Why are the overall ratings of these cards so different?

When I use the CPU to automatically set my roster, it puts in Drabek over Shwellenbach. I know the CPU isn't very good at that analysis, but it genuinely seems like Spencer should be way better than Drabek.

1. Is the CPU just that bad at auto setting rosters?
2. If so, why is Drabek's overall so much higher?
3. It seems like Spencer is better in almost every aspect other than PBABIP. Is PBABIP derived from the other ratings or is it a hidden variable kind of thing?

The Drabek card is from way back on launch day. Schwellenbach came out around the time that PT Elite was released, which was six months(?) later. In the meantime, ratings creep happened. As the yearly cycle passes, the underlying ratings on cards creep up when compared to previously-released cards of the same alleged overall value, and it's the underlying ratings that really count. Schwellenbach is definitely the better card. The computer AI doesn't understand this and will just plug in the highest overall ratings.

Seems with a little more math crunching it could do this. I mean, all they have to do is average all the stats.

Averaging all the ratings would be better, but the ratings aren't all equal in importance. From my perspective, they're constantly fiddling with the importance of each as the year goes on. There's also an issue with extreme highs, where you don't get the full benefit. The difference between 210 Stuff and 170 isn't as valuable as the difference between 170 and 130. 210 will get you a marginal increase. 170 will get the job done. 130 will kill you right now in high-level leagues.

edit: to put it another way, it's not a linear scale where averaging is a true reflection of value

If you average the top 6 ratings (Stuff, Movement, HRA, PBABIP, Control and Stamina - you get 88.5 for Drabek and 105.5 for Schwellenbach. If THAT number were used for assembling lineups and pitching assignments, the computer AI would get a lot closer to being right.

also power creep means this has to exist or the power level of bronze cards would stay the same all year and that would be boring
