Blue Jays Scouting Paying Dividends & Claim SP From Baltimore
The Jays announced today that they have signed 18 yearold Puerto Rican catcher
C Pepe Chavez to a minor league contract. The youngster was discovered on a recent scouting excersion to Puerto Rico and the Jays signed him to a minor league contract. He has the potential to be a very good catcher in the majors with an above average bat and great arm. He is very young and very raw at the moment and was assigned to the Jays Rookie League Team the Gulf Coast Blue Jays in the Gulf Coast league to await the start of the Rookie League season in June.
The Jays also announced that the have claimed 26 yearold
SP Daniel Cabrera off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. Cabrera was 9-18 with a 5.55 ERA 108 BB and 1066 K's for the Orioles last season. He was made expendable by the addition of
SP Roger Clemons in the offseason. GM Ryan Stewart "We really like Cabrera's stuff and think he could be a good middle of the rotation starter for us. He needs to cut down on his walks and work on his control but he could be a very good low risk/high reward for us"
