Volusia Trades 4 to Hartsdale For 2B Abreu
With the trading deadline just two days away, GM Juan-Carlos De la Hoya of Volusia needed some punch in his lineup for the RU North stretch run, so he traded four players to Hartsdale for Francisco Abreu, a power-hitting second baseman. Most of the V's players are backups, only one of them was a starter.
The Vigilantes have finalized a deal with the Hellcats for the services of the 26-year-old Abreu. In exchange, they will receive 28-year-old right fielder Dan Rogers, 24-year-old second baseman Hoppy Hill, 28-year-old catcher Jorge Rosado and 24-year-old reliever Ike Moore.
Volusia is tied for third in the RU North Division and are only 2.5 games out of first place. Hartsdale is languishing in last place in the TU East and is 14.5 games off the pace and headed nowhere.
De la Hoya told BNN, "We got a premier player in the trade in Abreu and did not sacrifice any regulars or starting pitchers. I am overjoyed to get a player like Abreu."
This season Abreu has hit at a .279 clip and produced 64 RBIs, 20 home runs and 57 runs scored. In limited action, Rogers is batting .288 with 2 homers and 19 RBIs, while Rosado is hitting .253 with one homer and 17 RBIs. Hill is better known for his glove than hitting. He has a .231 batting average in 24 starts this season. This year Moore has made 3 starts and 16 relief appearances with no saves. His won-lost record is 3-2 with a 4.34 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 45 innings.
GM/Manager Zim Donner said he hated to part with his best player Abreu, but he got four players that will improve his ballclub immediately. Donner said, "We are going nowhere this season. This was chance to build for next year and the future. All of the players are young and have not reached their potential. Rogers and Rosado should replace the offense we're losing with Abreu's departure."
He also told reporters that Hill is a good, young second baseman and Moore is a solid, veteran pitcher.
