FA leaving leagues
I'm running a three league universe, MLB (Historical), American Baseball League (Fictional) and Japanese League.
I have checked the box "free agents from other leagues can be signed" because I have a Mexican league that basically is a feeder to the minor leagues of the other leagues (especially the MLB).
However, I have not checked the box "Free agents may leave this league". I don't want Real Historical players playing in my fictional leagues, and vice versa.
I have noticed that if a MLB team releases a player, then he will often sign with the ABL, which I can deal with, especially if that player is just going to die in the minors.
However, say a guy gets released by the MLB, and signed by the ABL. When that player becomes a free agent, he CAN leave that league, despite me not wanting that. It seems that once a player does leave a league (because he was released), then the "free agents may not leave this league" thing does not apply. Also, this does not apply to minor league free agents.
For Instance:
Grover Gilmore (who incidentally was a Federal Baseball league player, thus went directly into free agency) was signed by the ABL Columbus Cyclone in 1914. He played there for a year and a half, then was traded to the Honolulu Hawaiians. He became a free agent in 1919, and was signed by the New York Yankees of the MLB.
Roy Witherup, who started out with the Boston Braves, was released by the Chicago White Sox in 1915. He then signed a pretty nice contract with the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese League. He absolute tore it up, going 58-4 with a sub-1.00 ERA in 2 seasons. He then signed as a free agent with the Boise Gappers of the ABL.
It seems this is only happening with MLB players because those released players are good enough to go play in other leagues, while released players in the fictional leagues are just not good enough.
