Mets Baseball: Killing Brain Cells since 1962!

At least I have faith in Buck to be able to sort through the rubble to field the best squad he can, more than the prior clowns with help from Fred and Jeff refusing to find replacements or forcing broken guys to play until they were ruined.

My teams right now are interesting.

Mets are in the "rings or bawl" tier of MLB.com's pre-season "where they're at!?", but the actual mood around the team seems rather dismal and I see a meh April and a dire summer coming...

Meanwhile the Raccoons had nothing but doom predicted for '53, were under .500 at the end of May, and three months later are threatening about running away with the stupid division

Despite what this says, I am sure Mets glory (and folly) will be visible from outer space!

Jiminy-effing-eff.

Thank LORDE I'm done. (Yes, you, Ella Yelich-O'Connor. We atheists have slim pickings for oaths, I'm aware.)

That's…grotesque.

When Ellis Valentine played for the Mets, Bill James made reference to the old Richard Pryor joke, "Cocaine is [the Universe's] way of letting you know you have too much money."

Dear Uncle Stevie: that's the Universe talking in Left Field. Just hope it doesn't fall and kill somebody.

I mean, seriously.

I personally prefer to pray to the GOD OF SKINNY PUNKS THAT THIS WIND DOES NOT PICK UP BECAUSE ILL COME OVER THERE AND JAM AN OAR UP YOUR ASS

Westheim 03-25-2023 03:42 AM

If that thing falls, it won't kill *somebody*.

It's gonna be a 5.5 earthquake.

Unrelated, still having an internal debate on whether to do a daily Mets run in OOTP 24 like I last did in the 'rona season.

BBGiovanni 03-27-2023 12:18 PM

might be a good name for his band, if he starts one

but the Darin Ruf Experiment is no more. It's pretty terrible to decide based on 74 AB, so it's entirely possible he'll go somewhere else (return to PHI?) and do well. But if they're going to roll AGAIN with a 4 man bench they just can't roster multiple DHs. I guess Pham and Locastro isn't the most inspirational OF bench in the world, but it's better than Ruf and anyone.

Westheim 03-27-2023 01:17 PM

I love that Uncle Steve tells his people to make "the baseball decision". The previous croo- (cough) owners would have had him rot on the roster all year, batting .172 with two homers, unless a dim-witted minion somehow broke his leg in the weight room, then would have picked up the option for 2024, because you can never have too much veteran savvy(tm)!

I love Uncle Steve.

Amazin69 03-28-2023 01:55 AM

Of course, it was this same Uncle Stevie who let Eppler give away the store to bring Ruf-Bad-Dog east in the first place.

Yes, JD Davis (remember him?) was off to a slow start in 2022, in part because he wasn't used to being primarily a DH. And because he'd finished 2021 in a relative tail-spin, after missing from May 1 until the ASG with an injury.

But, OTOH, JD is 6 years younger, a better and more versatile defender, hit like a demon in 2019 and was even hotter in April of 2021. (1.109 OPS when he was hurt.) Even last year, he was doing better than Ruf before the trade (-0.2 WAR to Ruf's -0.6) and then he was much better than the Bad Dog after the swap. (JD, 0.9 WAR; Ruf -1.0)

On top of that, Eppler also threw away three pitchers, one of whom was not only a very effective LHP at Brooklyn, but is also named "Nick Zwack" and to turn loose of a handle like that is just whack, Jack.

So big deal that management corrected their screw-up after the fact. We eventually got around to releasing Yankee Hero Robinson Cano, too. The idea is not to make stupid mistakes in the first place. JMO.

(If I hadn't given up on the game already, I'd be tempted to return to the ways of my ancestors and start supporting the Giants. [My family were NY Giants fans before Stoneham got suckered into San Francisco.] Wilmer, JD, and Conforto on the field, Kruke and Kuipe in the booth? I've spent worse evenings.)

Justin Verlander likes Port St. Lucie maybe

strained teres major, never heard of it but then again I remember when Syndergaard went on the DL with foot and mouth disease.

We have Scherzer and Senga

I have one more.

Scherzer and Carrasco

Gary Cohen: "The Mets begin the season with the highest payroll in the history of the sport!"

There's many ways to go down from there.

Many, many, many ways down from there.

Gary, subtly forecasting a sell-off at the deadline? Hmm.

(I actually think the team is good enough that Eppler will be able to delude himself that they're still in contention even if they're dead in the water, but cynicism is an easy fix.)

Mets 5, Fish 3 - F

41-13 since '70 on Opening Day!

From tomorrow, we're fair game then.

Is that true? That's a .759 winning percentage!

Yes! :D

Also true: the Mets won a World Series (1969) before they ever won an Opening Day game (going 0-8 from 1962 to 1969), and despite that scrubbing down their total OD record to 41-21, it's still the best in the league.

The Mets be strange folk. :@@:

Westheim 03-31-2023 10:37 AM

See, the thing is that we're mostly playing .450 from Day 2 onwards.

Boomcoach 03-31-2023 11:01 AM

Two of my favorite Mets stats are from their first season.

After 10 games they were 10 1/2 games out of first.

They lost a half a game in the standings after the season was over.
