Ruthlandian Union Final 4 Playoffs
V's Victorious, Islandian Pro Cup Bound
The Far Mountain Redhawks ran into a hornet's nest at the Jailhouse in Volusia. The Vigilantes won the Final 4 Series four games to one, eliminating Far Mountain in game five 5-3 behind some good pitching by Tommy Betanzos (3-1 2.20), the big 6'6" righthander. Betanzos allowed three runs on six hits in eight and two-thirds innings. He fanned seven and walked two, before giving way to closer Ricky Moreno (1-0 0.00), who got the final out with a runner on second base and the tying run at home plate. It was Moreno's third save in the playoffs. He has yet to give up a run in 4 appearances and 7 innings. Moreno has fanned 12. Right fielder Jesus Arroyo (.317) put the V's in front in the opening inning with a two-run double. Third baseman Bennie Anderson (.286) singled with one away in the second inning, advanced to second on a bunt and scored on a single by shortstop Scooter Perez (.364) to make it 3-0 in favor of Volusia. In the fourth Far Mountain retaliated with a pair of runs. First baseman Royce Benson (.351) had an RBI double, stole third and came home on a ground out by right fielder Sid Cameron (.128). That narrowed the score to 3-2. Catcher Jojo Nunez's (.211) roundtripper made it 4-2 Volusia in the last of the fourth. The Redhawks came back again with a run in the top of the fifth when shortstop Joey Cannizzaro (.333) doubled, stole third and rode in on second baseman Steve Kaminski's (.286) sacrifice fly. The Vigilantes added the final run in the seventh on Perez's lead-off double and left fielder Winky Rush's (.310) RBI single. Perez had three hits to lead V's, while Cannizzaro's two hits topped the Redhawks. Sonny Elliott (2-2 3.60) took the loss as he was tagged hard for nine hits and five runs in seven innings.
The surprising seventh-seeded Vigilantes will now move into the IPA championshio finals. They will play the winner of Ginza and South Fork for the Islandian Pro Cup.
