Are most of the image files player pictures? Were you using any facegen-related mods, like the facial hair one, before conversion?
What happens if, in a copy of the league, you try to regenerate player images for everyone rather than copy the old files over? Unless your face.dat file was damaged, similar faces ought to be generated.
