Ruthlandian Union Elite 8 Playoffs

Volusia Advances, Whips Marston 4 Games to 2
The Volusia Vigilantes defeated the Marston Nine 5-2 in game six of the Elite Series and will advance to the Final 4 against the Far Mountain Redhawks. The V's won the series four games to two. Tommy Betanzos (1-1 2.40) copped the deciding game with a fine performance. He stopped Marston on five hits and went the route, striking out five and issuing two walks. Only one of the runs was earned. The Vigilantes pelted losing pitcher Casey Ledbetter (1-1 3.29) for nine hits and five runs in five innings and were sparked by left fielder Winky Rush (.478) with three hits, three runs scored and one RBI. Volusia tallied single runs in the first two frames to go up 2-0. Marston cut it to 2-1 in the fourth, only to have the V's pull away with one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to make it 5-1. Shortstop Scooter Perez (.217), first baseman Alejandro Salazar (.231), right fielder Jesus Arroyo (.292) and center fielder Alex Luna (.174) chipped in one RBI apiece for the winners. First baseman Chuck Barrett (.316) homered in defeat.

The Vigilantes will move to the next round and play an old division foe, the Far Mountain Redhawks, who swept Forest City in four games. The RU North Division winner finished the regular season 16-14 against Volusia.

Stallions Clip Blue Lake 5-4, Head to Final 4
South Fork is headed for the Final 4 after disposing of the Blue Lake Blue Sox 5-4 in game six of the Elite 8 Series. The Stallions smashed 15 hits to take the series four games to two at Jock Ewing Stadium. After Blue Sox center fielder Donnie Frazier (.250) belted a two-run homer to tie it up 4-4 in the top of the ninth, South Fork rebounded and wrapped up the series on third baseman Glenn Holliday's bases-loaded single. Ken Conner (2-0 3.38) toughed it out and went the distance, yielding four runs on eight hits and striking out 8 batters. It was his second win in the playoffs. Russ Courtney (0-2 13.50) gave up the game-winning run for the loss. Center fielder Ronnie Lee (.333) and Holliday (.286) both had three base hits to pace the Stallions. Shortstop Bobby Riley (.400) smacked two hits and drove in two runs. Riley hit a two-run roundtripper in the sixth to put South Fork ahead 3-2. First baseman Fred Taranto (.280) also walloped a two-run homer for the Blue Sox.

The Stallions now await a Final 4 showdown with the winner of the Ginza-Fairfax series.

Ginza Even Series 3-3, Buries Frogs 11-0
The Ginza Ninjas buried Fairfax at the Frog Pond 11-0 to even up their Elite 8 playoff series at three games each. It was the Ninjas third triumph in a row. The Ninjas socked 15 hits in the rout with first baseman Kenshin Yamamoto (.250) batting in three runs, right fielder Takashi Fujimoto (.292) knocking in a pair and catcher Howie Mitchell (.269) driving in two runs. Third baseman Kaz Ojima (.385) and left fielder Charlie Campbell (.269) each contributed three hits and scored twice in the decisive victory. Not only did they hit, but they got an outstanding mound job from Kazuhiro Nakayama (1-0 1.02), who whitewashed the Frogs on nine hits, stranding ten runners on base. Kaz Hayagawa (0-1 6.55) was bombarded for six runs in just two innings of work for the loss.

The series finale will be tomorrow in Fairfax with Kojiro Matsumoto on the hill for Ginza and Robbie Meredith starting for the Frogs. Matsumoto is 1-1 in the postseason with a 3.94 ERA, while Meredith has struggled with an 0-1 mark and a lofty 6.35 ERA.
