My eyes glaze over if I get past like 1000 or 1200 AD without a break. But I agree, it easy to talk yourself into 'just one more turn' for about 100 years.
Back to topic, I like having players go to original teams, though I generally like to keep some ties to actual history. If I want fictional history, I'll just play a fictional league. I'm not really sure which is 'harder'.
