In the autoplay dropdown menu, one of the choices is to play to the selected day. If you make that choice, it actually plays up to and including that day.

Playing to the selected day should bring you to that day's schedule and be ready for you to choose to manage or quick play.

Found this out the hard way. Really wanted to manage the game myself in the playoffs and it went ahead and simmed game one.
