2003 IPA Pro Cup Series
Ruthlandian Union North Division - First Round Series - Second Game
Valmara Edges Glasco 6-5, Series Tied
In a tense thriller at War Memorial Stadium the top-seed Valmara Vipers fought off elimination from the RU North first round playoffs. C Yoshi Motsuzuki's two-run eighth-inning homer put the Vipers in front to stay and gave them new life with a 6-5 victory over the fourth-seeded Glasco Athletics in the best-of-three series. Danny Blauser struggled, but got the win as he went eight innings and permitted five runs. In the ninth closer Yanni Wlodarczyk relieved him with the score 6-4 and and a runner on third with one away. Wlodarczyk staggered through the inning, giving up a run on a ground-ball out, followed by two singles, placing runners on first and second, but finally got the dangerous Ox Beauvais for the final out of the game and the save. Valmara ran up a 4-2 lead after seven innings, when the A's charged back and almost caught them. Charles Darby was the loser as he worked into the seventh, allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and five Ks. Both clubs garnered 10 hits in the game. Viper 1B Masaichi Okawa and C Motsuzuki sparked the winners with two RBIs each, while 3B Lloyd Windham and CF Bucky Bucholtz delivered three hits apiece for Glasco.
The series will be decided tomorrow afternoon in Valmara.
Benson's HR Powers FM Over Ranford into Sweet 16
First baseman Royce Benson's two-run homer in the eighth inning powered the number-three seed Far Mountain Redhawks to a sweep of the second-seeded Ranford Bulls and into the Sweet 16 round. Benson led the Redhawks to a 4-2 triumph with three RBIs, while the 31-year-old righthander Sonny Elliott weathered 12 hits by the Bulls in a complete-game performance. Elliott fanned seven and issued three walks and stranded 12 baserunners. Ranford starter Bud Enright pitched well, but was tagged with the loss. He gave up two runs - one earned - in six innings and left trailing 2-1. Enright racked up eight strikeouts and walked three, while allowing eight hits. 2B Johnny Fenroy and SS Rick Fargnoli led the Bull batters with three hits each.
Third-seeded Far Mountain will now advance to the Sweet 16 and play the winner of Glasco and Valmara.
