Champs Smith Snaps Lynx 9-game Win Streak
Craig Smith (2-0) of Arlon didn't let Rich Hart's third-inning 3-run homer get to him. After that he blanked first place La Claire over the next six innings for a 7-3 triumph and ended their nine-game winning skein. Smith gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in all, while hurling a complete game. He whiffed 6 and issued only one walk. Smith was backed by 4 home runs and 11 hits. CF Jerry Keller evened the score at 3-3 with a three-run shot in the fourth frame, LF Matt Merrill made it 5-3 with a 2-run salvo in the fifth, RF Steve Barnett increased it 6-3 in the eighth and SS Bama Hartley finished it off with a solo home run in the ninth.
Pat Daniels (1-1) started for La Claire and was credited with the defeat. He was hit hard and allowed 9 hits and 5 runs in 7 innings.
The Lynx (9-2) suffered only their second loss this year and still are in first place in the TBU West Division. Arlon's record is now 5-6. The Champs are tied for third with the Blue Lake Blue Sox (5-6).
Bucs Beat Frogs in 13th
Fairfax and Bay St. Clair battled long and hard for 13 innings, when catcher Jake Singleton finally decided it with a two-out double that scored Tony Mann from second base to win it 3-2. It came off losing pitcher Johnny Schuessler (0-2), who had just come on in relief at the start of the thirteenth. Norm Gross (1-2) got the victory with a scoreless inning.
The Buccaneers Gary Robinson was magnificent in the game, working 11 innings and holding the Frogs to 2 runs and only 5 hits with 7 Ks and no walks. Jimmy Dalton, the Fairfax starter, also hurled a strong game, stopping Bay St. Clair on one run and 5 hits through seven frames with 5 strikeouts and 3 bases on balls. Gerry Fisher stood out for the Frogs, too. He held the Buccaneers without a run from the ninth through the twelfth.
2B Tony Mann sparked BSC at bat, going 4-for-6 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Singleton was 3-7 with a pair of RBIs. RF Gregg Vincent was the only bright spot for the Frogs as he hit his IPA-leading 7th home run of the season.
Bay St. Clair (3-8) is still in last place in the TBU West, while the Fairfax Frogs (7-4) are in the number two slot, 2 games behind first place La Claire.
Blue Sox Sock It to Viks 7-2
Solid hitting and solid pitching is a hard combination to beat. Blue Lake banged out 10 hits in a 7-2 victory over Bayview at Harbor Stadium. The Blue Sox got a good outing from righthander Donnie Bullock, who restricted the Vikings to just 2 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings. He tired in the ninth and Russ Courtney got the final three outs. 1B Fred Taranto led Blue Lake with 3-4, including a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs. It was not a good day for Bayview starter Mike Jardoin (0-1). He left trailing in the fourth 5-0, after surrendering 5 hits and all the runs.
It was Blue Lake's (5-6) third consecutive win over the Buccaneers (4-7). The Blue Sox are tied for third with Arlon (5-6) in the TBU West.
