JAMES "Doc" PAYNE MW
Hometown - Cleveland, Ohio, USA
10(8)-11-5; 1 NC
Payne was a sparring partner for Kid McCoy. The two fought for real in 1898 with McCoy scoring a fourth round knockout. Payne's only big victory was an eight round decision over Paddy Purtell in 1898. Doc was knocked out in two rounds by both Joe Butler and Tommy West. His final two bouts came in 1905 against Canadian coal miner and heavyweight Jack Munroe. The two fought to a six round draw in the first match. One month later, Munroe took the rematch with a sixth round knockout. Payne also wrestled professionally and unfortunately died by his own hand after his career came to a close.
