4 August 2299 - NWL News: The Offseason Begins

With the Nuka World League playoffs settled and a champion crowned, it might appear as though baseball is ready to slink into hibernation until next year. Instead, the offseason begins today, bringing a different flurry of activity. Trades and roster moves will continue over the next several months as teams look for that magic combination that will find them playing for next year's championship.

4 August 2299 - Vault 81 Starting to "Feel" It

The Vault 81 Dwellers have made it their 2299 mission to better Oberland in the race for 2nd place in the Railroad League. Now, some of their players are taking the hype and excitement to up their games.

Dwellers manager Jason Personhood pointed out a few players that he says are making progress as we head into the last month of the season.

"There are four guys I want to point out today for their dedication to hard work," Personhood said. "Me and coaches Art [Clarke], David [Brown], and Murder [Downey] have been watching these guys and enjoying their commitment to building a winning attitude."

Personhood pointed out 7th reliever Danny Haines, backup catcher Ronald Raygun, left fielder Sklyer Pickpocket, and center fielder Aesed Hayjen as showing improvement for the stretch run.

"Our hitters have been working hard to cut down strikes," Personhood said, "and our pitcher has been working a lot on getting more movement on his pitches. If they can show practice results on the field, we might just have a chance. Got to bet up on Diamond City first, though."

The Dwellers travel to Diamond City for a weekend series between the top two teams in the Railroad League. The Swatters lead the season series 5-4 as they meet for the last time this regular season. Vault 81 follows up that series with trips to Goodneighbor and Oberland next week before the Hancocks travel to the Vault.

"This is the toughest 10-game stretch of our season," Personhood said. "This is do or die for our season. We need everybody to step up."

4 August 2299 - Extra-Inning Walk-Off Win for Swatters

Diamond City third baseman Allen Bishop helped his team beat the Vault 81 Dwellers, 8-7, in 13 innings. Bishop, who is tied for 6th in the SCA in triples with 6, went 4 for 6 for the Swatters. The Swatters have an impressive 59-27 record, a 14-game lead over the Dwellers.

The Swatters relied on right fielder Wayne Lacy for the game-winning hit. And, in the bottom of the 13th, he delivered, hitting a run-scoring single to seal the deal.

"We'd like to put some distance between ourselves and the rest of the division," said Bishop.

4 August 2299 - Mart, Party Boys Wallop Witch Hats, 13-2

Nordhagen Beach first baseman Dustin Mart was a significant contributor in his team's 13-2 triumph over the Salem Witch Hats. He was 3 for 5 with 2 home runs, a double, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 for Nordhagen Beach. Chet Arthur, the winning pitcher, improved to 9-3. He pitched 8 innings, giving up 7 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 0. Nordhagen Beach improves to 59-27 with the win. They lead their division by 14 games.

Michael Fogcrawler had a big hit for Nordhagen Beach in the top of the third inning. With Nordhagen Beach leading 2-0, Fogcrawler hit a 3-run home run. It was his 22nd home run of the season and put the Party Boys up, 5-0.

"It's a good day to be a fan after a win like that," Fogcrawler told the Nordhagen Beach News.

4 August 2299 - Yao Guai Fall, 10-6, to Danse, Ninjas

Getting a good performance from left fielder Paladin Danse, the Egret Ninjas defeated the FHE Yao Guai, 10-6. Danse went 3 for 5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 for the Ninjas. Egret is now 42-44, FHE 37-49.

Egret used a timely hit from Dog Prairie to get the win. The third baseman stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Ninjas ahead, 9-6. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it made an impact.

"There's never a lack of effort in our clubhouse. We're willing to do the little things to get the win," Danse told the Egret News.

4 August 2299 - Silver Shroud Bridle Radstags, 4-2

Behind an impressive start by Mike Cartrette, Fort Hagen beat Concord, 4-2. Curtis Thriceshot got the save, his 27th in 30 chances. Fort Hagen raised its record to 56-30 with the win.

In the bottom of the second, Fort Hagen shortstop Well Done Dungan had a productive at-bat. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and two out, Dungan stroked a 2-run single to right. It made the score 2-0, Fort Hagen. For the game, he was 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 walks. He drove in 2 runs.

"Our guys are never satisfied," said Fort Hagen manager Mark Andersen.

Cartrette (15-3) allowed two earned runs on five hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts in just 5.2 innings.

5 August 2299 - Mart Slugs Party Boys to 5-2 Win

A 4-RBI performance from Dustin Mart, who finished 5th in the NCA in runs with 87 last year, helped the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys beat the Salem Witch Hats, 5-2. Julian Shed got the win, improving to 11-5. He worked 6.1 innings, giving up 2 runs on 10 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1. The win for the Party Boys lifted their record to 60-27.

Nordhagen Beach took the lead on Mart's 22nd home run of the season. The 3-run home run, which came against Tony Bertha in the top of the seventh, made the score 5-2, Nordhagen Beach. He hit two home runs for the second straight day versus Salem. He is now tied for second in the NCA with teammate Michael Fogcrawler and Finch Farm's Joe Mahaney.

"Every win gets us closer to our ultimate goal," said Mart.

5 August 2299 - Nut K's 10 En Route to 3-1 Knuckle Punchers Win

The home crowd had a good time watching the Oberland T-51s and Roxbury Knuckle Punchers get after it.

The Roxbury Knuckle Punchers went home winners at Atomatoys Stadium at Roxbury, thanks in large part to starter Beachboy Nut. Nut stifled the Oberland T-51s, enabling Roxbury to grab the 3-1 win. Aaron Somer converted his 16th save in 17 tries.

Nut subdued the Oberland offense. The Roxbury left-hander allowed a mere 2 hits over 8 innings, while fanning 10. His season record goes to 11-11 with the win.

"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said Oberland manager Dirk Steadyhand. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."

The win puts Roxbury at 33-54.

5 August 2299 - Tick Fuels 13-6 Egret Triumph

Currfel Tick made an impact in the 13-6 Egret win over FHE. Tick, who is tied for 5th in the SCA in triples with 7, went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and 2 walks. He scored 4 runs. The winning pitcher was Danny Cautious. He tossed 109 pitches over 6 innings, allowing 6 runs on 11 hits. Egret has now won 3 in a row.

Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Tony Tamez? The Egret catcher had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to put the Ninjas on top, 2-1. For the game, Tamez had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Tamez. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."

5 August 2299 - Victory Pushes Silver Shroud Record to 57-30

Fort Hagen Silver Shroud starter Derek Green pitched a strong game against the Concord Radstags at Hubris Comics Park, leading the Silver Shroud to victory, 6-3. Green picked up the win for Fort Hagen, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 7 hits. He now sports a record of 12-4. The win gives Fort Hagen a season record of 57-30.

The Silver Shroud got a big hit from left fielder Andrew Nuka. In the bottom of the fifth, Nuka pounded a 3-run home run to left-center. His 20th home run of the season put the Silver Shroud ahead, 6-2.

Green told a Fort Hagen Gazette reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.

5 August 2299 - Swatters Prevail, 7-5, over Vault 81

The first-place Diamond City Swatters took on the Vault 81 Dwellers in front of a spirited crowd.

In the 7-5 Diamond City win over Vault 81, the impact of Wally Warwick was substantial. Warwick, who is on pace for 68 RBI this season, went 2 for 3 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Diamond City has an impressive 60-27 record.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Swatters grabbed the lead when Warwick hit his 11th home run of the season. The 2-run home run off Tom Sweeney made it 6-4, Diamond City.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Warwick told the Diamond City News.

5 August 2299 - Red Rockets Bridle Hancocks, 4-2

The brother from an electric mother is having a great season, definitely his best since his CBO MVP 2296 season. He and 2298 MVP, Bryan Assman, look to be 1-2 in some order in the MVP race this season, too.

Yeah I'm definitely noticing him again lately, after a period there where he seemed all but forgotten, but maybe it was just a combo of what got reported on (there's so much, everything can't be caught) and unconscious selective amnesia on my part.

6 August 2299 - Vault 81 Trades Laboe for Grape's Johnson

The Vault 81 Dwellers have made a deal sending 25-year-old minor league 2B Brenton Laboe to the Grape Painted Ghouls for 21-year-old C Steve Johnson and 24-year-old RF Caleb Sometimes Smith. Both sides are said to be pleased with the way the trade worked out.

6 August 2299 - Hancocks Burst Rockets, 14-6

The Goodneighbor Hancocks came with their bats cocked. With five players with multiple hits and 20 hits in all, the Hancocks had no problem in handling the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets, 14-6, at Red Rockets Stadium.

Goodneighbor shortstop Burtie Cuttooth could do no wrong in today's win over the Red Rockets as he collected 5 hits, including tying an SCA record with three doubles.

"Things were in his favor in every one of his at-bats," Red Rockets skipper Mark Sellsword said to the press corps after the game. "He got hitters' counts."

Cuttooth agreed, saying that getting ahead early in the counts was "the key" to his game.

"Once you get ahead, it makes it a lot easier because you get a better pitch to hit," he said. "You know the pitcher has to come in with it. And you're ready."

Burtie Cuttooth doubled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, flied out in the 5th, hit an RBI double in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th. So far this year in 88 games Cuttooth is hitting .331 with 14 home runs, 68 RBIs and 52 runs scored.

Even with Cuttooth's masterful game, he was not the Game MVP. That went to his teammate, Bryan Assman. Assman was 4 for 5 with two doubles, a home run, a walk, three runs, and four RBI.

Good Don Duck, Jumper Hayes, and Zachary Utsinger all added multiple hits.

6 August 2299 - Tick Helps Egret Outscore FHE

The Egret Ninjas grabbed a win, 14-11, over the FHE Yao Guai at BosCom Circle. Egret shortstop Currfel Tick went 4 for 6 with 3 doubles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 6. Egret reliever Elijah Huge got the win, raising his record to 3-0. Gabe Faulhaber was tagged with the loss. Andy Helium got the save, his 23rd in 28 chances.

Tick had a clutch at-bat in the top of the seventh for the Ninjas. Coming up with the bases loaded and Egret trailing 9-8, he hit a 2-run single.

"It was a solid team effort," said Tick after the game.

The Yao Guai's Nick Waterpipe also was hot in his team's loss. Waterpipe was 4 for 4 with two doubles, two walks, three runs, and two RBI.

The 4th-place Ninjas have won 4 consecutive games, including the weekend sweep at FHE.

6 August 2299 - Party Boys Come Up Short at Salem, 6-5

The Salem Witch Hats defeated the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, 6-5, in North Charles Association action at Vim! Park of Salem. Salem pitcher Terrence Artman had a standout performance. Artman got the win, improving to 14-5. He allowed 7 hits and walked 2 over 8 innings. Artman allowed 2 runs. Salem raised its record to 46-42 with the win.

The Witch Hats got a big hit from catcher Mike Laughingman. In the bottom of the sixth, Laughingman pounded a solo home run to right. His 7th home run of the season put the Witch Hats ahead, 6-1.

"You know, at the end of the day, it's about who scores the most runs," said Salem manager Proper Lighthouse.

6 August 2299 - Silver Shroud Stay Hot with Extra-Inning Win

The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud walked off with a big win.

The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud defeated the Concord Radstags, 6-4, in 12 innings. Doing his part was left fielder Andrew Nuka, who went 3-5 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Bill Early, now 1-1, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 1 and walking 0.

The game came to a dramatic end. In the bottom of the 12th, with Fort Hagen trailing 4-3, Nuka hit a fastball from Emperry Alizm for a 3-run home run, giving the Silver Shroud the walk-off win.

"It's not about individual awards," Nuka told a Fort Hagen Gazette reporter after the game. "It's about winning championships. That's what we play for."

The Silver Shroud lead the North Charles Association Institute League by 7½ games.

Jim Tiller's bat has been smoking lately, and it continued today as he went 1-for-5 in a 6-4 Fort Hagen Silver Shroud triumph over the Concord Radstags at Hubris Comics Park. The 21-year-old first baseman has now hit safely in 20 consecutive games for the Silver Shroud.

Jim Tiller grounded out in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Mario Bustos in the 6th, grounded out in the 8th and flied out in the 10th.

Presently Tiller is batting .359 with 132 hits and 19 home runs. He has knocked in 67 runs and scored 65 times.

6 August 2299 - Swatters Drop Contest, 7-0, to Vault 81

Vault 81 left-hander Edwin Mass pitched his team to victory over the Diamond City Swatters at The Great Green Jewel. The final score was 7-0. With the win, Vault 81 pushed its record to 46-42.

Deer Quickwalker, who is a two-time All-Star and former MVP, chipped in for Vault 81 with a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth. For the game, the right fielder had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 runs batted in.

"It's easier to pitch when you get run support," said Mass.

The Dwellers, who are fighting to keep up with 2nd-place Oberland, recorded four home runs as a team in the game.

His numbers were not terrible, but he most certainly was nowhere near as dominant in 2297 and 2298. This season, he may end up with an even better season than 2296 (currently slightly behind in adjusted numbers).

7 August 2299 - CBO News: Draft Pool Revealed

The 2299 amateur draft pool was published today with barely a mention on BNN. But then, fans rarely get drawn into amateur drafts. The players are not known commodities and they're not tangible recognizable names. They might be five years down the road, but casual fans don't get sucked in by "might be," they get excited about what is happening in the here and now. Over the next 30 days, scouts will assess their possibilities, run mock drafts and formulate their plans.

To help them, Commonwealth Baseball Organization has posted an interactive draft section on its Transactions page, which will be available for 90 days before draft day.

The early favorites to be high picks are the following:
1. RHP Nuke Laloosh
2. 2B Rabbit Forest
3. RF Delmarva Illeracula
4. CF Sharkey Lurkfodder
5. SS Rick Rolled
6. 1B Jackie Shepherd
7. SS Pipe Wallcrawler
8. CF Science Brennan
9. 1B Silvam Fourteen
10. 1B Duncan MacCready

Analysis

While the Bottom 5 remained exactly the same, there is a new #1 in this week's Power Rankings.

Though they are still #4 in the standings for league leaders, the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud used a 5-0 week to boost themselves to #1 in the CBO's BNN Power Rankings. The Shroud didn't quite face the NCA's toughest foes, popping Easy Town (#23) in two and Concord (#19) in the weekend three. It most certainly helps to have the likely Vim! Pitcher Award winner in Mike Cartrette (15-3, 2.02), who may be on his way to a historical season. If he were not the favorite for the Vim!, Starters 2-4, Derek Green (12-4, 3.20), Brent Hooker (11-4, 3.95), and Matt Hope (11-4, 3.87), would be in consideration. Fort Hagen's four starters rank 1st, tied for 3rd, and tied for 6th in the NCA in wins.

Diamond City, Goodneighbor, Nordhagen Beach, and Quincy make up the rest of the Top 5, with all teams remaining in the Top 5, but three of them jostled around. The Swatters were 3-2, while both Goodneighbor and the Boys were 2-3. Quincy was 4-1, but they are not quite close enough to jump any team in the Top 4.

Despite their down week, the Boys now have a Magic # of 7 thanks to their 2-1 series victory of the Salem Witch Hats (#11-T), which puts both the Hats and The Slog (#8) tied for 2nd place in the Brotherhood League, making an interesting race for the playoffs, but still virtually guaranteeing Nordhagen Beach the League pennant.

I know I've been talking up the Swatters (and it's good they're #2!) but haven't praised the Silver Shroud enough lately too, so very pleased with these power rankings.

They are currently the hottest team in the CBO and the only team to go 5-0 last week, so it is much deserved. If they keep it up, they could be the #1 seed, too. Their league is tough, though, from 1-4.
