Peterson's HR Beats Redhawks in 13th
Elnora right fielder Quincy Peterson (.291) smashed a walk-off homer in the 13th inning to take a 5-4 squeaker from first place Far Mountain. Wally Tidwell (3-4 3.51) claimed the victory with three sparkling innings of relief, stopping Far Mountain on no runs and one hit. The Redhawks outstanding closer Doc Rutledge (6-3 2.25) was almost as good, allowing only one run and three hits over the last five and two-thirds frames. Rutledge struck out six and walked two. In the early going it looked like the All-Stars were well on the way to winning as they ran up a 4-1 after seven innings behind Carl Costas (4-8 3.56). But he weakened in the eighth and was pounded for three runs to tie the score. Costas left the game with nine strikeouts. Topping Elnora's bats were right fielder Art Atkins (.317) with a two-run shot in the first and three RBIs in all and center fielder Rusty Gilbert (.278) with 3-for-7. Leading the Redhawks were left fielder Gerald Davis (.250) with three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored and catcher Dave Davis (.378) with three hits and an RBI.
The Elnora All-Stars (29-44) are last in the Ruthlandian Union North standings, but they have played the division's best club tough in this series. The All-Stars have taken the last two games. Far Mountain (43-30) took the opener and is 14 games ahead of Elnora.
Colfax Clobbers Glasco, Manning Wins 5th Straight
Southpaw Harry Manning is on a tear with his fifth win in a row. He humbled Glasco 11-2, giving up only two runs and five hits. Manning (10-4 3.23) walked two and fanned three in seven innings. Closer Walt Sellers (2-4 2.32) polished off the A's with a runless eighth and ninth. The Blasters also lived up to their name with 14 hits, spearheaded by left fielder Blinky Brandon (.297) with a three-run double, first baseman Dennis Cole (.310) with three hits, one of which was his 19th home run, good for a pair of runs, catcher Jeff Cook (.275) went 4-for-4 with two doubles, scored twice and drove in two and center fielder Tatsuya Sasaki (.286) was 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in two runs. The Glasco starter, Charles Darby (9-6 3.37), continued to struggle with his third loss in his last four games. He was shelled for seven runs in three innings.
Colfax (41-31) is in second place and clinging just 1.5 games behind the TU North Division leader, Far Mountain (43-30). The Glasco Athletics (33-37) trail by 8.5 games.
Vipers End 9-Game Skid, Whip V's 8-4
Two of Valmara's mainstays combined to break their atrocious 9-game losing streak. Zarek Zalewski (9-4 2.07) went the first seven innings and departed with a 7-3 lead. He gave up ten hits, but only three runs, with six Ks and a walk for the victory. Danny Blauser (5-3 2.57) surrendered a run in the eighth, but sat the Vigilantes down in order in the ninth. The Vipers had won their last five games. Volusia piled up a dozen hits, but couldn't deliver in the clutch. The Vipers only got 8 hits, but were productive. They scored three in the first and four in the seventh, led by third baseman Rickey O'Reilly (.270) with 2-5 and a grand slam. Right fielder Jet Kazmarek (.299) and second baseman Scott Kaminski (.333) both drove in runs for Valmara. The V's did a lot of hitting, but not much scoring. Shortstop Scooter Perez (.380) scored twice and had two hits, center fielder Alex Luna (.262) had two hits and an RBI, first baseman Alejandro Salazar (.305) scored two runs and was 3-4 and catcher Jojo Nunez (.307) had two hits and batted in a run. Lefty Lenny Collins (5-5 2.92) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs in eight innings.
Valmara now shares the IPA record for the most consecutive losses with Sugar Valley. The Rattlers set the record on June 4 in the 6-5 loss to Marston.
The Vigilantes (36-36) are third in the standings, 6.5 games off the pace, while Valmara (34-38) slid ahead of Glasco (33-37) by a percentage point to move into fourth, 8.5 games out.
