You can trade after the trading deadline, it's just that the players involved have to clear waivers before the trade can actually be completed. This makes post-deadline trades difficult but not impossible.
Also, note that you need to set such rule options in the off-season or pre-season. If you turned on the trading deadline during the season, I don't think the rule will take effect until the next season.
