Analysis

While Goodneighbor enters the playoffs as both the #1 seed and the defending champions, they have to also realize two things: they were almost knocked out of the playoffs last season by Diamond City (the Hancocks prevailed 3-2 in 12 innings in the deciding game) and the Swatters won this season's series. Had Diamond City not had a late-season stumble, they would be hosting the first two games of this series and the last two if they were to go that far.

Now, Goodneighbor had the advantage of facing a team in Vault 81 in the Association Semifinals that was not quite playoff ready. That made the series easy for the Hancocks as they cruised to a 3-0 series win. The offense hit and the pitching did enough in winning the three games 9-8, 9-2, and 8-4.

In the Association Semifinals, the Swatters had a tougher opponent in Quincy and had to fight hard in the first three games, losing 8-5, winning 3-1, and losing 4-1. Then the pitching and bats all came together in an 8-1 win and then the series clincher, 12-4. It's a quick turnaround for DC to travel to South Boston, but they have a tough team.

Keys to victory for Goodneighbor
  • Offensive power - Diamond City has good pitching, but the Hancocks have the most powerful bats in baseball.
  • Limit runs allowed - Goodneighbor is already number one in runs allowed in the SCA. They need to keep it that way.
  • Depend on Assman - He dominates, the Hancocks win games.

Keys to victory for Diamond City
  • Use the best pitching staff in the SCA to shut down Goodneighbor's power - Diamond City has the SCA-best 3.69 ERA among starters and 2nd-best 3.36 ERA among the bullpen.
  • Keep the power game going - Depend on the Trip-Paws, Wayne Lacy, Oren Gep, and Tyler Ross to keep hitting bombs, especially when they play in the short right-field line at The Great Green Jewel.
  • Be perfect on defense - With the second-best defensive efficiency, it is imperative that Diamond City limit the Hancock's chances. They need to play solid defense in every game.

Prediction

Something about this season has been pointing at the Swatters throughout, with a strong start and strong finish to the season, despite missing out on the 1-seed. Still, we like Diamond City to take the South Charles Association by a count of 4 games to 2.

Game 1 Matchup

Analysis

A year ago when these two teams met, Nordhagen Beach entered as the heavy favorites. Instead, they left the series swept and wondering. They were determined to perform better this season, but little did they know that Fort Hagen would still be around. These two teams were like pugilists giving and taking blows for 20 glorious, bloody rounds. Neither team was able to take any of their four series during the season, and we suspect that this 7-game series will work similarly.

The Party Boys were able to cruise through Brotherhood League rivals, the The Slog Ghouls, in a three-game sweep. The Boys from the Beach scored and scored some more in winning their games 10-3, 9-3, and 9-6.

The Silver Shroud struggled a bit with their Institute League opponents in the Starlight Lady Killers. Down 2-0 in the Association Semifinals after dropping games 7-2 and 3-1, they looked to be cooked. Instead, they rallied back, winning two at Starlight, 6-1 and 12-7, before taking Game 5 at home, 7-2.

Keys to Victory for Nordhagen Beach
  • Power triple threat - The home run factory that is Michael Fogcrawler, Jonathan Angelou, and Dustin Mart produces a lot of runs. Keep blasting deep balls and they should be able to score a lot again.
  • Ride the Beach wave - Leading a good starting rotation of Tommy Beach, Chet Arthur, and Julian Shed, Beach is the one emerging as not just a hometown star, but a CBO one. As the ace, he had a few tough games regarding run support, but he is the person the Boys will depend on to beat Fort Hagen's Mike Cartrette.
  • Steady the Pen - The Nordhagen Beach bullpen seems to be up and down. This season, they have been mostly up and even grabbed Tom Mannequin from University Point to short up the bullpen more. Should their bullpen hold on to late leads, every game could potentially be for the Boys.

Keys to Victory for Fort Hagen
  • Pitch around the stars - With the best rotation in the North Charles Association, the three-man plan of Cartrette, Derek Green, and Brent Hooker just needs to hold down the three stars of Nordhagen Beach. Do that, and they can hold NB to under four runs a game on average.
  • Use their own power - The Shroud need to also depend on their three big bombers in Andrew Nuka, Jim Tiller, and David Driftwood to knock in extra runs in key situations.
  • Hit away - Leading the NCA in batting average, the Shroud just need to do what they do best: hit the **** ball! Well Done Dungan, Tiller, and Mark Miller need to keep their average up throughout the series.

Prediction

We have no idea which team to lean towards. Nordhagen Beach had that late perfect game by Tommy Beach, which seemed to boost the Party Boys' morale, spurring them on their current seven-game winning streak. We think the Silver Shroud will bite, claw, and lick their way into a tight race, but we're going to pick the Party Boys to party their way to the Sole Survivor Series with a 4-3 series advantage over Fort Hagen.

Box Score and Story

Association Championship Goes the Distance, Mystic Pines Prevails
Mystic Pines Raybathers won a nail-biting series against the Breakheart Banks Behemoths 2-1, wrapping up the Association Championship finale 2-0 at Mahkra Fishpacking Stadium.

Raybathers second baseman David Braun was named the series MVP.

He batted .538, drove in 3 runs and scored 5 to lead Mystic Pines into the next round of play.

"David was real solid for us, real solid," said Raybathers manager Justin Chops. "I normally say I'd like to have nine of him out there, but thankfully we got by with just one this time."

The Mystic Pines Raybathers will play against the Trinity Plaza Snipers in the next round. Trinity Plaza won their series against the Eastlake Aquaboys 2 games to 0. The Boston Minor Series schedule will be announced after the Association Championship finishes.

It looks like a close series vs The Shroud - but, then again, it looked like it might be close last year, and look what happened then! You mentioned Beach's perfect game and that did provide impetus and get them back on track. Hopefully that, plus some good hitting from the "big three" you mentioned, will see them through this time.

OrangeP47 04-29-2021 08:26 AM

It always comes down to The Boys vs The Shroud doesn't it... it's like the drama is drawing us together

May the best team win.....No, wait, I don't really mean that - May the Boys win!! :D

After a busy week that kept me from doing any simulating of the mighty CBO, it's put up or shut up time for the Boys and Shroud. But first . . .

One-run, low-scoring games. This is an offense's league that the pitchers dominate in the postseason, it seems (like Sheng Kawolski in 2297).

Boston Minor Series - Game 1

Box Score and Story

Bean, Mystic Pines Start Boston Minor Series Strong with Home Win

The Mystic Pines Raybathers started the Boston Minor Series in style today, downing the visiting Trinity Plaza Snipers at Wattz Park by a score of 4-2 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series. Raybathers center fielder Bill Bean was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mystic Pines shortstop Reverend Wilson had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and one out, Wilson stroked a 2-run single to center. It made the score 3-2, Mystic Pines. For the game, he went 1 for 3 with a walk. He drove in 2 runs.

"Things broke our way today and that's great," Raybathers manager Justin Chops said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."

Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Wattz Park. Slated to start are Stick Johnson for the Trinity Plaza Snipers and Justin Sphinx for the the Mystic Pines Raybathers.
