Tycobbian Union - West Division
BL Bops Frogs 4-3 for 4th In a Row
Blue Lake is playing great baseball and having lots of fun at the Frog Pond in Fairfax. In the first game of the twinbill, the Blue Sox bopped the Frogs 4-3 for win number four in a row and gave the TU West Division leader its fifth consecutive defeat. Clint McPherson (3-4 4.04) tossed a solid game, stopping Fairfax on six hits and three runs in going the distance. He beat Kaz Hayagawa (8-10 3.92), who pitched a decent game, while working eight innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. Center fielder Donnie Frazier (.297) tripled in the eighth and scored the winning run on first baseman Fred Taranto's (.318) sacrifice fly. Frazier had homered earlier in the game, had two hits, scored twice and drove in one. Shortstop Dandy Wilson (.250) also had two hits and scored twice. Frogs left fielder Gator Davis (.279) went 2-4 and had two RBIs to pace his club. First baseman Ernie Hutchinson (.266) scored two runs for Fairfax.
5 Straight for Blue Sox, Sweep Frogs
Skipper Cobb Tyson's Blue Lake Blue Sox had done the unbelievable. They have come into the Frog Pond and sweep not just a doubleheader, but all five games of the series with Fairfax. The Blue Sox took both ends of the doubleheader and have now won their last five games. They captured the nightcap 7-2 with Derek Manetti (5-5 3.81) on the mound. He scattered eight hits, held the Frogs to just two runs and pitched a complete game. Center fielder Donnie Frazier (.304) was the batting hero again with a perfect 3-for-3 day and driving in three runs for the Sox. They totaled 12 hits in all. Blue Lake chased Jackie Leslie (11-6 3.60) after three innings and sent him to his fourth loss in the last five decisions. Leslie was belted for four runs and seven hits before he called it a day.
Fairfax (51-31) is still way ahead in the Tycobbian Union West standings in spite of dropping its last six games. Blue Lake (40-41) is third and trails the Frogs by 10.5 games.
Bucs Win Again Over Viks, 6th Straight
In the opening game of a twinbill, Bay St. Clair won its sixth successive game by coming back to beat Bayview 9-8. The Buccaneers had a 7-4 lead after four innings, lost it by the seventh and trailed 8-7, then won 9-8 with single runs in the last two at-bats. Second baseman Tony Mann doubled in the right fielder Jose Valenzuela (.299) with the game-breaker in the last of the eighth frame. Taking the loss was Ken Fairchild (0-1 1.80) and recording the win in relief was closer Chris Van Arden (3-0 0.84). He gave up no runs in the last two frames. The Bucs were outhit 14 to 12 by Bayview. Mann (.332) drove in four runs with four hits and center fielder Wayne Latham (.429) batted in two with two hits to pace the winners. It was Mann's 6th roundtripper so far. First baseman Dwayne Coleman (.311) led the Vikings with 4-for-4, four RBIs and two runs scored. He had two doubles and his 27th homer, tops in the Tycobbian Union. Bayview has dropped five consecutive games now.
Bucs, Viks Split Twinbill, Streaks End
It was good while it lasted, but it's over now. Bay St. Clair's win string came to an end at six in the nightcap. Bayview's Jerry Harrison (10-5 3.15) cooled them off 6-1 at Shoreline Park and also stopped the Vikings losing skid at five games. Harrison struck out five, walked only one and allowed only one run and eight hits in a complete-game outing, his 7th this season. Catcher Tommy Harrell (.260) led the team with two runs batted in and 2 hits, including his 4th homer this year. First baseman George Lyons (.242) collected his 16th roundtripper for the Buccaneers. Don Yaden (2-1 3.60) was the losing pitcher as he was nicked for four runs in five innings.
Second place Bayview (44-40) cut into first place Fairfax's (51-31) huge lead in the TU West and now trails by 8 games. Bay St. Clair (33-5) is last and is 18.5 games back.
Lynx Slide by Champs 2-1 in Opener
In the opening game of a doubleheader, La Claire slipped past Arlon at Derby Downs 2-1 in an error-filled game. No runs were earned, all were a gift of the four errors in the game. Pat Daniels and Nickie Baumgartner combined to handle the Champions. Daniels (8-3 3.91) got credit for the victory. He surrendered nine hits, fanned two and walked one in six-plus innings. Baumgartner (3-6 3.86) came on in the seventh with the tying score on second and got the last out of the inning, then blanked them in the eighth and ninth innings for his 3rd save. Baumgartner allowed one hit and fanned three. Arlon had the advantage in hits 10-6 over the Lynx. 19-year-old Connie Govagan (0-1 0.00) did a fine job in his first start for the Champions. He went the distance, struck out six, walked one and gave up no earned runs and six hits.
Champs, Lynx Divide Doubleheader
The team that gets the most hits doesn't always win the game. In the nightcap Arlon was outhit 11 to 7, yet beat La Claire 4-2 to divide the doubleheader. The Lynx took the lead 2-0 in the second on Artie Scott's (.211) homer, but the Champions quickly rallied to tie it at 2-2 in the third frame on Matt Merrill's (.315) two-run single. Arlon went ahead to stay on right fielder Andy Pettorini's (.326) single in the fifth and finished the scoring in the seventh with second baseman Karl Detwiler's (.307) RBI single. Southpaw Woody Fitzgerald (5-4 3.59) worked eight good innings, gave up 11 hits, but only two runs. Fitzgerald walked three and fanned seven. Rock steady closer Jeff Nieman (6-5 1.43) pitched a perfect 1-2-3 ninth for his 6th save. La Claire starter Kimo Orlando (3-2 2.27) suffered the defeat, allowing only one earned run in seven innings with eight Ks. He was victimized by faulty defense and three unearned runs.
Arlon (40-42) is fourth in the TU West race, 11 games behind Fairfax (51-31), while La Claire (39-43) is 12 games back in fifth place.
