There is a deep undercurrent of sadness and satire in this tale of Midge Kelly, a louse who punches his way to the welterweight title. This short story lead to one of the best boxing movies ever made. In the 1949 film Champion, Kirk Douglas portrayed Midge Kelly in what was his first great success as an actor.
