Double Hook DH Rule?

Seeing that the Atlantic League is going to be using what they are calling the "double hook" DH rule this season.

Is there any way for this to be added into the game? Many players and other people I have spoken with believe this rule could quickly find itself in MLB if everything goes well.

Would likely be a difficult thing to create post-release, but does anyone know if there are any plans to add it?

Where are you hearing that many players think this could make it to the majors? This has virtually no chance. Especially after going to a universal DH in 2020.

i like the rule. But its experimental, we would probably have to wait until it is made a permanent rule somewhere.

The double hook DH is the first step toward abandoning DH altogether, so I endorse it heartily!

Yea, if they think losing the DH if a reliever comes in encourages managers to stick with the SP longer, imagine what not having the DH at all will do!!!

i would hope it would bring back starters that pitch more than five innings...

Cryomaniac 04-18-2021 07:06 AM

What is the rule? That you only get a DH for as long as your SP is in the game?

This at least takes us closer to the way baseball was meant to be played - AND... at least this would kill the hideous 'Opener - Follower' concept!!

Actually someone proposed the opener-following concept in a book back in the 60s. The idea as to PH for the opener when his spot came up.

Thanks! It was Earnshaw Cook's Percentage Baseball. Though the idea was apparently used in game 7 of the 1924 World Series. Who knows when the very first use was.

DH or no DH starters get pulled soon after facing each batter twice.

I recognize his name so I know I read that book.

I distinctly remember the Reds using Ted Power in that role in the 1990 NLCS but apparently the World Series game you’re referring to was back in 1924:

You want starters to go deeper in games limit the number of pitchers on a roster.

Or stop treating them like they're made of spun glass. Let them be the freakin' athletes that they really are. Hitting, pitching, running, the whole bit.

I have no idea how many players think this could make it to the majors but they wouldn’t be doing this if it had virtually no chance.

I have no idea if this is something that could realistically be patched in but I’d love to see this as an option in OOTP.

I mean...they're also experimenting in the Atlantic League with moving the mound back to 61 feet, 6 inches. Are you trying to tell me THAT has a chance to succeed?

It's not happening. The mound has been at that distance for almost 130 years. This is not changing.

For a hundred years when you left the game you were done for the day. Yet despite that we got the DH.
