Ball handed Karl Mildenberger his first career defeat in November 1959. Karl was 11-0 at the time and they fought in an Eliminator German LHW title fight. Ball KO'd Karl in the 7th round of that fight. After a win against a Lou Perry, Ball then faced defeat in Feb 1960 when he was TKO'd by Wim Snoek. Two month later though, Ball fought Erich Schoppner for the European (EBU) LHW Title and the German LHW Title, loosing a 15 round decision to Schoppner.
In November 1961, Helmut fought a 12 round draw with Dieter Wemhoner for the German LHW Title. Then in March 1962, Ball got his 3rd and and last shot at the German LHW Title, this time taking on Klaus Peter Gumpert. Helmut lost another tough decision, this one 12 rounds.
