Arnie Brower, a.k.a. "the Jewish bomber." Born 1940. Fought from 1961 to 1975. Record: 26-6-2 (17). Trained by Charley Goldman.
Brower was an anomaly in the sixties boxing world. A graduate of the University of Connecticut with a degree in zoology, he was "clean-cut" and "well-spoken," and "made no secret of the fact that once his sporting career was over he planned on embarking on more cerebral pursuits," according to Robert Mladnich of <i>The Sweet Science</i>.
Brower upset Dick Richardson in July 1962, but was upset in turn by Tom McNeeley at the Boston Garden in February 1965. Because he was a Jewish boxer in New York, though, he was a gate attraction even after the loss to McNeeley ended his hopes of becoming a contender.
Nearly two decades after retirement, Brower became homeless and a crack addict.
