Fighting mainly in Southern California, Canela won the California State Welterweight Title in 1983 with an eleventh round TKO over Hedgemon Robertson. He defended the title four times before suffering his only career stoppage to Russell Mitchell in 1987. Canela fought to a ten round decision loss against Nino LaRocca in 1984.
