Smith started out 5-2-1 including a win over Vic Brown and the draw against Everett Copeland. The losses were a 10 round decision to an Al Gonzalez(8-5-1,9) and an 8 rounder to Don Prout. In October 1964 and Feb 1965 he lost by 4th round KO to Lee Carr and was DQ'd in the 2nd round against Giuseppe Migliari in Rome, Italy, Smith's first an d only career fight outside of the US. For the rest of his career, the most noteworthy fights were a 6 round decision win over Lee Williams(11-3-1,9), a 3rd round KO loss to Joe Frazier in April 1966, Frazier's 8th career fight, and finaly in Sept 1967, Smith was KO'd in the 3rd round by Alvin "Blue" Lewis.
