Islandian Pro Cup Series - Game Two
V's Betanzos Stops Ginza 4-2 in Game 2
Volusia won its second straight on the road - again it was with dominant pitching. The Vigilantes trimmed Ginza 4-2 at Ninja Stadium to take a 2-0 lead in the Islandian Pro Cup Series. This time it was Tommy Betanzos (4-1 2.21) spinning the win. He went eight innings, allowed two runs and seven hits before being relieved by closer Ricky Moreno (2-0 0.00), who came in with a runner on first in the ninth with no outs and proceeded to make quick work of Ginza and get his fourth save in this year's playoffs. Moreno faced two batters and got the last three outs, the last two on a double play. Pacing Volusia at bat were second baseman Francisco Abreu (.388) with two RBIs and catcher Jojo Nunez (.244) with three hits. The defeat went to Kojiro Matsumoto (3-2 2.68), who was rapped for 11 hits and four runs in six innings.
The V's scored first in the opening inning on Abreu's single, only to be tied up in the bottom of the inning when shortstop Shinjiro Aoki (.167) singled, went to second on a faulty pickoff throw, stole third and scored on a sac fly by right fielder Takashi Fujimoto (.276). Volusia jumped ahead to stay with two runs in the fourth. Left fielder Winky Rush (.314) singled, advanced to third on first baseman Alejandro Salazar's (.286) double. Rush scored on Abreu's ground out and Salazar came in on right fielder Jesus Arroyo's (.306) base hit. They added another run to make it 4-1 in the fourth. Catcher Jojo Nunez doubled, went to third on a fly ball, then scored on a wild pitch. The Ninjas got their last run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by catcher Howie Mitchell (.279).
The teams will take a day off for travel and then continue the series on Monday in Volusia at the Jailhouse. Lenny Collins (1-1 3.86) will start for the Vigilantes, while it will be Kazuhiro Nakayama (1-1 3.96) on the mound for Ginza.
