2003 IPA Pro Cup Series

Tycobbian Union North Division - First Round Series - Third Game

Z's Edge Favored Hellcats 4-3, Head to Sweet 16
The fourth place Luxora Zorros have knocked off the top team in the TU North and are now headed for the Sweet 16. The Z's edged the Hartsdale Hellcats at Pioneer Park 4-3 in twelve innings. Skipper Alejandro Rodrigo got superb pitching from starter Eddie Hoffman and reliever Gustavo Escalora. Hoffman tossed six innings and allowed two runs on six hits and fanned five, while Escalora was brilliant, working six innings and giving up only one unearned run and two hits. Escalora gave up three walks and fanned six batters for the win. Escalora even had a hand in the winning run. He singled off losing pitcher Gene Young with one out in the twelfth, moved up to second on a sac bunt, then scored on RF Cristo Viamonte's two-out base hit. The Zorros collected 12 hits with Viamonte going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Luxora took the lead 1-0 in the first frame on Lacy Tompkins' sacrifice fly. Hartsdale came back with two in the third on RBI singles by SS Jud Turchin and 2B Hoppy Hill. The Z's knotted it up 2-2 on an RBI ground out by RF Joel Reed in the fourth. It stayed that way until the top of the tenth when Luxora SS Rafael Lemos reached base on an error by Hellcat third baseman Whiz Weaver and scored on Viamonte's double. In the bottom half of the inning Hartsdale rallied and tied it at 3-3 when Turchin singled, stole second and went to third on a wild throw by C Otto Kronvath, then came home on 1B Mac Faulkner's fly ball. Turchin and CF Mel Poe led the Hellcats with two hits each. Hartsdale had eight hits in all. Young got the loss as he permitted two runs in his three innings, but only one of them was earned.

In the next round Luxora will go up against the Oxford Red Caps, who finished in second place in the regular season standings, but only one game out of first place, tied with the Fairfax Frogs. Game one of the best-of-three series will be in Luxora at De la Vega Stadium. The other two games, if needed, will be played at Winchester Park in Oxford.
