Strategy Profiles

Not sure if this is the best place for it, but it looks to be better than any other

and we can debate which is right...and do a write up for the strategy profiles

I have attached Jim Bowden's GM profile, this is my feeling only

I have him with
Scout Majors 130 (He sells off injured players for something, but also grabs Vets who are on the downside)
Scout Minors 119 (Is very erratic in getting valuable team players)
Scout International 88 (Screws Latin players in signing bonuses, but never got a star)
Scout Amateurs 172 (He drafted two of the best OBP guys in Votto and Dunn)
He favors tools (Votto,Zimmerman,Dunn)

Strategy (all from far right to left)
Favor Vets 5 (Keeps struggling Vets on the roster over talented prospects)
Favor Pitch 17 (He is very heavily offense orientated)
Favor Defense 12 (With Griffey and Zimmerman, defense DOES mean something to him)
Favor Speed 18 (He loves power guys Soriano,Kearns,Dunn,Guillen)
Favor Average 20 (He'll take a .380 OBP and .230 BA any day)

Can't attach the .str file, we need to fix that

MGR-Davey Johnson

Handle Players 145
Handle Veterans 178 (Vets play well for Davey, because he lets them just play)
Handle Rookies 54 (Not so good, as he never gets involved, thus rookies sometimes
run amok
Teach Hitting 150
Teach Pitching 114
Teach Fielding 182

He highly favors ability

Roster Strategy

Favor vets 8
Favor Pitch 6
Favor Defense 3
Favor speed 10
Favor Avg 15

Offense Strategy

Steal bases 3
Base running 4
Hit & Run 2
Run & Hit 0
Sac bunt 1
Bunt for hit 1
Squeeze Bunt 0

Pitching and Defense Strategy

Pitch Around 2
Intentional Walk 1
Hold Baserunners 0
Guard Lines 1
Play IF in 0
Corners in 0
IF Shift 1

Substitution

PR 1
PH for Position 2
PH for P's 2 (should upped 5 for 7&8 innings and 7 for 9)
Hook Sp 7 (past the 7th, lower this by 5)
Hook RP 5 (past the 7th lower this by 5)
Favor L/R 5

This may be wrong, but as a Philly Phan, I never saw Johnson really ever 'manage' a game, he let the talent take care of the results, and made a pitching change when necessary

Carlton 04-21-2014 11:09 AM

bump

Does no one want to help with this? Or want this? I think it's a pretty neat feature

JCarter93 04-30-2014 10:50 PM

I had to reset Billy Beane's stats to reflect his Moneyball persona:

Specifically:

Favor ability (which I interpret as favoring stats over tools)

Vets vs Rooks: even
Pitching vs Hitting: even
Favor Offense
Slightly favor speed

Steal bases, H&R, R&H, Sac bunt very low
Bunt for hit, squeeze low

That's pretty much it. Suggestions and comments would be appreciated, since he's one of my guys. :)

Carlton 05-01-2014 08:49 AM

Billy Beane is mainly a GM, and I think the game will set the personnel strategy only with a GM, when you do it manually it makes the MGR's personnel preferences over write the GM's...weird and inefficient.

Beane is def. all the way right for OBP

cavebutter 05-01-2014 06:41 PM

Thank you for doing this. I think it's a pretty cool feature as well!

Maybe attach them as .txt and we can change the extension before importing?

Cowboys3356 05-07-2014 10:13 AM

Can these profiles be imported into the game?

Carlton 05-14-2014 12:03 PM

Yes, I was told that we can NOW upload the .str files here, and all you have to do is download them into your manager strategy folder, then in the team strategy section choose import strategy

Can you post your .str files here? Would love to get these strategies into my game!

Carlton 05-15-2014 09:24 AM

I'm working on them, life just got a bit hectic

Leo_The_Lip 05-21-2014 10:46 AM

Just to be clear, this is now a feature in OOTP15?

We can finally make profiles of the great managers and import them into the game?

Things like Stengel setting his infield for the double play far more often than others can be set in strategy?

I'm very interested in making historical profiles, if this is true.

pstrickert 05-21-2014 11:22 AM

Robert McGraw (MLHFFYP) spent 100s of hours creating dozens of manager profiles. You can find them in the strategy_profiles folder in OOTP15.

Is this option available for all types of leagues, including fictional?

pstrickert 05-21-2014 11:49 AM

Yes, you could load these manager profiles into your fictional league. Some of them are fictional managers, in fact. I believe there is a .doc in that folder that describes each manager.

Here's a chart I made for quick reference.

pstrickert 05-21-2014 11:56 AM

Bob McGraw recommends using a specific GM profile (also included in the folder) with each manager. This will ensure that they have the same general philosophies. Also, using these manager profiles will affect sim results (which will be less accurate compared to real life). I guess the sim model does not account for more distinctive differences among managers.

Carlton 05-22-2014 10:08 AM

Yes, just like Pstrickert stated

Also, with this thread, I was hoping that guys could do modern day managers

I got the file type .str to be able to be uploaded in the forums, so if you make a Brad Ausmus file, you can save it in the team strategy section, then upload it here with a brief description

Bob did a HELLUVA job with the major managers and GMs (they need to be changed manually or you'll use the manager's personnel tendencies)

But when it comes to Modern baseball, I am at a loss for most of these guys, I usually make them all far left on most things for innings 1-6, except IF shift which is far right, then PH for P far right after 7 IP...most of the managers today seem carbon copies of each other

In essence, I need YOUR help and so does the community...if someone can get a hold of MLHFFYP, I sent him a PM but never got a response, and see where he got his info, we can do legwork.

I will try and get the 2nd tier old time managers up, like Peckinpaugh, Dykes,Cronin, Fielder Jones, Hughie Jennings and such...but modern days guys...no clue

I will say Wilbert Robinson has one error, his defense want, should be low, he had some of the worst fielding teams of all time

Strategy Profiles

Glad to see interest in the strategy profiles. They really add a different dimension to the game, at least in my opinion.

They really did take an enormous amount of time to make but I believe the results were worth it. I used Sporting Life, The Sporting News, Reach guides, Spalding guides, Street and Smith Annuals, The Sporting News Annuals, the team history books published by Putnam, SABR publications, and many, many books. I only mention this because if you want to make a realistic profile it is important to be as accurate you have, whether you are doing a profile for a manager's career or a particular set of years.

I did this project with the encouragement and support of pstrickert, I put them out there for everyone to use and the reaction I hope all players give them a try.

I have asked in the past if anyone wants a particular manager/general manager done but did not get any replies. If someone wants one done let me know and I will try and get to it as soon as I can.

A couple of points.

* I believe they are best used with no coaching but this is a personal preference so some of the below points might not apply.

* The game will not keep your managers assigned to the team if you do not check the use coaching box before leaving the game. Check it when you leave and uncheck it when you start to play again.

* Also, if you don't want them fired keep the use coaching box unchecked. To make sure you have a manager of the year make sure you check that box on the day it is announced and then forward to the next day.

* I always make the teams goal to be win now. This is done in the preseason.

* Use the manager and general manager profiles together. You want the drafting/trading strategy for the GM to be in line with how the manager manages.

* Read the docs! They give a background for each manager in a way that is, hopefully, entertaining and informative.

* Don't ignore the fictional managers. I use them a lot and they add something special to the leagues I have.

* You can use the profiles for any league but they are really fun with random debut leagues.

* To see how the managers have done over the years you have to click the use coaching box. Once you look at the history uncheck the box and continue playing.

Any input is appreciated so let me know if there are any questions with which I can help.

Bob

Again, much thanks to pstrickert for his encouragement.

SirMichaelJordan 06-13-2014 07:42 PM

is there a file?

gbwitheyes 06-13-2014 11:29 PM

I never knew about the strategy profiles. That is a cool feature. The individual files are a nice jumping off point for those of us playing the fantasy leagues.

Carlton 06-16-2014 09:27 AM

I created this thread so people coul upload their strategy files for managers they knew about besides the HOFers that come with the game... You can attach the .str file, which you create when in the Team Strategy section of OOTP it is then saved in the manager strategies folder of OOTP

MLHFFYP did the real life ones and did a helluva job with the Fictional guys back stories.

As for his strategy of checking and unchecking USE COACHING, this is how I get Connie Mack to coach 50 years in my historical replays (sometimes I do, sometimes I let him retire early) I get MGR of the Year, I can change my Player/Managers at a certain time, and around the time of Connie Mack's retirement, I can let the AI takeover

Anyway, MLHFFYP, I asked to have the .str file uploaded so a manager I would request is Patsy Donovan who skipped a bit during the early days of baseball and was a nice stopgap manager for horrible squads and Hughie "Ee-Yah" Jennings, who was the only surprise no show when I looked at the strategy profiles.

RANGER11JP 07-28-2014 01:30 AM

Is there, or should there be, a referance to which GM and/or manager .str you have assigned to a team? I can barely remember what I had for breakfast, nevermind who I might have assigned to a team and then know if they got fired by the AI?

IMHO, the game needs better history and interface with the managers, players that become managers and all the other coaches and such and now these .str files as well.

Thanks.

JP

Again, much thanks to pstrickert for his encouragement.

What are the how's and why's for turning coaching off and on?

The GM settings default to a neutral setting. Are these five numbers based on stating there? Or am I missing the whole point?

Despite my confusion, I appreciate your hard work on this. I believe this could be a feature of OOTP that sets it apart from everything else. It needs a bit of tweaking, but the concept is excellent!!!

Regards,

JP
