Yes, you can be fired! I went into commish mode and took over the Mets in 1962, then shut off commish mode and 50 games in with a record of 12 and 38, I was fired! lol Next time I did this, I took over the Houston Colt 45's, and stayed in commish mode as I didn't want to get fired. That would be my suggestion if you want to have any history as a manager.
