1924 World Series

The Pirates roughed up Joe Bush, scoring 8 runs in 4 innings. CF Clyde Barnhart led off the 1st inning with a triple, and four batters later, Max Carey hit a 2-run triple en route to a 4-run inning. For the Pirates, Dazzy Vance allowed just 1 run and 6 hits in 9 innings.

Game 1: Philadelphia 1 - Pittsburgh 8

The A's managed 3 runs and 10 hits off Wilbur Cooper, but again their pitching failed them. Herb Pennock was lit up for 9 runs off 15 hits. Pirates 2B Jim Viox went 4-for-5.

Game 2: Philadelphia 3 - Pittsburgh 9

Returning home was sweet for the A's as they turned the tables on Pittsburgh. This time, Slim Harriss allowed just 4 hits and 1 run in a complete game win while the offense tagged Johnny Morrison for 8 runs and 17 hits. 37-year-old Eddie Collins and 35-year-old Joe Jackson combined to go 7-for-10.

Game 3: Pittsburgh 1 - Philadelphia 8

For the first time in the series, a game remained close after the early innings. The game was scoreless until Max Carey hit an RBI single with 2 outs in the 8th off Joe Bush. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, the A's faced going down 3 games to 1 when catcher Wally Schang hit a solo homerun off Dazzy Vance to tie the game. Then in the 10th, Frank Welch hit a pinch hit single, scoring pinch runner Charlie Grimm from 3rd to win the game for Philly.

The Pirates took a 2-0 lead on Herb Pennock and the A's, but Philly tied the game in the 6th when Joe Jackson and Frank Welch hit back-to-back RBI singles. 3B Sammy Hale gave the A's a 4-2 lead with a 2-run single in the 7th. Pirates 1B Jewel Ens drove in a run with 2 outs in the 8th and 3B Tony Boeckel tied the game with a RBI single in the 9th. But in the bottom of the 9th, Jimmy Dykes and Wally Schang led off with 2 singles. Stuffy McInnins bunted them over, and after a walk to Al Simmons, Sammy Hale singled home the winning run.

Game 5: Pittsburgh 4 - Philadelphia 5

Both teams scored early and often in this game. The A's took a quick 3-0 lead, but the Pirates tied it in the 2nd. The A's then went up 5-3 in the 3rd, but the Pirates scored 4 runs in the same inning. They added another run in the 4th and went on to win 8-6, tying the series at 3 games a piece.

The Pirates led 1-0 for 5 innings, but in the 6th, Philly took a 2-1 lead. The A's scored twice in the 8th and 9th innings to seal a 6-1 victory and claim their 8th World Championship.

Winner, 4-3: Philadelphia Athletics, 8th Championship, 13th Pennant
