-old 3B Dylan Fosdick, while 19-year-old minor league RHP Jake Maine will go to the Vault 81 Dwellers.

5 July 2299 - Fort Hagen-FHE Trade: Burgess for Crummie

After prolonged negotiations Fort Hagen agreed to ship 20-year-old minor league 2B Howie Burgess and a 5th round draft pick to FHE for 20-year-old RHP Loop Bikameal, 19-year-old RHP Ali Crummie and a 5th round draft pick. The deal is awaiting confirmation from the league office but neither team expects any hang-ups.

"It took longer than expected," said one GM, "but we knew that the deal was going to happen."

Fosdick is hitting .333 in 2299 with 1 RBIs and no home runs.

5 July 2299 - Vault 81 Dwellers Ship Alizm to Concord

Sometimes a change of scenery can be a beneficial to a baseball player. That is the hope in Vault 81 and Concord as the teams came to an agreement today which sends 20-year-old minor league RHP Emperry Alizm and a 5th round draft pick to the Radstags and 22-year-old 1B Jason Robinson, 20-year-old minor league LHP Manny Madrid and a 3rd round draft pick to the Dwellers. "Only time will tell if this is the right move for everyone," stated the Concord GM.

Batting .246 to date, Robinson has 13 home runs and 51 RBIs.

5 July 2299 - Finch Farm's Finch Foams Figuratively

Finch Farm Four Leafs owner Abraham Finch expressed to BNN yesterday that he was quite unhappy with the look of his roster.

"We have the oldest roster in baseball, and they're not playing well," Finch said. "If [GM] Nick [Jones] and [manager] Wiley [Boat] don't start making some moves, I will do it for them."

It is not exactly true that the Four Leafs have the oldest roster, but they are up there, especially compared to the productivity of those older players.

According to Finch, he expected the team to start moving back towards the success of the 2296 squad when they won the Brotherhood League. PAM had a different idea, though, picking the Four Leafs to be tied with league mates, the County Crossing Bloodbugs, for the CBO's worst record. Finch Farm is not doing that poorly, but they do not appear to have a chance to compete for a playoff spot. It is also questionable how tradeable players on the team are.

Without sacrificing some of its young stars, like LF Danny Honeycutt, 3B Peter Tatoeater, 1B Joe Mahaney, or RF Matt Basile, many other position players and starting pitchers are solidly ranked in the lower half of the league. In addition, trading away any of the team's prospects could have long-term negative effects.

"Finch Farm is in a poor situation," one anonymous scout said. "The truth is that they have not made a lot of winning moves. Their best action now is to ride out the bad they have, let their young guys develop, and edge up in the standings each year."

7 July 2299 - Eloquent Takes Charge, Blanks Atom, 7-0

Quincy Eloquent kept the opposition off the scoreboard and the Goodneighbor Hancocks were all smiles after winning 7-0 against the Atom Cats at Coolest Field in Town today. The left-handed Eloquent gave up no runs in his start, permitted 7 hits and had 5 strikeouts.

"If there was a stat for 'team shutout,' this would be it," Eloquent said later. "My catcher called a great game, guys delivered at the plate and when I messed something up the guys behind me were where they needed to be."

In 19 starts this season Eloquent has rung up a 12-4 record and a 3.75 ERA.

7 July 2299 - Gary Lifts Four Leafs to 16-6 Triumph

Gary Gary Gary was a major contributor to the 16-6 Finch Farm win over Salem. The Four Leafs catcher was 4 for 5 with a home run, 3 singles, and a walk. He scored 4 runs and drove in 2. Blaine Phrasemaker was the winning pitcher. Over 7 innings, he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, with no walks and 4 strikeouts. The victory puts Finch Farm at 26-40.

Lux Schwartz had a big hit for Finch Farm in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Finch Farm leading 8-1, Schwartz hit a bases-clearing double. It was his 12th double of the season and put the Four Leafs up, 11-1.

"We got the victory," said Schwartz. "That's all that matters at the end of the day."

7 July 2299 - Wallcrawler Excels, But Knuckle Punchers Win

The Roxbury Knuckle Punchers defeated the FHE Yao Guai, 9-6. Doing his part was shortstop Hose Wallcrawler, who was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. Jimmy "Peanut" Carty came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings. His record now stands at 2-0. The Knuckle Punchers raised their record to 26-40.

Early in the game, first baseman Matt Ratican had a 2-run double for Roxbury. It was his 24th double of the season and put the Knuckle Punchers on top, 2-1.

"I just tried to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Ratican.

Po Greenzone of the FHE Yao Guai and Tyler Shuster of the Roxbury Knuckle Punchers will be on the sidelines for a few days. They have been suspended for 2 and 5 games respectively by the league office for causing the bench-emptying free-for-all at the recent Yao Guai-Knuckle Punchers game at BosCom Circle.

Neither player had any comment about the suspensions. Both clubs told BNN Greenzone and Shuster will begin serving them soon.

Greenzone is hitting .220 in 2299 with 19 RBIs and 3 home runs.

In 17 starts this season Shuster has registered a 4-9 record and a 5.77 ERA.

7 July 2299 - Waples Delivers Clutch At-Bat for Abernathy in Walk-Off Win

The Adamantium faced a stiff challenge from Concord pitcher Chris Radsco, but persevered to claim a win at Tato Field. The final score was 2-1. Radsco went 7.1 innings and allowed no runs. Abernathy pitcher T-Bone Heagy got the win, upping his record to 7-3. Bell Franklin got the loss. Concord has now lost 4 consecutive games.

In the bottom of the ninth, with one out and the game tied, 1-1, second baseman Jim Waples won it for Abernathy. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Waples hit a 1-0 changeup from Bell Franklin for a run-scoring single, giving his team the 2-1 win.

"We played a good game and came out on top," said Waples.

7 July 2299 - Lady Killers Raise Rally Flag, Beat Fort Hagen, 5-3

The Starlight Lady Killers had to overcome a fine effort from Fort Hagen pitcher Mike Cartrette to grab a narrow 5-3 win at Hubris Comics Park. Cartrette went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs. The winner was Starlight reliever Spider Caddell, now 3-1. The loser was Matt Demented. Larry Undertaker was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 19 of 22 save opportunities.

Starlight used a clutch hit from David Seaweed to get the win. The right fielder drilled a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Lady Killers ahead, 5-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"I like our moxie," said Lady Killers manager Eric Bendure.

With the win, Starlight pushed its record to 37-29.

7 July 2299 - Party Boys Go Down to Defeat, 7-4

The Slog right-hander Bobby DeLaune pitched his team to victory over the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys at Tarberry Field Forever. The final score was 7-4. The triumph puts The Slog at 34-32 for the season.

The Slog took a 7-4 lead on Terry O'Dell's 8th double of the season. The bases-clearing double, which O'Dell hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Nordhagen Beach pitcher Night Demon Archacki visibly frustrated.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said O'Dell.

7 July 2299 - Ninjas Post 3-2 Win Over Diamond City

The Egret Ninjas got a stellar performance from pitcher Phlip Wallace, who handcuffed the Diamond City offense en route to a win, 3-2, at The Great Green Jewel. With the win, the Ninjas improved to 31-35.

Egret used the bat of Paladin Danse to get the win. The left fielder hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put the Ninjas ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it did its damage. Crops Gerdenheimer hit his 10th for Egret for their first run.

"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said Diamond City manager Bucky Bachelor. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."

Wally Warwick, freshly returned from injury thanks to a stimpack, was 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run (7), two runs, and an RBI.

8 July 2299 - McCort Makes CBO Debut with Masterpiece

Three years ago, he was just two months into a jail sentence for a crime of passion. Now, Vince McCort has made his CBO debut against the team he joined when he found himself in trouble.

In a seemingly effortless performance, Vince McCort of the Vault 81 Dwellers shot down the Oberland T-51s 3-0 on a 4-hit shutout.

"Vince was just locating so well and using his pitches," Vault 81 manager Jason Personhood said later. "He wasn't leaving anything over the plate."

McCort recorded 6 strikeouts and 1 walk in a strong outing.

"When he needed to make pitches, he elevated his game," Oberland manager Dirk Steadyhand said in his postgame comments to BNN. "We couldn't get a key hit off him."

McCort was originally signed by Oberland as an undrafted free agent. He was not drafted in the 2296 CBO Inaugural Draft due to "character problems," which included a fiery temper. McCort repaid that chance by murdering a man's pet mole rat and unintentionally killing the man.

After the game, McCort addressed his past. "I regret that day every day," he said. "It will always define me. But I worked hard in Parsons to be a better person and never react that way again. The chems certainly help. Still, I am a better me, and I went out to pitch today to show that people can change. Sure, I'll get heckled in road games, but I can use that for energy instead of rage."

8 July 2299 - Benton Rips Warwick for 5 Hits

No matter what the Warwick Mirelurks threw at him today, Bryan Benton hit it. He easily handled Mirelurks pitching, going 5 for 6 and helping the Gunners to a 15-12 triumph at The Homestead.

"The way I was swinging today, I think I could have closed my eyes and hit the ball," he told BNN reporters in the postgame interview.

Told of Benton's quip, Mirelurks skipper Old Man Langford said he "would take him up on that next time."

Bryan Benton singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, struck out in the 7th, hit a GRAND SLAM off Danny Scorcher in the 8th and hit a two-run single in the 9th.

This season Benton is batting .343 with 54 RBIs, 44 runs scored and 10 home runs.

The Mirelurks' Melon Sanderson also had a day at the plate. He was 3 for 4 with two home runs, two walks, three runs, and four RBI.

8 July 2299 - Swatters Top Ninjas, 12-0, Behind Mannson

Diamond City starter X10-44 Mannson kept the Egret offense in check, while his team cruised to a win, 12-0. The win puts Diamond City at 47-20 this season.

It was a masterful performance from the popular Mannson, who notched 10 strikeouts in 8.2 innings while allowing 2 hits. Mannson, who is tied for 8th in the SCA with a 1.19 WHIP, goes to 8-3 on the year with 110 strikeouts.

Said losing manager Kip Bomb: "Give the Swatters credit. They took advantage of our mistakes."

8 July 2299 - Shed Hurls Party Boys to Shutout Victory

Julian Shed scattered 7 hits over 9 innings, going the distance in the 8-0 Nordhagen Beach Party Boys victory over the The Slog Ghouls at Tarberry Field Forever. The 32-year-old Shed whiffed 2 and allowed no walks in the game.

"Not perfect today, but I'll definitely take it," Shed said later. "I made a couple mistakes but thankfully they didn't get all of them and the guys behind me cleaned things up."

Shed has made 14 starts so far this year and put up a 8-4 won-lost record with a 2.57 ERA. In 84 innings he has allowed 65 hits, walked 29 and struck out 63.

8 July 2299 - Church Excels, But Silver Shroud Win

The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud withstood an impressive performance by Starlight left fielder Jesus Church to defeat the Lady Killers, 9-7, at Hubris Comics Park. Church went 4 for 5 with a home run and 2 doubles, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Radscorpion Johnson picked up the win in relief for Fort Hagen, while Sneaker Sewell took the loss. Curtis Thriceshot was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 20 of 22 save opportunities.

Bridgewater, Massachusetts-born Mark Miller came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the seventh, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and the Silver Shroud trailing 6-5, he hit a 2-run single to center to put Fort Hagen on top.

"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Miller said.

With the win, Fort Hagen upped its record to 44-23.

With 1 hit at Hubris Comics Park today, Alec Bullets added another game to his hitting streak -- the Starlight second baseman has now hit safely for 30 games in a row. But the hitting feat wasn't enough for the Lady Killers today, as they fell to the Shroud.

"Frankly, I don't care about hits," Fort Hagen manager Mark Andersen said later. "I'll let him get 5 hits in 5 at-bats if it means we get a win."

Bullets flied out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, struck out in the 4th, struck out in the 6th and struck out in the 8th.

Presently Bullets is batting .319 with 79 hits and 4 home runs. He has knocked in 35 runs and scored 50 times. His 30-game hitting streak is now the second-longest in CBO history behind Sunshine Tiding's Amari Nukes' 38-game streak in 2298.

Not to be outdone, Fort Hagen's Jim Tiller extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to 20 games today. The 21-year-old Silver Shroud first baseman collected 3 hits in 4 at-bats.

"Of course it's going to end," he said. "I'm just enjoying it until then."

Tiller flied out in the 1st, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th and singled in the 7th.

In the current season, Tiller has put up a .354 batting average with 99 hits, 15 home runs, 51 RBI and scored 50 runs.

9 July 2299 - Red-Hot Sphinx Cools Off Fort Hagen

Justin Sphinx shut out the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud 1-0 on a 4-hit masterpiece for the Starlight Lady Killers at Hubris Comics Park today.

"He was kind of teasing them with his off-speed stuff, and his fastball was moving everywhere," Starlight skipper Eric Bendure said afterward.

Sphinx registered 5 strikeouts and issued 3 walks in pitching a gem.

"We just didn't swing the bats very well. Or else he just pitched good, whichever way you want to look at it," said Fort Hagen manager Mark Andersen after the defeat.

This year Sphinx has compiled a 11-4 record with a 4.23 ERA in 17 starts.

9 July 2299 - Notes: Starlight-Fort Hagen Hit Streak News

Hit Streak Now at 31 for Bullets: Lady Killers second baseman Alec Bullets has extended his hitting streak to 31 games. He went 1-for-4 in today's game against the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud. Starlight won the ballgame 1-0.

"Got a hit and a win," he said later. "OK, I'll take it."

Alec Bullets grounded out in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th and singled in the 8th.

This season Bullets has delivered 80 hits in 252 at-bats for a .317 average with 4 home runs. He is getting on base at a .379 clip and his totals also include 35 RBIs and 50 runs scored. This year Bullets has played in 62 games.

Lady Killers End Tiller's Streak: Jim Tiller of the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud came up empty at the plate today and went hitless in 3 at-bats for the first time in 20 games. Making matters even worse for the first baseman, Fort Hagen dropped the game to the Starlight Lady Killers 1-0.

"It was not a good day today," Tiller told the press in postgame comments. "We lost the game and the streak is over."

To date this season Tiller is hitting .350 with 15 home runs.

Lady Killers Stop Dungan at 22: Well Done Dungan, shortstop for the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud, gave it a good try, but his time chasing history came to an end when he went hitless in 4 tries against the Starlight Lady Killers today. Not only did the Lady Killers break his 22-game hitting streak, they also beat Fort Hagen by the score of 1-0.

"Now that the streak has ended, I can admit I'll breathe a bit easier the next time I step up to bat," Dungan said, speaking with the media after the game. "It was tough because I put a little pressure on myself. Now that it's over, I will definitely be a little bit looser at the plate."

For the season Dungan has produced 96 hits in 292 at-bats for a .329 average with no home runs and gotten on base at a .367 clip.

9 July 2299 - Mass Lifts Dwellers to Win

The Vault 81 Dwellers beat the Oberland T-51s, 9-1. Vault 81 pitcher and Barnstable Town, Massachusetts, native Edwin Mass led the way. With the win, Vault 81 upped its record to 34-34.

Mass, who dominated for Vault 81, earned the victory to move to 6-7. He was in control the whole game, scattering 6 hits over 9 innings, while striking out 6. Oberland batters could never bunch up enough hits to produce a rally.

"I found a nice groove out there," said Mass.

9 July 2299 - Deathclaws Defeat Red Rockets, 12-2, in 10

University Point picked up a win at Red Rockets Stadium, bumping off the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets, 12-2, in 10 innings. Pitcher Quentin Malone was a major reason the Deathclaws emerged victorious. University Point now has a record of 34-34 with the win.

The outcome might have been different for University Point, had it not been for Aaron Nukacola, the 19-year old shortstop. Nukacola stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put University Point up, 3-2. For the game, he was 2 for 6, including 1 double and 1 single.

"We did a lot of things right," said Nukacola.

Kory Richardson added a bases-clearing triple in the last inning, along with doubles by Erns Gold, Jason Harris, and Kelvin Blueprint.

UP's Ryan Morris and JP's Aaron Erickson both homered in the game.

9 July 2299 - Party Boys Win, 9-5, at The Slog

Behind a solid performance from first baseman Dustin Mart, the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys defeated the The Slog Ghouls, 9-5. Mart was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once for the Party Boys. Derek Gist was the winner. Over 7 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. The win elevated the Party Boys to 49-19.

In the first inning, Mart had a 2-run home run for Nordhagen Beach. It was his 12th home run of the season and put the Party Boys on top, 3-0.

"I felt good up there," said Mart. "I saw the ball well."

Five Party Boys had at least two hits apiece. Jonathan Angelou led the team by going 4 for 5 with a double, two runs, and an RBI. Jon Hitman and Brian Masterson both homered.

9 July 2299 - Swatters Snag 8-2 Win

The Diamond City Swatters topped the Egret Ninjas, 8-2, with youngster Oren Gep playing a key role. Gep was 2 for 4 with a home run. He scored 2 times and drove in 4 for the Swatters in the win. The triumph puts Diamond City at 48-20 for the season.

The game was all tied up in the bottom of the eighth, until Gep delivered big-time for Diamond City, stroking a dramatic 2-run single off Nick Poppa. The game-changing hit put the Swatters on top, 4-2.

Gep told a Diamond City News reporter that he was "more than satisfied" with the win.

10 July 2299 - Diamond City Working Out Own Players at Catcher

Not happy with their production at catcher, the Diamond City Swatters are working out some of their own players to see if they can step up at catcher.

"We love our guys," Swatters manager Bucky Bachelor said, "but we're trying to win [a championship] here. We need some hits from that position, but we're just not getting them."

Because of offensive struggles at the position, Diamond City sent usual starter Jazz Stockton to Natick Banks and called up Nick Minnier because of his defensive abilities.

Among the players most considered to have a shot, Big Leaguers 1B Jason Watts if going to try to switch to catcher.

"Watts has a good bat," Bachelor said, "but his defense has not been CBO ready. He looked like he could block the ball well behind the plate, though, so Coach [Scott] Vetson is going to try him out there."

Analysis

Nordhagen Beach returns to the top spot in this short week due to the All-Star break with only three games played per team. The Party Boys took care of business in a road visit to #13 The Slog, taking two of three in the series. It is strange to state, but the Party Boys have slugged themselves to a .721 winning percentage in what seems like quiet success. They have just consistently won throughout the season, having lost only one series all season, a May 5-7 trip to Finch Farm (#19). That means the Boys have won 11 of 12 Brotherhood League series and never got swept in an interleague series against Institute League teams. Sure, they split several (9 of their 16 series), but they also swept seven of those. The only team that has challenged the Boys in 2299 has been #4 Fort Hagen (3-3 season record), splitting all three series with them.

Diamond City (#2) also jumped over Goodneighbor (#3) in the Top 5. This is another case of it seeming BNN moved teams just to have something to do and give us something to write about. The Swatters won 2 of 3 at #24 Roxbury, which in and of itself is not impressive against a struggling team. In the same weekend, the Hancocks took 2 of 3 at home against #10 Quincy. Whatever.

We will feature the Institute League this week, and they have the next three teams in the Power Rankings: #4 Fort Hagen, #5 Lexington, and #6 Starlight. This is the best league in baseball, so we hope that remains for the last eight weeks of the season. Please see Part 2 for our IL feature.

As mentioned above, the Knuckle Punchers now possess the last position in the Power Rankings despite a decent showing against the Swatters. They are just one position behind Sunshine Tidings, who was the only team to get swept over the weekend, losing all three against the Synths. Both teams dropped several spots in the Power Rankings, which again seems like BNN was moving teams just to move them, at least for the Punchers. Easy Town (#20) jumped out of last in the rankings thanks to taking the series at the County Crossing Bloodbugs (#22).

All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Breaking Down the Institute League

The Institute League is THE premier league of the 2299 season. With four of the top nine teams in the Power Rankings--#4 Fort Hagen, #5 Lexington, #6 Starlight, and #9 Abernathy--this league looks to be the most thrilling heading into the final stretch of the season. Sure, Concord (#18) and Sunshine Tidings (#23) are not in the competition, but a four-team race is one to be excited about.

In reality, the Silver Shroud are the class of the league in 2299, with the other three currently fighting for the coveted wildcard spot. If it were not for the success of Nordhagen Beach, the Shroud would easily cruise to the #1 seed in the North Charles Association. As it stands, they are likely to be at least the #2 seed. Fort Hagen is 2nd in runs (357) and runs allowed (251) with the top Starters ERA (3.20) and Defensive Efficiency (.692) in the NCA. Three starters have won 10 games: Mike Cartrette (10-3), Derek Green (10-2), and Matt Hope (10-3). Brent Hooker (8-3) is likely to reach that number, too. Fort Hagen is also enjoying the "Tiller-Miller Thrillers" in Jim Tiller (.350/15/51) and Mark Miller (.386/2/39) as one-two in batting average. Five players in all are hitting over .300, and three players have double-digit home runs. This team is stacked.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1616342937

The Synths are the CBO's hottest team, having won nine straight, including consecutive league sweeps of the two bottom teams, to move them to just a game back of Starlight for the wildcard race. They'll have three consecutive weekend series against the Adamantium with 6 games in Lexington sandwiching 3 games at Abernathy Farms.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1616342937

The Lady Killers have looked to be the team strongest of the three at this point in the season. In their last three league series, Starlight has won two series over the Adamantium and this past weekend over Fort Hagen. They are 8-4 in their last four series since dropping a weekend series to the Shroud four weeks ago. Including midweek games, the Killers last dropped a series to that Shroud team, going 13-5 overall in that time.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1616342937

Abernathy is currently a game behind Starlight, but they are a 2298 playoff team, meaning they will have the drive to stay alive in the league. Like we mentioned before, they get Lexington the next three weekends, so that could be their chance to cool off the Synths and surge past the Killers.

11 July 2299 - Demps, Party Boys Get 7-0 Win

The Sunshine Tidings Chemists went down to defeat to Aaron Demps and his Nordhagen Beach teammates. The final score was 7-0 in favor of the Party Boys. Sunshine Tidings's current losing streak is now 4 games.

Demps's performance can only be described as masterful. He notched 8 strikeouts in 8.2 innings while allowing 6 hits. Demps goes to 3-1 on the year with 39 strikeouts.

"We'll savor this win," Demps told the Nordhagen Beach News, "then get ready for the next game."

11 July 2299 - Minnier Lifts Swatters to 10-5 Win

Nick Minnier helped his team muscle past the University Point Deathclaws, 10-5. In the game, the Diamond City catcher was 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Jason Haynes earned the win for Diamond City. He lasted 5.2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 3. With the win, he raised his record to 2-1. With the victory, the Swatters upped their record to 49-20.

The game turned with one out in the bottom of the fourth when Minnier hit a run-scoring single. It propelled the Swatters into the lead, 2-1.

12 July 2299 - Perfect Game for Cave Crickets' Thurston

So rare that it is more a figment of the imagination than an actual possibility for a professional ballplayer, the near-mythical perfect game became reality for Rob Thurston today.

The Victory Cave Crickets left-hander dominated the Cherry Ghoulrillas at John-Caleb Bradberton Honorary Field, securing the 1-0 Cave Crickets victory and a place for himself in the history books.

"As a kid I imagined pitching a perfect game, but it was only a fairy tale -- I didn't really ever expect to pitch one," Thurston said later, sitting in the clubhouse with a crowd of reporters. "I don't want to demean it, but I've lost games where I had better stuff than I had today. It all just fell into place in this one."

The 21-year-old Thurston retired all 27 Ghoulrillas batters in a row. He surrendered no hits, walked none, struck out 11 and permitted no one to get on base. He also pitched a no-hitter on 21 May against the Grape Painted Ghouls.

So far this season Thurston is 5-1 with a 0.75 ERA in 9 starts. The two-way player is also batting .391 with no home runs, 2 RBIs and 4 runs scored. He has 9 hits in 23 at-bats, 4 walks and a .500 OBP. Thurston has played in 15 games.

Hi, my name is Susan Boggs and I am wicked smart. Today I get to write about le roi soleil, which was the name of the one true king of France, Louis the Great Deiudonne XIV of France, French place, Europe, Eastern Hemisphere, Earth. Some say that he liked to dress like a woman, but actually he just looked that way because he had long hair and wore stockings and probably listened to rock music. Louis XIV was a playboy and had like 25 children with 9 different women. Because he outlived his children--at least the legitimate ones--it was his great grandson, Louis XV, who became king when Louis XIV died in Versailles in 1715. Thank you for reading my short report on the amazing Sun King of France.

14 July 2299 - Finch Farm Trades Deathclaw for Three Prospects

You can focus on the negatives after being traded to a new team -- finding a new place to stay, leaving teammates and friends, having to start anew -- but one player, Chris Deathclaw, hopes to focus on the positives. "It is what it is. It means I'm wanted somewhere, like Nuka-Cola in Nuka-World. At least one team sees potential in me. I mean, I take it one day at a time. Like sands in the hourglass, these are the days of our lives. We just all need to sit back and take what comes."

Those were the comments heard after the Finch Farm Four Leafs came to an agreement to deal 21-year-old RHP Chris Deathclaw to the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets for 22-year-old minor league RHP John Irwin, 22-year-old minor league RHP Kyle Kyleson Jr. and 20-year-old minor league CF Bottlecap Go earlier today. The deal is expected to be formally announced later this evening.

This year Deathclaw has compiled a 5-8 record with a 6.34 ERA.

This season Irwin has made 14 relief appearances and saved 1 game. His record is 1-0 with 25 strikeouts in 32 innings with a 2.25 ERA.

14 July 2299 - Party Boys, Masterson Blast Bloodbugs, 14-2

The first-place Nordhagen Beach Party Boys took on the County Crossing Bloodbugs in front of a spirited crowd.

Masterson went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3 for the Party Boys on the day. Nordhagen Beach pitcher Julian Shed got the win, upping his record to 9-4. Zach DiGrande got the loss.

The game was on the line with two out in the top of the seventh inning, but Sia Abber didn't flinch. With runners on 1st and 2nd and County Crossing trailing 3-2, Abber retired Mike McDonie to end the threat. "Nothing to it," said Abber, with a wink.

The Party Boys have an impressive 51-20 record, tops in the CBO.

3B Jon Hitman also contributed on offense, going 3 for 5 with two doubles, a run, and three RBI.

Paladin Danse hit a 2-run double off Gabe Faulhaber in the bottom of the sixth, which put the Ninjas in front, 7-6. In addition to the double, Danse had 1 single, while going 2 for 5.

"You know, at the end of the day, it's about who scores the most runs," said Egret manager Kip Bomb.

The Ninjas improve their record to 33-38 with the win over FHE.

14 July 2299 - T-51s Win 3-2 Walk-Off in 14

In a low-scoring tilt between the Oberland T-51s and the Diamond City Swatters, Gerald Jerry was the difference-maker. The Oberland right-hander spearheaded the 3-2 win. Oberland reliever Alex Godcomplex picked up the win, upping his record to 2-2. Mike Pond was saddled with the loss. With the win, Oberland pushed its record to 39-32.

The knockout blow came in the bottom of the 14th inning. That's when second baseman Jonathan Abern stepped to the plate with a runner on 1st and hit a walk-off run-scoring double, to win the ballgame.

Abern called the win "a collective effort."

14 July 2299 - Red Rockets Deal Hancocks 1-0 Defeat

The Jamaica Plain Red Rockets did just enough to secure a victory over the Goodneighbor Hancocks, 1-0, at Third Rail Stadium at S. Boston HS. Nobody did more than pitcher Ryan Hartley. Mike Grille converted his 12th save in 13 tries. The Red Rockets improved to 35-36.

Erb made an early impact for Concord when he stroked his 14th home run of the season. The solo home run, which came in the bottom of the third, put the Radstags on top, 2-0.

"Glad to see the fans get into it," said Erb.

Gwinnett Southie (6-8) pitched the Stags to victory, allowing no earned runs on eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Brent Hooker (8-4) gave up three earned runs in the loss.

This so reminds me of a conversation I had with the Professor during Junior Year of undergrad's French Revolution class, albeit it was about how much of a narcissist Louis XV was and not XIV.
