3173 - PBP possible weirdness - infield hit & no advance

Have seen this 3 times in playing out about 70 games. Runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Infield hit - runners do not advance. Granted it is not a force situation with first base open but wouldn't the runners always be running with 2 outs?

Not necessarily.

Depending on the situation and instructions from the manager, they might be off with the pitch, or they might go on contact, or they might wait and see. Since there is no force out at home, even with two outs it's not always a good idea to go charging to the plate. If the batter actually got an infield hit out of it, part of the reason might be because the runners did NOT go, and the only play the fielder had was to first.

I guess I could think of a situation like that where the ball takes a thud right in front of the plate and only dribbles a few feet left or right....the 3b runner would have to be on his toes though to realize that the batter can make it to 1st while he could never make it home and be safe. You'd have to have some people on their toes for a situation like this though a 3b coach and the base runner both. Three times in 70 games though seems a bit much. This should be one of those 1 in a million type of situations I think. I've watched a lot of baseball games in my lifetime and I've never seen this happen in real life situations.

I can buy that. Last night I TT'd a problem with there being too many infield hits to begin with (TT#3161).

This one is TT#3173.
