Jason Baker - First Guy?

1 Attachment(s)
Jason Baker was a pitcher on the Montreal Expos' spring roster in 1997 and 1998. He was also a non-roster invitee with the Atlanta Braves in 2000. He bears some resemblance to the first guy among the unidentified Braves above, although I'm not absolutely sure it is he.

FWIW, if you blow up "First Guy" a little, he has "Daniels" written on his glove. That said, the only "Daniels" I can find who played in the Braves system within the general time frame is Lee Daniels, and Lee Daniels was African-American. I mean, I know I suck at this, but I don't suck enough to confuse "First Guy" with an African-American. So maybe it was a glove borrowed from Lee Daniels. But "Daniels" is written on the glove in any case. "Last Guy" has something written on his batting glove, but I can't make it out.

Zooming the "last guy's" batting Glove gave me Raymond N or H, and it turns out he is Raymond (or Ramon) Nunez, Braves prospect from 1992-96. He then went on to play two years in the Cubs chain, then four years in Mexico. This also gives us a better target on some of the others. THANKS

Cusick 04-16-2017 07:36 PM

Post removed as irrelevant. Rainmaker's identification of Nunez above trumped it.

Guy No. 4 is ... Jeff Bock!

1 Attachment(s)
Locked down that Guy Number 4 is Jeff Bock, based on the 1996 Greenville card (which is NOT illustrated in the trading card database). If you look closely, you can even see his little necklace!

Second Guy: John Dettmer

2 Attachment(s)
Turns out the second guy isn't a minor leaguer at all -- 1994-95 Texas Ranger John Dettmer, who was in Braves camp in 1996 and a member of both the Greenville and RIchmond rosters.
Dettmer was notable in how his pro career starter. In the lower minors in 1992-93, he was a stunning 26-4 over 42 starts with a 2.10 ERA. But his major league debut was a major disaster (0-6 in 11 games, nine starts).

Angels in the Vault

5 Attachment(s)
The above image of Charlie Phillips required some time to ID this week, an Angels minor leaguer, and Anaheim guys have been turning up on a regular basis in the Vault. They seem to have one thing in common: none of the made it to the major leagues or onto a Topps card.

Phillips appeared once before, GV466-468. But it seems like an inordinate amount of them have shown up. Since this minor league thread carries little traffic these days, we'll try to present a comprehensive list of Angels minor league pitchers for the next time ID's are problematic.

In alphabetical order:
Ken Angulo: LHP with Angels 1983-85 (GQ872-873, KD961-962)
Attachment 502846
Jose Calderon: LHP with Angels 1983 (GY 895-896, HS 814-815)

Angels in the Vault - Frank Kenyon

1 Attachment(s)
My thanks go to Rainmaker for posting all the photos above of Angels career minor leaguers who have appeared, or may appear, in the Topps vault.

This photo is of the one player he mentioned for whom he lacked a photo. The image is from the El Paso (TX) Herald-Post of April 16, 1974. It shows Frank Kenyon in the uniform of the El Paso Diablos.

Alan Carmichael

1 Attachment(s)
A prep star from Chattanooga, Alan Carmichael was an 11th-round pick of the Mets in 1982 and hung around their system for six seasons without ever breaking through. Photo is by Steve Moore, aka unclemaxie, who marveled at its existence. He was pretty sure this was taken during an instructional league visit.
His minor league cards have him pictured him with Lynchburg .

Dewey Forry

1 Attachment(s)
Pitcher Dewey Forry was on the Los Angeles Dodgers spring roster in 1977. He died recently -- I think earlier this month.

After his playing career ended, he became president of the D. J. Forry Company, which specializes in growing fruit for the wholesale market in California.

His photo comes from the 1975 TCMA Waterbury Dodgers card on which he appears.
