Zack's father, Zack Rogers, Jr., was mayor of the ballplayer's home town of Butler, Alabama, during the 1960's and 1970's. There is a park named Zack Rogers Park dedicated in his honor in that city. |

Dicky Dost (1947 - 2017)
1 Attachment(s)
Richard "Dicky" Dost passed away on August 5, 2017 following a short battle with brain cancer. The Virginia native, a 6' 3" righthander, was All-State in both baseball and football at James Madison High School (and was inducted into that school's Hall of Fame in 1997). The Mets drafted Dicky in the 5th round of the infamous 1966 draft--the draft in which they made Steve Chilcott the #1 overall pick. Dost pitched for just two seasons in the low minors, including a brief stay with the Durham Bulls (then a Mets Single-A affiliate), before leaving the game and going into the lumber business where he was quite successful. He actually pitched very little--just 10 games over the two years. He did well for Rookie level Marion in 1966, going 1-0 with an ERA of 0.50 across 5 games (3 starts). He pitched less (and less well) in 1967. He finished his career 1-1 with an overall ERA of 2.40. Though I could find no accounts explaining his quick exit from the game, the pattern is certainly consistent with arm trouble.
The image of Dicky accompanied his obituary and is likely his high school portrait. |

Here's a photo of Larry Novak which is a little clearer than the one posted above. This accompanied his obituary in August of 2010. It shows him with the Miami Marlins in either 1956 or 1957.
Larry Novak was on the Philadelphia Phillies' spring roster in 1955. Two other players from the above postings by Penale were Phillies' spring roster players. Dick Carter appeared in the Phils' roster in 1944. Spencer "Red" Robbins was on the Phils' roster in 1955. Carter was also a major league coach with the Phils for the 1959 and 1960 seasons. |
