Tybobbian Union - West Division
Champions Clip Frogs 4-3 on Ray's 2-Run HR
For the fourth game in a row it was a one-run thriller and this may have been the best. Arlon was trailing 3-2 and down to its last out, when Brad Ray stepped to the plate with a runner on first. Ray came through with a two-run homer and the Champions rallied past first place Fairfax 4-3. Jeff Nieman (9-7 1.59) garnered the win with a scoreless ninth in relief of starter Ace Howe. The Frogs Bobby Ray Trent (3-4 2.98) suffered a heartbreaking defeat. He allowed four runs on eight hits, fanned six and issued no walks. Howe hurled eight innings and gave up three runs and eight hits. First baseman Ray led Arlon with two RBIs. Pinchhitter Kenny Michaud (.344) also homered for the Champs. Fairfax was paced by catcher Marv McCoy (.283) with 2-3 and two runs scored and left fielder Gator Davis, who drilled his 21st homer of the year. The Frogs had 9 hits, the Champs 8.
This was Arlon's (54-53) third win in a row over Fairfax (59-47), who no longer seems to be invincible. The Frogs still have a 5.5 games lead over the third place Champions.
Sox Orgeron Slams 3-Run Shot, Beats Viks 7-5
Game-winning homers have come in bunches lately in the IPA. The latest was a pinchhit 3-run roundtripper in the top of the ninth by Cy Orgeron of the Blue Lake Blue Sox to stun Bayview 7-5 at Downtown Plaza Stadium. That enabled Blue Lake to rally from a 5-2 deficit and break its four-game losing skid. It also put an end to the Vikings three-game winning streak. Up until the ninth Paul Hood has rung up 13 strikeouts, but then the walls came tumbling down. After a double and a single made it 5-3, skipper Walter Johanssen called on Buzzy Lewis from the bullpen. Lewis (5-7 3.53) got the first man out, but none of the next three. He took the loss. Reliever Happy McManus (2-1 2.84) got the win with a scoreless eighth. Closer Russ Courtney (5-3 2.17) notched his 13th save by getting the Vikings in order in the ninth. The Blue Sox also got a homer from right fielder Doyle Osborne (.326). Bayview best hitter was first baseman Dwayne Coleman (.294), who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including his 32th home run. Coleman has driven in 96 runs and leads the Tycobbian Union in homers and RBIs.
Bayview (57-52) is in second place in the Tycobbian Union West race, just 3.5 games off the pace. Blue Lake (52-55) is fourth and 7.5 games back.
La Claire Lashes Buccaneers 6-2
The La Claire Lynx lashed Bay St. Clair 6-2 behind the strong pitching of George Gentry, a stock righthander. Gentry (4-2 2.31) lasted into the ninth, gave up only two runs and nine hits with four walks and 7 Ks. Monoto Kishata (5-9 3.65) got the last out of the game and his 11th save. La Claire collected 11 hits and was led by right fielder Antonio Guerrero (.316) with three hits, two runs and an RBI, including his 2nd home run. Catcher Ronald Lynn (.288) also went 3-for-4 and batted in two runs for the Lynx. Starter Jeremiah McDonald (1-4 2.84) logged the loss, yielding three runs, two earned, and eight hits in his six innings. He exited trailing 3-2.
La Claire (51-57) is next-to-last in the TU West standings and is 9 games behind. The Buccaneers (49-58) are in the cellar and 10.5 games out.
