2003 IPA Pro Cup Series

Tycobbian Union West Division - First Round Series - Second Game

Bucs Bump Off Bayview 8-2, Tie Up Series
The Bay St. Clair Buccaneers bounced back into the playoff picture with an 8-2 decision over the top-seeded Bayview Vikings to tie up the TU West series at one game apiece. They broke up a close game with three runs in the seventh and four more in the ninth to win going away. Skipper Guy Rondre got a good effort from Duke DeVree, who stymied the Vikings on two runs in seven and one-third innings. DeVree fanned five and walked one before yielding the mound to Norm Gross. The Buc closer got the last five outs for the save. RF Todd Bryant sparked the Buccaneers at bat with three for five, scoring twice and batting in three runs on a ninth-inning homer. 1B George Lyons also had a solo blast and scored twice with two hits. C Jake Singleton was 2-for-3, scored twice and batted in a pair of runs. RF Ed O'Neal had a perfect day for Bayview with four hits including a triple. Frank Wells suffered the loss as Bay St. Claire banged him around for four runs and eight hits in six-plus innings. The Bucs also got the best of Bayview with 12 hits to their 11.

The third and deciding game in the series is also slated to be played on the Vikings home field, Downtown Plaza Stadium. The finale will be played tomorrow afternoon.

9th-Inning Rally Saves Reds, Nip Redbirds 5-4
It took a remarkable three-run rally in the last of the ninth to keep the favored Rolling Hills Reds in the TU West playoff hunt. The Reds roared back from a 4-2 deficit to nip the Denton City Redbirds 5-4. A victory by the Redbirds would have eliminated Rolling Hills. Now the best-of-three series is knotted up at a game each with game three tomorrow afternoon at the Midtown Ball Grounds in Rolling Hills. A two-out triple by SS Jamie Meade off reliever Bubba Lear tied the score at 4-4. Then Big Boy Charisa hit a ground ball single past third to win the game. Lear was the loser and gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning on three hits and two walks in a dismal performance. Rolling Hills closer Stephen Fassaro fared better and got credit for the victory. He relieved starter Roger Davidson in the top of the ninth with the score 4-2 and runners on first and second with two outs. Fassaro got the last out on a ground ball to put a stop to the uprising. Meade paced the Reds with 3-5, two RBIs and scored twice. LF Charisa also chipped in two RBIs and CF Willie Mays Nixon batted in a run. Denton City was led by CF Pat Coniglio with three hits. SS Trevor Tomlinson and 1B Rod MacCormack added two hits apiece in defeat.
