Carl Riefler
Carl Riefler was a first baseman on the 1962 Modesto Colts. I'm not posting his photo because I'm not quite sure which one he is within a group photo, but I'll give you a link to the photo. It's at:
http://oxyathletics.com/sports/bsb/2...20130710kimuxp The associated story gives eleven names, including coach Grant Dunlap, who had been a major leaguer. I only have photos of Dunlap when he was young, so I can't match him to any of the eleven faces in this photo. Riefler and Dunlap were 6'2" in height. Don Hagen was 5'11". I'm not sure whether any of the others played pro ball, so I didn't try to look up their heights. If the names are meant to be read left to right for purpose of identifying the men in the photo, then Riefler should be in the back wearing a print shirt, fourth from the right, but I'm not certain that they are so intended. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=riefle001car |
Pat Dempsey

Pat Dempsey is one of those guys I would have thought actually got a big league AB...Perhaps it was because he was on a Topps card or because he was a prospect for several years....but, he never got that AB (although it seems as if he did get on a big league roster but never played)
The brother of longtime big leaguer Rick....Pat has had a very successful run post baseball as one of the premier long distance drivers and a member of the Long Drive Hall of Fame Pat was a 2nd round (January) pick of the A's in 1977 and he was in their organization thru the 1982 season. His best season was in 1980 when he played for their AAA club at Ogden and hit .318 with 2 HR, 41 RBI, 59 RS, in 111 games. He spent almost all of 1983 with the Orioles AA team driving in 63 and batting .264. He was with the Yankees AA team in 84, Indians AAA team in 85, and he closed out his pro career with 2 seasons on the Twins AAA roster finishing his career with 1027 games played (819 at C) 3442 AB, 46 HR and a .268 .AVG |

"It's a little known fact that Patrick Dempsey turned down a soccer scholarship to pursue his love of baseball. He spent 12 years in the minor leagues, moving up to the big leagues, where he fondly refers to himself as "a big league bench warmer". Just after a few short months, he suffered a torn rotator cuff injury & was sent back to the minors." |

It would have been helpful if Dempsey's website had specified the year when he was claiming that he had been in the major leagues. I did a search on his entire minor league career 1977-1984 using the terms "pat dempsey" and "rotator cuff." Came up with nothing. That would have been too easy. This additional newspaper searching did reveal that he was a non-roster invitee to spring camp with the A's in 1977 and 1979. Still didn't do anything to place him on the major league roster during any season. Since his website provides a link to a page for a contact, and that contact page allows you to write a message, why don't you write to Pat Dempsey to see if he will clarify what he meant by being in the majors and see if he will specify what season it happened, if he contends that it was during the regular season? |
