Football sims?

What are the best football sims on the market today?

dave1927p 09-02-2019 11:28 AM

The only options that I'm aware of besides Madden is currently Front Office Football 8 and Wolverine Studios Football game.

I still play a lot of FOF8 to tie me over but the GUI is terrible with outdated rosters.

mickey7 09-03-2019 11:49 AM

Actually there are a few others the best of which is probably Second and Ten from Roo Games in England. Difficult but possible to run careers lots of historical rosters---nice game.

Maruko 09-04-2019 03:32 AM

Do you know Action Pc Football of Dave Koch sports game?
It's a very very accurate simulation of football i like so much. Exist in Pro and College version, you can buy the seasons.
The only limit is that you can play only single seasons

gbmoore121 09-04-2019 08:05 PM

DDSPF 20 from Wolverine Studios just came out and you can run 2 years in the Demo. This has been a huge upgrade from 19.

Edit: Here is a review from Operation Sports.

This may be the new go to football sim. It’s a shame FOF 9 isn’t out to create some real competition in this genre.

I'd still take FOF8 over the Wolverine Studios game

Axis Football 2019
Pro Strategy Football 2020 all coming out this month.

I find that pro strategy gives good results for stats, I'm not sure about Axis.

aslanking 09-10-2019 12:23 AM

Has anyone played any of these. I am finally ready to take the leap. Sick and tired of waiting for fof. Never heard of pro strategy but it looks great

PSUColonel 09-10-2019 01:03 PM

I think I might pick up DDSPF 2020.....it’s getting very good marks from the few reviews and YouTube videos I have come across. Everyone who has tried it says it’s vastly improved from previous versions, and is very much on par with FOF.

I tried the demo and liked it a lot. Not surprised that it's getting favorable reviews. I'll be purchasing it in the very near future.

I'm really enjoying it, and I've joined a great online league too which helps as well. There are still openings as well, and it's a long-time league with great people running it that is in 2033 in-game, so it's been around for many real-life years and you know isn't going anywhere.

We are just winding up the 2033 draft, so a good time to jump in... Anyone who has the game let me know if you're looking for a league, there are openings in the one I'm in (Weekend Warriors Pro Football)

It's match engine is its biggest strength. I dislike the interface but other than that it's really enjoyable. I think I'll prefer playing FOF9 because if its really a product alike OOTP and FHM, it's depth will be out of this world (just like FOF8's depth is, but the interface makes it hard to find stuff.)

Try the demo out. It might be a good hold over.

Could you expand in why the engine is the biggest strength?

Reminds me of Football Manger with all the 2D dots showing the plays.

But that's doesn't demonstrate the engine is strong, that demonstrates that has visual graphics, which is a completely different matter.

A strong engine presents expected results for the ratings of the players, of course with a little variance to make it fun but not a lottery, does this game have this??

DDSPF20 on Mac

Has anybody tried to play this on a mac using any windows emulator programmes, and if so does it work?

I am looking for something to tide me over until FOF comes out, a sim based game with as in depth franchise mode as possible and DDSPF20 seems to be the best around at the moment.

Honestly, a GM in my league (http://cfa-football.com using PF19) only has a Mac and has been doing this for several real life years... He often complains about this, a lot of time for some reason the emulator he uses will reset his team password, which is weird in its own right. But, it does work on an emulator.

mmarra82 10-08-2019 09:39 PM

I have been wanting to try DDSPF for sometime but I only have a Mac and I don’t have any idea how to run PC games on my Mac. Is it simple? Can anyone offer any advice?

Anyone try the new Axis football? Seems really deep

I have it.

The lack of statistical depth is a huge turn off for me. It is a franchise sim, yet doesn't keep career stats year to year or team records or anything . So it comes off as a franchise sim that's essentially just season mode over and over. It does have good depth in franchise though but still lacking in my mind. You can also play out games but to be honest I wouldn't ever buy a game like this to play out as it's going to be miles behind Madden (I'm not one of those people who thinks Madden is trash).

Overall it's a solid game and I'm happy to have supported its further development, but it's not a game I can see myself sinking long term hours in to as the things I like in a game (world building, statistics and records) are lacking.

If one is only interested in season replays vs the AI, computer simming or 'head to head', PC Action Football is outstanding.
Fully editable, tons of options for league play & IP connection for multiplayer (as well as 'hotseat').
Per statistical results compared to 'real-life'...in my 40+ years of playing football games, tabletop or pc...this product is second to none. imho

This is one of the best for sure, I loved it personally

I am beta testing a football management game that is truly a gem. It comes out later this summer. It has platforms for the iPad (iOS)and the computer. You can Even watch the action Unfold with players on the field. (Not just dots)The programmer is one of the best I have ever worked with. Not only does he listen to what his customers want but he then implements the ideas in the next patch. Also it has the deepest play calling I have ever seen in a computer sim. That has no interest to me because I like to play GM and watch the action unfold. But for those who want to play Like Bill Belichick There is no finer apparatus to do So. The play calling can be as simple as Just calling a play or as intricate as setting what blockers to what scheme and what individual routes the receivers will travel. To much to talk about in a post. But however you like to play your game as GM or Coach to just simming the games or watching the action unfold and trying to build a dynasty this game has it all. It is also very simple to play and understand but mostly it is just plain fun. The game is called PSF2021. Look for it in the coming months.

Zorro 05-27-2020 10:06 AM

Here is some info for last seasons game 2020 for those interested. This link tells you a little about the game but this years edition goes well beyond. If you are interested just wait for the new edition. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1...Football_2020/

The AI is very good and the stats are right on. It really is a lot of fun to play. There is always room for another good sport Management simulation. I support them all for the great pleasure they give me. (The good ones that is)

I always read both positive and negative reviews on Steam on games before I buy. With the Pro Strategy Football 2020 version, I see there's no Free Agency, and you can't change the depth chart? Sorry, just read your post on the new game, which will include free agency.

Also, and this was an older review, perhaps when the 2020 game first came out, but the reviewer said there were no financials or contract negotiations?

Hopefully, the new version coming out later in the summer will address these issues.

Robmeister89 05-28-2020 08:57 AM

My game, Indoor Football Manager, was recently launched on itch.io in its alpha form. I'm constantly making updates to it as I get free time. You are all welcome to check it out and download it for free. I have a user guide that you can download as well over at my discord channel at GM Games. If you like what you're playing be sure to follow me on itch.io or be a member of the GM Games Discord for up to date information and notifications of new releases.

Download IFM: https://robmeister89.itch.io/indoor-football-manager
Please note, you do not have to donate. Just click on 'no thanks, take me to the downloads'. Please read the short description provided. The user guide will be included with the next version (alpha 3.9) but it can be found at the GM Games Discord or you can provide me your email address (via pm) and I'll send it over.

Invite to Discord for GM Games: https://discord.gg/JfYPMkA

Lastly, you don't have to know or understand how indoor football is different to play this game. If you've never watched indoor football you wouldn't know that it's actually a ton more similar to NFL/college than arena football. Although, you can design your team as a pass heavy arena football team.

The new version has free agency. In fact it has a original way of doing it . It is simple but very fun. That is why I said to wait and buy the new version. 😁

Just to bring it up again , If you are a iPad user this game is wonderful. It is a full edition and is under 4 bucks. I am trying to get him to up the price because it is worth well more. I get lazy at times and don’t want to lug out my laptop so the iPad is a wonderful weapon while laying on my recliner chasing that ring.😁

RETRO BOWL for the iPad is also a fun game that has some financials, a draft, and a form of free agency. Rosters are limited to 10 players, but still it's pretty fun. You control the action on the offensive end and it auto does the defense, though you don't see the plays play out. The players outside of the 10 you pick are at replacement level quality.

It’s on the list but I am not sure it will make it this time around. People wanted A lot of options on rules. He even had to add the Canada rules of three downs. I was not wild about that one but surprisingly enough a lot of people wanted that. It was very hard for me to test because I know nothing about the Canadian league and their stats. He has a few different OT options and that takes up a ton of time to program. Also he has a mini way of doing free agency and that took time but actually turned out to be fun which also surprised me. I wanted options for smaller leagues also. I enjoy more of a 3 Division 12 team league. Easier for me to keep track of all the players in the league. A lot of people wanted a 150 team league because he also has college and High school rules. Like I said it is on the list but so many people want so many different things it might not make it on this edition. He has a fault (But a good one) that he listens To his customers and tries to please them. That is VERY hard to do. Lol. The stats are spot on which I love. At least the NFL stats. I do not know enough about College, High School or Canada stats to give my opinion on that. But the price is very reasonable if you like the game and To me it is to cheap. I always felt that a good game like OOTP or DDSPB just to name a couple were to cheap considering all the pleasure it brings me. When you can get a game like PSF for under 4 bucks for the iPad and under 20 for the computer I just feel he put to much work in it for that. But gaming is my life so I really appreciate a programmer who puts out a great game. I always felt OOTP was under priced for the joy it has given me. It cost more to go to McDonald’s one time. Lol.

Zorro 05-28-2020 06:51 PM

Also in the game you have different ways to call plays if you want. I just like to watch the AI play out my game but a lot of people want to call their own plays. He has different ways to do this from easy just call the play you want to use or the advanced Play where you can even choose who to block with who. All of this takes hours of testing and refining. I do not test this part of the game. It is way to complicated For me to pick a scheme and then choose what blocker to double up on a run Or what pass routes to employ for different receivers against different teams ete. I just like to form My team with their scheme and watch the AI call the plays. I guess my point is it takes a hell of a lot of time for him to get these things right for everyone. He has a list a mile long of things to add and he does some in each update but like anything else there is not time enough in a day to do everything for everybody. But he does try. Well enough of this lol. I can rattle on about a game forever. I just thought I would bring this up for people who might like this kind of game. If you do decide you might like to try it be sure and wait for the 2021 edition coming later This summer. It has more to it.😁

This is funny. I just got this email from Kerry and it sounds like he might be working on different sizes in the league for season play right now. I wanted it for career play but it is a start. This is what he said.
“Thanks again! I’m working on a new patch, but I’m going to hold off for 3-4 more weeks, because I’m working on some NFL stuff, and I don’t want you to lose your leagues and careers any more than necessary.

Here are the patch notes so far. Now I’m going to work on supporting past NFL leagues, wish me luck!

Beta 4 (5/28/2020)
Improved Play by Play (can now go immediately to a Qtr)

NEW:
- Can now play seasons (Regular seasons only at this time) for non-NFL leagues
- Added custom schedules for non-NFL leagues
- Added ability to import schedules from csv

Details:
Select any league for Single Season play. Click on 'New Season and Schedule'

You can click on 'Replay Current Schedule' or 'Load a Custom Schedule' (modern
NFL leagues have two more options)

When loading a custom schedule, you can load as is or shuffle it.

Please test:
- various schedule sizes for a given league
- please validate that all provided schedules work correctly
- create and load your own schedule
- load as is and shuffle
- please confirm that the NFL leagues still work
- please play some career seasons to make sure they work

I will start thinking through NFL designs for both leagues and schedules.

Thanks,
Kerry

Thanks for the updates Zorro, I've been a fan of the game for a while. Totally different type of game than the DDS football games, but enjoy both. I've seen some of the beta gameplay and it looks like he's made quite a few improvements.

Do you know if you can truly do everything in the mobile game that you can in the pc version? I know there were modding challenges in the 19 version, but I never tried 20. What about career stats, leaders in the mobile version?

Yes it keeps complete career leader stats in the mobile version. You can edit all players and teams and you can review every Past season you play. Now as far as the Mods go I am not sure because I do my own editing for teams and players. I play on the iPad and love it. It has simple animation that I have come to love. He has a different way of doing free agency. You can set up in the options the ave amount of free agency leaving teams from 0 to 5. You get to set one of them as a franchise player to keep him .It is simple but is a lot of fun And makes your decision on a franchise player very important. In fact most of the testers love the way he does free agency because it is simple ,fun and very exciting at the end of the season because you never know who might be on the list. I had 1 season where my star running back and my Star QB were listed so I could only keep one. Free agency is like the college draft. The worst team from that season Gets first choice on free agents. So you could lose a star. I always set my free agency option at two which means some years I have none and some years I could have three up for free agency. I get to chose one to keep. In over 20 years of play I only had my top two stars up for free agency once in the same year. So the better year you have the lower your draft pick is and the lower you picked for free agents. I know it sounds strange but it is so much fun and takes a lot of strategy in a simple way. Best of all you an get this game for under 4 dollars on the iPad (Unless I can convince him to charge more. ) You can make it a college league or a HS league or any league you want. You can set the minutes of the quarters so if you want to play HS so be it. You can watch or play every game with graphics. You can go back in history and see each season. Of course it also keeps career leader stats. I know I sound like a fan boy but it is a fun game and the price is right. (I talk about OOTP in the same way on other forums.) To me 2021 will be way better then 2000 was because of its unique free agency. The graphics are crisper also. So if you are interested I would wait for 2021 to come out later this summer.

Zorro 05-29-2020 05:43 PM

P.S. Also he is customer oriented so if there is something you would like and it can be done he will listen. He appreciates any suggestions that helps the game.
