RU, TU Announce Monthly Award Winners

Chuck Hill, Forest City's left fielder, won the Ruthlandian Union Batter of the Month Award for August! To take the honor he put up some good numbers including a .357 average, 9 home runs and 28 RBIs. The SION Baseball Writers Association will present his trophy at the next home game for the Lumberjacks. Hill is presently hitting at a .328 pace with 33 home runs and 110 RBIs. He has played in 128 games and scored 99 times.

Antonio Guerrero of the La Claire Lynx recorded a .358 batting average in August. His hitting spree racked up the Tycobbian Union Batter of the Month award for his trophy case. The La Claire right fielder battered opposing pitchers all month, accumulating 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and scoring 25 runs. Guerrero is batting .335 in 2001 with 11 home runs, 39 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He has 71 hits in 212 at-bats.

Bud Ford hated to see August turn to September. And who could blame him? The 29-year-old hurler piled up 6 wins and no losses for the Redhawks last month and won the Ruthlandian Union Pitcher of the Month award for his efforts. Ford stymied opposing batters on 50 base hits and a .214 batting average. He rang up 40 strikeouts in 63.2 innings of work, surrendered 10 walks and fashioned a sparkling 2.40 ERA. To date Ford is 6-1 in 10 starts with a 2.84 ERA and has 57 strikeouts in 79.1 innings.

Sid Hyder of Ozarka had an excellent August with a 6-0 record and was selected the Pitcher of the Month in the Tycobbian Union. He finished the month with a 1.56 ERA, while piling up 60 strikeouts in 69.1 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .210 batting average. This season Hyder has worked 123.1 innings with 108 strikeouts en route to a 10-3 record and a 2.55 ERA.

Flipper Bird's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Sugar Valley shortstop has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In August he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .324 with 8 doubles, 3 triples and 8 home runs. Bird also scored 31 times and drove in 15 runs. During the 2001 season Bird has hit .299 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs. He has played in 131 games and scored 98 times.

18-year-old Sid Hyder is deceptively poised for such a young man. In 9 starts he bagged 6 wins in August and took home the Tycobbian Union Rookie of the Month Award. The Ozarka hurler logged a 6-0 record, 60 strikeouts in 69.1 innings, held opponents to a .210 average and compiled an ERA of 1.56. In 16 starts this season Hyder has recorded a 10-3 record and a 2.55 ERA.
