Gilroy had a distinguished eighteen year career that saw him win the Scottish Middleweight and Light-heavyweight titles as well as fight for the Scottish Heavyweight title. He beat Arthur Sadd twice on points and drew with Jack Hyams. Bert also lost fights with Freddie Mills, Bruce Woodcock, Marcel Cerdan and Don Cockell.
