POSSIBLE GOOD NEWS... I FOUND A BACKUP OF THE IPA AND MAY BE ABLE TO PICK UP THE LEAGUE IN ITS 52ND SEASON... computer problems had forced me to abandon the league a few months ago... it looks like I will only lose five seasons, from 2052 to 2056... I will just pick up with the 52nd season and replay it. I finally created my Islandian Pro Alliance of Ruthlandia and Tycobbia. I will begin play soon. I will totally sim during the regular season. I will give a midseason league summary. I will post an end-of-the-regular-season recap and cover the playoffs game-by-game. There are 8 six-team divisions with inter-divisional play. 154-game regular season. The champion in each division will quality for the playoffs. There will three rounds of playoff series: the Division Championship Series (best-of-7), League Championship Series (best-of-7) and the IPA Pro Cup Series (best of-7). 1950's Era Baseball |

INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE CZAR AND MONEY MOGULS CREATE PRO BASEBALL LEAGUE The Islandian Pro Alliance of Ruthlandia and Tycobbia came into being when a group of dedicated men that loved the game of baseball got together with a group of men, who had power and money...and a love of baseball. John Banson is the father of the league. He had been the commissioner of the Industrial Baseball League of Ruthlandia and Tycobbia. Banson is very moral and ethical and ran the organization that way. He ruffled quite a few corporate feathers during his tenure as he really cleaned up the underhanded and illegal payments to industrial league players. He finally convinced the corporations to set up a professional league and make it legal to pay players to play baseball. Banson brought together dedicated baseball men like Manny Earl of the Sugar Valley Rattlers, Rob Jackson of the Forest City Lumberjacks, Rip Calkin of the La Claire Lynx and Gary Louis of the Arlon Champions with the power brokers, movers and shakers of Ruthlandia and Tycobbia, Jock Ewing of the Waleska Westerners, Jorge Trujillo of Belair Beach Sunbirds, Louis "Sugar Lips" Charles of the Bay St. Claire Buccaneers, Conway Birdie of the Cape Coral Hurricanes, Brent Steiner of the Bayview Vikings, Captain Stanislav Lem of the Valmara Vipers and the various and sundry corporations that sponsored company teams. The dedicated baseball people would only be involved in this project, if John Banson was given absolute control as commissioner. Earl, Jackson, Calkin and Louis were well-respected throughout the Islands by all of the local teams. Without the support of the local town teams and the Islandian legislatures, the big time operators and moneyed interests would not have the established stars of the industrial and amateur leagues they needed to make the IPA a success. After much debate, argument, threats and counter-threats, the Good Guys won and the Power Guys had to give in. Otherwise, they would not have had a league to play in. Charles and Birdie, who love the game more than money, were very instrumental in breaking the deadlock. They joined the Good Guys. That is how the Islandian Pro Alliance of Ruthlandia and Tycobbia began. |

Islandian History
Islandia is composed of two countries, Ruthlandia and Tycobbia. They were originally quite remote and isolated and no one was very interested in them. That is, until the early 1850's. With the slavery question rapidly coming to a head in the United States, a group of abolitionists got together and decided to find a place where they could set up a country free of slavery and racial and religious intolerance. So this is how the two countries came into being. Some farsighted citizens of the Northern United States and the Southern United States could see that the country was headed for civil war, which would soon tear their worlds apart. That is why they emigrated. They came to Ruthlandia and Tycobbia in peace and purchased their land and set up their society. Their points of entry were Beechwood in Ruthlandia and Bay St. Clair in Tycobbia. They also quickly went to the countries interiors and set up the capitals of Forest City and LaClaire. Up until their arrival the island had been a wild and lawless territory, filled with explorers and adventurers, who put down no roots. As the years went by, civilization, law and government arose and expanded. And today Islandia is a properous island, where many ethnic groups and religions live in peace and harmony. In the late 1890's new settlers brought with them a new American game called baseball. Within ten years each town had it own amateur team and the game thrived. By 1920, it had been embedded in the fabric of Islandian culture and its way of life. Baseball became so popular that activity and commerce in the towns practically shut down in the afternoons, so that the inhabitants could attend the local ballgame. Eventually towns would take a "baseball siesta" from 2 to 6 pm. This custom spread from town to town and now it is universal on the entire island. Baseball truly is the National Pastime here in Islandia. |

TYCOBBIAN AND RUTHLANDIAN LEGISLATURES OVERWHELMINGLY APPROVE PRO BASEBALL Government legislation is quite slow and ponderous in Islandia...except when it comes to their beloved sport of baseball. Both the Tycobbian and Ruthlandian legislatures very quickly deliberated and passed bills allowing the formation of a professional baseball league in Islandia. Pro baseball is a new concept for Islandia. Most of the Islandians have always felt the baseball was their sacred sport and should not be corrupted by money. They had always rejected paying someone to play baseball. One should play only for the sheer joy of the sport. They have played baseball in Ruthlandia and Tycobbia since the late 1890's. Over the years it has progressed from pure amateur to industrial league and now to professional. For many years the ruling baseball body, the Amateur Baseball Alliance, kept the game pure and no one played for money...just the love of the game. As time passed and the competition between the towns grew in intensity, money moved into the game...many times "under the table". In the 1920's, the ABA altered it rules and allowed players to receive compensation in the form of employment at the companies that had teams in the industrial leagues. Most town teams became company-sponsored or supported. But this didn't solve the pay problem. Many players did no actual work for their salaries. All they did was play baseball for the company. It continued this way until 2001. In an effort to control the widespread violation of the spirit of the ABA rules, the time came for them to just admit that players played baseball for money. That is when the Islandian Pro Alliance came into being. |

Islandian Pro Alliance News: Opening Day The baseball fan's call to action "Play Ball!" can be heard all across Islandia with the arrival of Opening Day. At long last the 2001 season is getting under way with what promises to be an exciting first season of professional baseball. The Islandian Pro Alliance begins its inaugural season today with a full slate of 12 games. Yeah, it broke my heart not to include all 60 teams. It was tough to cut down to 24 teams. But it would be impossible for me to properly cover a league that large. 24 teams will hard enough. I don't want to totally sim...I don't enjoy the league that way. I want to see each and game and keep track of all the milestones and records, team and individual, that the game doesn't keep. It may take six months to play a season. 12 games a day is a lot to play out. |

Saturday, April 21, 2001 Ruthlandia Baseball Union - South Division Marston Slips by Waleska The Marston Nine gained their first ever win in the Islandian Pro Alliance 6-4 over the Waleska Westerners on the road. The Niners lashed out 13 hits and were sparked by third baseman Roland Thomas and first sacker Johnny Berthold, each with a pair of RBIs. Thomas had a two-run double in the third inning and Berthold hammered a 2-run shot in the seventh. Starting pitcher Cody Hill nabbed the win with a good 7 innings of work. He gave up 9 hits and 3 earned runs and left leading 6-4 with 2 outs in the eighth. Milt Wilson survived a shaky performance, but got the save, despite 2 hits and 2 walks. The Westerners racked up 11 hits in defeat, but stranded too many runners. Both ballclubs were a little shaky in the field with a new IPA mark for errors. They totaled 5 between them as Marston committed three, while Waleska had 2 miscues. Westerner Stadium was almost filled to capacity with 12,746 at the game. Sunbirds Thompson K's 10 in 'Jacks Shutout Flashy southpaw Carl Thompson of the Belair Beach Sunbirds opened the season in style with 10 strikeouts in a brilliant 4-hit shutout. He blanked Forest City 2-0 at Bayside Park before a rowdy opening day crowd of 11,942. Buddy Hutchinson went 7 innings in defeat and surrendered only 2 runs. Catcher Dusty James sparked the Sunbirds attack with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. He collected his first fourbagger of the year. Rattlers Power Too Much for Claxton Sugar Valley outslugged the Claxton Diamonds 10-6 to open the season with a win. The Rattlers rattled the fences with 3 homers and 11 hits, wrapping up the game with a 3-run eighth inning to finish off the Diamonds. Slingshot McFall, Flipper Bird and Nick Price all smashed roundtrippers for the victors. Closer Gregg Neal came in the eighth and got the save with a scoreless relief effort. He was Spring Valley's only effective hurler. The Rattlers had 11,626 in attendance at Farmers Memorial Park on opening day. |

Saturday, April 21, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union - North Division Far Mountain Takes Tight Game from Colfax Sonny Elliott outdueled Flash Guidry as the Far Mountain Redhawks opened the 2001 season with a 3-1 victory over the Colfax Blasters. Elliott checked them on 7 hits to get his first win. Guidry deserved a better fate. He was the victim of shoddy fielding and only gave up one earned run, while striking out 9. Second baseman Shirai Kobayashi had 2 hits to pace the Redhawks, including a solo homer. Far Mountain drew over 10,000 to the first ever pro game at Sky High Stadium. V's Balfour and McDonald Too Tough for A's The Glasco A's opened their inaugural season in the IPA with an easy 6-2 drubbing of the Volusia Vigilantes. Jesse Balfour and Jeremiah McDonald teamed up to whip the V's. Balfour started and went 6.2 innings for the win. He tired and suffered from control problems with 6 walks, but held Volusia to just 2 runs before he retired for the day. McDonald shut down the Vigilantes the rest of the game on one hit to get the save. Glasco belted out 11 hits in the game. Catcher Pete Kilgour was the Athletics batting leader with two hits and his first homer of the year. Right fielder Ox Beauvais collected 2-for-4 and drove in 2 runs. Lefty Raul Sandoval took the loss for the V's, giving up 5 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings. Over 9,000 fans packed the ballpark. Vipers Zalewski Zaps Elnora On opening day 2001 it was all Zarek Zalewski. The tough righthander for the visting Valmara Vipers stopped the homestanding Elnora All-Stars 4-1, limiting them to 7 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 5 in a route-going performance. The losing pitcher was Tyrone Gray, who went 7 innings and allowed 5 hits and all 4 runs. The All-Stars had over 12,000 in attendance at State Fair Park. |

Saturday, April 21, 2001 Tycobbian Baseball Union - East Division Cape Coral Chills Hellcats, 5-2 On a rainy day in Hartsdale before an almost capacity crowd at Pioneer Park, the Hellcats took it on the chin against the Cape Coral Hurricanes 5-2. Portsider Wally Robinson held them to 6 hits and 1 run before he ran out of gas in the eighth. Katsuyuki Nagashima got the last 5 outs for the save, but he did give up a run in the ninth. The 'Canes ripped starting pitcher Danny Griffin for 5 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings and were never challenged. Cape Coral's right fielder Rob Kelly got the only home run of the game, a solo shot in the second inning. Fortunato's Double Wins It in the 12th A full house at De la Vega Stadium really got their money's worth with the hometown Luxora Zorros edging South Fork 2-1 in twelve innings. CF Tom Fontunato's ground rule double plated Kenny Baker from second base with the winning score. It was a very well-pitched game. Ken Callahan went the first 10 innings for the Zorros and gave up only 1 run on 5 hits. Reliever Andy Stevens shutout the Stallions in the last 2 frames to get the victory. South Fork's Ken Olson went the distance and lost a heartbreaker. He allowed 11 hits, but fanned 9 and walked only one in a fine performance. There was only one home run in the game. CF Eddie Isaksen hit one out for the Stallions to tie the score at 1-1 in the seventh. There were 9426 fans in the stands for the 2001 opener, played on a cold, rainy and dreary afternoon. The game was played in 38-degree weather. Hatch, Snow, Braun Pace Naturals Over Ninjas Ozarka rode solid pitching by Luther Hatch and home runs by Floyd Snow and Terry Braun to whip Ginza 5-3 before a disappointed full house at Ninja Stadium. Hatch tossed a complete game, surrendering 8 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. Snow smashed a 3-run roundtripper in the fourth off Ninja starting pitcher Kazuhiro Nakayama and Braun clubbed a 2-run job in the eighth off Toshiharu Ito. Takashi Fujimoto put one out of the park for Ginza. Nakayama was the losing pitcher, yielding 3 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings. He fanned 9 and walked 4. Nakayama left for a pinchhitter in the seventh, trailing by a score of 3-1. |

Saturday, April 21, 2001 Tycobbian Baseball Union - West Division Viks Survive Arlon Rally In baseball it is not how many hits you get, it's how many runs you score that counts. Bayview only got 5 hits, but made them count, especially in the 4-run sixth inning. That gave the Vikings a 5-1 lead over Arlon and they manage to hold on for a shaky 5-4 win. The Champions outhit the winners 13 to 5, but came away with a loss. Each club had a home run, Phil Kanaan had a one-run blast in the second frame for Bayview, while Jerry Keller made it close with a 2-run salvo in the last of the ninth for the Champs. Frank Wells picked up the win with some help from Buzzy Lewis in the ninth. Wells was hit often as he gave up 12 hits, but he was tough in the clutch and permitted only 4 runs, 3 of them earned. Ace Howe suffered the loss for Arlon. He permitted 5 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings of work. 2 walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch in the fatal sixth played a big part in the defeat. Frogs Win in 10th on PB The Fairfax Frogs made the home crowd happy at the Frog Pond with an exciting 8-7 ten-inning victory over Bay St. Clair. Fairfax RF Jeff Callahan had a banner day at bat with 3 hits and 4 RBIs to pace the hard-fought battle. In the decisive tenth, a single, sacrifice and another single placed runners at first and third. The winning run came across easily on a passed ball when catcher Jake Singleton couldn't handle a pitch. Maury Smith, first baseman for the Buccaneers, had the game's only home run. Hot Rod Patrick had a fine game for the Bucs with 3 hits in 6 tries and 3 RBIs. Gerry Fisher hurled a scoreless tenth to chalked up his first win of the year for Fairfax, while Denny Coulon took the loss in relief for Bay St. Clair. Blue Sox West Whips Lynx Bennie West dominated the La Claire Lynx on their home field before a packed stadium of over 13,000. The Blue Lake righthander stymied them 6-1 on just 4 singles. West whiffed 4 and walked 3 in a strong route-going performance. La Claire starter Nickie Baumgartner sustained the loss, allowing 4 runs and 6 hits in 6+ innings. Leading the Blue Sox offense were second baseman Ken Bennett with 2-5, including a triple, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored and center fielder Donnie Frazier with 2-4 and an RBI. |

Sunday, April 22, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union - North Division Vipers Squeeze by All-Stars Reliever Andre Trepagnier saved the day for the Valmara Vipers with a strong four-inning relief job. He came on in the sixth for the struggling Todd Turner and shut down the Elnora All-Stars 7-6. Trepagnier allowed only one run the rest of the way to get the save. Turner picked up the win. Both clubs had a dozen hits each. The Vipers were paced by center fielder Jan Szymanski with 2 hits, 2 RBIs and a home run. The All-Stars attack was sparked by second baseman Gil Foster and first baseman Will Jackson, each with a pair of RBIs. Elnora starter Carl Costas took the loss, permitting 10 hits and 6 runs in 5 innings. A's Powerball Outslugs V's Glasco poured it on the Volusia Vigilantes today at Athletics Field and romped 12-5. The A's attack was led by Scotty McPherson with 3-for-4 and 4 RBIs, Chet Reynolds with 2-for-5 and 4 RBIs, including a 3-run home run clout and Ox Beauvais, who cracked a 2-run blast. That was more than enough runs for winning pitcher Arnie McFalls. He went all the way, gave up 11 hits, fanned 10 and walked 4. FM's Strickland Stuns Colfax With HR in 9th A dramatic ninth-inning comeback highlighted by Johnny Strickland three-run homer brought home an 11-8 victory for Far Mountain over Colfax. The Blasters took an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Redhawk closer Pat Langlais couldn't close it out. Dave Davis delivered a sac fly to tie it up, then Strickland hit the game-winner. Strickland had two roundtrippers for the day and drove in 4 runs. Al Nixon also contributed 3 RBIs with a two-run double and and an RBI groundout. Colfax outhit Far Mountain 13 to 12, but just didn't have the pitching to stop the Redhawks. Neither team got any pitching today. Far Mountain won despite committing four errors. None of the miscues led to any runs. That is now the IPA record for the most errors by one team in a game. |

Sunday, April 22, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union - South Division Pace Dominates Westerners In the first game of a twinbill at Westerner Field in Waleska, big 6'6" Nick Pace of Marston was outstanding in the 7-1 triumph over the Westerners. Pace limited them to just four hits, fanned five and walked three for his first win of the season. Chris Deangelo pounded a three-run home run in the first inning and the Nine was off and running and never looked back. Johnny Berthold slammed his second of the season for Marston in the fourth frame. Joel Harrell was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs in five innings. Nine Sweep Twinbill from Westerners The Marston Nine outslugged Waleska 9-6 to sweep a pair of games at Westerner Field to remain unbeaten this season. Marston whacked out 15 hits off three Westerner pitchers and were led by Ronnie Horn with 3 hits and 2 runs scored and Lenny Torricelli with a pair of hits, including a 2-run homer. Sam Dixon, Johnny Berthold, Keith Green and Tommy Reinhold all had two hits each for the Nine. Casey Ledbetter labored, but picked up the win. He gave up 10 hits and 6 runs in 8+ innings. Kenny Bagby got the final out of the game to save it for Ledbetter. Waleska suffered from poor pitching. The loss went to Marv Chancellor, who permitted 5 runs and 9 hits in 6+ innings. Big Hoss Burkhalter, Ernie Fletcher and Ken Sanders provided the longball for Waleska, who have loss three in a row now. 'Jacks Jack 4 HR to Beat Sunbirds Forest City crushed Belair Beach 10-5 with a 16-hit rampage that included 4 home runs. Left fielder Chuck Hill went 3-3 with 2 homers and 4 RBIs, right fielder Benny Davis chipped in 4 hits, including a home run and scored 3 times, while second baseman Jesse Wolf added a solo shot. Southpaw Brian Charles notched the win. He allowed the Sunbirds 8 hits and only 3 earned runs. Dirk Garrett took the loss, lasting only 4 innings and giving up 4 runs and 7 hits. The Lumberjacks now hold the IPA record for most homers by one team. Diamonds Set Records in Win over Rattlers Claxton buried Sugar Valley under a 6-homer barrage 14-5 at Farmers Memorial Park this afternoon. The Diamonds walloped 19 hits in all and pulled away in the last four frames. Lanky 6'7" Chris Gallagher came to the rescue of starter Pat Castellani, who had a rough time, giving up 6 runs and 10 hits in just 5 innings. Gallagher came on and protected a 10-6 lead with 4 scoreless innings. Castellani got credit for the win and Gallagher picked up a save. Phil Howard sustained the loss for the Rattlers, leaving after 5 innings. Bobby Ritter and Donnie McCoy each slapped out 4 hits and Karl Olsen had 3 to lead the Claxton hit parade. Ritter, Vern Jennings, Dixie Baker, Winky Rush, McCoy and Pete Robinson all delivered home runs. The Diamonds now hold the ISA record for most homers, most hits and most runs in a game. |

Sunday, April 22, 2001 Tycobbian Baseball Union - East Division Abreu's Blast Dooms Hurricanes Cape Coral and Hartsdale battled long and hard for 11 innings, when Hellcat shortstop Francisco Abreu hammered a home run to win it 4-3. Both squads got solid pitching with the victory going to Phil Reed. He held the Hurricanes scoreless the last two frames. Katsuyuki Nagashima was the home run victim and suffered the loss. Todd Seals and Whiz Weaver topped the Hartsdale hitters with 3 hits apiece. Roberto Betancourt led Cape Coral with 3 hits. Starters Gary Fountain for the Hurricanes and Glenn Mann for the Hellcats both went 7 innings and pitched well, giving up 3 runs each. Stallions Slam Zorros, 10-1 Sharp pitching backed up by excellent hitting made it easy for South Fork to shellac the Luxora Zorros 10-1. Righthander Flint Battle was on top of his game with a superb 4-hit outing. He had 6 strikeouts and walked 3. And he got lots of run support from Paul Giles, Mac Stewart and Glenn Holliday, all of whom belted homers. The Stallions piled up 13 hits in the game, led by Stewart and Gene Woodruff, both with 3 hits each. Johnny Montel got the loss as he made a quick exit, allowing 5 runs and 8 hits in just 3 innings. Naturals Nakagawa Shines in Relief Ozarka was down 3-0 after 5 innings and 4-2 after 6, but rallied to defeat Ginza, 5-4. Yasuyuki Nakagawa relieved the tired Ted Didriksen in the seventh inning with the score tied at 4-all and breezed through the Ginza Ninjas lineup, retiring 9 of the 10 men he faced. He was helped out by the hitting heroics of Ronnie Patterson, who tied it up with a 2-run double in the top of the seventh and decided it with another RBI-double in the top of the ninth. Reliever Cody Moore was shackled with the loss as he gave up the Nats last 3 scores. He took over for starter Vic Rousakis, who surrendered only 2 runs and 5 hits, while fanning 11 in just 6 innings. |

Sunday, April 22, 2001 Tycobbian Baseball Union - West Division Lynx Lambast Blue Sox, 14-5 The game was never in doubt -- La Claire wrapped it up early with 5 runs in the third and 4 in the fourth -- totally destroying the Blue Lake Blue Sox 14-5. Leading the Lynx attack were Rich Hart with 3 hits, 2 homers and 5 RBIs and Dennis Weiss with 3 hits, a home run and 3 RBIs. Donnie Bullock was pinned with the loss, ripped for 9 runs in just 4 innings. Only 5 were earned. Winner Pat Daniels labored, but finished the game, although he surrendered 5 runs and 10 hits. Vikings Win 11-Inning Thriller The Bayview Vikings jumped on Rod Kelley for 3 runs in the eleventh to knock off Arlon 8-5. Kelley retired the first two batters, but then surrendered a double, single and 2 walks to force in a run. Offensively the Vikings shelled Arlon for 14 hits with 5 players collecting 2 hits each. Arlon was led by Jerry Keller and Kris Gervais, each had 3-for-5. Dwayne Coleman rapped a solo shot for Bayview, while the Champs smacked 3 out of the park. Archie Berry, Smoke Zakharov and Jerry Keller each collected one. It was Keller's second of the season. The two clubs combined for the most doubles in an IPA game with 7. Bayview had 5 and Arlon hit 2. Frogs Leslie Halts Bucs, 5-1 Fairfax lefty Jack Leslie cruised to a 5-1 triumph over Bay St. Clair at the Frog Pond. He checked them on 7 hits, while fanning 5 and walking 3. Stan Cobb headed up the hitters with 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Ted Jorgerson copped the loss, giving up 4 runs and 5 hits in 5 innings. Only one of the runs was earned. |

Monday, April 23, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union North Division Vipers Edge All-Stars in 12 Innings It took twelve long innings, but Valmara finally did in Elnora, 6-4. A one-out double by Louis Sharp and a triple by Jet Kazmarek won it for the Vipers. Kazmarek got an additional run, when he scored on Jan Szymanski's sac fly. Danny Blauser got the win, going 4 scoreless innings in relief of starting pitcher Paul Schoenfeld. Alonso Herrera was tagged with the loss. Valmara is unbeaten in 3 games this season. The game's top batsmen were Szymanski 2-3 with 3 RBIs and Sharp and Kazmarek, each with three hits and two runs scored. For the All-Stars, Gil Foster led the way with three hits and three RBIs, including a home run and Art Atkins had a perfect 4-for-4 day. Howard and Salazar Homers Beat Glasco Two 2-run homers paved the way for Volusia to power past the Glasco Athletics 5-3. Alejandro Salazar parked one in the first inning off losing pitcher Kenny Metcalf and Lonnie Howard did it again in the third. That was all Hank Massey needed. He scattered 8 hits in a route-going performance, struck out one and walked one to gain the win. Lloyd Windham was his only nemesis with 3 hits, including a 2-run home run. Metcalf permitted 5 runs in 5 innings, but only 3 of them were earned. Glasco relievers Jeremiah McDonald and Ray Cook held the Vigilantes scoreless over the last four innings. Volusia is 1-2 on the season, while Glasco drops to 2-1. Moore Saves the Day for Redhawks Far Mountain's Vincent Moore bailed out starter Denny Arthur in the eighth inning as the Redhawks held on to beat the Colfax Blasters, 6-4. It was Moore's first save of the year. Arthur got credit for the win, but struggled thoughout the game with his control -- he walked 6. So far, Far Mountain has taken the first three games of the series and is unbeaten this season. Johnny Stickland and Shirai Kobayashi continued their longball assault on IPA pitchers. Both homered again for the Redhawks and accounted for 3 runs between them. Strickland now has hit 3 for the season and Kobayashi has walloped 2. Greg Forrest absorbed the loss for the Blasters, yielding 8 hits and 6 runs in 5 innings. South Division Marston Nine Mauls Westerners It was a big day for Marston. The Nine pounded out 18 hits in a recording-setting day for them in the 15-2 romp over Waleska. That is the most runs ever in the young history of the Islandian Pro Alliance. Marston has won all four games with the Westerners this season. Tommy Reinhold was 3-for-6 with a homer and 5 RBIs, Ken Green 3-for-6 with 3 RBIs and Sam Dixon 3-for-6 with an RBI. The Nine also set a league record for most doubles in a game with 6. Righthander Bob Lowe tossed a solid game, putting down the Westerners on a six-hitter. He struck out four and walked two in a complete game. Rudy Kraft was the losing pitcher. The old record for the most runs was set April 22, 2001 by the Claxton Diamonds, when they plastered Sugar Valley 14-2. Sunbirds Nip 'Jacks in 9th, 10-9 Shortstop Danny Church of the Belair Beach tied the game with a solo homer in the eighth and won it 10-9 in the bottom of the ninth with a sacrifice fly. In all the Sunbirds cracked 4 bases-empty home runs off Forest City pitching to come back from a 7-2 deficit. Right fielder Nicky Swift had a pair for Belair Beach and catcher Denny Everhart one. Everhart also smacked a two-run double and drove in 3 runs. Third baseman Dom Corbelli was 3-for-4 and knocked in 2 runs for the winners. First baseman J. T. Edmonds led the Lumberjacks with a home run and a triple and 4 RBIs. Lou Zanelli picked up the victory with a scoreless 2-innings of relief, while Herm Bahr gained the loss, giving up 2 runs in the last 2 innings. 3 Rattlers Shutout Diamonds Sugar Valley vanquished Claxton 9-0 as three hurlers combined on a 4-hit shutout. Rattler starter Harvey Hines went the first three innings, but his arm stiffened up and he needed relief. Nicky Lynn went the next four frames and Gregg Neal finished off the Diamonds the last two innings. Lynn only gave up 1 hit in the outing and he notched the win. The Sugar Valley attack was led by Rudi Oliver and Ken Arnold with roundtrippers. Oliver had a 3-run homer and Arnold belted 2 hits and drove in 2 runs. The Rattlers have won two the the three games in the series so far. |

Monday, April 23, 2001 Tycobbina Baseball Union East Division Hellcats Blow Past Hurricanes Hartsdale powered their way past Cape Coral 8-3, rapping out 11 hits, 6 doubles and a 3-run homer by shortstop Francisco Abreu, his second of the season. The Hellcats also got good efforts from starter Jim Sears and closer Phil Reed. Sears registered the win and gave up 3 runs, only one earned, and 8 hits in 7 innings. Reed finished the game with 2 scoreless frames for the save. Loser Doug Lyons had a rocky outing and was belted for 6 runs in just 3 innings. Ninth-Inning Rally Wins It for Luxora South Fork fell apart late and were beaten 7-6 by Luxora on a bases-loaded double by left fielder Pedro Vizquel in the last of the ninth. The Zorros rallied from a 5-0 deficit with 3 runs in the eighth and 4 in the ninth. Starters Booger Burchfield and Fernando Fernandes dueled for the first seven frames with Fernandes and the Stallions holding the edge 1-0. But all of that unraveled in the last two innings. Luxora closer Roberto Martinez got the win, but gave up a run in the top of the ninth. The defeat went to Billy Joe Gordon. The Zorros were sparked by Vizquel, who had 3 hits and 4 RBIs, while Glenn Holliday paced South Fork with 3 hits and 3 runs scored and Carter Mitchell knocked in 3. Luxora's season record is 2-1, while South Fork is now 1-2. Ginza Gets by Ozarka The Ninjas won their first game of the year and gave the Naturals their first loss after two wins. Reliever Cody Moore put a stop to Ozarka in the ninth and nailed down Ginza's 6-4 triumph. Moore got the last two batters to put a quick end to a mild uprising. It was his first save this season. Winning pitcher Kojiro Matsumoto pitched a fine game for the Ninjas and gave up only 1 earned run in 7 innings, 3 in all. He outpitched Louie Ray, who yielded 3 runs and 6 hits in his 6 innings. Kenshin Yamamoto and Earl Conley paced the winners, each with a home run and 2 runs batted in . West Division La Claire Crushes Blue Lake Fine pitching and solid bats led La Claire to an easy victory 9-2 over the Blue Lake Blue Sox at Capitol Park Stadium. Three hurlers combined to beat the Blue Sox, holding them to 6 hits. Starter Jerry Smith got credit for the win, tossing 6 innings and surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits. Relievers Tony Nygaard and Andy Murray finished out the game and allowed the other two hits. Shortstop Dirk Lindahl and left fielder Rich Hart of the Lynx both slugged homers and drove in 3 and 2 runs respectively. Pete Henry absorbed the defeat, permitting 5 runs in 6 innings, although only 2 were earned. It was La Claire's second victory in a row after losing the season opener to Blue Lake. Bucs Batter Frogs Bay St. Clair combined an 18-hit barrage and good pitching by Gary Robinson to easily beat Fairfax 9-3 at the Frog Pond. Charlie Moon, Tony Mann and Jake Singleton each banged out 3 hits for the Bucs. Robinson permitted 13 hits, but walked none and fanned 7 in the win. The loss was pinned on Johnny Schuessler, who exited after 6 innings and yielded 5 runs and 9 hits. Frogs first sacker Stan Cobb had a perfect 5-for-5 day, including a homer and a double, but it wasn't enough. Bay St. Clair broke into the victory column for the first time this year after dropping the first two games of the series to Fairfax. Champs Slip by Viks, 8-7 Kris Gervais' 2-run single in the seventh gave Arlon a tight 8-7 victory over Bayview. Gervais, Jerry Keller and reliever Jeff Nieman led the Champions. Keller hammered his 3rd roundtripper and drove in 3 runs, while Nieman hurled a splendid 4 innings and allowed only one hit and no runs. Nieman garnered his first win this year. Manny Tettelbach was battered for 3 runs in the seventh and was charged with the defeat. It was the Vikings initial loss of the season after two wins. |

Tuesday, April 24, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union North Division Vipers Set IPA Records The Valmara Vipers completely destroyed the Elnora All-Stars at State Fair Park, breaking the IPA marks for most runs and most hits in the 19-3 massacre. Chuck Kowalczyk fanned 8 in a route-going performance for the club's fourth victory in a row. Jan Kazmarek, Floyd Vinson and Jan Szymanski were the Vipers big guns with 3 RBIs apiece. Even backup shortstop Mike Ellefsen got into the act with a grand slam in the ninth in his only at-bat. Valmara set records for 22 hits and 19 runs, breaking the old marks held by Claxton (19) and Marston (15). The Vipers and All-Stars also combined to set a new mark with 22 total runs between them. Claxton and Sugar Valley held the old record with 20 runs in a game. Valmara is still unbeaten this year and the Diamonds are winless in four games. Glasco's Darby Blanks Volusia The Glasco Athletics got an outstanding game out of 21-year-old righthander Charles Darby, who whitewashed Volusia 1-0 on 5 hits with 9 strikeouts. Shortstop Zach Byorvik delivered the winning blow with a second-inning homer. Leo Flores almost matched Darby except for the roundtripper. Flores went 7 strong innings and yielded only 5 hits. The A's have won three of the four games in the series at Athletics Field. Blasters Barely Beat Redhawks Colfax got its first win of the season, but it wasn't easy. The Blasters took a 7-1 lead after seven innings and almost didn't survive. Far Mountain mounted a 6-run explosion in the eighth and came close to pulling it out, but Robbie Smith set them down in order in the ninth for the save and the 8-7 win. Pat Lott and Vic Boldt led the Blasters attack. Lott had 2 hits and 3 RBIs, while Boldt had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Dennis Cole drilled his 2nd home run of the year for Colfax. The Redhawks roughed up Blaster pitchers for 18 hits, but wasted too many of them, especially in the first seven frames. Johnny Strickland was 3-5 with 3 RBIs and his 4th home run, Gerald Davis added 3-6 and 3 RBIs, including a roundtripper and Al Nixon chipped in 3 more hits -- but to no avail. Far Mountain's record fell to 3-1 on the year with Colfax improving to 1-3. South Division Unbeaten Marston Wins 5th Straight The Marston Nine are making it look easy so far in the Islandian Pro Alliance. They have registered five successive wins and are in first place in the Ruthlandian South Region. Cody Hill won his second game of the young season by whipping Waleska 8-2. Hill lasted into the eighth when he weakened and needed help from the bullpen. Jorge Bonilla got the last four outs for him. Smokey Joe Carter lost for the second time to Hill, allowing 4 runs and 9 hits in 6 innings. The top Nine hitters were Ken Green 3-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBIs and Johnny Berthold with a double and triple and a pair of RBIs. The Westerners have now lost all five games this season. BB Smacks 'Jacks 9-8 First baseman Nickie Gulino smashed a pair of home runs and drove in 5 runs to spark Belair Beach to a 9-8 victory over Forest City. The Sunbirds jumped out to an 8-0 lead and just managed to win it. Closer Lou Zanelli came in with the tying run on first and no outs and retired the Lumberjacks 1-2-3 to nail down the verdict and chalk up his first save of the year. Ricky Mitchell had quite a game for the 'Jacks with 4 RBIs and 3-for-4 at the plate. Neither starter was effective. 6'10" Slim Mosley was the winner, while Ernie Hill took the loss. The Sunbirds improved to a 3-1 record, while Forest City dipped to 1-3. SV Slaughters Claxton 15-6 All went well for the Sugar Valley Rattlers today at Farmers Memorial Park. They took the shine off of the Claxton Diamonds by overwhelming them 15-6, setting a new IPA mark for most runs in a game. A 13-hit rampage and nice pitching by southpaw Tony Michelet insured the victory. Karl Dietz and Jorge Vargas both drove in 3 runs to pace the offense with Freddie Vaux tossing in a two-run roundtripper and 2 RBIs. Michelet fired 8 innings and allowed only two runs and claimed the win. The two-team total of 21 runs also set a new league record. It was the Rattlers third win in four games against Claxton. |

Tuesday, April 24, 2001 Tycobbian Baseball Union East Division Hurricanes Batter Hellcats in 7-HR Game The Cape Coral Hurricanes hammered the Hillsdale Hellcats 14-8 today at Pioneer Park by rapping out 18 base hits. Cape Coral got the best of the longball battle by slamming 4 roundtrippers. Hillsdale put 3 out of the park. That set a new IPA homer mark of 7 in one game. Rob Kelly and Fats Dalton led the way with 3 RBIs apiece. Kelly was 5-for-5 in the game, the first IPA player to ever do that. Both Kelly and Dalton had homers in the game. Todd Seals slugged a pair for the Hellcats. Starter Kaz Hayagawa got the win, despite being the victim of a 6-run inning. None of the runs were earned. He exited in the seventh with the score 12-7. Reliever Cody Burg finished it out for him, holding Hillsdale scoreless the rest of the way. Roger Graves absorbed the loss as he was shelled for 8 runs in just 3 innings. The Hurricane win evened the five-game series at two apiece. Zorros Win On 9th-Inning Error South Fork's second baseman Ken Robbins committed 3 errors today with the last one costing them the game. Luxora got the winning run on a bad throw by Robbins to whip the Stallions 4-3. Tommy Fortunato led off the last of the ninth with a double and he scored on errant throw on Pedro Vizquel's ground ball. Three Zorro relievers combined to shutout South Fork over the last three innings with the victory going to Luis Gomez. Kyle Moss was the victim of the unearned run and suffered the loss. Starters Jamie Kelly of the Stallions and Chris Pierce of the Zorros pitched creditable ballgames. Kelly surrendered 3 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings of work and Pierce allowed 3 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings, but all of them were unearned. It was South Fork's third triumph in four tries against the Luxora. Ninjas Hart 6 Scoreless Innings Top Naturals The game at Ninja Stadium started off like a slugfest, but excellent relief work put a stop to it after three innings. Ginza's Buddy Hart took over from troubled Toshiya Tamura in the fourth frame with the score 6-4 and completedly stopped the Ozarka Naturals on just 2 hits in 6 outstanding innings. Hart was credited with the 7-4 victory. The Naturals relief corps, Donnie Young and Yasuyuki Nakagawa also stood out, allowing only one run after the third. The loser was starter Emile Leduc, who was blasted for 6 runs and 5 hits in the first three innings. Charlie Campbell and Kenshin Yamamoto were the offensive stars for the Ninjas with a homer each. Campbell drove in 3 runs and Yamamoto 2. Doug Cunningham hit a 3-run shot to pace Ozarka. The two clubs have split the first four games of the five-game series. West Division Lynx Krumholtz and Kishata Combine for Win The La Claire Lynx had a easy time with the Blue Lake Blue Sox knocking them off 8-1 at Capitol Park Stadium before a large crowd. Val Krumholtz notched the win by hurling 6 innings. The righthander put a lot of Sox on the basepaths by yielding 8 hits and walking 5 in 6 innings, but surrendered only 1 run. Blue Lake outhit the winners 9 to 8 in the game. Closer Monoto Kishata relieved with no outs and two runners in the seventh and shut down Blue Lake on just one hit and no runs to get credit for his first save of the season. Luis Marquez, third baseman for the Lynx, delivered the cinching blow with a grand slam in the 5-run seventh for their third win in a row. La Claire moved their season mark to 3-1, while the Blue Sox sunk to 1-3. Hunt Hurls 3-Hit Shutout Over Vikings Arlon righthander Ray Hunt blanked Bayview 4-0 on a superlative 3-hitter today at Derby Downs. Hunt went all the way, struck out 3 and walked none. The losing pitcher was Charlie Andrews for the Vikings, who gave up 5 hits and 2 runs in 5 innings. First sacker George Lyons topped the Champions with 2-for-3, including a 2-run homer. Shortstop Archie Berry added 3 hits to the Arlon attack. Hunt allowed only 3 singles in the game. The Champs victory knotted up the series at 2-2. Bucs Top Frogs 6-4, Nikorsky Saves It Lefty reliever Johnny Nikolsky saved the day for Bay St. Claire by holding the Fairfax Frogs scoreless over the final two innings. The Buccaneers won the game 6-4 with the win going to starter Ben Crowley, who struggled through 6+ innings, permitting 4 runs and 8 hits. Losing pitcher Mel Murray was ineffective in his first start of the year and was ripped for 6 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings, although 2 of them were unearned. A 5-run second frame put away Fairfax. Bay St. Clair outhit the Frogs 10 to 8, paced by right fielder Shoichi Tanaka with 3-4 and catcher Jake Singleton 2-3. Shortstop Hot Rod Patrick drove in 2 runs. Frog shortstop Warren Lee led them with 3-for-4. The series is now evened at 2 games each. |

Wednesday, April 25, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union North Division Valmara Sweeps Series from Elnora 3 runs in the twelfth inning enabled Valmara to eke past the Elnora All-Stars at State Fair Park 4-1 and take all five games of the series. The game was marked by fine pitching by both teams with Zarek Zalewski combining with Danny Blauser to fend off Elnora. Zalewski scattered 9 hits in 9 innings with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts, permitting only run run. Blauser came on in the tenth and twirled three scoreless frames and got his second win of the year. The All-Stars Tyrone Gray was sharp as a tack, tossing the first nine frames, allowed only one run and 6 hits with 6 Ks and 2 BBs. Troy Hudson was the victim of the twelfth-inning uprising and was the loser in the game. Mike Ellefson singled in the lead run, Louis Sharp chipped in some insurance with a 2-run single. Elnora is winless and in the North division basement thus far this year, while the Vipers are in the top spot and ahead of the pack in the early going. V's Balfour Beats A's on 4-hit Shutout Jesse Balfour of Glasco tossed a fine 4-hit shutout over Volusia today at Athletics Field. The power-pitching portsider blanked the Vigilantes 9-0 with 8 strikeouts and just 2 walks for his second successive triumph of this young season. He was supported by 4 home runs, a grand slam in the first inning by Lou McCarley and singletons by Lee McDougall, Ox Beauvais and Chet Reynolds. Volusia starter Raul Sandoval caught his second loss by permitting 5 runs and 5 hits and 2 homers in just 4 innings. Second place Glasco took 4 of the 5-game set and trail first place Valmara by a game. The Vigilantes are in the fifth spot in the standings, 4 games out. Colfax's Guidry Blanks FM Redhawks Flash Guidry was sensational in the Colfax 11-0 mauling of Far Mountain. The tough righthander permitted only 4 hits, while striking out 8 and walking only 2 Redhawks to even his record at 1-1. Not only did the Blasters get the pitching, they backed it well with a 13-hit barrage to easily rout Far Mountain. First baseman Dennis Cole blasted his third homer of the year and drove in four runs to lead the offense. The losing pitcher was Sonny Elliott (1-1). He was plagued by wildness and walked 9 batters in just 4 innings, giving up 3 hits and 5 runs, however, only 1 was earned. But Far Mountain claimed the series 3 games to 2 and are in third place behind Valmara and Glasco. The Blasters are in the fourth spot in the standings, three games off the pace. South Division Waleska Eases By Marston 5-3 The Waleska Westerners finally broke into the victory column this season. Big 6'6" Andrei Marsiske stood tall on the hill today with 4 sparkling innings of scoreless relief. That enabled Waleska to hold off the Marston Nine 5-3 in a game played at Westerner Field. The big righthander allowed 3 hits, fanned 3 and walked nobody to get his first save. Starter Joel Harrell got credit for the win, but had his hands full with 9 hits and 2 bases on balls in 5 innings. He gave up all three runs. Marston outhit the Westerners 12 to 8 but still came short. It was Waleska's only victory in the six-game series. The Nine are on top of the RBU South with a 5-1 mark. The Westerners are in last place and four games behind. Keith Green of the Nine hit homer #2 this season, while Waleska's left fielder Charley Williamson got his 2nd one, too. Sunbirds Thompson Sets Strikeout Mark with 12 At beautiful Bayside Park Belair Beach slipped by Forest City 3-2 in ten innings on the strong arm of Carl Thompson, who went all the way and notched his second victory of the season. Thompson, a lefthander, fanned a dozen Lumberjacks, yielded only 7 hits and walked only 2. Thompson set a new single-game strikeout total in the game. Battery mate Denny Everhart won it with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth. It was his 3rd of the year. Herb Bahr suffered the loss in relief, his second of the season. The Sunbirds won the series, four games to one. Belair Beach holds down the second spot in the division are a half-game out of first place. Forest City is fifth and trails Marston by 3.5 games. Diamonds Outslug Rattlers 9-6 The Claxton Diamonds ran up an 8-3 lead going into the eighth inning and held on to whip Sugar Valley 9-6 at Farmers Memorial Park. Claxton walloped 15 hits off Rattler pitching, led by Donny McCoy and Winky Rush with 3 hits each, while Dixie Baker, Marty McCluskey, Keith Olsen and Bobby Ritter numbered two hits apiece. McCoy and Baker smacked their second roundtrippers of the season. Sugar Valley had some heavy hitting, too, with 14 hits. The Rattlers were sparked by Timmy Bell with 3 hits and 4 RBIs, 4-for-4 for Freddy Vaux and Slingshot McFall was 3-for-4. The Diamonds set an IPA mark for most double plays in a game with 4, but they also committed 4 errors and tied the league record. The win was credited to Tetsunori Nakashima (1-1), who lingered around into the eighth and gave up 12 hits and 6 runs, 4 of them earned. Reliever Earl Weber earned the save by getting out of a bases-loaded ninth. Ron Benson (1-1) took the loss, surrendering 4 runs in 4 innings and departed trailing 4-0. Claxton gained the win today, but the Rattlers captured three of the five games between them in the opening series of the year. Sugar Valley is in third place and the Diamonds are in fourth. |

Wednesday, April 25, 2001 Tycobbian Baseball Union East Division Hellcats Griffin Tops 'Canes 6-2 Hartsdale took the opening series of the IPA first season with a 6-2 decision over Cape Coral. The Hellcats won the series at Pioneer Park three games to two with a fine outing by righthander Danny Griffin, who posted his first win of the year. He limited the Hurricanes to only 3 hits, struck out 9, while walking 4. Griffin lost on opening day 5-2, but he got plenty of run support today from catcher Nickie Griffin, who went 4-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, including his first homer of the season. Left fielder Mel Poe chipped in 3-4 and first baseman Walt Long delivered 2 hits in 4 tries and scored twice. Left fielder Eric Smith pace Cape Coral with 2-for-4 and a home run. Wally Robinson (1-1), who had beaten the Hellcats on opening day, succumbed the second time around. They slammed him for 11 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings. In all, Hillsdale rapped out 14 hits, including a new IPA record for doubles with 7. The Hellcats are tied for first with Luxora and Ozarka, all with 3-2 marks this year. Zorros Give Game to Stallions in 13th Shoddy defense ruined a splendid 13-inning battle. Two botched flyballs gave the South Fork Stallions a 4-3 victory over Luxora. Jerry Harrison (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless thirteenth. Mack Stewart and Ken Robbins led the South Fork hitters, each banging out a homer. Eric Richter lashed out 3 hits for the losing Zorros, who committed 4 errors for the day. Nontheless, Luxora grabbed 3 of the 5 games in the series. South Fork is tied for last place with Ginza and Cape Coral in the TBU East, but only one game off the pace. Nats Hatch Wins 2nd, Stops Ginza 8-2 Luther Hatch of Ozarka throws a lot of pitches and walks a lot of hitters, but he doesn't give up many runs. The little 5'9" righty won his second straight complete game, dumping the Ginza Ninjas on their home turf 8-2. Hatch throttled them on just 5 hits, fanned only 2 and walked 6. The Naturals backed him up with 4 roundtrippers - Duane Starr and Doug Cunningham each had 2-run blasts, while solo shots were hit by Rickey Simmons and Ronnie Patterson. Kazahiro Nakayama in a decent effort suffered his second loss to Hatch. He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings and had 7 strikeouts. It was 4-1 when he left the game. Ozarka won the series 3-2 on the road at Ninja Stadium. West Division Lynx Rebound Late for Tight Win Over Blue Sox Blue Sox starter Bennie West gave up the tying runs on 4 base hits in the sixth frame. Dennis Weiss and Darrell Boyce had RBI-singles in the inning to knot the score. The Lynx won it in the last of the eighth on a hitsbatsman, walk and a two-base throwing error by third baseman Dandy Wilson. West (1-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 8 hits in 7+ innings and all 4 runs, 3 of them earned. Nickie Baumgartner started for La Claire, but left after seven with the score tied 3-3. Reliever Frank Lamoreaux tossed 2 runless innings for the victory, his first of the season. The Lynx took the series 4-1 and are in first place in the TBU East, a game in front of the Arlon Champions and Fairfax Frogs. Champs Sink Vikings in 10 Innings Arlon came back at home in the late innings and won an extra-inning thriller 4-3 over Bayview. Champion pinchhitter Kris Gervais tied the score 3-3 in the ninth with a double and Jerry Keller won it in the tenth with a deep sac fly to center. Jeff Nieman captured his second win this season with a scoreless top of the tenth, while Manny Tettelbach (0-2) got hung with the defeat. Jerry Keller, the Champ center fielder, went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. Right fielder Glenn Burns was the Vikings best bat with a 3-6 day. The victory gave Arlon the series 3-2 and dropped Bayview into a tie for fourth place in the division, two games out. The Champs are tied for second place with Fairfax and trail leading La Claire by a game. Frogs Leap Over Bucs 5-4 A 2-run rally in the last of the seventh gave the homestanding Fairfax Frogs a 5-4 triumph over Bay St. Clair at the Pond. Pinchhitter Jay Callahan evened the score at 4 with a single and shortstop Scoop Estes pushed across the game-winner with another single. Both came off starter Norm Gross (0-1), who surrendered all 5 runs in 6 innings of work. Reliever Gerry Fischer retired the Bucs in order in the seventh for the win. Takehide Takahashi saved it for him with a scoreless eighth and ninth. Batting-wise catcher Marty McCoy had a perfect day at the plate for Fairfax, going 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Estes had a pair of hits and 2 RBIs. Second baseman Tony Mann went 3-4 to top Bay St. Clair hitters. The Frog victory was their third in the five-game set and put them in a second place tie with Arlon. The Bucs are tied for the fourth spot in the division standings. |

Thursday, April 26, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union North Division Colfax Gives Vipers 1st Loss The Blasters got strong pitching from Alex Castille (1-0) and closer Pat Langlais to nip the Valmara Vipers 4-3 at Mountain View Stadium in Colfax. It was the Vipers first loss this season after five wins. Castille stopped them on 4 hits and 3 runs, but needed help from Langlais in the eighth to get the final five outs. Valmara had cut the score to 4-3 with a two-run rally, when Langlais snuffed it out. Starter Todd Turner (1-1) of the Vipers deserved a better fate, he gave up all 4 runs, but only one was earned. He fanned 4 and walked no one in 6+ innings. A 3-run seventh did him in. Catcher Howie Peterson make it 2-1 with an RBI-single and left fielder Sammie Hawkins upped to 4-1 with a 2-run single. The Blasters are now even for the year with a 3-3 mark. FM Redhawks Dump Athletics 5-2 Far Mountain's Vic Vaux and Doc Rutledge teamed up to whip Glasco 5-2 at Athletics Field today, stopping them on 8 hits. Vaux (1-0) went the first 7.1 innings and checked the A's on 6 hits, then Rutledge came on and closed it out, holding them scoreless in the eighth and ninth to get his first save this season. The Redhawks banged out 13 hits in all to improve to a 4-2 record, 11 of them off loser Arnie McFalls (1-1), who gave up 5 runs in 6 innings. Far Mountain was paced by 1B Royce Benson with 3-4 and three players with a pair of hits each, C Dave Davis, SS Johnny Strickland and LF Joe Leroux. Glasco dipped to 4-and-2 on the year with the loss. Elnora Breaks 5-Game Losing Streak It took an outstanding mound performance by a tall and lanky lefthander to put an end to Elnora's 5-game losing streak. 6'6" Carl Costas (1-1) limited Volusia to just 4 singles in his 3-1 victory at State Fair Park. Costas walked 2 and fanned 4 to pick up the All-Stars first win ever in the IPA. He outdueled little 5'6" Pee Wee Cruz (0-2), who tossed 7 innings and gave up only 3 hits and 2 runs. Elnora only got 5 hits in all, but made the most of them. In the third, Will Jackson doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a fly ball, then scored the first run of the game, when Costas grounded out to third base. Three walks by Cruz put him in hot water with one out. Richie Franklin hit into a force out at second and pushed across the second run. The Vigilantes failed to complete the double play. Volusia cut the margin to 2-1 in the seventh when right fielder Art Atkins threw badly in an attempt to get Alejandro Salazar at home. A good throw would have gotten him. In the eighth Quincey Peterson's one-out single plated Harry Wright with the final run, making it 3-1. Both clubs are now 1-5 this season. South Division Marston Edges FC 6-5 It wasn't a thing of beauty, but Marston's Casey Ledbetter went the route and beat Forest City 6-5 at Riverside Stadium. He scattered 9 hits, walked none and fanned 3 to run his record to 2-0. Second baseman Ken Green led the Nine with 3-5, 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Shortstop Lenny Torricelli added 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Catcher Eddie Allen and right fielder Chris Deangelo chipped in solo home runs. Marston ran up a 6-3 lead in the seventh and withstood a Lumberjacks rally in the eighth. Brian Charles (1-1) suffered the defeat, rendering 7 hits and 6 runs in 7 innings. Charles had control problems and walked 7. Forest City left fielder Chuck Hill and third baseman J. T. Edmonds both slugged homers and drove in a pair of runs. It was the Nine's 6th victory in 7 games this year. Forest City dropped to 1-5. Oliver's 3-Run Smash Propels SV Timely hitting and excellent relief work sparked Sugar Valley to an 8-5 triumph over Belair Beach at Farmers Memorial Park. It was Rudi Oliver's 3-run roundtripper in the seventh that put the Rattlers ahead to stay. Gregg Neal (1-0) sparkling 3-innings of shutout ball played a very big part as well. Dan Garrett (0-2) took the loss for the Sunbirds as he yielded 7 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings. Sugar Valley won despite allowing three homers, two by Matty McDermott and one by Denny Everhart, his fourth of the season. McDermott had 3 hits and 3 RBIs, while Everhart was 3-3 with 2 RBIs. Jorge Vargas also homered for the Rattlers. He had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Sugar Valley improved their season record to 4-2, while Belair Beach fell to 4-2. Westerners Whip Diamonds 6-4 A big 4-run fifth ignited a 6-4 Waleska win at Westerner Field over the visiting Claxton Diamonds, highlighted by SS Wiz Taylor with an RBI single, a 2-run base hit by RF Big Hoss Burkhalter and run-scoring single by CF Rick Vaughn. Closer Jack Wagner came on in relief of starter Marv Chancellor in the seventh and proceeded to nail down the verdict, allowing only 1 run and 1 hit for the save. Chancellor (1-1) got credit for the win, going 6 frames and permitting 3 runs and 4 hits with 6 strikeouts, while walking 5. Burkhalter and Taylor both went 2-for-4 to pace Waleska. CF Vern Jennings was the Diamonds top hitter with a double and a homer in 3 at-bats and 2 RBIs. Pete Castellani (1-1) suffered the loss, surrendering 6 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings. On the year Claxton is 2 and 4 in the won-lost department, while Waleska is now is 2 and 5, having won their last two games. |

The Hellcats smacked 14 hits in the hit-fest, paced by Walt Long, Jesus Guzman, Francisco Abreu and Steve Ward, all of them bashed out 3 hits. Hartsdale blasted 4 homers, one each by Guzman, Abreu, Mel Poe and Nickie Griffin. 3 runs in the eighth and 2 in the ninth put away Luxora. Tom Fortunato went 2-for-5, including a 3-run home run for the Zorros. In a rocky outing Glenn Mann (1-0) garnered the win for the Hellcats with an inning of help from Gene Young. Luxora starter Johnny Montel (0-2) lost for the second time this season, allowing 5 runs and 10 hits in six innings. Hartdale upped their record to 4-2, good enough for the top spot in the Tycobbian Baseball Union East race. With the loss the Zorros are now even at 3-3. 'Canes Wooten Homer Twice, Beat Naturals Roger Wooten, first sacker for Cape Coral cracked 2 homers in the Hurricanes 5-4 win over Ozarka, but it was shortstop Andy Anderson who delivered the death blow, a 2-run homer in the fifth inning. Wooten was 3-4 with 3 RBIs in the game. The Naturals CF Teddy Braun topped his club with 3 hits and 2 runs scored. Righthander Gary Fountain (1-0) got the victory in a creditable start. He went 8 innings, gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and struck out 5. Lefthanded closer Katsuyuki Nagashima gained his first save this season with a runless ninth. Tony Didriksen (0-1) got the loss. The 'Canes whacked him for 5 runs in 6 innings. Both clubs are now even for the year with 3 wins and 3 losses. They are tied for second place in the TBU East and trail Hartsdale by a game. SF Stallions Grand Slam Ginza The hitters had it their way in the game today at Ninja Stadium in Ginza -- but the visiting Stallions from South Fork got the best of it. They did it in grand style, too, with 2 grand slams and a 10-7 victory. 2B Ken Robbins nailed one in the opening frame to send South Fork off to a 5-0 lead. The Ninjas closed the score to 6-5 with a 5-run fourth, but then LF Paul Giles drilled the eventual game-winner with the bases loaded in the sixth, giving the Stallions a 10-5 margin. Both Giles and Robbins tied the mark for most RBIs in a game with 5 and now share it with Nickie Gulino of Belair Beach. 2B Hirokazu Kobayashi paced Ginza with 3 RBIs. 8 pitchers were used in the runfest, 6 by Ginza. SF starter Flint Battle (2-0) labored through 7 innings, but got the win with help from Kyle Moss. Vic Rousakis (0-1) was the losing pitcher, lasting only one inning. West Division LC Lynx Win Opener Over BSC Bucs La Claire won their fifth game in six tries this season with a 3-run uprising in the last of the eighth inning to subdue Bay St. Clair 7-4 at Capitol Park Stadium. Darrell Boyce broke the 4-4 tie with a double and Al Tisak singled across two more to clinch it. In relief Frank Lamoreaux (2-0) chalked up his second win by getting the last eight outs of the game. CF Jerry Keller led Arlon with 2 hits and 2 RBIs and 1B George Lyons provided a solo home run. Fairfax center fielder Gregg Vincent had a 2-run roundtripper and left fielder Gator Davis slapped a solo shot. The Champions rung up victory number four this year. They have lost twice, a record good enough for second place in the TBU West. Arlon is now one game off the pace of first place La Claire. Fairfax is 3-3 and two games behind. Bayview Bombs Blue Sox The Bayview Vikings tore into Blue Lake pitching to the tune of 16 hits and waltz off with an easy 14-5 victory before a delighted crowd at Downtown Plaza Stadium. Left fielder Gerry Mason had quite a day at the plate with 3-for-3 with a homer, double and 6 RBIs, a new IPA mark. There were many other hitting stars -- 2B Skip Daniels was 3-5 with 3 runs scored, RF Glenn Burns 2-4 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs and 3B Alan Hansen 2-2 with 3 runs and an RBI. On the mound relievers Fred Snow and Buzzy Lewis protected the huge lead by blanking the Blue Sox over the last 5 frames. Paul Hood (1-0), in relief of starter Mike Jardoin, benefited from the great run support, pitched one inning and got credit for the win, in spite of allowing a run. Jardoin couldn't stand the prosperity, lasted only 3 innings and gave up 4 runs and 4 hits, leaving with score 5-4 in his favor. The Vikings closed out the day at 3 wins and 3 losses in the TBU West, while Blue Lake continues to stumble with a dismal 1-5 mark. |

After the first week of play in my first league ever with OOTPB 2007, I really am enjoying it.
I have only run test leagues up to now, just to proof news and check out statistical results -- never for fun. It really is a great game...far better than I expected. I have even seen players dropping throws for the first time in my OOTPB history. :):):) I also saw an infielder drop a pop fly for the first time ever in my OOTPB history. :):):) Now if only the LF, RF, SS and 2B catch some foul balls, that will just about give the game all of the basic plays in baseball. |

Ruthlandian Baseball Union North Division All-Stars Best Vigilantes At State Fair Park Stevie Howard strolled in from the bullpen in the seventh with Elnora on top of Volusia 7-5. He proceeded to strike out 5 of the 9 batters he faced to get his first save this year. The All-Stars knocked off the Vigilantes 8-5 with the victory going to Sean Sykes (1-0), who struggled through 6 innings, allowing 5 runs and 8 hits. Volusia's Hank Massey (1-1) was pinned with the loss as he was banged around for 7 runs and 11 hits in 6 innings of work. 2B Gil Foster put Elnora over the top with a 2-run homer in the sixth, making the score 7-5. CF Harry Wright finished the scoring with a solo shot in the eighth. All total the All-Stars belted out 14 hits with Foster and LF Quincy Peterson getting 3 each. 1B Alejandro Salazar slugged one out of the park for the V's. Elnora raised their season record to 2-5 and are in fifth place and Volusia fell to 1-6 and last in the Ruthlandian Baseball Union North race. Glasco Massacres Far Mountain Glasco got the biggest inning in IPA history today at Athletics Field. They scored 9 runs in the eighth inning to rout the Far Mountain Redhawks 16-5. They had the benefit of 15 hits and a recording-setting 10 walks and 6 errors by Far Mountain. The A's attack was led by Ox Beauvais with 3-4 and 4 RBIs, Lee McDougall 3-6 and Scotty McPherson 3-4. McDougald and Beauvais each homered in the game. Glasco led only 7-5 going into the record-setting inning. Kenny Metcalf evened his record on the year at 1-1 as he worked into the seventh before being relieved by Ray Cook. Metcalf was tagged for 5 runs and 7 hits, while Cook stopped the Redhawks cold in his 2+ innings. He struck out 4 batters and got his first save. Far Mountain took an early lead and led 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth. The Athletics jumped on reliever Vincent Moore for 4 runs and were never headed again. With the victory Glasco moves up to second place with a 5-2 seasonal mark. The Redhawks are now 4-3 and in the third place spot. Vipers Win in 10 over Blasters It was an up-and-down game for Valmara on the road at Coldfax's Mountain View Stadium. The Vipers leaped ahead 6-1 in the first four frames, only to see the Blasters deadlock it at 6-6 after six. Valmara cashed in on Robby Smith's 3 walks in the top of the tenth to win 7-6. The winning run came in on a passed ball by catcher Howie Peterson. In relief Andre Trepanier (1-0) fired 2-hit ball over 3 innings for the win with help from Zarek Zalewski in the ninth. Zalewski is a regular starter, but was called into duty by Viper manager J. Jackson Samuel. Smith (0-1) caught the loss for Colfax. Valmara's offense was provided by first baseman Rickey O'Reilly, shortstop Mike Ellefson and catcher Yoshi Motsuzuki. All of them homered and had 2 RBIs apiece. The Vipers are in first place in the RBU North with a 6-1 record. Colfax is now 3-4 and in fourth place in the division standings. South Division Morse and 'Jacks Stun Marston with Walk-Off HR Bob Lowe (1-1) was cruising along into the ninth with a 4-3 lead, but then the roof caved in. The Marston hurler gave up two homers and fell to Forest City 6-4. With one away first baseman Ricky Mitchell tied it with a solo shot. Lowe got the second out, but gave up a single to pinchhitter Karl Labrie. Then lead-off hitter, Ryan Morse stunned everybody at Riverside Stadium with a 2-run walk-off homer to win the game. After giving up 3 runs to the Lumberjacks in the first inning on a Chuck Hill homer, Lowe shut them out over the next seven. It was his first loss this season. The winning pitcher was Herm Bahr, who relieved starter Gene Stuart with one out in the seventh, trailing 4-3. He stopped the Nine the rest of the way. Bahr is now 1-2 on the season. Catcher Mo Chappell led the Marston attack with a double and single in 3 at-bats and 3 RBIs. First place Marston's record dipped to 6-2, while last place Forest City improved to 2-5. Wilson, Zanelli Combine to Beat Rattlers Sunbird skipper Marty Pedrosa was proud of his pitchers today as Troy Wilson (1-0) and Lou Zanelli combined to scatter 8 hits in the 4-1 decision over Sugar Valley. Wilson tossed 7 innings and checked the Rattlers on 1 run and 7 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Zanelli got his second save with two scoreless innings. Loser Harvey Hines (0-1) went the distance for Sugar Valley and yielded a dozen hits, but only 3 earned runs. In the 2-run fifth Denny Everhart tied the game at 1-1 with a double and Marty McDermott put Belair Beach in front for good with an RBI-single. Erik Kesler finished out the scoring with a 2-run double in the eighth. Sugar Valley only run came on a lead-off homer by Jorge Vargas in the first frame. The second place Sunbirds have won 5 and dropped 2 this season. The Rattlers stand at 4-3 and hold the number three spot in the RBU South division. Westerners Rally Late, Whip Diamonds 8-7 Two of the best managers in the IPA matched wits today at Westerner Field and McGraw Johnson's Westerners staged a late-inning comeback to beat Stacy Engel's Claxton Diamonds 8-7. Waleska tied it up at 7-7 with a 4-run eighth, then won it in the last of the ninth, when losing pitcher Chris Gallagher (0-1) couldn't handle an easy toss at first. Johnson used one of his starting rotation in relief. Smokey Joe Carter (1-2) pitched a scoreless ninth to get the victory. Both clubs swatted 12 hits each in the game. LF Charley Williamson got his 3rd homer of the season and paced the Westerners with 4-for-5 and 2 RBIs. He scored 3 times. RF Dixie Baker clubbed his 3rd home run and drove in 2 for the Diamonds. Johnson's Westerners are fourth so far with a 3-5 record and Engel's Claxton club is tied for the basement and has a 2-5 mark. |

The little 5'7" righthander chalked up his second straight win this season by stopping South Fork 4-1 on a 6-hitter. The junkballer walked 5 and fanned only 2 as he finessed his way past the Stallions. The Ninjas were sparked offensively by shortstop Shinjiro Aoki with 2 hits in 5 tries, including a 2-run triple. Right fielder Charley Campbell and left fielder Earl Conley drove in the other two runs. Both teams find themselves in the division basement at 3-4, two games behind the TBU East leader, the Hartsdale Hellcats. Hellcats Roar Back on Abreu's 3-Run HR Francisco Abreu's 3-run blast in the top of the eighth put Hartsdale ahead 6-3, but his skipper Zim Donner had to endure some shaky relief pitching before the Hellcats managed to hold off the plucky Luxora Zorros 6-5 at De la Vega Stadium. The Z's had a lot of opportunities to break the game open as they left 13 runners on base. In the late innings Phil Reed tried hard to give them the game, permitting 3 hits and 2 walks in 1+ inning. Reed (2-0) was the winning pitcher, while starter Francisco Fernandes (0-1) went down to defeat. The 6'6" southpaw allowed 6 runs in 7 innings. Gene Young labored, but survived several serious threats in the last two frames. It was his first save this season. West Division Lynx Pounce On Bucs 9-4 Hitting was the order of the day for La Claire as the Lynx lashed out 13 hits in a 9-4 romp over Bay St. Clair. 3B Luis Marquez and 2B Darrell Boyce hammered 2-run homers to pace the La Claire attack. 1B Al Tisak also drove in 2 runs. On the mound Jerry Smith (2-0) was adequate, going the distance, while allowing 9 hits. It was his second successive victory. Gary Robinson (1-1) toiled in defeat for the Buccaneers and was belted for 5 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings, but only 2 were earned. The Lynx kicked their season mark up 6-1 and hold the top spot by two games in the TBU West race. Bay St. Clair's record is 2-5 and the Bucs are in last place. Dalton Twirls 5-Hitter, Frogs Beat Arlon Young Jimmy Dalton (1-0) was the whole show at the Frog Pond in Fairfax as he tamed Arlon 4-2 for his first IPA victory. The 23-year-old lefty stopped the Champs on just 5 hits, fanned 4 and walked nobody in a very impressive outing. Center fielder Gregg Vincent provided all the runs he needed with a 3-run blast in the first inning. Shortstop Warren Lee added a solo roundtripper for the Frogs in the fifth. Both of them came off losing pitcher Erik Fitrakis (0-1), who was tagged for 5 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings. Both clubs have compiled identical 4-3 records in the Tycobbian Baseball Union West this season and are in second place, two games off the pace of the first place La Claire Lynx. Blue Sox Bomb Viks with 5 HRs 5 homers and 15 hits made it easy for Blue Lake as they bombed Bayview 10-4. The Blue Sox were led by 1B Fred Taranto with 3 hits, including a pair of home runs and LF Donnie Frazier with a home run among his 3 hits. 2B Ken Bennett and 3B Timmy Smith also hit roundtrippers. Pete Henry (1-1) went 5 innings for his first win this season. He gave up 2 runs and 6 hits and left because of a rain delay. Jesus Carvajal (0-1) lost it, being shelled for 4 runs in 2 innings. It was Blue Lake's second win this year against 5 losses. Bayview is 3-4. Saturday, April 28, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union RBU North Division Darby Fires Another Shutout Young lefthander Charles Darby (2-0) of the Glasco Athletics fired his second successive shutout and blanked Far Mountain 3-0 on 5 hits, struck out 7 and walked just 1 in another superlative outing. A's skipper McDuffie Hughes say the stocky 21-year-old pitcher is pure magic on the mound. "I've never seen such poise in a youngster in all my years in baseball." The Redhawks got a good start from John Luzzatti (0-1), who yielded only 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings. Luzzatti allowed no earned runs in the defeat. Glasco's first sacker Lou McCarley banged out 3 hits in 4 at-bats and drove in 2 runs. Second baseman Barry McCord went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Glasco improved to 6-2 on the year, while Far Mountain dropped to 4-4 in the RBU North race. The A's are tied for first in the RBU North with the Valmara Vipers. The Redhawks are in third place tie with the Colfax Blasters. Vipers Manning Stops Blasters Valmara's stylish lefty Harry Manning fashioned a fine 5-3 victory over Colfax at the Diamonds home field at Mountain View Stadium. He tossed a 4-hitter for his first win of the season. A 4-run outburst in the fourth, highlighted by Pat Lott's base-clearing bases-loaded double, put the Vipers in the winner's circle. Chuck Kowalczyk (1-1) sustained the loss, allowing 4 runs and 5 hits in 4 innings. Manning (1-0) gave up only 1 earned run, struck out 3 and issued 5 bases on balls. Valmara pushed their record to 6-2 to tie the Glasco Athletics for the top position in the RBU North. Colfax dipped to 4-4 and remained in the third spot, tied with the Far Mountain Redhawks. All-Stars Sneak by Vigilantes 4-3 For the second day in a row Stevie Howard got the call from the bullpen and for the second straight day he did his job -- he saved the game for Elnora. The All-Stars sneaked by Volusia at home 4-3. Quincy Peterson and Art Atkins both belted 2-run homers to account for the scoring and manager Zoggy White got some excellent relief pitching from Wally Tidwell and Howard. They held the Vigilantes scoreless over the last 3 innings. The victory went to starter Troy Hudson (1-1), who hurled 6 innings, gave up 5 hits and 3 runs. Lee Flores (0-2) went the route for Volusia and lost another game. He allowed 7 hits, 4 runs, fanned 3 and walked 2. The V's center fielder Domingo DeLeon went 2-for-5, including a home run. Fifth place Elnora ran their record to 3-5 on the year in the RBU North Division, while cellar-dwelling Volusia continued to struggle at 1-7. RBU South Division FC Pounds Marston Nine The Forest City Lumberjacks made the Riverside Stadium crowd happy today with an easy 10-4 triumph over the first place Marston Nine. The 'Jacks unleashed a 14-hit barrage with Pops Keller, Chuck Hill, Ryan Morse and Jesse Wolf leading the attack. Keller drove in 4 runs, Hill 3 and Wolf 2. Morse slammed a homer, had 4 hits in 5 tries and scored 4 times. Forest City got decent pitching, too, from Ernie Hill (1-1). The young 21-year-old southpaw pitched a complete game, scattering 9 hits, permitting 4 runs, fanning 4 and walking 3. Only 3 runs were earned. For the season first place Marston falls to 6-3 in the RBU North Division and fifth place Forest City improved to 3-5. Rattlers Rip Sunbirds 14-7 Sugar Valley didn't outhit Belair Beach, but they certainly made the most of their hits to win in a runaway 14-7. The Rattlers had 14 hits to the Sunbirds 15, but they had 7 extra base hits to only 2 for Belair Beach. LF Paul Winston headed the list of hitters with 3-3, including 2 doubles, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored, RF Karl Dietz had 3 doubles, a new IPA record, and 2 RBIs and 3B Jorge Vargas went 3-for-5, scored 4 and drove in one. Top batters for the Sunbirds were CF Marty McDermott 3-5 and 3 runs scored, 2B Rick Sullivan 3-5, 2 RBIs and 2 runs and Danny Church 2-5 with 2 RBIs. Ricky Fox(1-0) got the win, but it was a struggle. He gave up 7 runs on 14 hits before being relieved with two outs in the ninth by Jay Washington. Belair Beach got to him for 5 runs in the final three frames. Slim Mosley (1-1) took the loss and was gone by the second inning, being ripped for 6 runs. Both clubs are tied for the number two spot in the RBU South standings with 5-3 records. Westerners Carter Blanks Claxton Waleska's Smokey Joe Carter had his stuff working well today and he crafted a 3-0 shutout victory over the Claxton Diamonds at Westerner Field. Carter (2-2) blanked them on 7 hits, while fanning 3 and walking 2. Home runs accounted for all of the Westerners runs. SS Wiz Taylor hit a one-run shot in the third and 2B Yoshihide Nishida smacked a 2-run job in the fifth, both off losing pitcher Terry Kuznetzov (0-2). In the RBU South race Waleska is now 4-5 and Claxton is 2-6. The Westerners are in fouth place, while the Diamonds are in the basement. |

Saturday, April 28, 2001 Tycobbian Baseball Union TBU East Division 3 HR for Betancourt, CC Slugs Nats 13-7 What a game Roberto Betancourt had at Seaside Stadium in Cape Coral. The hard-hitting Hurricane second basement had a record-setting day with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs, both new IPA marks. That made it easy for Cape Coral to defeat the Ozarka Naturals 13-7. Kaz Hayagawa (2-0) ran out of gas at the end, but manage to get credit for the win, although surrendering 7 runs on 10 hits. Only 4 of the runs were earned. Scotty Lohmeyer got the final two outs of the game. Loser Emile Leduc (0-2) continues to struggle as he gave up 8 runs in less than 4 innings. Both teams are 4-4 for the season. They are tied with Ginza and Luxora for second place in the TBU East, one game behind first place Hartsdale. Zorros Zap Hellcats 7-4 Luxora got a good effort from Chris Pierce to get the best of the Hartsdale Hellcats 7-4. Pierce worked 6 innings and held the Hellcats to 2 runs and 4 hits before being removed for a pinchhitter with the score 7-2. Shaky relief from Roberto Martinez narrowed it to 7-4 in the eighth inning. Luis Gomez came in and got out of a bases-loaded jam, then retired Hartsdale 1-2-3 in the ninth. Three solo roundtrippers from Paul Hallenbeck, Claudio Ordonez and Eric Richter sparked the Zorros victory. Richter has a perfect 4-4 day. Roger Graves (0-2) caught the loss as he was rapped for 4 runs and 6 hits in just two innings. The Hellcats hold the top spot in the TBU East race with a record of 5-3 and Luxora is tied for second with Cape Coral, Ozarka and Ginza. All are 4-4 and trail Hartsdale by a game. Ninjas Win Pitcher's Duel 2-1 Over Stallions Ginza only got 4 hits in the game, but they made the most of them with a 2-1 decision over South Fork. Southpaw Toshiya Tamura (1-0) outpitched a trio of Stallion pitchers. He was touched for 9 hits, but spread them out enough to whip them. Tamura had 7 strikeouts and 3 walks in the win. Jamie Kelly started and gave up only 3 hits and a run in 6 innings. He departed for a pinchhitter in the seventh with the score tied a 1-all. Billy Joe Gordon lost it in the last of the seventh when the first batter he faced, Takashi Fujimoto cranked it into the stands for the deciding run. The Ninja first baseman also drove in a run in the fourth. Ginza evened its season mark at 4-4 and is tied for second in the TBU East standings with Ozarka, Luxora and Cape Coral. South Fork plummeled to 3-5 and rests last in the division, 2 games behind leading Hartsdale. TBU West Division 5 Runs in 7th Wins It for Lynx La Claire broke open a 2-2 ballgame with 5 runs in the eighth to dump Bay St. Clair 7-2. Wildness on the part of reliever Johnny Nikolsky led to the Buccaneers demise. A hit-batsman and 2 walks filled the bases with no outs to set the stage for Darrell Boyce to clear the bases with a double. The Lynx added two more scores before Ken Kazak could get them out. Portsider Andy Murray (1-0) secured the win with two scoreless frames. La Claire starter Nick Pilsner allowed 11 hits in 7 innings, but pretty much kept Bay St. Clair off the scoreboard. Bucs starter Ben Crowley pitched well with 7 Ks in 7 innings, 8 hits and only 2 runs. Nikolsky (0-1) got the loss. The La Claire Lynx are on top of the TBU West Division with 7 wins in 8 games thus far this season. The Bucs are 2-6 and in a last place tie with Blue Lake. Frogs Hang On to Beat Champs 6-5 Fairfax bent, but didn't break as they edged Arlon 6-5 at the Frog Pond. Winning pitcher Mel Murray (1-1) was sailing along with a 6-2 lead going into the ninth, when he wavered badly and gave up 3 runs. But closer Takehide Takahashi put a stop to the rally and got his second save of the season. The Frogs were led by CF Gregg Vincent, who hammered a homer and a triple to drive in 3 runs. He now has 5 home runs for the year, the most in the IPA. 1B Stan Cobb also chipped in a solo shot. The Champions had 3 homers, one each by CF Jerry Keller, LF Matt Murrill and 1B George Lyons. Keller has hit 4 into the stands this year. Lefthander Pete Edgar (0-1) hurled 5 innings and allowed 5 hits and 4 runs to get the defeat. Fairfax is in the second spot in the TBU West with a mark of 5-3, two games behind La Claire. Arlon has put up 4-4 record and is in third place with Bayview. Viks Wells Whips Blue Sox 5-3 Righthander Frank Wells of the Bayview Vikings whipped Blue Lake 5-3 today at a full house at Downtown Plaza Stadium. Wells (2-0) went the distance and checked the Blue Sox on 7 hits, while he whiffed 2 and walked 4. Losing pitcher Travis Gallagher (0-1) also pitched the entire game and gave up a dozen hits. 1B Dwayne Coleman was a big thorn for Gallagher as he slammed a pair of homers and drove in 3 runs for the Viks. Coleman has belted 4 out of the park this season so far. SS Shorty Richards went 3-4 and got the other 2 RBIs. In the TBU West Division race Bayview is all even at 4-4 and Blue Lake is now 2-6. The Vikings are tied for fourth with Arlon, 3 games back of first place La Claire. The Blue Sox are stuck in the cellar with Bay St. Clair, 5 games behind. |

Sunday, April 29, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union RBU North Division ZZ Zips Colfax 3-0 In a seemingly effortless performance Zarek Zalewski (2-0) of Valmara blanked Colfax 3-0 at Mountain View Stadium in the first game of a twinbill. ZZ shackled the Blasters on 4 hits, walked none and struck out 4 to gain his second victory of the season. He saw his ERA dropped to a very impressive 0.64. Colfax's Flash Guidry (1-2) had the misfortune of going up against him and suffered his second loss this year, despite his 1.38 ERA. Guidry went the distance, too, allowing only 3 runs and 7 hits with 7 Ks and 2 bases on balls. The Vipers got all the runs they needed in the fourth frame when center fielder Jan Szymanski jacked a 2-run homer, his 3rd this season. Shortstop Mike Ellefson doubled in the other run in the sixth. Vipers Sweep Blasters Valmara, the top team in the Ruthlandian Baseball Union North Division, got another fine pitching performance and swept two from the Colfax Blasters. A big 6-5 southpaw Gerry Bart (1-0) checked them on 8 hits in a 3-1 victory. Bart fanned 4 and issued only 2 walks. Jeff Cook did the only damage with a solo roundtripper in the fifth. Viper third sacker Matt Muzurek delivered the decisive blow in the fifth inning with a 2-run homer, his first of the year. That was enough to send Joe Andrews (1-1) down to his first defeat. Andrews went 7 innings and was touched for 6 hits and 2 runs. With the double wins today Valmara (8-2) remains on top of the RBU North Division, while Colfax (4-6) is in the fourth spot, 4 games out of first place. Redhawks Win Opener from A's Far Mountain was outhit 12 to 7 by Glasco, but still won the game 4-2. Winning pitcher Sonny Elliott (2-1) was tough with men on base and weathered just about every threat until he ran out of gas in the ninth. Elliott walked only 2 and fanned 7 in a gutsy performance. He got good relief from Doc Rutledge, who got him out of a serious jam in the ninth. With one run in and the tying runs on first and second, Rutledge stuck out Jose Valenzuela and retired Lloyd Windham on a grounder to get his second save of the year. The Redhawks top batters were CF Hank Gallagher and 3B Al Nixon, who drove in 2 runs apiece. Four Athletics got all 12 hits - CF Chet Reynold was 4-5, RF Valenzuela 3-4, LF Ox Beauvais 2-3 and Zach Byorvik 3-4. Jesse Balfour (2-1) suffered from shoddy defense as Glasco committed 3 errors and cost him 3 unearned runs. It was Balfour's first loss this season. He struck out 3, walked 2 and allowed 4 runs in 7 innings. Glasco Gains Split with FM 6-3 Big 6-6 Ernie McCain rose to the occasion and gained a split of the twinbill with Far Mountain. He only allowed one earned run - two were unearned -- in the 6-3 triumph. In his first start of the season McCain (1-0) yielded 7 hits, whiffed 6 and issued only 2 free passes. Offensively 2B Barry McCord sparked the A's with 2 hits, including a 2-run homer. RF Jose Valenzuela drove in 3 runs and had 2 hits. Denny Arthur (0-1) got a rude awakening in his first start and was routed in the second inning after giving up 5 runs and 5 hits. He was the losing pitcher. Glasco (7-3) fell into second place in the RBU North with the split. The Athletics are now one game behind the first place Valmara Vipers (8-2). The Redhawks (5-5) are in third place, three games off the pace. Sandoval Stops All-Stars 5-1 Vigilante lefty Raul Sandoval hurled his club past Elnora in the opener of a doubleheader at State Fair Park. Sandoval (1-2) crafted an impressive 5-1 victory, stopping the All-Stars on 7 hits with 9 strikeouts and only 2 walks. Volusia's 12-hit attack was paced by catcher JoJo Nunez, who collected 3 hits in 5 tries and scored twice. 2B Alejandro Salazar was 2-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBIs. The losing pitcher was Ted Gray (1-2), who tossed another good game, but came up on the short end of the score. He gave up 3 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings. V's Take Pair from Elnora The Volusia Vigilantes humbled Elnora 12-5 in the second game to take both ends of the twinbill. The V's offense was sparked by 3B Bennie Anderson, who racked up 3 hits and batted in 6 runs and by backup catcher Jorge Rosado with a 3-run homer and a triple among his 3 hits. He drove in 5 runs. LF Alex Luna and 1B Alejandro Salazar scored 4 times each. Pee Wee Cruz (1-2) blanked the All-Stars for 6 frames, but caved in in the seventh and was raked for 4 runs. Cruz did get the win with the save going to Carlos Romero. Elnora's Carl Costas (1-2) picked up the loss. In 6 innings he allowed 5 runs and 6 hits. With the split Volusia (3-7) and Elnora (3-7) remained deadlocked for last place in the RBU North Division. The clubs are 5 games behind the pace-setting Valmara Vipers (8-2). RBU South Division Benson Blanks BB in Opener Sugar Valley's Ron Benson (2-1) really zeroed in on Belair Beach in the opening game of two at Farmers Memorial Park. The Rattler righthander blanked the Sunbirds 3-0 on a 6-hitter and struck out 10. In doing so Benson dealt Carl Thompson his first defeat of the season. Thompson worked 7 innings and gave up all 3 runs on 7 hits. He fanned 5 and walked 1. 2B Rudi Oliver tripled in the first run in the second inning, SS Flipper Bird doubled in the second score in the third and Benson singled in the last one in the seventh. Rattlers Take Twinbill from Sunbirds The Sugar Valley Rattlers won a close one from Belair Beach to win both ends of the Sunday doubleheader to take over the top spot in the RBU South race. Phil Howard (1-0) and Gregg Neal teamed up for the 4-3 victory. Howard tossed 8 good innings, struck out 8 batters, walked 3 and permitted only 3 runs and 7 hits. Neal came in and registered his 2nd save this year with a scoreless ninth. The Rattlers rattled the boards with 13 hits, but didn't do a lot of damage. Cy Bartz had a 2-run blast in the second inning. Rudi Oliver and Slingshot McFall drove in the other two runs. SS Danny Church was just about all the offense the Sunbirds could find. He went 3-4 with 2 solo homers. Dirk Garrett (0-3) lost his third staight start. He departed after 3 innings after allowing 4 runs on 7 hits. The Rattlers (7-3) have won three in a row and climbed 1.5 games ahead of second place Marston (6-5), who have lost their last four. Belair Beach (5-5) is tied for third with Forest City (5-5). Hutchinson Halts Marston 8-0 in First Game Forest City's Buddy Hutchinson (1-1) copped the first game of a twinbill with Marston, blanking them 8-0. In a strong outing he checked them on 7 hits, struck out 4 and walked only 2. Backed up by 11 hits, the Lumberjacks had an easy time of it. SS Pops Keller slapped out 3-5, scored twice and homered. CF Ryan Morse drilled a pair of base hits and plated 2 runs to led Forest City. Nine starter Nick Pace (1-2) took it on the chin, took the loss and was gone in the third after surrendering 5 runs and 6 hits. 'Jacks Shutout Nine Twice in Twinbill In the nightcap 22-year-old southpaw Brian Charles picked up right where Buddy Hutchinson left off and also shut out the Marston Nine -- and he did it by the same score 8-0. Charles (2-1) fanned 7 on the way to a 3-hit shutout. Forest City started the game with back-to-back homers by Ryan Morse and Benny Davis and got a 3-run shot by Chuck Hill in the second inning to go up 7-0 and never looked back. Losing pitcher Eric Vogler (0-1) lasted only one inning in his first start this season. It was the Lumberjacks fourth consecutive victory over Marston. The Nine have now fallen out of first place in the RBU South with a a 6-5 record, 1.5 games behind Sugar Valley (7-3). Forest City moved up to a third place tie with Belair Beach, both are 5-5. Claxton Clubs Waleska 9-5 in Opener The Claxton Diamonds pounded out 15 hits on the road to whip Waleska 9-4 in the first game of a doubleheader. RF Dixie Baker led the attack with 3-5, including his 4th home run of the year, 3 RBIs and 3 runs. 2B Donny McCoy had a perfect 3-for-3 day with 3 RBIs and LF Winky Rush was 2-5 with 2 runs batted in. On the hill Tetsunori Nakashima (2-1) labored but went the distance, in spite of giving up a dozen hits. The 28-year-old righthander fanned 5 and walked just 2. Losing pitcher Joel Harrell (1-2) departed in the sixth, after he was ripped for 9 hits and 7 runs. 2B Yoshihide Nishida topped the Westerners at bat with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. He tagged his second roundtripper of the season in the ninth. Westerners Gain Split with Diamonds Waleska blew a 4-2 sixth-inning lead, but rebounded with 3 in the last of the eighth to gain a split of the doubleheader with Colfax. The Westerners won the game 7-5, belting out 11 hits and 2 home runs. RF Big Hoss Burkhalter and CF Milt Carlson delivered the homers and drove in a pair of runs each. 1B Timmy Ballard had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. The Diamonds also had 2 fourbaggers, one each by CF Wayne Wilson and RF Dixie Baker. It was Baker's 5th of the year. The only pitcher of note was Waleska's starter Gary Hill, who did a nice job in his six innings, only yielding 2 runs on 5 hits. Jack Wagner (1-0) picked up the win, despite blowing the save in eighth. Marv Chancellor came on in the ninth and got the save. He gave up a two-out single, but then finished off Claxton by striking out the dangerous Baker. The Westerners (5-6) are in the fifth spot in the RBU South Division standings and trail first place Sugar Valley by 2.5 games. Sunday, April 29, 2001 Tycobbian Baseball Union TBU East Division Ninjas Nab First Game from Stallions 6-5 Toshiharu Ito saved the day for the Ginza Ninjas in the opening game of a doubleheader. He protected Kazuhiro Nakayama's 6-4 lead and salvaged a narrow 6-5 triumph over South Fork. Ito hurled 3+ innings, permitted 2 hits and 1 run. 3B Glenn Holliday did the only damage with a solo shot in the top of the ninth. Nakayama (1-2) got credit for the win and surrendered 4 runs and 8 hits in 5+ innings. CF Takashi Fujimoto paced the Ninja attack with 3 hits in 4 tries, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. He hit a triple and home run. SS Shinjiro Aoki was 2-4 with an RBI and scored a pair of runs. For the Stallions 1B Alex Kesler tagged 2 hits and drove in 2. Ken Olson (0-2) lost for the second time this year, yielding 5 runs in 4 innings. Rousakis Blanks SF on 4 Hits, Ninjas Sweep In a doubleheader sweep of South Fork Vic Rousakis was on target in the nightcap. The Ginza righthander shut them out 4-0 on just 4 hits for his first win this year. He fired 8 strikeouts and walked only 1 in a superlative outing. Southpaw Jerry Hairston (0-1) was the loser, allowing all 4 runs on 10 hits in his 7 innings of work. LF Earl Conley and 1B Kenshin Yamamoto clubbed solo roundtrippers for the Ninjas. Ginza has now won four straight games and is tied with Cape Coral and Hartsdale for first place in the TBU East race. All of them are 6-4 this season. The Stallions have lost four straight and have fallen to sixth place with a 3-7 mark. 'Canes Robinson Ties K Mark It wasn't a thing of beauty, but a win is a win -- Just ask Wally Robinson. In the first game of a doubleheader the chunky southpaw for Cape Coral went the distance in an 8-5 win over Ozarka. He was touched for 8 hits, but struck out 12 and walked only one. Robinson is now tied with Carl Thompson of the Belair Beach Sunbirds for the most strikeouts in a single game. RF Rod Kelly got his 3rd roundtripper this season and drove in 2 runs to led the Hurricanes, while LF James Middleton chipped in 2 more RBIs. Pacing the Naturals were C Billy Gibson and RF Ronnie Patterson, both had 2 hits each, including home runs. Luke Hatch (2-1) had a rough outing and lost for the first time this year. He was belted for 6 runs in 3 innings. CC Sweeps Ozarka The nightcap was no contest -- Cape Coral crushed Ozarka 13-3 to take both ends of a twinbill at Seaside Stadium and remained in a first place tie for the TBU East Division lead. RF Rod Kelly led the hit parade with 2-4 and 6 RBIs and backup catcher Rick Clark and 1B Rodger Wooten added 2 RBIs each. Lefthander Owen Pruitt (1-0) did a creditable job in his first start of the season. He scattered 8 hits and went all the way for the win. RF Roger Bradley and 1B Poochie Kramer did the most damage for the Naturals as each hit solo shots off Pruitt. Donnie Young (0-1) took the loss, his first decision of the year. He was whacked for 5 runs in the fourth inning. The Hurricanes picked up their third victory in a row over the Naturals and are on top of the division standings with Ginza and Hartsdale with 6-4 records. Ozarka is fifth at 4-6 and trail by two games. Hartsdale Wallops Zorros 8-2 in Opener Francisco Abreu supplied the hitting and Danny Griffin the pitching in Hartsdale's 8-2 romp over the Luxora Zorros at De la Vega Stadium. Second baseman Abreu smacked 2 home runs, scored 3 times and knocked in 6 in an impressive hitting display. Griffin improved his record to 2-1 with 7 innings of shutout ball, stopping the Z's on 7 hits. He tired in the eighth and needed bullpen help from Adam Falkenbach, who surrrendered a 2-run roundtripper to LF Pedro Vizquel in the last of the ninth. Hellcat CF Greg Reynolds had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Starter Keith Callahan (0-1) suffered the defeat as he gave up 4 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings. Montel Outduels Mann in Game Two In the second game of the twinbill Luxora gained a split with a 2-1 triumph over Hartsdale. Johnny Montel (1-2), a 24-year-old lefty, went the distance and scattered 9 hits with 6 Ks and 2 BBs. It was a very tough defeat for Glenn Mann (1-1), who permitted only 3 hits and 1 earned run. Pedro Vizquel delivered the winning blow when he doubled in Claudio Ordonez from first base in the last of the eighth. Ordonez had gained life on an error by first sacker Todd Seals, who dropped a throw. Rico Vina homered in the fifth to tie the score at 1-1. Back-to-back doubles by Greg Reynolds and Jay Luna to start the game got the Hellcats their only run of the game. There is now a three-way deadlock for the top spot in the RBU East. Hartsdale, Ginza and Cape Coral all have 6-4 records. Luxora is one game back at 5-5. TBU West Division Bucs Give Away Opener to Lynx 9-5 First place La Claire took advantage 7 errors by Bay St. Clair and took the opening game of a twinbill 9-5. The Lynx were gifted with 5 unearned runs. Val Krumholtz (2-0) threw a lot of pitches in his seven innings of work, but came out with his second victory of the season. He allowed 7 hits and 4 runs, struck out 5 and walked 4. Frank Lamoreaux tossed the last two innings and gave up the other run. LF Rich Hart led the La Claire offense with a 2-run homer and 3 RBIs. CF Lucky Collins helped out with a 2-run double. The Lynx only got 7 hits, but 5 walks and the record-setting 7 errors was enough to get the job done. 3B Bubba Tate committed 3 of the miscues. He is now tied with Far Mountain's catcher Dave Davis for the most errors in a game by a player. Far Mountain held the old team record with 6 errors, committed on April 27. The record for most errors by both teams is 8, held by Far Mountain and Glasco. Tate and SS Chuck Hankins topped the Bucs at bat with 2 RBIs apiece. Norm Gross (0-2) lost the game, yielding 6 runs, 3 hits and 3 walks in 1+ inning. He left with the score 6-2 in favor of La Claire. Only 2 runs were earned. Lynx Takes Pair, Edges Bucs 5-4 The TBU West leader took both games of the twinbill. Closer Monoto Kishata of La Claire earned his money in game two with Bay St. Clair. He came in with the Lynx holding a scant 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth and runners on first and second with only one out. He proceeded to get the final two outs of the inning with no damage. In the ninth he struck out the side to nail down the verdict. Nickie Baumgartner (1-1) chalked up the victory, giving up 3 runs (2 earned), 5 hits, while walking nobody and fanning 3. Kishata got credit for his second save on the year. Cleanup hitter for La Claire LF Rich Hart went 3-for-4 with an RBI. 3B Bubba Tate paced the Buccaneers with 2 RBIs. The Lynx (9-1) have the best record in the IPA, having won nine games in a row, while Bay St. Clair (2-8) is down in the cellar, already 7 games behind in the race. The Bucs have dropped six consecutive games, which sets a record for the new pro league. Frogs Squeeze by Champs in IPA's Longest Game In the longest game in the short IPA history, Stan Cobb's walk-off double decided a 14-inning thriller in the opening game of a doubleheader between Fairfax and Arlon. Both clubs had fought back several times to tie the game up. Cobb's hit made the Frogs an 8-7 winner over the Champions. SS Warren Lee and 2B Greg Inman whacked out 3 hits apiece to spark Fairfax, while Cobb, RF Gregg Vincent and LF Gator Davis contributed 2 RBIs each. The starting pitchers did well. Arlon's Ace Howe tossed 7 innings and gave up only 2 runs on 7 hits, while Robby Meredith went 8 for the Frogs, struck out 10 and allowed 4 runs and 4 hits. Johnny Schuessler and Takehida Takahashi tossed 5 shutout innings for Fairfax with the victory going to Takahashi. Jeff Nieman stood out for the Champions as he hurled 2-hit ball over 4 innings. The loss went to Erik Fitrakis (0-2), who came on in the fourteenth and was tagged for Cobb's game-winning hit. Fairfax Wins Pair From Arlon Game two was also a tight game and Fairfax took another one-run battle from the Arlon Champs. The Frogs were victorious in the nightcap 6-5 in a game played on their home grounds. Fairfax outhit Arlon 13 to 7 and was paced by 3B Stan Cobb with 2-5 and 2 RBIs, SS Warren Lee 2-5 with 2 runs scored and one batted in and RF Gregg Vincent 2-4, including a solo homer and a triple. CF Billy Echevarria went 3-4 and scored once, while 2B Greg Inman was 2-3 and scored once. 2B Karl Detwiler hit a 2-run roundtripper and had 3 RBIs in all to top the Champions. Jackie Leslie (2-1) got the win by going 8 innings. He allowed 6 hits and 5 runs, only 3 of them earned, walked only one and fanned 8 batters. Nicky D'Artois pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year. The loser was Ray Hunt (1-1), who suffered through a bad day, giving up 8 hits and 6 runs before he exited in the fourth. However, he only gave up 3 earned runs. Rod Kelley came in and blanked the Frogs the rest of the game. With the twinbill sweep Fairfax (7-3) has now won their last four games and have moved up to second place in the TBU West, two games behind first place La Claire (9-1). Arlon slipped to 4-6 and now rests in a three-way tie for the third spot with Bayview and Blue Lake. Blue Lake Bumps Off Bayview in Opener Blue Lake's big, tall righthander Bennie West stopped Bayview 6-3 to capture the first game of the Sunday twinbill. West (2-1) checked the Vikings on 7 hits, fanned 2 and walked 3. RF Pete Lane was the Blue Sox top batter with a 2-for-4 day, 2 RBIs and a home run. LF Greg Boone and CF Donnie Frazier both had 2 hits and drove in one run. Bayview's 1B Dwayne Coleman clouted his 5th roundtripper this season and is tied for the IPA lead. Paul Hood (0-1) caught the loss. He allowed 3 runs in less than an inning. Blue Sox Win a Pair from Vikings Blue Lake got good efforts from Jay Clay (1-0) and Russ Courtney on the hill to knock off Bayview 4-2 and win both ends of the doubleheader at Downtown Plaza Stadium. Clay (1-1) notched the victory, working into the seventh and permitted only 2 runs and six hits. Russ Courtney relieved him and held the Vikings runless the rest of the game to get his first save of the year. SS Speedy Warren belted a 2-run shot to put Blue Lake up 4-2 in the 6th. Adrian Strom got credit for the loss, yielding 4 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings. He fanned 6 and walked two. Victories in the last two games of the 5-game series put the Blue Sox (4-6) in a three-way tie for third place in the TBU West race with Bayview (4-6) and Arlon (4-6). All of them trail first place La Claire (9-1) by 5 games. |
Being able to do a write-up of each game in the game really is a great feature.
If you haven't used it yet, you should try it. It also make your News Stories have some personality as your write-up is used in the Game News. You might have to delete an occasional shutout story that the game generates on its own. |

Tuesday, May 1, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union RBU North Division McFalls Spins 5-Hit Shutout, A's Beat Redhawks Glasco's Arnie McFalls (2-1) spread out 8 hits in a 5-0 shutout over Far Mountain. He went the distance, struck out 4 and walked only one batter in a fine performance. LF Ox Beauvais and Barry McCord backed him with home runs. Beauvais slugged his 4th of the year, a solo shot in the fourth frame. McCord's was good for 3 runs in the eighth inning. Pat Brown (0-1) started for the Redhawks and allowed only one run and one hit through 7 innings with 5 Ks and 6 BBs. Brown sustained the loss. The Athletics ran their mark to 8-3 on the year, good enough for a first place tie in the RBU North with the Valmara Vipers (8-3). Far Mountain's record dipped to 5-6. The Redhawks are in a third place tie with Colfax (5-6). All-Stars Jolt Valmara Vipers The Elnora All-Stars went on a 17-hit rampage and jolted the Valmara Vipers 12-6 at War Memorial Stadium. LF Quincy Peterson led the assault with 2 hits and 4 RBIs and CF Harry Wright went 3-for-6 and drove in 3 runs. Southpaw Sean Sykes (2-0) tired badly after 8 innnings and left with a 12-1 lead. He gave up one run and 6 hits, but walked 7 in and up-and-down performance. The Vipers best batters were 3B Matt Mazurek, who banged out 2 hits and had 3 RBIs and LF Louis Sharp, who was 3-5 with 2 runs scored. Todd Turner (1-2) was victimized for 5 runs and 8 hits and made an early exit in the fifth. With the defeat the Vipers now share first place with the Glasco A's. Both teams are 8-3 on the year. Elnora is 4-7 and in fifth place. Blasters Blast Vigilantes 10-2 The Colfax Blasters lived up to their name today at Mountain View Stadium -- they blasted Volusia 10-2 behind an impressive outing by Alex Castille (2-0). The smooth-throwing southpaw throttled the V's on 6-hits, fanned 7 and issued only 2 free passes. He got plenty of run support from C Howie Peterson with 3 RBIs, 1B Dennis Cole with a 2-run homer, his 4th of the season and 3B Russ Ferrell, who had a perfect 3-for-3 day with a pair of RBIs. Castille even chipped in 2 RBIs himself. Not a good day at all for Volusia. Loser Gil Armand (0-1) allowed most of the damage, yielding 7 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings. Colfax improved to a 5-6 record and are deadlocked with the Far Mountain Redhawks (5-6) for the third spot in the RBU North divisional race. The Volusia Vigilantes have last place all to themselves with a 3-8 mark. |
I hope it is not a chronic problem, but I crashed when I just clicked a player to put in the game.
Sadly, this was an 18-inning game and would have been the longest ever in the short history of the IPA. All I lost was this game and some changes in the lineups of a few teams. I keep hearing that this a chronic problem with V2007. I went 11 seasons in the Alltime Allstar Association and never had anything like this happen. That was one of the plusses of V6.51. I guess I will have to backup after every game just to be safe. |
I have had 2 more crashes. It occurs when I am editing the depth charts.
When I drag a player to remove him from the depth chart, the game crashes and I lose all the games played that day and all of the changes I have made to the team lineups. This seems to be a chronic problem. I think it may be too much work replaying wiped-out games and having to back up after every single game. I play 12 games a day, sometimes as many as 24, when doubleheaders are scheduled. Sorry, this league may have to be put on hold until this problem is solved. I may go back to V6.51 where I don't have this problem. V6.51 in nowhere near the game V2007 is -- but it is stable and works. |
I disabled the debug mode that I use to proof the News Stories and PBP.
It probably had nothing to do with the problem, but at least it is one variable I don't have to worry about now. I did a lot of work dragging players and clearing out the DH lineups and depth charts and I edited the lineups and depth charts of several teams. I had no crashes. :) Then I played out 3 games with no crashes. One good thing has come out of this problem -- I now back up after every game. :) |

Tuesday, May 1, 2001 Ruthlandian Baseball Union RBU South Division Diamonds Get a Gem from Castellani Lefthander Pat Castellani of Claxton hurled a 5-0 shutout over first place Sugar Valley, stopping them on 7 hits. He fanned 4 and walked 3 in a strong outing. Castellani (2-1) even helped his cause with a 2-run triple in the second inning. CF Juan Barajas also had a home run for the Diamonds. The losing pitcher was Tony Michelet (1-1), who allowed 4 runs and 5 hits in 5 innings. The Rattlers (7-4) are the top club in the RBU South, while Claxton (4-7) is in the sixth and last spot in the division. FC Beats Marston 5-2 Behind Stuart Lumberjack righthander Gene Stuart (1-0) won his first start of the year 5-2 over the Marston Nine. He yielded 10 hits, but walked no one. He was tough when men were on base and he struck out 7. Forest City piled up 11 hits in the game and were paced by RF Benny Davis' third roundtripper of the season and C Gerry Tucker who whacked his first. Marston's Casey Ledbetter (2-1) took the loss, permitting 4 runs and 7 hits in just 3 innings. It was the Lumberjacks fifth successive win and the Nine's fifth loss in a row. Forest City improved to 6-5 this season. Marston is now all even at 6-6. The Lumberjacks are in second place in the RBU South Division, one game off the pace of first place Sugar Valley. The Nine are tied with the Waleska Westerers (6-6) for the third spot. Westerners Win 1-0 Over Sunbirds It was a magnificent pitchers duel at Westerner Field between Rusty Kraft and Troy Wilson. Kraft (1-1) came close to shutting out the Belair Beach Sunbirds on a 2-hitter, but fell one out short. In the top of the ninth Waleska held a 1-0 lead. However, after he retired the first two batters, Kraft walked the next two. At that point McGraw Johnson yanked Kraft and summoned Andrei Marsiske from the bullpen to face a tough lefthanded hitter, Nicky Swift. Marsiske got the Sunbird clean-up hitter swinging on a 3-2 pitch to nail down the win. The only run of the game occurred in the last of the fifth, when SS Errol Eichhorn smacked a two-bagger to lead off the inning, moved to third on a ground out and came in when pitcher Kraft grounded out to short. Kraft and Wilson were both superb. Kraft got the victory and allowed only 2 hits, both of them doubles. He fanned 5 and walked 3. Wilson (1-1) was just about as good as he surrendered just 4 hits, struck out 3 and walked nobody. There were only 6 total hits in the game. This set a new IPA mark for the fewest hits in a game by one team (2) and the fewest hits in a game by two teams (6). The old mark was 9 by Volusia (4) and Elnora (5) on April 26. The old mark of fewest hits allowed by a pitcher belonged to Ray Hunt of Arlon, who restricted Bayview to just 3 hits on April 24 and Danny Griffin of Hartsdale, who held Cape Coral to just 3 hits on April 25. The record now belong to Kraft and Marsiske. The Westerners evened their record to 6-6, good enough for a third place tie with Marston in the RBU South race, while Belair Beach dropped to 5-6 and are in fifth place. |
