HERB BISHOP LW
Hometown - Richmond, Victoria, Australia
71(25)-46-12; 1 NC
This busy Australian fought 130 bouts over a ten year career. He won the Australian Lightweight title in 1934 with a thirteenth round knockout over Jimmy Kelso. He defended once before losing the belt to Alf Blatch the following year. Bishop lost bouts to Billy McAllister, Phil Zwick, Jack Carroll and Kid Covelli. He and Seattle transplant Tod Morgan fought eight times over a six year period with Morgan winning six, Bishop one as well as one no decision bout. Besides the handful of title bouts and Mr. Morgan, Bishop's record is littered with a parade of stiffs.
EDIT: Bishop also beat Joe Ghnouly who is rated a four. That seems like a fluke outcome to me. Ghnouly was a world away from Bishop in talent; he beat Joyce, Morgan and a number of other quality fighters. Broke Al Foreman's nose and had a title shot at WW against Armstrong. I overlooked the Ghnouly fight when I rated Bishop but I think that may be ok as the bout appears to be an outlier. Now that I have looked at Ghnouly though, that four rating looks off a bit - does anybody else have an opinion on his rating?
