Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 11 October 2299 NCA Best Fielders for 2299 Selected A great defense can often be the difference between winning and losing, and this year's winners of the North Charles Association Corvega Top Defenders Award provided great defense all year long. The 2299 winners are: Pitcher Joe Penaltybox (Abernathy Adamantium) Catcher Biter Trout (County Crossing Bloodbugs) First Baseman Steve Settler (Abernathy Adamantium) Second Baseman Brian Masterson (Nordhagen Beach Party Boys) Third Baseman Justin Daros (Lexington Synths) Shortstop Nick Maris (Starlight Lady Killers) Left Fielder Jesus Church (Starlight Lady Killers) Center Fielder Millioncap Go (The Slog Ghouls) Right Fielder Donny Kowalski (Abernathy Adamantium) SCA Best Gloves of 2299 Chosen What does it take to win a Corvega Top Defenders Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the South Charles Association consists of: Pitcher John Oldsink (Goodneighbor Hancocks) Catcher Paul Tracy (University Point Deathclaws) First Baseman Jason Robinson (Vault 81 Dwellers) Second Baseman Jumper Hayes (Goodneighbor Hancocks) Third Baseman Notorious Fugate (Jamaica Plain Red Rockets) Shortstop Hose Wallcrawler (FHE Yao Guai) Left Fielder Tyler Ross (Diamond City Swatters) Center Fielder B.J. Perez (Oberland T-51s) Right Fielder Good Don Duck (Goodneighbor Hancocks) Quincy Gunners Ship Talleyrand to Diamond City It has been in the rumor mill for several weeks, but today team officials for Quincy and Diamond City confirmed an agreement. The Gunners dealt 29-year-old RHP Martin Talleyrand to the Swatters for 20-year-old minor league C Jermaine Dent and 20-year-old minor league SS Max Jones. For his career Talleyrand has put together a won-lost record of 1-0. In 53.1 innings he has produced 33 strikeouts and a 5.23 ERA with 1 save. |

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1586093507 Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 12 October 2299 Beantown Wins Award for NCA Dominance Dan Beantown was a calming influence out of the Salem Witch Hats bullpen this season. His teammates and manager said he had a poised demeanor about him that was typical of someone much older and more experienced. His poise has paid off, as the 20-year-old turned in a sparkling season and has been named the winner of the North Charles Association Fallon's Reliever Award for 2299. The Boston, Massachusetts native won the award with 31 saves in 48 relief appearances, 100 strikeouts in 56.1 innings and a record of 3-2 to go with his 1.60 ERA. He received 12 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Steve Warwar of the Finch Farm Four Leafs finished second in voting, while Doug Dee El of the Lexington Synths finished third. Player - Team - First Place - Total Points Dan Beantown - Salem Witch Hats - 12 - 60 Steve Warwar - Finch Farm Four Leafs - 0 - 36 Doug Dee El - Lexington Synths - 0 - 12 Samm Grabs SCA Fallon's Reliever Award The manager of the Diamond City Swatters said he always had confidence handing the ball to Josh Samm out of the bullpen. The 28-year-old was a dominant performer all year for Diamond City and his efforts have been rewarded with the South Charles Association Fallon's Reliever Award for 2299. The bullpen ace had an impressive 1.12 ERA this season, with 37 saves in 58 relief appearances. He fanned 88 batters in 64.1 innings and sported a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. He received 12 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Marc Pondsip of the University Point Deathclaws finished second in voting, while Andy Helium of the Egret Ninjas finished third. Player - Team - First Place - Total Points Josh Samm - Diamond City Swatters - 12 - 60 Marc Pondsip - University Point Deathclaws - 0 - 36 Andy Helium - Egret Ninjas - 0 - 12 Oberland Rebuilding? Rumors around the CBO is that the Oberland T-51s are offering up their aging roster for prospects. That has not turned out to be the truth so far, as they have only made one offseason trade, sending 34-year-old Brian Dingo to Sunshine Tidings in exchange for 19-year-old pitcher Neil Persian on October 4th. While that is their only trade so far, league rumors have been swirling that the T-51s could have upwards of 5-10 trades of their roster in the next coming weeks. Some teams that could be viable trading partners include the clear-cut Top 8 systems in the CBO: Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Egret, Sunshine Tidings, Finch Farm, Vault 81, Atom, and Easy Town. There could be other trade partners, but many teams in the Top 1/3 of the BMU system are also aching to win at the CBO level. Those same anonymous reports are saying that Oberland has very few of its players on its untouchable list, which probably includes most of its better players under 25. Those over 25 are for sale. None of the T-51s' starting pitchers are under 25, with the youngest being staff ace Sheng Kawolski at 27. Kawolski is also the team's youngest pitcher outside close Aaron Still (21). The pitching staff saw a significant dropoff in production from 2298 to 2299, and GM Y4-25 Godlike would probably like to avoid becoming the worst pitching staff in baseball. By BNN's scouting reports, they are still considered 8th-best (7 rankings lower than 2298) for starting pitchers and 15th-best for relievers, but those numbers would be expected to drop before the start of the 2300 season. Said one league scout: "Yeah, we saw the flip come right before our eyes. From the best in the CBO for three years to mediocre. They're going to have to blow it up to make a comeback. I don't see that happening in 2300, though." Oberland will be opening up its new ballpark in 2300. While the team would like to be competitive as it will finally play south of the Charles River, it is realistic to start considering breaking up the CBO's oldest team. |
You know, while I think traditional uniforms have their places, I always like the more colorful ones too, and those new ones for the Deathclaws really hit a soft spot for me, definitely one of the best designs to come out of this project!

I believe I remember declaring someone was not a rookie because he had previous CBO service time. That may have been pre-merger; therefore, he WAS a rookie and thus the most deserving winner of this award. The other winner, well, there was no doubt he was a rookie and a damn good one for the 2299 champions.

Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski Andersen Selected Manager of the Year in NCA Just about any objective fan of the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud would have to admit that Mark Andersen is worthy of the North Charles Association Manager of the Year Award. But it wasn't that way at first. "In the beginning it was rocky," noted Andersen, "The fans really gave it to me. Somewhere along the line we just began putting things together, picking up a win here and there, and morphing into a team--not just a bunch of guys doing their own thing." Andersen paced the Silver Shroud to a first place finish in the North Charles Association Institute League. Fort Hagen wound up the season with a 69-39 record. As for next year, Andersen said, "We're always tweaking things, trying to improve the club. You don't rest after winning awards. I'm here to make the Silver Shroud a perennial powerhouse." Bachelor Takes Top SCA Manager Honors The Diamond City Swatters coaching staff broke out the bubbly when Manager Bucky Bachelor was announced as 2299 South Charles Association Manager of the Year. He skippered the Swatters to a 73-35 record this year and a first place finish in the South Charles Association Railroad League. To a man, they all agreed that their boss was most deserving of the award. All had glowing words to say about this year's winning manager. "He just has a way with people. Coaches and players alike love him." Starlight's Six Pack Disciplined Starlight Lady Killers reliever Ricky Six Pack was disciplined by the team after an incident at the Gray Screen Cafe in Starlight Drive-In. While dining atop the screen at the popular cafe, Six Pack disagreed with a waitress about the price of his bill. Instead of paying the amount asked, Six Pack tossed plates and cups over the edge, crashing down 45 feet below. Made aware of the incident, the Ladykillers team agreed to Six Pack being banned and announced Six Pack would miss the first two regular season games of the 2300 season. According to a release from the team, "We are disappointed in Mr. Six Pack's actions. We expect members of the Lady Killers to treat other residents of the settlement with respect and kindness. There are other ways to settle disputes than throwing tantrums." |

I thought I had made myself one of several voters, but I am now realizing I must have changed it. That's OK. Nate Howard as the chooser of award winners is fine with me. I can make a few different picks than the AI may make, like the Vim! Pitcher Award in the SCA. I don't know if the AI would have chosen Pageturner, but Pageturner HAD to be the winner after an overall season of 21-3, including 14-1 with Goodneighbor.
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1586093507 Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 16 October 2299 Fort Hagen Pitcher Racks Up Vim! Pitcher Award The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Mike Cartrette, this year's North Charles Association Vim! Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Cartrette compiled a 15-4 record in 28 starts, tallied 212 strikeouts in 176 innings and recorded a 2.51 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .202 batting average against him. He received 1 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Terrence Artman of the Salem Witch Hats finished second in voting, while Steve Rocky of the Starlight Lady Killers finished third. Pitcher Award winner is Matt Pageturner of the Goodneighbor Hancocks. He started 28 games and compiled a 21-3 record with an ERA of 3.80 in 208.1 innings with 136 strikeouts. He received 1 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Manny McDuff of the Quincy Gunners finished second in voting, while Tim Fusion of the Diamond City Swatters finished third. In the deal Oberland got 22-year-old minor league RHP Eric Sleeping, 21-year-old minor league LF Z-Boy Oliveras and a 5th round draft pick from Abernathy and dealt 33-year-old RHP Gerald Jerry to the Adamantium. The general managers that made the swap are happy and the players are happy, too. One of the GMs commented, "This was a good swap for all concerned." In his career stats, Jerry has a record of 39 wins and 33 losses and a 4.48 ERA. He has struck out 428 in 602.1 innings. His best season was in 2297 when he went 11-3 with a Railroad League-leading 3.27 ERA to earn him the 2297 RL Desdemona SP Award. In 2299, he was 5-11 with a 4.65 ERA in 23 starts. Easy Town Signs PC Milk Bottle Dickson The Easy Town Assaultrons have gone to the Boston Youth Development League well to sign its pitching coach in former Concord-Lexington Minuteboys skipper Milk Bottle Dickson. While Dickson has not been successful as the top guy in the BYDL (23-27 in 2299), he has helped one of the newer squads in the BYDL develop its pitching, including two expected draft picks in the 2299 Rookie Draft, SP Austen Austin and SP Bendy Barman. Austin could go as high as the 1st round, while Barman is expected around the late-2nd to early-3rd rounds. |

Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 17 October 2299 North Charles Association Top Player Is Violet The future looks extremely bright for Zeldolph Violet. At the age of 22, many players are still trying to find their way in Commonwealth Baseball Organization. Violet has not only found his way, he's already established himself as one of the game's brightest stars, today being named the winner of the North Charles Association Nuka-Hitter Award. "I didn't expect to hit .353 this year, that's for sure," the first baseman said. The Starlight Lady Killers star also put up a .439 on-base percentage this year, with 143 hits, 38 doubles, 1 triple, 24 home runs, 84 RBIs and 82 runs scored. He received 1 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Ryan Combs of the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys finished second in voting, while Well Done Dungan of the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud finished third. Woodard - The Slog Ghouls - 0 - 4 Dan Erb - Concord Radstags - 0 - 3 Glenn Higinbotham - Starlight Lady Killers - 0 - 2 Michael Fogcrawler - Nordhagen Beach Party Boys - 0 - 1 Great Year Gets Assman SCA Nuka-Hitter Award At the age of 21, Bryan Assman of the Goodneighbor Hancocks could very well have his best years ahead of him. It's a startling thought when you consider the year he had in 2299 was good enough to win the first baseman the South Charles Association Nuka-Hitter Award. "See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "That's my basic approach." The top hitter put up a .365 batting average this year, as well as a .467 on-base percentage. He played 108 games and racked up 148 hits, 33 doubles, 1 triple, 39 home runs, 125 RBIs and 105 runs scored. He received 1 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Allen Bishop of the Diamond City Swatters finished second in voting, while Paladin Danse of the Egret Ninjas finished third. Player - Team - First Place - Total Points Bryan Assman - Goodneighbor Hancocks - 1 - 14 Allen Bishop - Diamond City Swatters - 0 - 9 Paladin Danse - Egret Ninjas - 0 - 8 Jumper Hayes - Goodneighbor Hancocks - 0 - 7 Aesed Hayjen - Vault 81 Dwellers - 0 - 6 Ben Pettinato - Quincy Gunners - 0 - 5 Wayne Lacy - Diamond City Swatters - 0 - 4 B.J. Perez - Oberland T-51s - 0 - 3 Deer Quickwalker - Vault 81 Dwellers - 0 - 2 Good Don Duck - Goodneighbor Hancocks - 0 - 1 Oberland-Sunshine Tidings Trade: Landslide and Alone to Chemists Sometimes a change of scenery can be a beneficial to a baseball player. That is the hope in Oberland and Sunshine Tidings as the teams came to an agreement today which sends 31-year-old RF Travis Alone and 34-year-old RHP Lennie Landslide to the Chemists and 21-year-old minor league 2B Andy Longface, 21-year-old minor league RHP Dan Redplate, 21-year-old minor league RF Matt Settler, 22-year-old minor league RHP Billy Faulkner and a 4th round draft pick to the T-51s. "Only time will tell if this is the right move for everyone," stated the Sunshine Tidings GM, Bobby Blonde. Thus far in his career, Landslide has put up a won-loss record of 21-15. Lifetime he has an ERA of 5.23, struck out 195 batters and held opposing teams to a .285 batting average. Wolf Moves from Perpetual 6th-Place Team to Perpetual 6th-Place Team When the County Crossing Bloodbugs decided to make a move at GM, one would think they wanted to make a splash with an up-and-coming prospect. Instead, they went with a retread when they hired former Roxbury GM Kyle Wolf. Wolf was the GM the last three years for the Knuckle Punchers. In those three years, Roxbury was 30-30, 29-79. and 39-69, finishing at the bottom of the Railroad League the past two seasons. County Crossing has been even less successful, finishing in 6th place of the Brotherhood League all four years of their existence. They finished with a franchise worst .361 winning percentage in 2299 with a 39-69 mark, 31 games back of 1st-place Nordhagen Beach. While the Bloodbugs do have some talent, most notably catcher Biter trout, the rest of the lineup is at the bottom in talent. RF Mushy Levy led the team in home runs with 13. As a team, the Bugs hit only 58. As a comparison, CBO leader Bryan Assman of Goodneighbor hit 39. "It's simple," Wolf said in his introductory press conference, "my job is to bring in more talent, people who can play ball and help this team win games. We also need to do a good job with Malden (the BMU affiliate) to develop the talent we have. While there is some talent in Malden, that team also finished last in the Commonwealth Association's Dark Hollow Pond League. There are only eight players who are predicted to have CBO potential on the team, so it may be Wolf's job to have an impressive draft next month in a talented class and maybe even consider moving some players to improve the CBO squad in the short term. County Crossing holds the #2 overall pick with current mocks predicting them to take 2B Rabbit Forest. The Knuckle Punchers are predicted to take SP Nuke Laloosh at #1. |

Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 18 October 2299 All-CBO Team Named The 2299 CBO season is now in the books. Let's take a look at the all-CBO first and second teams. 1st Team SP - Matt Pageturner, Goodneighbor RP - Josh Samm, Diamond City C - Stuart Costantino, Quincy 1B - Bryan Assman, Goodneighbor 2B - Jumper Hayes, Goodneighbor 3B - Allen Bishop, Diamond City SS - Well Done Dungan, Fort Hagen LF - Paladin Danse, Egret CF - Ryan Combs, Nordhagen Beach RF - Brightsun Ramos, Sunshine Tidings Playoffs MVP - Allen Bishop, Diamond City CBO MVP - 1B Bryan Assman, Goodneighbor Manager of the Year - Bucky Bachelor, Diamond City 2nd Team SP - Mike Cartrette, Fort Hagen RP - Wick Prater, Quincy C - Biter Trout, County Crossing 1B - Zeldoph Violet, Starlight 2B - Brian Masterson, Nordhagen Beach 3B - Ben Pettinato, Quincy SS - Aaron Erickson, Jamaica Plain LF - Andrew Nuka, Fort Hagen CF - Steve Gunkill, Quincy RF - Donny Kowalski, Abernathy List of CBO MVP Awards 2299 - 1B Bryan Assman, Goodneighbor (.365/39/125) 2298 - 1B Bryan Assman, Goodneighbor (.376/35/102) 2297 - RF Deer Quickwalker, Vault 81 (.424/15/44) 2296 - LF Paladin Danse, Egret (.416/22/76) Hall of Champions https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1621184515 https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1609904134https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1609904134https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1609904141 "It's Time": Concord's Leftswipe Thinks He's Ready for CBO Drafted in the 21st round of the 2296 Inaugural Draft, College Square Nerd Ragers centerfielder Gene Leftswipe thinks the time has come to make the move from BMU to CBO. Currently rated the #100 prospect on the Top 100 list, the 21-year-old said he is much better than that. "I'm ready, and it's time," he stated in an ESAU-sent interview response. "I've improved every year. I hit almost .400. I deserve a shot." Leftswipe finished the 2299 season with a .381 average, which would have led the BMU. However, injuries and another top prospect in the organization, CF/SP Jared Zaccone, limited Leftswipe to only 56 appearances with 23 starts. Many of those starts came when Zaccone was the starting pitcher. Still, when on the field, Leftswipe proved to be good. "We have the problem of having two talented CFs in College Square and then we have Ricky Ticky Laughy here," Concord manager Mark Gourdroot said. The Radstags front office has indicated that the team would like to be active in improving talent, so looking at the competing centerfielders may be the place to look. All three are a similar age, so Leftswipe may end up being the odd player out. Oberland-Nordhagen Beach: Big Trade The rumor has been out there for a while now and today it was made official. The Oberland T-51s have sent 28-year-old RF Ginger Rogers, 31-year-old RHP Matt Breakball and 30-year-old RHP Matt Ranger to the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys for 21-year-old minor league RF Muddy Barbano, 20-year-old minor league 2B Paul Warwick and 22-year-old 3B Ryan Bale. Nordhagen Beach gets three veterans to help solidify its team heading into the 2300 season. Lifetime Rogers has played in 336 games, batted .251 with 92 home runs and 335 base hits.In 117 relief appearances, Breakball has a record of 12-12 with 12 saves and a 4.61 ERA. Ranger has a lifetime record of 37-37 with one save. He has appeared in 95 games, starting 94. His career ERA is 5.56. None of the three prospects traded away from the Party Boys were expected to make a dent on the team, though they could help Oberland in its rebuild. Bale was on the CBO team with Nordhagen Beach, appearing in 35 games and starting four. He batted .293 on 12 for 41 hitting with six doubles and a triple. Coaches describe Bale as "brash" and were looking to offload him after several players complained about his behavior. |
I must say I'm a little underwhelmed by this trade. Granted, the Boys aren't giving up much - but they're not gaining much, either. Fair enough, a little veteran cover, but I don't see any difference-makers in there! Maybe it's just teeing us up for the big one to come. Well, a guy can hope....

Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 19 October 2299 Mulligan Surprised on Home Visit Corvega Flamers (Sunshine Tidings) SS Surprise Mulligan got a whopper of a surprise on a visit to his hometown of Bradberton. While touring the World of Refreshment facility, Mulligan spotted a nukalurk. Assuming it was a stuffed display as part of the attraction, he approached the beast, realizing too late that it was alive and angry. The nukalurk snatched Mulligan by the neck before an alert security guard was able to make its way to the attack point and blast the nukalurk's face off. Mulligan was seriously injured in the ordeal and rushed to the emergency station at the Nuka-Cola Bottling Plant. He is expected to be moved to the facility in Nuka-Town so that he can be treated by medical staff there. There is no word yet on the extent of his injuries, but an inquiry through Nuka News indicated that his injuries were "life-threatening." Abernathy's Rubric Looking to Make the Grade With four good starters above him, Mike Rubric is no sure shot to break into the starting rotation for the Abernathy Adamantium anytime soon. Still, the 22-year-old former 1st-round draft pick is looking to test himself and his coaches are giving him passing grades so far. "Mike is improving every day," Adamantium PC Adam Duran-Duran said. "Once he has his fastball as a full-go, he's starting for us, may even be our ace." Drafted in the 1st round of the 2297 Rookie Draft, Rubric was a starter for two years at Bunker Hill before being called up late in the season for the Adamantium. In four appearances for Abernathy, he was relegated to bullpen action where he threw 10.0 innings, allowing four earned runs, walking five, and striking out five on his way to a 3.60 ERA. With the Gun Fu, he started 37 games over two seasons with 38 total appearances. He accumulated a record of 10-9 with a 3.54 ERA, including striking out 216 batters in 221.0 innings pitched. Rubric is behind four plus-30 pitchers in his quest to start. That could mean getting his shot sooner than later with Brad Westing (32), recently-acquired Gerald Jerry (33), Bad Company Grognak (34), and Gary Estate (31) only one bad injury or a dead arm away from Rubric passing them. "I'm ready to be tested," Rubric said. "Every day I study and I practice and I feel confident that when it is my time, I will pass with flying colors. I believe it." Costantino Overwhelmed by Fans, Suffers Injury Quincy Gunners all-star catcher Stuart Costantino was dining at the Quarry Balcony Saloon when a few fans noticed him. Costantino has become a local celebrity, and for good reason, due to his success on the ball field. In this case, though, the reaction of fans asking for him to sign their skin led to the rickety balcony to collapse, injuring all involved. Costantino suffered a fractured cheekbone and a laceration to his left thigh. Other than some healing time, he is expected to be OK for the 2300 season. Hearing the news, Gunners owner Smiling Larry was doing anything but smiling. "Fans have to back off Stu," Larry said. "Next time, I hope someone puts a bullet through the head of anyone putting Stu in danger." |

From the Nick Valentine Files - Case 006969
Chapter 1: A Priest, a Rabbi, and a Synth Walk into a Bar
Chapter 2: Roses Are Red, Blood Is Too October 2289 https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1601982515https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1601982515 A Hubflower for Magnolia: The Case of the Jilted Lovers Chapter 3: Trouble at the Third Rail My first thoughts about “The Kid” in this investigation was that either he was a synth like me and has been around long enough to be into all sorts of shenanigans, or he was just a coincidence in the case of the murdered man. Before we arrived in Goodneighbor, I got a sense that there was going to be more to this case than a simple stalker murdering another with the use of hubflowers as garnish. The blooms were amiss, and just like any case that involves a lovely dame, something else was amiss. “I forgot to mention that I didn’t tell anyone I was seeking you,” Magnolia said. “I suddenly felt like I didn’t know who to trust.” “I appreciate your confidence in me,” I said. “By the by, why is Nate a no go in this case? He’s usually my righthand man in cases like these.” “It’s . . . complicated. He’s . . . complicated. I feel like a few more people will get blasted away with a gatling laser if he’s involved.” I understood. In my police career and time as a synth investigator, I never met a person as successful with solving a case with violence as Nate Howard. In my entire career, I had probably put five down, total. Of course, Eddie Winter was the one that gave me the most satisfaction, but that is a different tale for a different day. “We’re here,” Magnolia said. The downtown streets were already feeling safer since Nate’s eradication of mutants, ghouls, and fools mucking up the city’s streets. Still, the flashing neon signs of “Goodneighbor” with a matching neon arrow pointing to a rusty iron door did not lend itself to a place of luxury. The exclusivity of the town with a fledgling city surrounding it gave people a feeling of insecurity going through that door, and I expected the townsfolk wanted it that way. Visitors were allowed, but they had better be polite. Or else. The door was unlocked, so I held it open for the flower accompanying me. She stepped through with a smirk and a nod, and then I was able to look in on the outdoor lobby of sorts, a mash of painted signs and woven banners promising all sorts of pleasures of the flesh. Some may have appealed to me if I had any flesh to speak of. Instead, this bucket of bolts looked upon the slimeball settlement with more of something like contempt. Except, it wasn’t quite contempt. No, cases like this make my electronic heartbeat a few paces faster, and a rundown graveyard of a city like this in the new, free Boston meant that I had a purpose for the first time since the case “Close to Home” with the Nakanos. But that, too, is a different story for a different time. This was Scollay Square of Old Boston, a vibrant area filled with lush hotels, elite clubs, and theaters for some of the less wholesome residents and visitors. As the 20th Century changed to the 21st Century and modernization of Boston began to take hold, the Square remained as its antique self. People with more money than they knew what to do with were also looking to culture themselves, and Scollay Square became the place for rich gents and dames to spend a dollar or two. When the bombs fell, many of those nouveau riches of the Commonwealth fell right here, hats in hand. It wasn’t until after post-War John Hancock among others made it a settlement of their own that the place got the name Goodneighbor. Long before the war, Goodneighbor was no place at all, but a woman. Locked away under tight security untouched by the remnants of war and radiation, Hancock found a shrine to Mary Goodneighbor. Her photos were lit up in black and white and nude all over. Hancock liked her name, and that is how Goodneighbor became the place it is today, dedicated to its founder, a girl nicknamed “The Body.” Once we were Inside the gates, a youngster spotted Magnolia and dashed off. He was probably looking for the reward we saw posted on a flyer right when we walked through: “Missing: Magnolia. 250 caps for any info. Contact Hancock directly.” We walked towards the one place where people would be happiest to see Magnolia, the Third Rail, the jazziest jazz club in any subway station in the Commonwealth. As far as I knew, it was the only jazz club in the Commonwealth. The Third Rail was the club where Magnolia crooned her tunes live, the same ones recorded on holotapes and played over the DCR and WRVR radio waves throughout the Commonwealth. Many men came as far as the signals blew to get a live glimpse of the sultry dame behind those seductive lyrics. Many men also hoped they might be the man who’s man enough. Most didn’t but they still tried until they got booted. For the few who did, they had problems afterwards. Most of them, it was because of lovesickness. We descended the stairs into the Third Rail and saw the youngster excited and gesturing about Magnolia until we popped our heads in down those steep stale stairs. “As I live and beep, Magnolia you’re alive!” Whitechapel Charlie, the nannybot bartender with a bowtie, a bowler hat, and an out-of-place Cockney accent, called out. The others stopped and gawked as we descended the stairs, not sure if they were happy to see Magnolia alive or shocked to know she was. The young man held out his hand awaiting an award. Hancock gave him a kick and a sneer instead. “Well, Magnolia,” Hancock began. “You are a sight for sore eyes. And you, Nick, I should have known you would be a part of this. Where’s Nate?” Hancock was the mayor of Goodneighbor and proprietor of the Third Rail. His ghoulish features popped in his American colonial outfit, another of his treasures of Goodneighbor. Next to him stood the main bouncer and fellow ghoul Ham, Hancock’s personal security chief Fahrenheit, and a second bouncer I never met introduced as Clockspring Davis, a young man with a full face scar and an eye patch where his left eye had been. I wanted to talk to The Kid, but all they knew of were his whereabouts from one night ago. “Him?” Ham said. “He came back in last night, crying, ‘Where’s Magnolia? Let me speak to Magnolia!’ I dragged him out and tossed him on the street.” I was wondering who they suspected of taking Magnolia away if the Kid had a lullaby. No one seemed to know what his name was or where he was from, not even Magnolia. He was an enigma wrapped in a mystery, and I needed to find him to get some grasp on what I was looking for in this case. As Magnolia revealed to me on our journey from Diamond City, the dead man turned out to be one of her one-time lovers. A random dead man means something, but a dead lover means another. That dead man was a clue I had to pursue. And so was The Kid. “The Neighborhood Watch escorted him away towards the gates,” Ham said. “I don’t know who it was. The club was busy and we had people waiting to get in the club.” I made a note to myself to interview the Neighborhood Watch supervisor. The Watch was a group of paid, armed guards in Goodneighbor itching for someone to pull a weapon or cause a disturbance. Dressed like mafia from my time, these well-dressed gents had a lot of firepower and knew how to use it. They got violent when violence was necessary, but someone like The Kid would just be escorted or dragged to the front door and asked not to return to Goodneighbor. So, I also had to look outside the gates to find where The Kid was. As it turned out, I didn’t have to look very long. Young Tiffany Slavin ran into the Third Rail. Her father was in charge of security at the Hotel Rexford. “We found him! We found Magnolia’s kidnapper!” Tiffany looked at Magnolia, confused. “H-he’s dead.” I chimed in. “Let me guess. Cut to hell? Stuffed with hubflowers?” “Y-Yes,” Tiffany stammered “How’d you know?” “Call it a hunch. And a problem,” I said. |
Great write up :D Though I did think that picture of Nick was Freddy from horror films :o heh.
