Updated storylines.xml file and extra info

1 Attachment(s)
It is important to note that this isn't 'my' file. There are various authors who wrote these stories. I simply fixed up a few issues and added a couple of new storylines. In fact, I hope it is OK with everyone that worked on these that I am putting this file here but there were just a few things that really needed fixed and it shouldn't need to wait for the next patch (which I believe Markus said would be a week or two).

This file can be used in any current league and in any new leagues. Markus and Andreas added a new storylines.xml for today's patch but it had some issues with it. This one should fix those issues and also adds a few new storylines. To use this in an existing league, simply go to your league's save folder and delete the storyline.dat file (make a backup if you would like and call it storyline.bak). Do this while the game is closed.

Put this file in your OOTP directory within a folder called storylines. Simply replace the existing default_storylines.xml file. Reload your existing league and the new storylines will automatically be included.

Of course, if you are starting a new league, these will be used automatically as well. You won't see any storylines if you don't have the BNN News filter selected (unless you are just looking at the league news). For interactive storylines to come up, you must be the owner of the team. For many storylines to work properly, the morale system must be turned on for players (this is on by default). Having coaches and scouting on will also lead to more storylines as they are used throughout to spice things up.

I've been playing OOTP forever, great series and special thanks to all the guys who make this game and provide countless hours of fun!.

This is my first time posting here on the boards, I hope to become a regular member. I just purchased OOTP13 and would like to put this file into my data, but, I haven't a clue on how to do so.

Could someone help me out with that please?

Right click and save as. Put it in this area.

C:\Users\Cody\Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 13\storylines

That only is good for Windows based OS's. instead of Cody, use whatever your login name is.

What are the issues with the version in the patch?

Mike Lowe 04-11-2012 11:38 AM

I still don't quite understand if/how these storylines work. If I am using the default MLB quickstart, how can I ensure that they are (will be) working?

Syd Thrift 04-11-2012 11:40 AM

Doesn't the game only import the storylines xml in a brand new league?

All storylines come from the same file so this would work with any quickstart or any league you could ever use.

If you delete the storyline.dat file from you save folder, it will grab the storyline.xml file and recreate the storyline.dat file.

A few not working conditions and some typos. No big things. 2 new storylines are also now included.

They are working by default. There have been several reports of users seeing them within the MLB Quickstart so don't worry, they will show up occasionally.

Cool, thanks.

Marking this thread for when I get home tonight.

Thanks for this!

Cody,

An update from what I have seen with your updated storyline file

Fan Loyalty Drops 7 points from Season Start to All Star Break in 2014

It seems that the RV storyline still needs a little work in terms of the positive impact it can have on the Fan Loyalty.

Quote:

<ARTICLE id="591" morale_modifier="50" team_fan_interest_modifier="50" team_fan_loyalty_modifier="50">
This storyline increased the Marlins Fan Loyalty from 2 to 7. Only the positive storyline fired because the owners patience is 5 which is above the max 3 that is required for the other part of the storyline to fire.

SunDevil 04-26-2012 03:43 PM

Cody,

Using your updated storyline file, I ran into the owner in a ponzi scheme storyline that dropped the team's market size from 8 down to 1.

San Francisco Giants Owner, Laurence Baer, Loses Money In Ponzi Scheme: A very frustrated Baer stood in front of a crowd of reporters today to let them in on the bad news. "My finances were wrapped up in the recent Ponzi scheme being reported on by the media," said Baer. "I am not yet sure of the full ramifications of what this means but one way or the other, it looks like the short term finances of my beloved San Francisco Giants will be reduced. By how much, I just don't know. Unfortunately at this point we will need to start trying to sell off some of our more expensive players and try to go a bit younger and less expensive. Rest assured, we will rebuild this team stronger than ever and bring it to the top of the National League Western Division."

So it was Storyline that dropped a team's market size from 8 to 1 and after 20 years it has never went back up to even a value of 2. It has a smaller market size now then KC and Tampa Bay.

Whether this happens in real life or not, please understand that my intention was just to make people aware that when you are trying to setup your finances for your league, might want to consider turning off storylines if you want those leagues to be more stable financially.

As for the people who wonder what exactly is the Market Size really made up (in real life), please refer to the links that I posted in a post on the top of the first page of this thread, to get an idea of how much goes into determining a Market Size.

I saw this too, and I had not used this updated file, so it is in the default OOTP file. And it is to put it lightly, frustrating.

C'mon now, let's not get too carried away, especially with this kind of terminology. One, let's make sure the tool is working the way it is supposed to work and we're not dealing with something broken that can, and needs to be, fixed. Secondly, realize we're- at its base -dealing with someone's contribution, an idea that's intention was to add something of immersive quality to the game, even if it didn't pan out like that, and it can be, will be, adjusted.

I understand where you are coming from, but the issues lie with the file that shipped with the game, not with what is being done here to fix it. That was what I was trying to point out (not very well it seems). Someone's contribution or not, I really don't care. It was in the release of the product, a payware product. The thought processs utilized when coming up with some of the repercussions to the storylines is seriously flawed, and I am calling it out. Having it adjusted? I am all for it. Go to it. But I fail to see how you will know what is to be adjusted if the issues are not made crystal clear. And even then, it is not always given attention. Storylines were a half feature last game, and that is being generous. In reality it was more like 1/5 of a feature. And now that some work has been put into it, it almost worse for wear. And I am not going after cody here. In a ideal situation, this thread would not even exist in the first place. I understand not having an extensive list of storylines, but to have a list where several of them do not work, or are out of place, it is annoying. It really is.

Yeah, I get that, too. :(

1998 Yankees 04-27-2012 08:13 AM

Bump before patch. Will it contain a new storylines.xml file and should we delete the storyline.dat in our saved game folder for an ongoing league?

1998 Yankees 04-27-2012 02:55 PM

Guys, this is important. I'll hit the WHere are the Storylines? thread, too.
