Stan Zielinski Cubs scout
I think it is appropriate to put this in the minor league thread....Stan Zielinski was an outstanding scout who signed plenty of terrific players from Cliff Floyd to Kyle Schwarber. He began his career with the White Sox in 1979 and had been with the Cubs since 2001
The Chicago Cubs midwest area scout was just 64 when he passes this week This last line from the BA article quoting former Cubs GM Jim Hendry really sums up the value of a great scout...this was Hendry said about Zielinski That’s how much I lean on the guy. He’s that good, and I don’t think the country’s ever heard of him.” |

In response to a Lumpkin request, here is a Topps Vault photo of pitcher William Lockhart, who was a non-roster invitee with the Padres in 1971.

Per Lumpkin request.
Pitcher Dick Dare was a non-roster invitee with the 1968 Dodgers and 1969 Padres. The photo is from the York (PA) Gazette and Daily of Aug. 28, 1969. It shows him in the York Pirates' uniform. |
Bill Frost

Pitcher Bill Frost was non-roster invitee with the 1971 Padres. The photo is from the Amarillo (TX) Globe-Times of Aug. 8, 1969. It shows him with the Amarillo Giants. |

Per Lumpkin request.
Pitcher Gil Scharringhausen was a non-roster invitee with the 1969 Padres. The photo is from the Portland State University Library Archives. It was taken while he was a basketball player. |
Richard Zinniger

Per Lumpkin request.
Pitcher Richard Zinniger was a non-roster invitee with the 1970 Padres. The photo is from the Provo (UT) Daily Herald of May 31, 1968. It shows him with the Brigham Young University varsity baseball team. As for the other Lumpkin requests above -- Jim Allen, Ron Drake, Terry Lee Gardner, Salvador Gonzalez, Bob P. O'Brien, and Marvin Thompson -- I had not previously come across any indication that they were non-roster invitees with the Padres or any other team. I'll have to do some newspaper research on them when I get some time to confirm their status, and see if any images are available. |
Ron Drake

Per Lumpkin request.
An article in the San Diego Union of March 1, 1969 confirms that Drake played third base the day before in an exhibition game for the Padres. Drake was a catcher and infielder during his minor league career. The baseball photo of Drake is from the Arizona Republic of June 4, 1970. It shows him with the Salt Lake City Bees. The football photo shows him with Long Beach City College. Ronald Drake Minor Leagues Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com |
Marvin Thompson

This photo is from the San Diego Union of January 14, 1969, right after the Padres signed Thompson following a massive tryout of prospects. The accompanying article said that 18-year-old pitcher Thompson was to report to the Padres' spring training camp in Yuma in February for spring training, but my assumption is that he would arrive in the minor league section of that camp. He was destined for Class A Key West all along. I found no indication that he was a non-roster invitee to the major league camp. Marvin Thompson Minor Leagues Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com Regarding Lumpkin's remaining requests, I don't have photos of them and they don't appear to be non-roster invitees nor spring roster players. 1) I think Jim Allen is Pitcher James Richard Allen, who lived in San Diego, but whose baseball-reference record shows no association with the Padres. 2) Terry Gardner was a minor league pitcher from 1967 through 1970, the last two years coming within the Padres' system. 3) Salvador Gonzalez is not listed in baseball-reference.com. I have no idea who he is. I tried spelling the last name as Gonzales, but that didn't help. 4) Robert P. "Bob" O'Brien was a pitcher and outfielder in the Cubs' system in 1969 and Padres' system in 1970. P.S. I stand corrected. Lumpkin has provided a 1969 Padres spring listing on the major league thread which shows that the above five players were indeed non-roster invitees to the 1969 Padres' spring camp. |
