Introduction We all have them, our favorites. Whether it is because we saw them in person as a child or because we heard of their legends from others, we all have the preconceived theory of who the greatest baseball team is of all time. In the only sport that spans the generations of your great grandfathers, the debate is deep rooted and comes from all corners of our nation. Passion of generations and their heroes are held more tightly then a sacred family recipe as their era, those they rooted for, are their own definition and identity of greatness. Somewhere or someday when we are all gone; when that meteor finally hits us and we are in our Einstein youth picking up sticks again, will there be peace. Maybe at that time in a place loosely called heaven, the greatest of this old game can assemble together again, and have it out for one last fight to really see who was the best. Whose legend was the most valid and real. It does little good to debate who the best player of all time was as it could never be fair or sensible to compare a pitcher to a right fielder, or a closer to a base stealer. The point to all of these greats and what they are made of comes down to wining, winning the greatest prize of them all which is that pennant and a chance at World Series glory. All great players had them, even Ernie Banks and Ryne Sandberg, that one team that may have not won it all, but is still considered legendary and good enough to be in consideration. It is all about team and not about records, stats, or comparisons. It is in the end about the win, about the winning side that for 150 or more games reached their goal. No one but no one can argue with a winner. So the winners need to take their place, need to play things out and prove their greatness against others like them, others just as keen and confident. A legend versus legends is the only way to solve this ultimate test. The quest is to prove to you and to myself that there is a measuring stick and there are moments that can be tested to see the definition of greatness. It can not be found in the stats or the theories, it can only be found on the field of play, with a wooden bat and a ball, the same rules that have been for 120 years, this is the only judge that everyone will accept, the only mechanism to determine our answers. For on the diamond there can be no debate, a winner wins but a legend keeps winning. This will be an analysis as well. This process is all too important to rush through or to get instant gratification from. It has to be enjoyed, like a fine wine or a long tale that can be unfolded in layers before the ultimate answer. All great things need to be worked at and this endeavor is definitely great and deserves all the focus we can give to it. |
Format of Finding the Greatest
Baseball is a different type of game; it is a game of longevity and patience. Baseball is a game of seasons that lead up to a moment rather then immediate matchups and results. A season is so important in an undertaking like this because it keeps things the way the participants know it and excel in, a pennant race. A pennant race for all of 162 games will determine the best team every time, there is no room for flukes or hot streaks, this is about the cream rising to the top, this is the way baseball has always been. The format for the season will also help provide a very intriguing side of things. We will be able to track and compare all the teams in a 162 game schedule and will be able to create our won leader boards and record book. The hallowed numbers of .400 or 56 straight games can be chased by the greatest. Batting titles will be played out and records in direct competition by the likes of Ty Cobb vs. Pete Rose and Barry Bonds vs. Babe Ruth will create themselves. So in an inadvertent way, we are able to measure individual greatness under a familiar measuring stick while keeping the overall focus on the ultimate finding of the greatest team. So each and every team will be inserted into a pennant race. There are a total of 2624 major league baseball clubs between the year 1900 and 2023. Every major league team will be included. These teams will be divided into six tiers, tier one including the strongest teams in history and tier 6 the weakest. Each tier will have 480 teams. Round 1. One Hundred Sixty Four seasons will be played out. The rules to the seasons will be as follows: - 162 game schedule - 1986 settings - 4 divisions of 4 teams. - Winners of each division will advance, no wild cards. - Injuries will be low Only pennant winners advance, I like this because I think part of the importance of winning a pennant has been lost of late. 164 seasons means 164 champions. These 80 teams will receive a bye to the round 3. The 164 other pennant winners will also advance. Round 2 The remaining 164 pennant winners will face off against each other in a best of seven series leaving 82 teams. Round 3 The 82 will be added to the 164 making 256 total teams. There will be an allstar game each season including a home run derby. This will be tracked as the best names to ever play will likely compete. All awards will be tracked and awarded. One issue that came forth was rather to use injuries of not. There are two sides to this debate; one is that injuries shouldn’t play a role in a perfect world where you are trying to find the best team based on skill and merit alone. I would argue however that we are not trying to find the best team on skill alone, but rather on everything else that incorporates a champion including endurance, stamina, and conditioning in a long season. So for this reason injuries will be included, I will however curtail them a bit in hopes that they won’t be too frequent. But make it known from now; at some point the engine will create an injury that greatly impacts a team and a season or pennant race. On a final note of course the process isn’t perfect, but I can not think of a better way then to play out seasons to determine greatness. Will luck have a part of things? Surely to some extent, but with the marathon of the process the hope is that the standard deviation for any outliners will be greatly reduced and we will have a conclusive champion of all time. For what would baseball be without a little intervention from the baseball Gods? |

John Olerud has 20 RBI while Mark Whiten is hitting .350. Jimmy Key has a 1.60 ERA in his last 4 games. 1912 Chicago Cubs - Cubs have scored the most runs in the league at 162 and Frank Schulte has 14 home runs already to lead the league with 33 RBI. Chicago pitching and defense needs to improve. 1996 New York Mets - Not bad at .500 in the division. Jason Isringhausen is 4-0 with a 1.90 ERA in the rotation while John Franco has 6 saves and looks domiant as a closer. Lance Johnson providing a spark in the lineup. 1903 Chicago White Sox - Roy Patterson has a 1.37 ERA with 4 wins but the Sox offense is last in team WAR scoring only 98 runs for the entire month. 1920 Cleveland Indians - Pushing into first place late in the month Tris Speaker has spoken about his club pacing itself. Speaker himself is hitting only .260 but Steve O'Neil is a top catcher hitting .342. 2012 Los Angeles Dodgers - Clayton Kershaw was pitcher of the month and is in for a huge season winning 6 already with a 1.83 ERA. Matt Kemp has 7 home runs and Kanley Jansen 9 saves. 1992 Philadelphia Phillies - Curt Schilling has been hammered with an ERA over 6 and the team defense has been shotty. The Phillies do fight in close games and Jim Fergosi has the club afloat. 1927 Boston Braves - Boston pitching has been hit hard and there are no easy answers in the rotation. George Mogridge has been used as a closer and has saved 10 of the 11 Boston wins with a 1.04 ERA. 1928 Philadelphia Athletics - Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons are on fire and will be a nemesis for pitchers all season long. Lefty Grove however has lost 5 games already and looks way off for an ace. 1972 Los Angeles Dodgers - Tops in runs scored and very good on defense. The Dodgers feel they can beat the Athletics. Don Sutton is 5-1 and 36 year old Frank Robinson hit .400 in Aprl. 2022 Detroit Tigers - Few birght spots for the Tigers who struggle with strikeouts and getting on base. Tarik Skubal has been good with a 2.53 ERA and Javier Baez hit .462 in the last six games of the month. 1947 Cincinnati Reds - Harry Perkowski will miss two weeks with injury as the Reds chase a slow start. Johnny Van DerMeer has an ERA over 6 and Kent Patterson is 0-4 as Reds pitching has started off slow. 2021 Toronto Blue Jays - The best record in the league and first in batting average the Jays looked poised early. Teoscar Hernandez has 25 RBI and Vlad Guerrero is hitting .363 to start. 2005 Milwaukee Brewers - Leading in strikeouts and defense the Brewers have played well to start. Jeff Cirillo and JJ Hardy may not be household names but have helped the Crew offense to a good start. 1954 Cincinnati Red Legs - Injuries have hit the Redlegs a bit but they still won 15 games. including nine at home and two in extras. Ted Kluszewski has been on fire with 25 RBI and nine home runs. 1905 Boston Beaneaters - Only 5 wins in the month in what will likely be a very long season. Tied for last in runs and a defense that leaves alot of outs on the field. One hundred losses may be coming. |

The blub is 21-9 at the load Sky Dome and is an impressive 16-6 in one run games. 1912 Chicago Cubs - Tops in the league in runs and average including OPS, the Chicago offense has been leading with Franck Schulte continuing his MVP pace (.312/22/54). Most feel Chicago will right the ship and chase down the Jays. 1996 New York Mets - Mets are still playing good baseball as Lance Johnson is hitting .320 at the top of the order and Jason Isringhausen is now a perfect 8-0. 1903 Chicago White Sox - The loss of Nixey Callahan wont help a Sox team that cant really hit to begin with. Even more troublesome has been Chicago pitching that has a 4.62 starters ERA. 1920 Cleveland Indians - The champions went 21-8 in May making everyone forget their slow start. Ray Caldwell and Elmer Myers had great months on the mound and Tris Speaker is up to .320 with 42 runs. It is also good to see Ray Chapman playing well. 1992 Philadelphia Phillies - Darren Daulton hit .330 for the month and Lenny Dykstra still leads the entire league in WAR as the Phils try and stay in the race. Philly pitching has been the issue as their pen ERA sits at 5.06 2012 Los Angeles Dodgers - The Pythagorean record of this club is much worse then their record. Yes Clayton Kershaw is great but Dodger hitting is in the tank with the least runs in the league and only one batter (Matt Kemp) hitting over .260. 1927 Boston Braves - The season is getting away from the Braves with nothing to really lean on. Johnny Werts has already lost 10 games and Dan Bancroft is hitting just .195 1972 Los Angeles Dodgers - A ten game winning streak has the Dodgers in first. At total of 350 runs and 82 home runs are tops in the NL and the 5 game margin over the mighty A's has many really taking notice heading to the All Star break. 1928 Philadelphia Athletics - The A's are not playing bad winning 17 games in June but the Dodgers are just hotter. Forty one year old Ty Cobb is hitting .325 at the top of the order while Lefty Grove turned it on in June winning pitcher of the month with 6 wins. 1947 Cincinnati Reds - Not enough offensive power for the Reds who are last in slugging and home runs. Ewell Blackwell is carrying the rotation and should make the All Star game but the remainder of the staff has been hit hard. 2022 Detroit Tigers - Only 9 wins in June but any real hope for this club away. They are first in stolen bases to many peoples surprise but the overall hitting has not been good enough. Starter Tyler Alexander has a 10.22 ERA in the month and is still in the rotation. 2021 Toronto Blue Jays - The best pennant race is in the west where the Jays are getting great starting pitching including from Alex Manoah who has a 1.35 ERA in his last three starts. The team has a .350 OBP and leads the league in average at .286. 2005 Milwaukee Brewers - The Crew were swept at Rogers Center to end the month but they are still only two back in the race. Carlos Lee has 10 home runs hitting .364 and the Milwaukee team defense has been best in the league. 1954 Cincinnati Red Legs - The Reds had a winning month and are only five back playing better baseball then most thought. They hammer left handed pitching but real holes in their rotation likely will see a farther slide from them. 1905 Boston Beaneaters - Eleven wins heading into July as the Beaneaters look to set a standard for losing baseball. There are really no bright spots as the Beans are 4-29 away from home and are 0-6 in extra inning games. Ugly isnt a strong enough word. |

Pitcher of the month Jimmy Key proving he is a real ace with 11 win already. John Olerud has 67 RBI. 1912 Chicago Cubs - Frank Chance is still confident his club can in the end prevail in the division. Charlie Smith and Claude Hendrix have combined for 23 wins while the Cubs defense is first in run prevention. 1996 New York Mets - After a good start closer John Franco has run into some trouble and on offense the Mets are the slowest team in the league on the bases. Still The Mets are sitting with a winning record. 1903 Chicago White Sox - Seven wins for the second consecutive month and the White Sox can taste 100 losses. This team is 7-35 away from home and is last in OPS. 1920 Cleveland Indians - Almost 500 runs for the season the Indians have pulled away in the division after winning 42 games over the last two months. The club is first in WoBa and first in pitching ERA plus. The tribe could cruise to the pennant. 1992 Philadelphia Phillies - Darren Daulton should be a sure fire all star at catcher with 14 home runs and 59 RBI. Lenny Dykstra is hitting .321 with 31 steals but the Indians seem to be just too good to catch. 2012 Los Angeles Dodgers - The Dodgers just cant score enough runs and are hitting .230 as a team. Chris Capuano is 1-11 as a starter and a 6-21 June was a disaster. 1927 Boston Braves - A winning month for Boston and they really feel they can pull out of the cellar. Charlie Robertson continues his good season as the ace with 11 wins and Jack Fournier already has 2.5 WAR. 1972 Los Angeles Dodgers - A real fight in this division as Walter Alston feels his young Dodgers can win the flag. Don Sutton leads a good rotation but it is the Dodger hitting lead by the ancient wonder Frank Robinson, who is hitting .338/.450/.613 that is really something. 1928 Philadelphia Athletics - Tops in team ERA and strikeouts, Connie Mack will say that he feels his team has the better talent then the Dodgers. Mickey Cochrane has 18 home runs and Jimmie Foxx 15 while A's baserunning is tops in the league. 2022 Detroit Tigers - Ninety one stolen bases is first in the league in a surprise for these Tigers. Miguel Cabrera however is hitting just 5 for his las 29 while the backend of the Detroit rotation is a mess. 1947 Cincinnati Reds - The loss of Johnny Van Der Meer for the season is a big blow for this club. Eddie Miller has 14 home runs but the club depends too much on the long ball. 2005 Milwaukee Brewers - The Crew have played consistent and pass the Jays by three games. The Brewers pen is quite good while Geoff Jenkins has 59 RBI heading into July. 2021 Toronto Blue Jays - A 17 loss month cost Toronto first place including playing poorly against the Brewers. Vlad Guerrero has been on fire hitting .375 for the month but the arms need to improve as Robbie Ray and Alex Manoah struggled. 1954 Cincinnati Red Legs - Holding at .500, the Red Legs are only 6 games off the lead. Gus Bell has team with Ted Kluszewski for a fearsome tandem but no real table setter hurts. 1905 Boston Beaneaters - A club that has been tough to watch in every aspect of the game. Jim Delahanty and Pat Moran, who have combined for 27 home runs, are the one and only thing worth watching. |

The Jays are really hot under Cito Gaston and are starting to believe they can hold off Chicago. 1912 Chicago Cubs - Chicago will not panic but stay the course. Frank Schulte is the first to 30 home runs and 90 RBI as Chicago has a league best 131 home runs and stolen bases with 192. 1996 New York Mets - A good season may not be good enough in such a tough division. Lack of speed hurts the club but catcher Todd Hundley remains hot with 20 home runs and Lance Johnson his hitting .323 with 64 runs scored. 1903 Chicago White Sox - Davey Dunkle has already lost 20 games and the Sox may have 4 arms that end with more then that number. Fielder Jones has hit .522 in his last 12 games. 1920 Cleveland Indians - A flat out run away for the Tribe who lead the division by 17 games. First in almost every offensive catagory, Elmer Smith has 96 RBI for a club that has 614 runs. Stan Coveleski already has 18 wins. 1992 Philadelphia Phillies - The Phillies played the Indians 6 times in July and lost all six of them. The club doesn't have the depth especially pitching and should just have the goal to finish with a winning record. 2012 Los Angeles Dodgers - A terrible season in LA as the Dodgers offense has fallen apart. Clayton Kershaw is still fun to watch going 2-0 with a 1.90 ERA in his last three starts. The team has scored 362 measley runs. 1927 Boston Braves - Eight wins in July the Braves may be ready to pack it in. Jack Fournier leads the club with 15 home runs and 55 RBI with Jimmy Welsh the only other hitter with a OPS+ over 100. 1972 Los Angeles Dodgers - The fight for this division is what makes baseball great. The Dodgers have some concerns in their pen with no real closer on the club but the bats are alive and well; Bill Buckner hitting .326 at the age of 22. 1928 Philadelphia Athletics - Most still expect this team to take the division. Jimmie Foxx had an incredible month as did George Earnshaw. The A's are 16-7 in one run games and Howard Ehmke has 26 saves. 1947 Cincinnati Reds - The offense cooled off as the weather heated up but the Reds have earned respect especially at home. Ted Kluszewski has only 9 home runs after a hot start to the year. 2022 Detroit Tigers - The Tiger pen has been a mess as the club followed up a winning June with a losing July. The Tigers lead in stolen bases with 4 players over 15 steals. Tarik Skubal has been hot with a 1.95 ERA in his last 15 starts. 2005 Milwaukee Brewers - The Brewers hold on to the division lead and they have done it with a strong pen and a rotation that gets alot of whiffs. Ben Sheets has a 9 K/9 and the club is 11-2 in extra inning games. 1954 Cincinnati Redlegs - Seventeen wins in July and only 4 games back, Reds fans are starting to believe. Joe Nuxhall has been a credited ace with a 14-7 record and a 2.77 ERA. while the middle of the Cincy lineup is poison for opposing pitchers. 2021 Toronto Blue Jays - The Jays are only 5 back and are just one hot streak of making a real run. The injury to Alex Manoah is of concern but the offense has carried well with Lourdes Gurriel hitting .450 in his last 7 games. The team has bashed 158 home runs going into August. 1905 Boston Beaneaters - Four wins in July and a historic pace for losses the Beaneaters have no pitching or defense, two things a bit crucial to be missing in the game of baseball. |

The Jays swept Chicago at Skydome and should have enough cushion in the division despite a three game trip to Chicago this month. Juan Guzman and Dave Stieb have had great finishes to the season as the Toronto rotation is really what is leading the way. The Jays just have to avoid a major crash and they will be set for an unexpected title this fall. American League West It is all Indians and more Indians. Tris Speaker has taken his game to an entirely new level as the Indians lead their race by over 20 games and have a magic number of only 4. Speaker is hitting .333 with 101 runs scored while Elmer Smith has driven in 116 runs. Stan Coveleski is 24-7 with a 2.32 ERA making him the odds on favorite for the Cy Young award. The Indians can rest and prepare for the post season after a runaway season in which this Cleveland side has proven why they are truly championship caliber. Finishing with the best record in the league is another likely goal for them as is approaching 1000 runs scored. National League East The 1928 Athletics and 1972 Dodgers continue to tussle in what has been a ballroom dance all season long. The Athletics take the division lead heading into September but the winner will be decided on the field as these teams face off 6 times in the month including a season closing three game series at Dodger Stadium. Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons have been finishing the season strong while for the Dodgers Don Sutton won the pitching award for August and looks solid along side Tommy John. This race has had it all including great managing by two Hall of Famers in Walter Alston and Connie Mack. OOTP likes the Athletics to win the division at an 81.0% percent rate. National League West The 2021 Blue Jays won 19 games in September and are rolling into September having cut the division lead on the 2005 Brewers to 2 games. Bo Bichette has hit .457 in his last 10 games and Robbie Ray has gone 3-1 with a 2.10 mark in his last 4. The Brewers have kept playing winning baseball but Prince Fielder is sidelined with a strained oblique and he may miss at least half of September. The two teams face off six times this month including a all telling three game set at Miller Park to end the season. Not to be overlooked, The 1954 Redlegs lead by player of the month Ted Kluszewski, are still just 8 games back and are hoping for a miracle. |

The 1928 Athletics came into the last three games tied with the 1972 Dodgers and won the first two games at Dodger Stadium to clinch the postseason, including coming from behind and scoring 4 runs in the ninth for the clincher. Connie Mack had to be happy with his team's effort and contribution as the battle with the Dodgers was intense and confrontational all season long. Now the strong roster goes to the NLDS lead by some of the best names in the game. Al Simmons won the batting title and and drove in 125 runs as the offense lead the league with 886 runs. Lefty Grove struck out 322 batters but it was Jack Quinn who went 26-9 to pace the A's staff. Mickey Cochrane hit .391 in the last 10 games of the season and goes into the postseason red hot. Forty one year old Ty Cobb is sure to leave his mark in the playoffs as well, he finished the year hitting .319. The 2005 Brewers won 16 games in September and held a two game lead on the 2022 Jays as the final weekend started. The Brewers wasted no time clinching the division on Friday night and culminating a fine season with 95 wins. Craig Counsell could be confident in his team that played well down the stretch lead by a dominant bullpen. Rick Helling had 31 saves with a 3.13 ERA. Prince Fielder is healthy again and his presence is huge in the order. Geoff Jenkins drove in 100 runs while the Brewers defense made the fewest errors in the league. Ben Sheets threw 320 innings and finished with 18 wins as he anchors the staff. The Brewers were 13-2 in extra inning games and seem to play their best when the stakes are highest. The two clubs faced off 24 times during the season with Milwaukee winning 14 of them. Lead by the dynamic player manager Tris Speaker, the Indians look like a sure bet and the all out favorites to claim the title of season 1. The Tribe had three 20 game winners lead by Stan Coveleski who won the pitching triple crown with a 27-9 record and a 2.24 ERA. The club scored 890 runs as Speaker hit .348 with 118 runs while Elmer Smith drove in 131. It was great to see Ray Chapman finish the season and play outstanding defense at third base for a team that went 28-12 against left handed pitching. The 1991 Blue Jays will be no strangers to being underdogs as they won the East by outpacing the favored 1912 Cubs and winning it by 5 games. Cito Gaston had his team believing and the Jays played particularly well at Sky Dome. The club is anchored around its great defensive play with Devon White and Roberto Alomar controlling the middle of the field. John Olerud drove in 113 runs and the team stole more bases then hit home runs. The ace of the staff was Jimmy Key who went 21-11 with a 2.77 ERA and will be the perfect confident ace to face the Indians. Duane Ward had to be the closer of the year with 44 saves and a 2.71 ERA. The Jays were 37-17 in one run games this year. In their matchups this season the Indians held the edge with a 13-11 record but all the games between them were competetive. Post Season Edition National League Championship Series Attachment 1017668 Simmons Carries Athletics Philadelphia Defeats Milwaukee In Four Games Al Simmons continues to grow his case for league MVP as his 11 RBI helped carry the 1928 Philadelphia Athletics to the pennant defeating the 2005 Milwaukee Brewers in six games. Milwaukee took the opening game but Jack Quinn quickly righted the ship winning game two 2-1. In a similar spot, Lefty Grove pitched a shutout in game four to again tie the series. Simmons hit a three run home run in game five and two home runs in game six as the Athletics were determined to move on. The Brewers likely deserved better but the margin of error in the post season is indeed miniscule. American League Championship Series Attachment 1017669 Blue Jays Stun Indians Toronto Make It Look Easy In 5 Games Postseason baseball truly can not be scripted. The 1991 Toronto Blue Jays overrun the 1920 Cleveland Indians in five games pushing aside the 105 win club. A 10-2 romp in the opening game by Toronto set the tone and the Juan Guzman pitched outstanding as the Jays took both game in Cleveland. After losing game three big, the Jays wrapped the series up at home beating Stan Coveleski twice in the process. Devon White was named the MVP hitting .333 with 9 RBI while David Wells won two games allowing 2 earned runs in 15 innings. "There is something special about this club" says manager Cito Gaston. Now the World Series awaits them. |

Athletics Rally And Are First Champions Of Season 1 https://i.pinimg.com/236x/b4/c2/ac/b...96b7b908cc.jpg In a series that lived up to all the billing, it was the 1928 Philadelphia Athletics who came from a 1-3 game deficit in the series to win in seven games. Al Simmons was named MVP but many thought it was the heart of Lefty Grove that helped the Athletics find a way to survive and win. Simmons hit .448 in series and drove in 8 bit Grove struck out 29 in 23 innings winning two games, including game seven. Here is a quick recap of the seven games. Game 1 In Philadelphia Jimmy Dykes hit a two run home run and Lefty Grove struck out seven in a good pitching matchup with Juan Guzman. Each side only had three hits but the Dykes homer in the 7th broke a 1-1 tie and gave Connie Mack and his side the opener. Game 2 in Philadelphia After letting up three runs in the bottom of the first, Jimmy Key settled down and helped navigate a 6-3 victory for the Jays to tie the series. Devon White drove in two and Roberto Alomar made some sparkling defensive plays as the series moves to Canada. Game 3 In Toronto Devon White came through again in a big way as Toronto was on fire at the Skydome to take the series lead. White drove in four runs and Duane Ward shut the door as it became obvious that the Jays were more then capable of winning the series. Game 4 In Toronto Rene Gonzales singled in the bottom of the 10th to walk off another Blue Jays win and break the hearts of the A's. Dave Stieb comes in the game in relief and pitches two clutch innings to get the win and Roberto Alomar has three hits and scores two runs. Game 5 In Toronto Six outs away from a championship the Jays lead the A's 5-1 heading into the 8th inning. The Athletics would not quit and rallied for 4 runs behind a bases clearing hit by Ty Cobb. In the 9th the Athletics took the series home scoring three more runs in what was a telling collapse by the Toronto team and bullpen. Game 6 In Philadelphia An offensive show at Shibe Park as the Athletics opened up a 9-0 lead but the Jays scored six times in the 6th inning to make a game of it. Jimmy Dykes hit two home runs and Al Simmons drove in three as the confident A's scored 14 runs in a barrage of offense to force a game seven. Game 7 In Philadelphia It was Lefty Grove's night at the star threw a complete game shutout and the offense supported him with 8 runs with Simmons again coming through going 3-3 with a home run. The spirit of the Jays seemed to have left them completely, and Connie Mack celebrated the fantastic resolve and effort of his club CHAMPIONS SEASON 1 1928 PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS Attachment 1017847 Attachment 1017791 Attachment 1017792 |

Earl Williams made history with 4 home runs in one game and Dusty Baker is hitting .356 with 6 homers to start the season. Henry Aaron has 7 early home runs. 2. 1925 Philadelphia Athletics - Just as he did in season 1, Al Simmons is off to a hot start with 6 home runs and 4 steals as the A's sit around .500. Starting pitching needs work with an early 4.77 ERA. 3. 1977 Chicago White Sox - Not the best April for the Sox, especially with their bats. A .691 OPS with only 22 home runs will have to improve. Dave Frost off to a hot start already 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA. On the other hand, pen has not looked good. 4. 1995 Detroit Tigers - Losing your ace in April with a bad finger injury will really hamper the Tigers chances as David Wells is on the shelf. Mike Henneman leads a capable pen while on offense Bobby Higginson drove in an impressive 26 runs in the month. American League West 1. 1987 Philadelphia Phillies - The Phillies look like they mean business in the division. Mike Schmidt has been electric as player of the month while a Maddux, Mike not Greg, pitched lights out with a 1.17 ERA in 4 starts. Von Hayes has 9 home runs and a new confidence, are the 87 Phillies for real? 2. 2015 Boston Red Sox - The top batting average in the league at .288 with 22 year old Mookie Betts hitting .410 in April. Koji Uhera has 6 saves without giving up a run but it is the Boston starters that will tell the tale of this team, Clay Buchholz has struggled out of the gate. 3. 1924 Washington Senators - Walter Johnson has a 4.75 ERA but still holds legends status as the Senators started well. They have the most runs in the league as Goose Goslin and Joe Judge have combined for 43 RBI and are tough in the middle of the order. Team defense could surely improve. 4. 1929 Boston Braves - Only 86 runs in April and 8 wins in a division that is running away, the Braves may be poised for a long season. Ed Brandt pitched well as the ace for the most part but the lack of any offense has this team searching. National League East 1. 2012 Toronto Blue Jays - First in home runs the Jays are holding on to first in the division. The starting pitching has been poor but a good pen has picked them up in what will likely be a tight race. Jose Bautista has smacked 8 home runs. 2. 1912 St. Louis Cardinals A .750 OPS and the most runs in the league the Cards are winning in unexpected ways. Starter Slim Sallee has had a poor start but Pol Perritt has stepped up with a 152 ERA+ to start the year. 3. 1942 Cincinnati Reds - Finishing at .500 for the month the Reds are only a game out. Bucky Walters won pitcher of the month with some excellent control but the team has only 11 home runs. Lonney Frey is quite the talent at the top of the order hitting .343 with 20 runs. 4. 2002 Los Angeles Dodgers - Kevin Brown and Hideo Nomo have been hammered early as the Dodgers are off to a sketchy start. Adrian Beltre is doing with the glove and the bat with 15 RBI. Still Eric Gagne has blown some leads and there are more questions early then answers. National League West 1. 1983 Philadelphia Phillies - The best record in the league as April ends their seems to be real intrigue for this club. Mike Schmidt is the power bat everyone expects with 11 HR but Von Hayes looks like he is from another planet and Steve Carlton has started off strong at 38 years old. 2. 1968 New York Mets - The Mets won 5 of 6 to start the season and Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman have combined for 7 wins. Tommie Agee is hitting .348 while Art Shamsky has 6 HR. Gil Hodges might create a miracle this season in this division. 3. 1931 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Bucs pitching has been murdered to start the year with a team ERA near 6. The team isnt hitting either with a .231 mark but the likes of Pie Traynor and Paul Waner surely will get hot at some point. 4. 1907 Boston Americans - Another deadball era team struggling with only 8 wins in the month. The club has hit leading the league with a .274 average but the Americans are 1-9 away from home and 1-11 in one run games. |

The outfielder is on fire again this year winning player of the month honors. Connie Mack's team won 20 games in May and have built a cushion in the division. 1972 Atlanta Braves - Atlanta fell to earth in May still trying to fill the hole of injured Orlando Cepeda. Henry Aaron is having fine year with 16 home runs and 46 RBI but the likes of Phil Niekro are struggling as the knuckler has lost 8 games with a 4.88 ERA. 1977 Chicago White Sox - Searching for answers in their pen, the Sox it appears have turned to Steve Stone as their closer. Brian Downing is hot hitting .409 for the month but the Sox lineup lacks muscle and the team in sixth in the league in OPS with .694. 1955 Detroit Tigers - David Wells is battling some hamstring issues as Detroit has lost its roar and sit 15 games out. Thirty eight year old Lou Whitaker has 12 home runs and a resurgent year but Tony Phillips hit .086 in his last 7 games including a 0-23 streak. American League West 1924 Washington Senators - Walter Johnson has 9 wins in 2 months and is throwing hard again as the Senators pace in first place. Goose Goslin has 46 RBI already while Joe Judge is hitting .320 in a balanced offense. Joe Matina has 10 saves but the loss of Chick Gagnon through concussion hurts the defense. 2015 Boston Red Sox - Positioning themselves well, the Red Sox had another winning month. Travis Shaw has been muscle for them with 14 home runs and 44 driven in. Koji Uehara has 13 saves and a 2.28 ERA. Boston believes in can win this division. 1987 Philadelphia Phillies Also hanging tough are these Phillies with Mike Maddux continuing to lead the rotation with a 190 ERA+ and Todd Frohwirth taking over the closer job from Steve Bedrosian and looking good doing it. The Phils are 7-1 in extra inning games. 1929 Boston Braves - A better month for the Braves as they played .500 ball and were better offensively. The club still is last in runs in the league but Johnny Cooney and Pat Collins finished the month strong. The road will be a long one and playing .500 ball should be a realistic goal. National League East 2002 Los Angeles Dodgers - The division is super tight with no team having a winning record. Adrian Beltre leads LA with a .323 average but the club hasn't shown much punch. The pen has been the real mess as Eric Gagne needs to step aside as the club is 2-8 in one run games. 1942 Cincinnati Reds - The Reds want to believe they can win this but can hit out of a paper bag. Their pitching has remained steady with Paul Derringer and Johnny Van Dermeer a good duo. The offense is flat out bad, last in almost every offensive catagory in the league. 2012 Toronto Blue Jays - The Jays had a losing month and are 12-17 away from home. No value really out of their starting pitching as they hold a 5.45 ERA with no ace in the rotation. Brett Laurie and Jose Bautista are among a group making a well balanced offense. In this division however, maybe there is hope. 1912 St. Louis Cardinals - Only 2 games back the Cardinals are making some noise. Ed Konetchy is hitting .381 in the las week of the season and Rube Ellis found a way to hit 11 home runs. Joe Willis is the only starter with a winning record and with all their flaws St. Louis fits right in with the division foes. National League West 1983 Philadelphia Phillies - The best record in baseball for the Phils as Mike Schmidt won his second player of the month award. The Phillies offense leads in most all categories for the league with a .775 OPS. Larry Chistenson has been brilliant going 9-1 with a 2.72 ERA On the other hand veteran Steve Carlton is bagging a 7.84 ERA in his last 5 starts. 1968 New York Mets - The Mets are holding 10 games over .500 as the young Nolan Ryan has been added to the rotation and looks great with a 1.89 ERA. The Mets have allowed the fewest runs in the league thanks to some great defense to support a weak offense. Tommie Agee is hitting .300 with 12 HR from the leadoff spot. 1907 Boston Americans - Cy Young has a losing record but a solid 2.72 ERA and Jesse Tannehill has stepped up in relief. Jimmy Barrett is the only regular hitting over .300 while Hobe Ferris has hit nine home runs. 1931 Pittsburgh Pirates - Much more was expected from this club but they are falling like a leaf. Ray Kremer has an ERA over 7 while the pen has been short and ineffective. Five players on offense have over 25 RBI and scored over 20 runs lead by the Waner brothers. The hole in Pittsburgh however likely is too steep. Larry French did bring a thrill with a no hitter against Boston this month. |

Al Simmons has all eyes on him as he enters July with a .402 average. Rube Walberg and Slim Harriss have both won 11 games. The club leads the league in strikeouts with 553. 1972 Atlanta Braves - The Braves had both the batter and pitcher of the month in the league. Dusty Baker has been brilliant with both him and Henry Aaron sitting on 70 RBI a piece. Phil Niekro had a 1.69 ERA for the month making up for a slow spring. Can the Braves make a real run at the Athletics? 1977 Chicago White Sox - Stuck in neutral the Sox can seem to get on a roll. The starters have been good with a 3.73 ERA but the pen has not with no one really dependable. The Sox are 15-26 away from the South side and in truth don't really have good team chemistry or an obvious lead voice. 1995 Detroit Tigers - The Tigers offense has sputtered hitting just .234 as manufacturing runs has been an issue. The pitching has not been much better as Tiger Stadium has played like a sandbox for the rotation and their team defense has looked old and slow. American League West 1924 Washington Senators - A losing month for Washington has made the division tight. Last in home runs makes big innings rare although the club rarely strikes out. The Senator defense has been excellent keeping them in games with Muddy Ruel especially strong behind the plate. The Senators have allowed the fewest runs in the league thus far at 331. 2015 Boston Red Sox - The Sox really believe they can win this thing. They are tops in steals and have a 17.1 batting WAR lead by Mookie Betts who has a 138 OPS+. Koji Uehera has won the close ones saving 18 games already as John Farrell has pulled the right strings to win close games. 1987 Philadelphia Phillies - It has been pitching for the Phillies behind the bat of Mike Schmidt that has them only a half game out. The Phils are 10-2 in extra inning games and have yet to have a losing month. Mike Maddux is 11-3 and Bruce Ruffin in 8-1; can they continue that kind of production? 1929 Boston Braves - Fewest runs in the league and the lowest wOBA the Braves arnt scaring anyone. The defense lead by veteran Rabbit Marranville has helped a pitching staff that has been betrayed by a poor bullpen. The Braves can only hope for respectability going forward. National League East 1942 Cincinnati Reds - Paul Derringer heated up in June and will likely be an allstar as the Reds are holding on in a weak division. The team has hit just 50 home runs in three months but they put the ball in play and play opportunistic baseball. 2002 Los Angeles Dodgers - Eric Gagne leads the best pen in the league while Hideo Nomo and Kevin Brown headline a rotation that lacks depth beyond the top three. Still the Dodgers are ready for a race hitting .268 with a .327 wOBA as a club. 1912 St. Louis Cardinals - After a decent April, the Cardinals have really come back to earth. They lead the league in steals with 167 and do have a good run total but the obvious issue has been pitching. A winning record the club is 15-29 away from home and 9-17 in one run games. 2012 Toronto Blue Jays - Nine wins in June was anchored by the worst FIP in the league at 4.43 and a real lack of getting on base. There are some bopers in the lineup in Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista who have combined for 32 home runs, but in between long ones are big droughts. The starters have a 5.20 ERA and the pen cant close a game to save their life with 6 saves combined for the season. National League West 1983 Philadelphia Phillies - Kiko Garcia is hitting .486 in his last 11 games and John Denny took home pitcher of the month honors upping his record to 12-4. The Phils lead in most offensive categories with even lead off man Joe Morgan driving in 52 runs while scoring the same number. Philly has really had a dream season thus far and their lead in the division is a healthy 8.5 games. 1968 New York Mets - Tom Seaver is 12-6 and pitching like you would expect and the Mets defense is tops in the league in most counting categories. Still the Mets cant keep pace as the offense has been average despite Cleon Jones hitting .350. It will have to be a red hot summer for the Miracles to put pressure on the Phillies. 1931 Pittsburgh Pirates - After a disaster in May, the Pirates played the ball they expected in June but the damage has already been done. Adam Comorosky has 13 home runs and a .305 average and the Waner brothers are hitting again. The team is last in strikeouts with 362 and first in errors with 74. 1907 Boston Americans - Cy Young is 7-10 with a 3.06 ERA but Joe Harris had a tough month as the rest of the rotation has fallen off. The rest of the club is stumped by a weak offense that has a .673 OPS. The Americans are 13-29 on the road. |

Al Simmons has cooled off to .360 but Lefty Grove has remained on point, now with 190 strikeouts and 12 wins. Still the A's need to prepare themselves for a race to the finish. 1972 Atlanta Braves - George Stone went down with an injury and Jimmy Freeman has come into the rotation and looked good. Henry Aaron has hit 30 home runs and 90 RBI already with 2 months to play proving his resolve to lead the club. Phil Niekro needs to be better and if all goes well, the Braves feel they can win it. 1977 Chicago White Sox - Even as they hosted the All Star Game, the Sox managed only 9 wins in the month and are now 15 games back. The offense really fell apart as a .245 team average wont cut it. The Sox were swept in four games in Atlanta, really showing two teams going in opposite directions. 1995 Detroit Tigers - Also winning only 9 games, Sparky Anderson has not been able to get the most out of this team. David Wells continues to pitch well with a 1.06 ERA in his last two starts but Milt Cuyler and Danny Bautista are a combined 4 for 48 as the offense remains in the tank. American League East 1924 Washington Senators - Finally the favorites are playing like it again as a hot July has taken them back to the top of the division. The month included a sweep of the Braves and more importantly one of the 1987 Phillies. Goose Goslin and Bucky Harris are on fire with Goslin going 20 for 36 with now a .314 average and 87 RBI. A tight pennant race with Boston awaits and the Senators appear ready. 2015 Boston Red Sox - Nineteen wins for Boston as they keep pace with Washington and make it a two team race. David Ortiz had a big month hitting over .400 while Dustin Pedroia is now hitting .351 and is at his very best. Clay Buchholz won pitcher of the month honors as he has turned his season around and now has 15 wins. 1987 Philadelphia Phillies - Sixty wins for the Phillies but that is still keeping them 7 games back. The Phils have yet to prove they can beat the big clubs and that will need to change if a late run is possible. Todd Frohwirth and Steve Bedrosian have established one if not the best pen in the game. Still the offense appears old and unable to sustain itself for the season. 1929 Boston Braves - The Braves unfortunately have been heading in the wrong direction with 7 wins in July. The offense has only gotten worse with George Harper the only bright spot as the first baseman has had a fine year with 19 HR and a .802 OPS. The Braves are 9-30 versus leftys and lead the league in being shutout. National League East 2002 Los Angeles Dodgers - The Dodgers are fortunate to be in the weakest division in the league. Odalis Perez had a good month and emerged as the need third starter. Shawn Green is up to 24 homers while Adrian Beltre is hitting .320 for the club that leads the league in batting average. Still the club is slow and the defense average, but they may still be enough to win the division. 1942 Cincinnati Reds - A four game sweep at the hands of the Dodgers in LA was part of a broken down month where the Reds now sit 6 games under .500. All is not lost yet for the club but they need to turn the ship around fast. The offense just has shut down and the bottom of the order especially has produced nothing but automatic outs. Eddie Joost is hitting .210 and Damon Phillips is 3 for his last 22. 1912 St. Louis Cardinals - The Cardinals are only seven games back in this division despite their record. Slim Sallee has found his groove as one of the best control pitchers in the game and has won 10 games along with Pol Perritt. Rube Ellis has 74 RBI and Ed Konetchy another 71 for an offense that is a surprising second in scoring runs. The Cards have also stolen 210 bases to lead the league keeping their small ball reputation. Lee Magee has swiped 31 bases. 2012 Toronto Blue Jays - Jose Bautista won batter of the month honors and now has 80 RBI with 23 homers. The Jays are first with 111 home runs but the pitching just cant get things right. Ricky Romero has already lost 18 games and the club has allowed 605 runs and a FIP of 4.57. We have seen however, in this division, anything maybe possible. National League West 1993 Philadelphia Phillies - The Phillies continue to be a wrecking ball in the West and are looking to end the race sooner then later. Steve Carlton is in a groove and took player of the month honors as he is sitting on 206 strikeouts for the season. Mike Schmidt has 33 home runs and is hoping to land around 50 while Bo Diaz has impressed with 72 RBI. The Phils are experienced and focused on a single goal, and they are making it look easy in the process. 1968 New York Mets - There is no wild card in the process so the Mets would truly need a miracle to make a run at the post season. Nolan Ryan is throwing hard and holds a 2.86 ERA in 17 starts while Tom Seaver threw two shutouts to end the month. Clean Jones is playing in another universe hitting .368 and coming off of a 30 game hitting streak. The Mets are an incredible 40-15 at home and will get the 83 Phillies three times at Shea in August. The Mets are tops in defensive efficiency at .734. 1931 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Bucs are now 17 games under .500 and may well be packing it in but they do have to fight the Americans for last place. The bullpen has been in shambles as Glenn Spencer was lit up for a 9.72 ERA in the month among others. The loss of Larry French hasn't helped the rotation putting the offense under pressure. Adam Comorosky has done his part leading the team with a .305 average but it is the hall of famers like the Waners and Pie Traynor that have been good but not great. 1907 Boston Americans - Last in runs and offense the Americans can pitch themselves to a win here and there. A .669 team OPS is just not good enough at this level and the strains of the modern game seem to have gotten the most of this club. The Americans played .500 baseball in May and look to have a winning month before the season is over. |

August Attachment 1022583 Awards Batter of the month AL: Mookie Betts (2015 Red Sox) Batter of the month NL - Frank McCormick (1942 Reds) Pitcher of the month AL - Francisco Barrios (1977 White Sox) Pitcher of the month NL - Cy Young (1907 Americans American League East 1925 Philadelphia Athletics - The Athletics have held their own heading into the final stretch. Their pitching is lead by Rube Walberg and Lefty Grove for a staff that leads in strikeouts with 907. Al Simmons gets all the headlines but Mickey Cochrane is the heart of the club with 20 homers and 78 RBI and outstanding catching. Its the A's division to lose. 1972 Atlanta Braves - If the club could get any kind of pitching they would be in a much better spot. The team ERA is around 5 and too many games have been high scoring affairs. Hank Aaron has 40 long ones for a club that has hit 179 already. The Braves will play three against the Athletics at Fulton County Stadium the last week of the season. 1977 Chicago White Sox - A strong month from the White Sox who wo 18 games. Although players will never give up, it is surely too late for the Sox who will try to be spoilers. Steve Stone has imploded in his role as closer and the rotation is being pushed to longer outings on close games. Seven players in the Chicago lineup are up and over 50 RBI's heading into September. 1995 Detroit Tigers - Limping to the final month the Tigers can expect over 100 losses. The offense never came together despite good individual performances by the likes of Bobby Higginson who hit .435 for the month of August. Scott Aldred was torched this month proving that the lack of depth in this rotation is why the Tigers are no where near competitive. American League West 2015 Boston Red Sox - Boston finished the month up strong and are holding off the Senators by two games. Rick Pocello has a 19-6 record and is making his case for the Cy Young. Jackie Bradley is back in the lineup after injury and had a red hot month along with Xander Bogaerts who is hitting a robust .342 on the season. The Red Sox finish the season with a series in Washington which could be for all the marbles. 1924 Washington Senators - Walter Johnson went 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA in the month but the Senators had a losing record in August and are now playing catchup. Goose Goslin has hit 25 of the 88 team home runs and pitchers are choosing to throw around him and no one has really picked up the slack. Building confidence heading down the stretch shouldn't be a problem for a club that has won it all. 1987 Philadelphia Phillies - Refusing to roll over and die, the Phils won 16 games in August and are still six games out with an outside chance to make a late run. Where Mike Maddux learned how to pitch like his brother isnt clear, but the Phillies arms are what has this team 15 games over .500. Milt Thompson has stole 31 bases and the team has 80 total, and John Felske has used any means necessary to score runs. This team has been a good story all season long. 1929 Boston Braves - Things go from bad to worst for the Braves who lost 22 games in the month. The Braves lost 10 games in a row to end the month and are still last in the league in runs scored. No starter has over 6 wins and other then Red Peery who has a 1.98 ERA, the pen has been a house of horrors. National League East 2002 Los Angeles Dodgers - Eighteen wins in August and the Dodgers have built a little bit of a cushion over the Reds. Hideo Nomo had a strong month and now has lowered his ERA to 3.15. Adrian Beltre has heated up and is up to .304 with 83 RBI's to go with his golden glove. Fianlly a team with a winning record in this division and it would prove that Los Angeles just has too much talent for their rivals. 1942 Cincinnati Reds - The Reds desperately trying to stay in the fight won 16 games in August. Paul Derringer continues to lead a good pitching staff now with 15 wins and a 2.94 ERA. Frank McCormick has 80 RBI and is hitting .313 to pace the offense but there is no real run producer on the roster. The Reds can be comended for staying in it this long, they finish the year with a four game series at Dodger Stadium and they hope to have something to play for. 2012 Toronto Blue Jays - The Jays seem to be in the mood to finish strong. Jose Bautista is up to 96 RBI while Brett Lawrie has had a good year with 31 steals already. The jays pitching continues to be a letdown and with a better set or arms this club could really be in the mix. The Jays starters have an ERA of 5.24 and have lost 50 games including 22 from Ricky Romero. 1912 St. Louis Cardinals - There have been some good stories for the Cards like Lee Magee who is hitting .317 and Rube Ellis who already has 90 RBI. The Cards also stole 263 bases and are on form for an incredible total. The overall results however have not come about and this club can only hope to finish with a nice September. Possum Whitted hit .452 in his last 20 games earning the job at short. National League West 1983 Philadelphia Phillies Their magic number now sits at eleven as the Phillies prepare for the post season and likely 100 wins. John Denny has won 21 games and Steve Carlton is right behind him. Ron Reed has 37 saves out of the pen but it is the hitting that has really bolstered the club this year. Mike Schmidt has driven in 102 already and is eyeing an MVP while Bob Dernier, Juan Samuel, and Joe Morgan has been great on the bases and scoring runs. Ony Pete Rose seems unhappy, batting only .247. 1968 New York Mets - The pitching staff for the Mets has been something to watch with young arms in Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver combining well with Jerry Koosman. The Mets will likely win 90 games this year but the Phillies just never gave them a chance. Cleon Jones continues his outstanding year and deserves MVP consideration, he had a three homer game this month and is still hitting .354 with 26 steals. 1931 Pittsburgh Pirates - Pittsburgh didnt do very much at all well this season. Their defense has let the pitching down and a lack of confidence for Bill Harris and Larry French has prompted veteran Ray Kremer to make some starts late in the year. Lloyd Waner is the only one hitting over .300 and George grantham hit .375 for the month, but the Pirates never really sustained much of anything in a lost season. 1907 Boston Americans - Cy Young will be well over 300 innings when the season ends and he has lived up to the legend of late with a 2.20 ERA in August. Last in runs the Americans were easy pickings for opposing pitching and a .297 OBP and .669 team totals say it all. The Americans did not represent the deadball era well and will try to save face by finishing strong. |

Attachment 1023208 National League Championship Series https://cdn.ssref.net/req/202408161/...r/PHI-1983.pnghttps://cdn.ssref.net/req/202408161/...r/LAD-2002.png 1983 Philadelphia Phillies (112-50) vs 2002 Los Angeles Dodgers (83-79) It would appear that this series is going to be a mismatch as the 1983 Phillies come off an incredible season winning 112 games and the pressure will be on for them to finish the job. The Phillies dominated the season series winning 13 of 17 games against the Dodgers who are coming off a very tight race to even get to the postseason. For the Phillies John Denny won 26 games and Steve Carlton struck out 292 batters throwing for over 300 innings. Mike Schmidt is sure to be the MVP with 52 home runs and 134 RBI for the season while Jeff Stone stole 90 bases along with 83 from Bobby Dernier as the club scored 884 runs. Ron Reed had 45 saves for the year and there is really no weakness that can be found in this club that put it all together. The 2002 Dodgers had to win on the last day of the season as they held off a very determined 1942 Reds team. Now the task seems daunting for a team that won only 83 games. Kevin Brown and Odalis Perez combined for 39 wins but the Dodger pen lead by Eric Gagne has been a mixed bag. Shawn Green drove in 104 and the Dodger team defense is among tops in the league. Make no mistake however, if Jim Tracy and LA can pull an upset here, the reaction may be bigger then an LA earthquake. American League Championship Series https://cdn.ssref.net/req/202408161/...r/BOS-2015.pnghttps://cdn.ssref.net/req/202408161/...r/PHA-1925.png 2015 Boston Red Sox (97-65) vs 1925 Philadelphia Athletics (90-72) Nothing more spicy then a Boston vs Philly battle to win the pennant. The 1925 Athletics are trying to match the feat of the 1928 team that took it all in season 1. Boston however has the better record and the better pedigree having won 10 of 16 vs the A's this season. Speaking of Boston, they also had a last day scare in their division race but were able to hold off the the champion 1924 Senators on the last day of the season. Rick Porcello and Clay Buchholz pitched better than anyone expected at the top of the rotation while Koji Uehara used his splitter to become the dependable closer for the side. The Red Sox scored 899 runs to league both leagues with young Mookie Betts leading the way with a 155 OPS plus and 6.9 WAR. The no DH rule has really limited David Ortiz but he has the reputation of changing the narrative in the post season. Connie Mack is a master at planning a gameplan for a post season series. The Athletics muscled their way past the 1972 Brave to win the division with once again Al Simmons leading the way with 34 home runs and a .349 average. Jimmie Foxx hit 15 home runs but is still only 17 years old and getting better everyday. Lefty Grove and Rube Walberg will make it tough on anyone and Grove can really step up in a big series game. Playoff Update Season 2
Red Sox Overwhelm Athletics Betts And Shaw Lead Boston Rush In 6 Attachment 1023362 After a hard fought opening four games of the series including losing the first two; the 2015 Red Sox woke up in a big way and won the AL pennant disposing of Connie Mack and the 1925 Athletics in six games. Surprise arm Wade Miley pitched well in both his starts but saved the best for game six where he shut out the A's 2-0 and avoided the tension of a game seven. Boston scored 14 runs in the two opening games with Xander Bogaerts serving up a walk off hit in extras of game one. Boston scored 4 runs late on the A's pen in innings 8 and 9 of game two to take command. Philadelphia responded well for games 3 and 4 as the Sox helped them with four costly errors in game three. Game four saw Rube Walberg in complete control cruising to a series tying win. However Rick Porcello turned the favor with an excellent outing in game five and Miley then slammed the door in game seven. Mookie Betts gets the MVP of the series hitting .444 with 5 RBI and six runs. Travis Shaw drove in 8 runs with a 130 OPS+ in the series. Boston did without David Ortiz who only had two at bats. The win now has the Red Sox on the biggest stage, awaiting a battle against a surging Phillies team. Barely Breaking A Sweat 1983 Phillies Continue Dominance With Win Attachment 1023363 The 1983 Phillies shocked everyone by losing game one to the 2002 Dodgers fairly handily as many thought an upset could be in the cards. Not even close as Philadelphia won the next four games to stamp their ticket to the season 2 World Series. Kevin Brown struck out 11 in the opener beating Steve Carlton and giving the Phillies a much needed wakeup call. Mike Schmidt hit a big home run in a tight game two and in game three again Philadelphia used the long ball homering three times in a 4-2 win behind Marty Bystrom. The last two games were dominant as the Phils outscored LA 16-3 as Carlton got his revenge and John Denny ended the series with a quality effort. Juan Samuel wins the MVP of the series hitting .368 with a .684 SLG and some very good defense at second. Schmidt hit .333 while Phillies pitching was excellent taking away a poor game one. The script is going as planned for this team as they prepare for the World Series, against a 97 win Red Sox team. |

Their four game sweep of the 2015 Red Sox was an expected end to a club that did everything right. Game 1 In Boston Joe Morgan and Mike Schmidt both hit two run home runs in the 8th inning to overturn a Boston lead. Hanley Ramirez had given the home side the lead in back to back affair but it was the Phillies who finished strongest roughing up Koji Uehera. Game 2 In Boston John Denny pitches into the 8th inning and overcomes a 3 RBI game from Mookie Betts as the Phillies take both games in Boston. Juan Samuel goes 4-5 including a home run while Bob Dernier and Kiko Garcia both drive in two. Rick Porcello gets the loss lasting only 4 innings. Game 3 In Philadelphia Wade Miley and Marty Bystrom battle in a tight game that remained tied at two going into the late innings. In the 9th Xander Boegarts made an error to allow Juan Samuel to get on base. Samuel manufactured the winning run on his own stealing second and heading to third on a scrafice before he scored the winning run on a wild pitch Uehara who lost jis second game. Game 4 In Philadelphia The most dramatic finish of all four games and the hero turned out to be the mighty Mike Schmidt. The teams traded home runs as Schmidt hit two of them and both sides were tied at 6 going into the 9th. Brock Holt singled in two runs for Boston and it looked as if they would avoid the sweep. In the bottom of the ninth the Phillies loaded the bases with 2 outs before Schmidt cleared the bases with a double and walked off the game and the series Schmidt had 7 RBI in the final game. Joe Deleon is 4-0 with a 1.95 ERA and the veteran Lee Smith already has 8 saves. Jose Oquendo leads the offense with a .312 average. 2018 Chicago White Sox - The Sox are three games under .500 but good enough for second place. Tim Anderson has stole 7 bases and is hitting .388 as he has carried the offense while Joakim Soria has been dominate in the pen with 7 saves and a 1.17 ERA. The Sox have won the close ones. 1971 Atlanta Braves - The Braves have not looked good as Henry Aaron carries a .194 average in April. The pitching has been worse with Phil Niekro the only dependable arm. The club cant afford not to hit for power, as they are slow on the bases. 2003 Boston Red Sox - They were suppose to compete but a pitiful April has changed the narrative. The team has scored only 81 runs and hs hit just 12 home runs. The pithing has been decent but the lack of hitting has been quite a shock. American League West 1999 Cleveland Indians - The bats are as hot as everyone expected even in April. Manny Ramirez and Roberto Alomar are hammers in the middle of the order while Dave Burba is 5-0 and Bartolo Colon won pitcher of the month honors. 1985 Baltimore Orioles - Despite an 0-6 record for starter Storm Davis, the Orioles found a way to win 15 games in April. Mike Boddicker is 5-1 with a 1.87 ERA and Eddie Murray has hit .320 with 17 RBI. Going to be tough to keep up with the Indians. 1982 New York Yankees - Ken Griffey is pacing the offense in New York hitting .335 with 17 RBI. On the opposite end Dave Winfield is hitting .095 in an incredible slump to start the year. 2014 Texas Rangers - Shin Soo Choo has started off hot hitting .344 and always on base. Adrian Beltre has also been good in support but it has been the Texas pitching that has faltered early. National League East 1988 New York Mets - Sid Fernandez and Doc Gooden are 8-1 between them while David Cone has a 2.74 ERA. The Mets won their first seven games out of the gate but cooled to see Brooklyn match them in the standings. 1914 Brooklyn Dodgers - A very nice story early in Brooklyn. Raleigh Aitchinson is 7-0 and was pitcher of the month with a 2.17 ERA while Nap Rucker is right there with him at 2.10. Zack Wheat and Jack Dalton has the offense humming and the club is 15-4 at Ebbetts Field. 1973 San Francisco Giants - Bobby Bonds has shown off his five tools at the top of the order with 14 RBI and 8 steals. The rest of the offense however has been plain bad and Tom Bradley leads a rotation that hasnt been good. 1962 Chicago Cubs - Chicago started the month 1-14 but played better ball of late including a sweep of the 1971 Braves. The Don Cardwell injury is a tough one while Ron Santo drove in 24 runs for the month. The Cubs defense has been worse in the league. National League West 1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - Honus Wagner hit .414 for the month with 27 RBI as Pittsburgh has the best record in the league. Hank Robinson and Wilbur Cooper have yet to lose a start and a 5.5 lead in the division could mean a long summer for other clubs. 1978 Baltimore Orioles - Eddie Murray had a hard month finishing 2 for 21 and the Birds hit just .229 as a club. Jim Palmer and Dennis Martinez have kept the club afloat and it is the pitching overall that should allow this club to compete. 1940 St. Louis Browns - A winning month for the Browns with closer Bill Trotter saving 8 games and looking sharp for what has been a weak pen. Harlond Clift hit .303 with 3 HR while Chat Laabs hit 5 with 18 RBI. An Encouraging start for St. Louis. 1999 St. Louis Cardinals - The offense hasnt hit and the pitching did not pick up the pace for the 11 win Cardinals. Darren OLiver and Rick Ankiel bot have ERA's under 2 but St. Louis started 1-9 on the road. |

A really impressive job by Joe Torre. 2003 Boston Red Sox - Pedro Martinez has found his form and won pitcher of the month with a 2.66 ERA. The Sox are still last in runs but Nomar Garciaparra is hitting .325 and at the height of his game. 1971 Atlanta Braves - Dusty Baker is hot hitting .447 in his last 10 and the Braves rebounded from a terrible April. Last in stolen bases and last in strikeouts, Bobby Cox will have to really earn his take if the club is to get back in the race. 2018 Chicago White Sox - Reality hit the Sox hard with 8 wins in May and a comedy of errors on defense. Michael Kopech leads a rotation that is sinking fast while Tim Anderson tries to hold the lineup together still hitting a robust .312. American League West 1999 Cleveland Indians - Roberto Alomar wears his gold glove for a reason and he is also hitting .335 in a lineup that has been scorching hot. Bartolo Colon is 6-3 and Charles Nagy has a 2.68 ERA but the division remains a tight one. 1985 Baltimore Orioles - Earl Weaver has his team believing they can overtake Cleveland. Fred Lynn at 33 years old won batter of the month while Eddie Murray is hitting .440 in the last two weeks. Mike Boddicker and Mike Flanagan lead a strong rotation while Don Aase has found his form with 16 saves as surprise closer. 1982 New York Yankees - It has been pitching that has kept the Yanks somewhat afloat as Rudy May holds an ERA of 2.12 and Shane Rawley has been even better. Dave Winfield still hitting .156 as the offense is last in average but has managed 50 steals through Willie Randolph and Jerry Mumphrey. 2014 Texas Rangers - Rougned Odor ended the month hitting just 3 for 20 while Yu Darvish hasn't been himself with a 4.56 ERA and only 68K in 11 starts. In a tough division the Rangers need a big June to build confidence. National League East 1914 Brooklyn Robins -The talk of season 3, the Robins continue to hold off the Mets in what has been a dream start in Flatbush. The Robins are hitting an even .300 as a team, way above everyone else and starter Raleigh Aitchinson is having a dream season sitting at 10-2. 1988 New York Mets - The Mets lost 2 of 3 in Brooklyn and to their own worry they seem to have a fight on their hands. Keith Hernandez is hitting .406 in limited time but both Greg Jeffries and Howard Johnson are out with injuries. The pitching has not been as strong as expected. 1972 San Francisco Giants - A very nice turnaround in May for the Giants after an 8 win April. Bobby Bonds has heated up now hitting .322 with 40 RBI. However somehow, 35 year old Juan Marichal hasnt worked out as a closer. 1962 Chicago Cubs - The Cubs just can generate much offense to compete as they have compiled only 2.8 in WAR. The Cubs are also first in errors and are 6-21 away from Wrigley Field. National League West 1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - He is hitting .441 and it is June 1st, Honus Wagner is the story of Season 3 and the Bucs hold a 44-12 record and a 14 game lead in a division that seems already done. Hank Robinson is 10-0 as a starter and we all await just how great this team can be. 1978 Baltimore Orioles - Too bad there is no Wild Card to hope for, the Orioles are fading fast behind the Pirates. A smart, well coached club that leans of pitching as Dennis Martinez won the pitcher of the month and the team ERA is 3.28. 1999 St. Louis Cardinals - A tough blow for Rick Ankiel who will miss the entire season and now the rotation is as thin as paper. mark McGwire has just 13 home runs to the surprise of many while the club average of .238 is not getting the job done. 1940 St. Louis Browns - Only seven wins in May as the Browns seem to be in for a long hot summer. Johnny Niggeling really the only dependable arm as the 5.35 team ERA is worst in the league. |

Lee Smith has 22 saves and Todd Worrell acts as a perfect setup man making the Cards tough to beat in the close ones. 1971 Atlanta Braves - Hank Aaron put together a big month and now has 21 home runs and 54 RBI including three in one game. Cecil Upshaw is the new closer and the Braves feel they are squarely still in the race but they are still two games under .500. 2003 Boston Red Sox - Pedro Martinez and Bronson Arroyo have been very good but the Red Sox offense has not. Manny Ramirez is average at best in the middle of the order with only 30 RBI going into July while David Ortiz has only seen 50 atbats hurt by the no DH rule. 2018 Chicago White Sox - Lucas Giolito has a 1.10 ERA over his last three starts and the Sox pen has been quite good headed by Joakim Soria's 19 saves. The Sox offense however is last in the league even as Avisail Garcia has driven in 50 runs. American League West 1985 Baltimore Orioles - The Orioles leap frog the Indians as their pitching staff lead by Mike Flanagan keeps getting better. The birds are 28-13 at home and took 2 out of three from Cleveland in front of a full house. 1999 Cleveland Indians - Mike Hargrove is trying to get creative in keeping his team playing its best. Thirty four year old Dwight Gooden was added to the rotation and Manny Ramirez is getting work at first base while a struggling Jim Thome, who is hitting .189 tries to find his groove. 2014 Texas Rangers - Yu Darvish has 11 wins and won pitcher of the month honors. Ranger pitching overall has been good with Colby Lewis and Derek Holland living off quality starts. The Rangers are only 4 games lout and hope is blooming in Texas. 1982 New York Yankees - The boo birds have come out in the Bronx even as this club isnt completely out of it. Rudy May and Dave Righetti has kept the opposing bats cool and Goose Gossage has 17 saves but a .681 team OPS is not justifying the big names like Winfield, Nettles, and Griffey. National League East 1914 Brooklyn Robins - A four game series at Shea stadium will be crucial this month as the Robins continue to frustrate the Mets. Red Smith is hitting .361 with 61 RBI and the team is batting .296 to lead the league. The Robins has also stole 139 bases lead by the 24 from Zack Wheat. 1988 New York Mets - Sometimes this game can be funny and the Mets are trying to find their form quickly. Unfortunately both ace Dwight Gooden and closer Randy Myers have struggled badly but the depth is there and the Mets are still expected to finish tops. No one in the lineup is hitting over .275. 1973 San Francisco Giants - Not quite ready to compete, the Giants had another down month. The Giants have only hit 50 home runs as Willie McCovey has not been the answer with 6 HR and too many outs in the middle of the order. The entire pitching side has also been underwhelming. 1962 Chicago Cubs - Ernie Banks is hitting .228 and even Billy Williams just .271 as Chicago is last in runs. It looks as if the Cubbies will spend the remainder of the season as spoilers in a tight division. National League West 1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - An actual losing month for the Bucs but not much changed in the standings. Honus Wagner is still hitting .413 and Owen Wilson now has 75 RBI. Babe Adams sits at 14-5 and it was only expected for this club to pull off the gas just a bit. 1978 Baltimore Orioles - The leaders have a losing month but the Orioles made no ground up. Eddie Murray still isnt at the Mendoza line while the team has only 25 stolen bases. Tim Sotddard has been poor in the pen with a 8.10 ERA in June. 1999 St. Louis Cardinals - JD Drew was red hot to close out the month and Mark McGwire has bashed out 19 home runs but the Cards are 16 games out. A .237 team average and the worst baserunning in the league is really UnCardinal like. 1940 St. Louis Browns - They have made the least amount of errors in the league and they did manage to win 10 games as the Browns will play for pride the rest of the way. |

July Attachment 1027062 Awards Batter of the month AL: Earl Williams (1971 Braves) Batter of the month NL - Bobby Bonds (1973 Giants) Pitcher of the month AL - Martin Perez (2014 Rangers) Pitcher of the month NL - David Cone (1988 Mets) Injuries Rudy May - (1982 Yankees) - Elbow (Season ending) Omar Olivares (1991 Cardinals) - Elbow (Season ending) American League East 1991 St. Louis Cardinals - Omar Olivares was lost for the season and all of a sudden the division got a lot tighter with Boston making a run. Felix Jose is having a hack of a season hitting .335 but the Cardinals arms really have to dig deep. 2003 Boston Red Sox - A 20 win month has put the Red Sox into high gear, finally putting their talent together. Bronson Arroyo had a big month while Alan Embree leads a strong pen that includes a Bob Howry and Mike Timlin. 1971 Atlanta Braves - Steady at about .500 the Braves cant be considered dead yet. Three players with over 20 home runs and Earl Williams wins player of the month honors as he went .435 with 4 home runs in July. 2018 Chicago White Sox - Michael Kopech leads the club in innings pitched and Lucas Giolito leads in wins as the pitching has been decent for Chicago. The bats remain cold and for that reason Chicago will play spoiler in a tough division. American League West 1985 Baltimore Orioles - Don Aase has been lights out as maybe the best closer in the league with 34 saves already and the Orioles try and begin the second half strong. Cal Ripken leads the team with 61 RBI with Fred Lynn right behind him with 60. 1999 Cleveland Indians - The tribe fell out of first this month but are still well in the fight. Omar Vizquel and Roberto Alomar are a showcase defensively but the bats have cooled a bit as David Justice and Travis Fryman need to get back on track. Kenny Lofton has 29 steals. 2014 Texas Rangers - Quite the story, the Rangers are hanging tight and could be a factor. Martin Perez has complimented Yu Darvish as the two have combined for 25 wins. The power lacks with only 76 home runs as a club this season. 1982 New York Yankees - Rudy May was lost for the season and also the Yankees season is starting to look lost. Oscar Gamble has been the only steady force in the offense with 23 home runs and 66 RBI. The team average remains last in the AL at .246. National League East 1988 New York Mets - The Mets grew angry this month and bolted back into first thanks to a three game sweeps of the Robins at Shea. David Cone has taken over as the ace with a 2.99 ERA and 81 K in 77 IP for the month. 1914 Brooklyn Robins - Their first losing month and a real test for Will Robinson and his club as they fall from the perch. Jeff Pfeffer didnt look good in his role as closer and starters are starting to be pushed. Red smith is up to 83 RBI as the offense remains the clubs calling card. 1973 San Francisco Giants - Bobby Bonds was player of the month showcasing skills all over the field. The team is last in the game in home runs and slugging and they are just 19-36 away from Candlestick. 1962 Chicago Cubs - Another nine win month for Chicago who will be on pace to lose 100 games. Chicago is last in batting WAR and team OPS while the team ERA is 4.84. Chicago isn't doing much of anything well right now and teams want them on their schedule. National League West 1912 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Pirates look like they will win this division from start to finish. Honus Wagner is still flirting with .400 at .391 and keep in mind he is 38 years old. Hank Robinson is 15-2 with a 2.42 ERA in an award worthy campaign. 1978 Baltimore Orioles - In the worst division possible, the Orioles have been brave and remain with a winning record. Mike Flanagan Starting pitching has been good but the pen has not as Tippy Martinez has had an up and down year. Ken Singleton leads the team with 17 HR and 66 RBI. 1999 St. Louis Cardinals - The Cards keep heading in the wrong direction winning just 9 games in July. They are 21-41 away from home and with their talent really have no excuse. Big Mac McGwire has 26 home runs well behind the pace one would expect from him at this points. 1940 St. Louis Browns - Fighting to avoid the wort record in the league with the 1962 Cubs, the Browns are looking a bit better. Pitching has always been the issue with the likes of Emil Bildilli in the rotation with a 8.75 ERA and a 3-16 record. Depth has obviously been the issue. |

The 1991 Cardinals lost 19 games thi month and have seen their bullpen implode. Only 3.5 games back remain the 1971 Braves who are being lead by Henry Aaron who leads the league with 35 home runs and a .568 SLG. The division will surely go down to the final week of the seasons when all three teams play each other and the Cardinals close out with 4 games in Boston. American League West The two teams have been battling it out for what has seemed to be the entire season. back and forth the 1999 Indians and the 1985 Orioles have gone. The enter the final month with exact records and all to play for in September. Bartolo Colon has been spot on supporting a strong Cleveland offence with 16 wins already while Manny Ramirez is up to 90 RBI. Mike Boddicker has 17 wins and a no no to his name while Steady Eddie Murray is up to .313 at the plate. Still with a real chance are the 2014 Rangers who sit 4.5 games out for first and could still be the biggest factor of them all. National League East The 1914 Robins have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are for real. The Robins bounced back in August winning 20 games including an emotional three game sweep of the 1998 Mets at Ebbets Field. Everyone on the other hand seems to be rooting against the Mets who endured a six game losing streak and are now on the outside looking in. The finish will be dramatic indeed with the two teams meeting for four games at Shea to end the season. What a story the 1914 Dodgers have been. Do the Mets have the resolve to come back? National League West Heading into September with a magic number of 4 and 91 wins already, the 1912 Pirates have been preparing for the postseason for a while now. Still winning over 100 games will mean alot to them as they have become the clear favorites in season 3. Honus Wagner has a 10.7 WAR with a month to play while Babe Adams was the best pitcher of all in August and has a 23-6 record with at least 5 more starts to be made. It has been quite the season at the new Forbes Field, staying healthy and fresh for the playoffs will be the biggest stress point for Frank Clarke in the final month. Attachment 1027681 |

The 87 wins may not be all the impressive but their ability to get on base and score runs is. Manny Ramirez drove in 106 runs while Kenny Lofton stole 41 bases and scored 103 times. Bartolo Colon won 18 games and a pen by committee worked as the Indians now look for greater glory. The 2003 Red Sox were lead by pitching triple crown winner Pedro Martinez for the season but Pedro will miss the playoffs with a bad back, putting the pressure on Boston to cover for him. Boston went 18-8 in September and are playing determined baseball as super star Nomar Garciaparra, who hit .324, joins Manny Ramirez in the middle of a good lineup. The Sox let up the fewest runs in the league, but Tim Wakefield and Bronson Arroyo will have their work cut out for them in the series against the Indians. Dwight Gooden and David Cone are as good a duo as one can find while Darryl Strawberry hit 31 home runs and drove in 96 for an offence that finished first in home runs. The Pirates won 111 games and haven't played an important game since June. They won their division by 34 games and had a plus run differential of 283. Honus Wagner hit .361 while Babe Adams won 26 games. Pittsburgh went 11-5 against the Mets in the regular season and will be the all out favorites to win the pennant. Playoffs American League Championship Series Red Sox Dominate Tribe A Four Game Sweep For Boston Behind Big Offense https://media.gettyimages.com/id/121...7OGAWSFPbRcTM= Many would have thought that it would be the 1999 Indians offense that made its mark in the ALCS. It was quite the opposite however as the 2003 Boston Red Sox lead by MVP Nomar Garciaparra made it look easy in a four game winning sweep. Nomar hit .500 and took home MVP honors driving in 5 runs while Trot Nixon drove in seven in the four games. Boston scored 34 runs including 11 in the opening game and the Red Sox made sure that they would not feel the loss of ace Pedro Martinez. Bartolo Colon was hammered in the opening game and incredibly the likes of Jim Thome and Manny Ramirez hit zero home runs in the four games. It really just didn't seem like the Indians were in this series at any point in time. The excitement is palpable now as the Sox look for ultimate glory in the World Series. National League Championship Series Pirates Fight Back To Break Mets Hearts Pittsburgh Takes Final Three Games To Win Pennant https://sportshistorynetwork.com/wp-...gh_Pirates.jpg In a highly anticipated series of two generational clubs from different eras, the best of seven series did not disappoint. The Mets were the favorites before the season started but by the end of the campaign, it was the Pirates who dominated the league with 111 regular season wins. The Mets were tired of being overlooked and won the first two games of the series in Pittsburgh stunning the favorites. Doc Gooden beat Babe Adams in game one and Randy Myers closed the door on a tight game two. The Mets felt great heading back east. Wilbur Cooper got the Pirates back on track in game three but the Mets bounced back with a game four win with Darryl Strawberry hitting a crucial home run, his second of the series. Now one win away, New York looked to close it out at home but a convincing 9-4 win for the visitors sent the series back to Pittsburgh. Cooper did it again in game six allowing four hits and only one run to beat David Cone in a classic 2-1 games. Game number seven was the only manner to decide this series but there was a feeling in the air that the Pirates would indeed find a way. Down 2-0 in the sixth against Gooden, the Bucs scored four times as pinch hitter Mike 'Turkey' Donlin hit a three run home run to put the home team up for good. Howie Camitz secured his fourth save of the series and just like that the Mets were out. The storybook season for Pittsburgh continues, and one more obstacle of the 2003 Boston Red Sox remains. |

The MVP of the series was George Gibson who was flawless behind the plate and hit a robust .444. A recap of the series: Game 1 In Pittsburgh A four run 4th inning was more then enough as the Pirates opened the series behind a dominant pitching effort by Hank Robinson. Robinson went 8 innings allowing just three hits and one run as he kept the Red Sox off balance all afternoon working well with George Gibson. The tone was set with this game one win. Game 2 In Pittsburgh Another four run inning, this time in the 6th, brings the Pirates back from a deficit. Tommy Leach adds a run scoring triple as Tim Wakefield couldnt hold the lead. Wilbur Cooper was good enough but it took Howie Camitz to close the door on the Red Sox in the ninth, it si Camitz's sixth save of the post season. Game 3 In Boston Nomar Garicaparra and Manny Ramirez both go yard as Boston makes it a great homecoming to get themselves back in the series. Derek Lowe out performs Babe Adams as the Pirates leave 10 men on base and couldn't find the big hit. Nomar went 3-4 and Jason Varitek scored two runs in the win. Game 4 In Boston The most crucial game of the series. Boston held a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning behind Bronson Arroyo and could smell a tie in the series. However a George Gibson double broke the tie and a Jim Viox single gave the Pirates the lead showing the Bucs resolve. Camitz closed out yet another one late as Boston had their hearts broken in a game they really needed. Game 5 In Boston Bobby Byrne hit a two run home run off of Tim Wakefield and the Pirates opened up a 4-0 lead early giving starter Wilbur Cooper all the support he would need. Cooper cruised through seven innings allowing no runs and striking out six. A late Boston rally would make it interesting but in the end the Pirates closed things out and were deserved champions in a season they truly can be proud of. April Attachment 1029910 Awards Batter of the month AL: Paul Goldschmidt (2013 Diamondbacks) Batter of the month NL - Dots Miller (2014 Cardinals) Pitcher of the month AL - Bryn Smith (1985 Expos) Pitcher of the month NL - Virgil Barnes (1924 Giants) Injuries Fran Healy (1975 Royals) - Hip (5 weeks) Brian Lawrence (2002 Padres - Ankle (3 months) Adam Eaton (2013 Diamondbacks) - abdominal (3 weeks) American League East 1999 Chicago White Sox - Frank Thomas and the Chicago offense came out hot as the Big Hurt is hitting .400 with good support from Magglio ordonez and Ray Durham. Keith Foulke has 6 saves already as Chicago doesnt seem to be sheepish on their chances in the East. 1975 Kansas City Royals - The Royals lost their starting catcher til likely the All Star Break and the offense has been slow to rise. The Royals are last in OBP but they are first in steals with 33. Early signs in the Royals pen are not good with no one taking the initative. 1985 Texas Rangers - Good hitting and terrible pitching is already the hallmark of this club. A 5.22 team ERA in April lead to the 16 losses as the team will likely lean on 37 year old Charlie Hough. Oddibe McDowell and Buddy Bell have combined for 7 HR and 27 RBI. 1969 Pittsburgh Pirates - The slowest starters of the contenders is surely the Bucs. Jim Bunning and Doc Ellis have been blasted in the rotation and the loss of Steve Blass to injury keeps the pressure on. After sweeping the 2002 Padres on the road to open the season, the club went 6-17 the rest of the opening month. American League West 2013 Arizona Diamondbacks - Paul Goldschmidt is on fire and won player of the month honors hitting .375 with 25 RBI. The DBacks are determined to be a factor in this division and the start shows it. Ian Kennedy is 4-1 and Brando McCarthy 4-0 while they are supported by Eric Chavez and a stellar defense. 1985 Montreal Expos - Last in home runs and last in average may have had you think the Expos started terribly, but a 14-13 record has them relevant. Bryn Smith was a big bright spot winning pitcher of the month with 4 wins and a 2.37 ERA. As expected, the Spos have looked much better at home early on. 1919 Chicago White Sox - They were having a good month until they lost their last four as all eyes remain on the 1919 Sox. Joe Jackson revives the legend hitting .371 with 8 home runs making it all look easy. They Sox pen is a problem as expected but the starters, Eddie Cicotte and Red Faber keep the scores down and the games close. The Sox should have a much better record. 2002 San Diego Padres - Jake Peavy is looking fresh and throwing hard and Trevor Hoffman has 8 saves as the Padres don't expect to be anyones pushovers. Still, hitting for average will be an issue and waiting on home runs seemingly the only hope on offense. The injury to starter Brian Lawrence until the All Star Break is not a good development. National League East 2018 New York Mets - Wow! The Mets came out of the gate flying and at one point won 10 in a row including a 21 run outburst against the Astros. Still the Mets did lose four in a row to end the month but still have alot to build on. Jacob DeGrom already has 5 wins and looks great while Jeff McNeil batting fourth has 27 RBI. Can the Mets keep it going? 1954 Detroit Tigers - Solid pitching and nothing spatacular have the Tigers off to a decent start. Bob Nieman is hitting .346 with 5 HR but Al Kaline is off to a slower start with only 8 RBI ; remember he is only 19. The Tigers are 0-5 against leftys which is a concern. Dick Donovan looks like the real deal as the closer of this club early on. 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates - No 4th starter was an issue for the Pirates in April as the club struggled after their big three lead by Gerrit Cole were resting. Andrew McCutchen has been super early on as has Starlin Marter both in the field and at the dish. On the down side Francisco Cervelli went 3 for 38 to end the month and Gregory Polanco went 2 for 27. Some real holes for a team that won 98 games for Clint Hurdle to deal with. 2008 Houston Astros - Jose Valverde was lit up late in games as the Astros found their bullpen and then some to be an issue in only an 8 win month. The team ERA is 5.51 as the club went 0-7 to start the year and lost 6 of 8 to finish it. The Astros are also last in home runs and dont pick it on defense very well. This could be a long hot summer in Houston. National League West 1924 New York Giants - A sweep of the Tigers to start the season and the Giants were on their way to an 18 win month. John McGarw has told his team he has only the pennant on his mind. George Kelly hit .372 and Travis Jackson drove in 21 while Hack Wilson hit 8 long ones. The Giants are first in almost all offensive catagories, it is early but still.. 1914 St. Louis Cardinals - Dots Miller was batter of the month hitting an eye opening .425 as the Cardinals has a good start. Bill Doak is 4-0 and Slim Sallee also looks good giving St. Louis a very good 1-2 punch. The Cards did lose the last two games of the month badly at the Polo Grounds, they will have to show more against New York if they expect to really compete. 1944 Chicago Cubs - The Cubbies took 16 games in April as the likes of Andy Pafko had a read hot start. Hank Wyse was hit hard with an ERA over 6 but the rest of the Cubs rotation was steady with Paul Derringer and Claude Passeau tough cookies to break. Chicago is poised to be one of those teams that is better then most people expect. 2021 Arizona Diamondbacks - Last in OPS and average it was no suprise that this team won only 10 games. The Arizona pen is good lead by Joakim Soria but along with the weak bats the snakes rotation has not pitched well as Luke Weaver and Merrill Kelly have been murdered for the most part. Trayce Thompson hit .175 for the month at the top of the lineup and Daulton Varsho with Carson Kelly also finished April under the Mendoza line. |

Mike Sirotka is 8-2 and the Chicago rotation has held its own while the offense sizzles. Along with Thomas, Paul Konerko and Ray Durham both hit over .400 for the month. 1969 Pittsburgh Pirates - After a slow start, the Bucs mean business winning 19 games in May and making a move for the top. Willie Stargell is hitting .333 and Roberto Clemente is a clutch man at the plate with 36 RBI. Bob Veale and Bob Moose both caught fire at the end of the month as the Pirates lead the league in FIP at 3.51. 1985 Texas Rangers - The Rangers pen has been a headache but Bob Sebra stepped up as a stand in ace keeping an 1.87 ERA in his last 6 starts. Gary Ward has 10 home runs and is hitting .330 while Buddy Bell is making a case for an allstar season. Still it is a bit of a Texas stretch to think this team can compete. 1975 Kansas City Royals - The Royals are suppose to be much better then this but they honestly haven't hit the way they should; even George Brett is under .300 as of June 1st. John Mayberry is making the case for the home run crown with 20 already but the club remains last in runs and is hitting .229 collectively. American League West 2013 Arizona Diamondbacks -Quite the ride in the desert for the snakes as they win 19 games in May and seem to be much more confident then the favored Black Sox. Aaron Hill and Paul Goldschmidt have both driven in over 40 runs each while David Hernandez and JJ Putz have made a formidable combination out of the pen. Arizona is first in OPS and runs scored. 1919 Chicago White Sox - People are still scratching their heads about this team. All the talent in the world but a -5 game difference from actual to pythagorean records. Joe Jackson is hitting .403 in a monumental season while Eddie Cicotte has a 2.12 ERA. Still, the Sox find ways to lose games, which opens up many more questions then answers. 1985 Montreal Expos - Last in home runs but first in steals, the Expos try and stay relevant to no avail. The offense is steady with Tim Raines and Andre Dawson producing in the middle of the order but the starting pitching has fell off for Buck Rodgers and there remain few answers. The Expos are 9-20 away from home and are the oldest team by age in this league. 2002 San Diego Padres - Ryan Klesko hit .400 in May and Phil Nevin has 35 RBI but the Padres are still scaring no opposing pitcher with their lineup. Jake Peavy is looking strong with a 2.39 ERA but that's where the good news ends for Padres pitching. The Padres have surprised by losing 14 one run games already with the strong pen the team has on paper. National League East 2018 New York Mets - The Mets still hold a healthy lead in the east as Yoenis Cespedes has 12 home runs and is hitting .337 as the Mets are hitting .284 as a team. JaCob DeGrom has 9 wins and Zach Wheeler is coming into his own as New York starting pitching is their strength. Amed Rosario is batting .343 at the top of the order. 1954 Detroit Tigers - Finding themselves in second place, the Tigers feel like there is a summer run in them to make this a true race in the East. Bob Nieman leads most offensive categories and Al Kaline has fit in well in the leadoff spot. The Tigers have only 2 wins against lefties, making them vulnerable, especially to the first place Mets. 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates - A team that lost its confidence and its way completely losing 14 games in a row and digging a hole deep into the season. Bad defense was a big culprit and little support on offense other then Andrew McCutchen who did his all to turn things around winning hitter of the month honors. The season is still early but the pen is disheartened and the Bucs will need a complete change in approach if they are to turn this around. 2008 Houston Astros - Miguel Tejada and Lance Berkman and that is all for this Astros team that is in between winning generations and isnt competing on the pitchers mound. Already 16 games out, it could be a very long season deep in the heart of Texas. National League West 1924 New York Giants - Steady as can be the Giants are sailing finally reaching in first place. It does appear that they will have a fight on their hands all season from the 1944 Cubs. Frankie Frisch is a managers dream hitting .322 and Hack Wilson has 15 home runs and 36 driven in. The team is first in home runs with 96. This club can also pick it leading in defensive efficiency and double plays. 1944 Chicago Cubs - The Cubbies mean business winning 19 games in May. Bill Nicholson and Andy Pafko are driving everyone in while Stan Hack and Phil Cavarretta get it done at the top of the order as Chicago leads in OBP. Claude Passeau and his offspeed stuff is playing well while Hy Vanenberg has settled in as closer with 10 saves. The Cubs believe they can win this. 1914 St. Louis Cardinals - Quietly playing well, the Cards are only 4.5 games back, right where they want to be after two months. Bill Doak is an ace no one has heard of but has won 8 of 10 starts. Dots Miller is chasing Joe Jackson with a .381 average and 44 driven in. The Cards have stolen an even 100 bases and are a fun group to watch. 2021 Arizona Diamonbacks - Slight improvement from the Dbacks but they are still lagging in the NL West. Their starting pitching seems like it has lost its way as the team ERA is at 4.78. Much more is needed from Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly. Katel Marte is having an allstar season but the power isnt really present and thats bad news in this division. Madison Bumgarner has a 7.62 ERA and lost his job in the Arizona rotation. |

June Attachment 1032069 Awards Batter of the month AL: Paul Goldschmidt (2013 Diamondbacks) Batter of the month NL - Hack Wilson (1924 Giants) Pitcher of the month AL - Bob Sebra (1985 Rangers) Pitcher of the month NL - Virgil Barnes (1924 Giants) Injuries Jimmy O'Connell (1924 Giants) - Fractured Finger (2 weeks) American League East 1969 Pittsburgh Pirates - The favored Pirates finally take over first from the White Sox but know that this race will likely last all season. Jim Bunning has turned it on for the Bucs with a 2.18 ERA over his last 12 starts while Matty Alou has paced the offense hitting .342 from the top of the order. The Pirates defense as expected has been excellent. 1999 Chicago White Sox - A losing month coming back to earth, Jerry Manuel needs to get his team focused again. Chris Singleton has helped pace a good offense supporting Frank Thomas and Mags Ordonez hitting .307 from the three slot. The Sox defense however leads the league in errors while the starting rotation has been hit hard as Mike Sirotka and James Baldwin are showing they may not be up to leading this group. 1985 Texas Rangers - Fortunate to be only four games out, the Rangers will not go away. They beat the Pirates twice and swept the 1924 Giants showing everyone they can compete. Bob Sebra stepped up and won pitcher of the month honors while Toby Harrah has hit .448 over his last 10 games. Texas has a real opportunity to push a division that is wide open. 1975 Kansas City Royals - Still a dark horse, these Royals have the talent to still make a run. A better month for the offense but statistically they are still way behind other clubs. They do have 93 steals and Dennis Leonard has pitched well with a 1.84 ERA his last two starts. The pen has also showed life as Bob McLure seems to have the closer role as KC is only 16-17 in one run games. American League West 2013 Arizona Diamondbacks - There is no fluke in this team as they continue to roll with the best record in the league. Paul Goldschmidt won player of the month acclaim again in his terrific season already with 76 RBI. Ian Kennedy is 13-3 as a starter and Patrick Corbin is at his best with a 0.77 ERA over his last three starts. The DBacks lead the league with 88 home runs and seem to be having fun along the way. It seems to be a rare dominant team for the franchise. 1919 Chicago White Sox - Three crucial games to open July in the desert against Arizona. The Sox need to prevent falling behind farther and hurting their confidence even more. As expected, the team from this era has no pen but the starting pitching has been could but has been wasted. Joe Jackson cooled off a bit but Eddie Collins has really gotten hot hitting .522 in the last week of the month. Can the Sox make a consistent run, the month of July should tell us alot more. 2002 San Diego Padres - The Padres have fallen off likely too far as we hit midsummer, and finishing the season could be a formality. Jake Peavy has looked awesome with his 2.68 ERA and 93 strikeouts. The hitting has not showed up with a .319 team OBP and a .247 team average overwhelming no one. Trevor Hoffman remains untouchable with 23 saves but the pen behind him has not followed suit. 1985 Montreal Expos - Andre Dawson had a strong June hitting .417 while Tim Raines is hitting .311. Beyond the Expos stars however there has been little to be excited about. The pitching has allowed the most runs in the league and it has been the starters that cant seem to keep games close. The Expos are only 12-29 away from home and have the worst defensive efficiency in the league. Still be sure that Montreal will support and love their team. National League East 2018 New York Mets - The Mets have cooled off a bit since April but with this division playing so poorly, they have the most comfortable lead of all teams. Ahmed Rosario has set the table all season while Cespedes remains hot with 21 home runs and 63 RBI. Jeff McNeil has also driven in 63 but in the end it has been the bog guns in the rotation that identify this club. jacob DeGrom has struck out 125 batters while Noah Syndegaard and Zack Wheeler have helped the Mets hold the best FIP and pitching WAR in the league. Its a fun season for Mets fans with no slowdown in sight. 1954 Detroit Tigers - Only 10 wins for this club in June as the team looks slow and old on the bases and in the field. Dick Donovan has been hammered as a potential closer with a 7.63 ERA in the month while the rotation has been erratic other then Billy Hoeft who has 125 K's and has looked very good. This Tiger team just does not have the depth of the ability really to have a winning record and to chase down the Mets. 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates - Trying to figure out what is wrong with this team is quite a task. A 98 win team can barely get 10 wins in a month. Gerrit Cole has been beat up with a 5.53 ERA and the rest of the team has followed suit only with Charlie Morton looking good of late. The Pirates run the bases worse then anyone else while they love to strand hitters on base. This team has the talent, but it is about as big a hole as you can dig for yourself heading into the Allstar break. 2008 Houston Astros - Continuing their trend as the worse offense in the entire league, the Astros do deserve credit for staying in game and fighting to avoid a last place finish. Michael Bourn has only 10 RBI on the season while Geoff Blum is hitting just .206. Jose Valverde has kept his closer job by default, but he has blown the few chances he has seen. The worse FIP in the league at 4.66 and a pitching WAR at only 5.0 National League West 1924 New York Giants - New York is playing very good baseball but they just cant seem to shake the Cubs in what is becoming a fin battle. Every Giants starter has won over 10 games and the team ERA is best in the league. The hitting has also stood tall for John McGraw with Hack Wilson staying focused and contributing a solid season in the middle of the order. The .283 team average as well as the 138 home runs makes many wonder how this team can only be a half game up. Closing close games could be a real challenge for this team. The Giants are 28-13 at the Polo Grounds. 1944 Chicago Cubs - Chicago means business and the fans at Wrigley believe this team can do it. Andy Pafko and Bill Nicholson both have over 60 RBI while Eddie Stanky and Stan Hack provide excellent defense for the club. Chicago leads the entire league in strikeouts but the starting rotation has shown some tear during the year. Almost everyone would expect this Cubs team to start to fade, but the team seems to find a way to win and produce when the game is on the line. 1914 St. Louis Cardinals - The Cards have begun to tread water and it has been tough for them to keep pace with the top two. The injury to Dots Miller really hurt the lineup as he was having an allstar season but his return in imminent. The Cards have the most steals in the league and their staff has also done a surprising job second in the league in strikeouts. They were swept by the lowly Tigers to end the month and actually lost 5 of seven to them. They also took a 12-0 drubbing from the Giants at the Polo Grounds. They do still hold a winning record and everything to still play for in July. 2021 Arizona Diamondbacks - Nothing really going good for this Arizona team although Katel Marte is playing well as he went 15 for his last 30. The pitching all around has been a mess and the pen especially has the worst ERA as a group in the league. The club has played better away from home then in the desert and they will need that trend as they play only seven home games in all of July. |

The 1999 White Sox had a terrible June Swoon as the help around star Frank Thomas hasnt come from anywhere. Bob Veale has won 18 games for the Bucs with 198 K while Roberto Clemente looks as good as ever with 93 RBI. The 1975 Royals saw George Brett finally get hot and is now batting .310 but Royals bats overall could not keep them in the race. The Pirates now have their sights clear on the pennant. American League West The best and only race still remaining it would seem in season 4. The 1919 White Sox turned the corner and started playing great ball again overtaking the 2013 DBacks but then falling off late in August to now sit 2.5 games back. Happy Felsch has picked up the slack for a slumping Joe Jackson while Lefty Williams has 19 wins. First in home runs and first in relief pitching the Arizona teams seems determined to finish strong knowing very well the legend of their opponents. Can the Sox stand up to the late season pressure and avoid missing their chance at redemption as a club. The tension should be high in September with the teams meeting three more times at Comiskey in the final week. The 2002 Padres still sit a relatively distant 8.5 games back in third. National League East It has been the 2018 Mets all season long and there is no reason to dou t that they will finish the job with a 9.5 game lead over Pittsburgh. Mets pitching has been good with Jacob DeGrom having 19 wins in a healthy 249 innings pitched. Seth Lugo has 36 saves and the Mets are 44-26 at home. The 2015 Pirates are playing a bit better but it is coming much too late. The team found its stroke in August but Gerrit Cole sits at a shocking 10-19 with a 4.82 ERA. The Mets have lead this division since April 17th and now also have their eyes focused on the pennant. National League West The 1924 Giants sure know how to turn it on and finish strong. John McGraw lead his team from what was a division race to a sort of runaway from the 1944 Cubs as New York won 19 games in August. The Cubs who were the darlings of the season and leading the race at the all-star break couldn't back up player of the month Andy Pafko and fell victim to some rough patch pitching. Chicago still has the second best record in baseball but it doesn't look like it will be enough. Hack Wilson continues to tear through the league with 38 HR and 105 RBI while Art Nehf has won 18 games and Kent Greenfield was won 17 throwing in 252 innings. The 1924 Giants are likely to be the only team to win 100 this season. |

Arizona played much better then anticipated as star Paul Goldschmidt hit 39 home runs and he and Aaron Hill both drove in over 100 RBI. The team was also best of the bases and were tops in defensive efficiency. David Hernandez and JJ Putz made what was likely the best pen in the league. Arizona proved that they really dont have a glaring weakness. On the other side are the 1969 Pirates who were lost for most of the early season but after the all star break really turned it on and ran away with things in their division; in fact they were the very fist club to clinch. Bob veale went 22-8 in an outstanding season while Bob Moose won 18 games and was almost just as good. Dock Ellis actually moved to the pen and looked competent while the Pirates offense was middle of the road but seemed to get the big hits when they need them. The above all star for the club is Roberto Clemente who had 115 RBI and a knack to do it all on the field. Two unheralded franchises get a chance to play it out for a chance to advance and win the pennant. National League Championship Series https://cdn.ssref.net/req/202411081/...r/NYM-2018.pnghttps://cdn.ssref.net/req/202411081/...r/NYG-1924.png 1924 New York Giants (99-63) vs 2018 New York Mets (81-81) It will be the battle of modern New York with the glory of its past in the NLCS. The 2018 Mets lead from wire to wire in the East as their three headed monster at the top of their rotation was lights out. Jacob DeGrom won 21 games while Zack Wheeler made a great number two with Syndegaard and Matz adding more depth. Seth Lugo saved 41 games and the Mets as a unit lead the league in FIP. Yoenis Cespedes was worth all the hype with 36 HR and 112 RBI. Jeff McNeil hit .321 and Brandon Nimmo blasted 21 home runs. This Mets team did only win 81 games and isn't seeming to get the respect they deserve, but here they are trying to make a miracle of a post season pennant run. The 1924 Giants learned the hard way not to take anything for granted as the 1944 Cubs were on their heels all season long. Still the Giants found a way as John McGraw often does and the famous club ended with the best record in the league with 99 wins. Virgil Barnes won 23 games and the staff held its own but it was Giants hitting that shined this season. The club hit 256 home runs and big Hack Wilson had 44 of them while the club .277 average was also tops. New York did lead the league in errors but many say that is just a result of their aggressive style in the field. The series should be a fine one in the biggest stage of them all. Many feel however that the Giants can only beat themselves and should lift the flag. The Playoffs American League Championship Series Clemente Shines As Bucks Fly Pirates Look Miles Ahead Of Nervous DBacks https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-con...o-clemente.jpg Playing in the regular season is one thing, but when the bright lights of the postseason come on, certain teams and stars seem to steal the limelight. Roberto Clemente is such a player who is at his best on the big stage and in this ALCS, he was brilliant. Clemente went 10 for 18 and played great defense even as the series stood in the balance after the two teams split the in Arizona. The 1969 Pirates took all three games at Three Rivers Stadium including game 5 where Bob Veale threw a three hit shutout and Pittsburgh fans celebrated their pennant. MVP Candidate Paul Goldschmidt did not have a single RBI in the series while Aaron Hill went 1 for 21 as the 2013 Arizona stars fell right out of the sky. Confident and playing some of their best baseball at exactly the right time, the Pirates now look for their grandest moment in the World Series where the best team in the league, the 1924 New York Giants await them. National League Championship Series A Giant Comeback Truly Excellent Giants Refuse To Lose As Shock Haunts Mets https://www.sportsofyore.com/wp-cont...series_mob.png The 1924 New York Giants, who had the best record in the league for season 4, played their best baseball with their backs against the wall in the NLCS to eliminate the 2018 Mets and make it to the World Series. Game Seven was one for the ages, but before we get there, the 2018 Mets looked to have everything in their favor jumping to a convincing 3 games to 1 series lead. Jacob DeGrom pitched a shutout in game one and at CitiField the Mets carried the momentum to get to just one game from the clinch. Virgil Barnes had other ideas and was excellent in game five allowing no runs in 8 plus innings to beat Noah Syndergaard and send the series back to the Polo Grounds. With new life the Giants made an example of the Mets and had the kind of win in game six that losing teams cant recover from. The Giants won 18-4 as George Kelly had 8 RBI and the club ended with a historic 26 hits. The Mets surely felt that the Giants and John McGraw had run up the score and tensions were high anyway for game seven. Jacob DeGrom was the perfect man for the moment. DeGrom held the Giants hitless for five innings but his opponent, Art Nehf, also refused to budge and the game was scoreless in the 8th. Amed Rosario came to the dish and hit a home run almost out of the stadium. Rosario hit it 479 feet and the Mets closed out the 8th and needed three outs to win it. Seth Lugo, the Mets closer who had 41 saves allowed a single to Ross Youngs and with one out faced hank Gowdy. Down two strikes, Gowdy hit a towering fly to left that swayed just fair and changed the entire narrative as the Giants walked it off and Giant fans stormed the field. The Mythology of this one and New York baseball will not be lived down forever. Now the Giants move on to face a rested 1969 Pirates team for the right to win it all. |

Pittsburgh does fight back to make it a game but Rosy Ryan closes out the ninth. George Kelly drives in four and Ross Youngs scores 4 runs off 4 hits. Game 2 - A much closer game as Jack Bentley held a slight lead over Bob Veale and the home team after a Frankie Frisch RBI single in the 5th. The Giants extended their lead in the ninth before Bentley closed it out despite a late home run by Carl Taylor. Hank Gowdy goes 4-4 and after this game it felt there was no way the Pirates could survive and bring the series back to Pittsburgh. Game 3 - The hammer came out for the Giants at the Polo Grounds as their offense swelled including an 8 run sixth inning that put the game away. Art Nehf sailed along for the complete game win while Hack Wilson hit a three run home run and Jim Bunning had nothing in a crucial start foe the Pirates. Wilson had 4 home runs and 12 RBI in the post season. Game 4 - Game 4 was a formality as the Giant fans celebrated a title for season four with an easy 7-1 clinching win. Virgil Barnes pitched well in the win while Frankie Frisch had four hits and a home run to earn MVP honors and Travis Jackson added a two run single. It was a culmination for the Giants who sweated out an ALCS win only to have it their way completely in the World Series.
