faces.dat contains the data required by facegen to create a face, but the images folder contains the generated images, and these images are the ones that are used until a face is regenerated.
There isn't anyway of regenerating the faces.dat data from the images so I'm not sure how you'll be able to keep faces on and not lose the faces you already have.
What size is the faces.dat file that you tried to copy in?
If it's from a previous version of the game the header will be different. I'll send you a PM and if you could send the faces.dat from your old game I'll check it out for you.
