Islandian Pro Cup Series - Game One
V's Win 3-2 Over Ninjas in Pro Cup Opener
In the Islandian Pro Cup opener the pitching was great, the defense was great and Volusia triumphed 3-2 in 10 innings over the hometown Ginza Ninjas. Pitcher Ricky Moreno (.500) was outstanding on the mound and with the bat, too. He led off the 10th with a double and scored the winning run on a single by left fielder Winky Rush (.319). Moreno (2-0 0.00) got it done on the hill as well with four scoreless innings, extending his scoreless innings in the playoffs to 11. He only gave up one hit and got the win. Toshiharu Ito (1-2 0.99) was masterful in defeat, hurling all ten innings. Ito was tagged for 10 hits, but only surrendered two earned runs. He struck out five and walked only one. Both clubs played fine defense and turned three double plays apiece. Raul Sandoval (3-1 1.58) started the game for the V's and worked six innings, yielding two runs on seven hits. The Vigilantes had the advantage in hits 10 to 9 with first baseman Alejandro Salazar (.269) getting three of them and Winky Rush two of them. Rush led with two RBIs.
Ginza took the early lead 1-0 in the third inning. Center fielder Nick Winters (.286) singled, advanced to second on a ground out, then scored on shortstop Shinjiro Aoki's (.161) single. Volusia knotted it up 1-1 in the fourth on right fielder Jesus Arroyo's (.311) RBI ground out. In the sixth frame the Ninjas jumped ahead again 2-1 on two walks and two singles with catcher Howie Mitchell (.293) getting an RBI single. The V's made it 2-2 in the eighth on shortstop Scooter Perez's (.347) lead-off triple and Winky Rush's (.319) ground out to short.
Game two will be tomorrow at Ninja Stadium with Tommy Betanzos (3-1 2.20) on the hill for Volusia and Kaz Matsumoto (3-1 2.20) doing the chores for the Ninjas.
